Discussion 26 - 3/23/09

Hola Internets! Thanks for logging in!

So Toyota has developed this personal concept vehicle. I first saw it on Top Gear on BBC America (those of you in my first period know how I love this show). Toyota's idea is that we will all be driving something like this in the very near future. In fact, this concept is very near production to use in Japan. Check out these sites:

I hope to have some video to show from Top Gear so you can see this thing in action.

Let me know what you think about the concept of personal mobility.

Talk to me . . .

I have legs, and if I decide those are not good enough, I have a bike. I looked at that and Thought "that's kind of ugly". It reminds me of what a modern wheel chair would look like if they got an upgrade. I say work on the concept, but I don't like its current state

Cute... (but just cute)..Vehicle or "really cool tricycle thingy"...
I’m really can not get into it. I can’t even think of anything to say about it & it’s a known fact that I talk [too] much. Good Day. (L where's the video maybe it will change my mind)

mcgown,a-1 said...

VIDEO(thank L): The i-Real went from cute to cool but not "usable".(at least not for me). I agree with the guy on Top Gear : "futuristic wheel chair" much.

Calderon,A-1 said...

that is a great idea to have (if you need a wheelchair or you are just too lazy to get up and walk) but it has cool stuff but i have a question. IN WHAT COLORS DOES IT COME? because if i get one (i hope not) i want a red or a silver one. but if i need to get one for the mummy of my grandma' i might get a black one. (i know she hates me but i want to see her face when she rides it).

Thompson,O-1 said...

If that ever comes to america 1. they would have to make bigger ones, and 2. all people would do insted of walking would ride in that thing, and get fat and out of shape. Insted of makeing walking easyer, maby they should make it harder.

rodriguez,stephen-1 said...

It looks like a super powered wheel chair. i don't like the fact that old pple and young lazy pple can just drive passed me when i run and not be doing anything but sitting!!! i used to be so slow wheelchairs could beat me running and now the past has come to haunt me so thank you toyota, you've just destroyed my pride with your fast powered wheel chairs!!!!!

I remember when we watched the video during our period on this concept thing. I find it very interesting. The light-up back is neat and it'll be interesting to see if they do use it for turn signals and such. I think I like cars better, though. It seems like it would be very dangerous and if stupid people buy them, that could be a problem. I guess we will just have to see how everything goes.

Auxier, Emily - 4 said...

Honestly? In my opinion this shows how lazy people really are. People barely get the workouts that they need, and giving them a really fast wheel chair is going to make them gain an enormous amount of weight. I feel its a horrible idea. Gag.

GARRETT,K-4 said...

okay...this thing is an idea(not the best one) but an idea at the most. i wouldnt ride on a highway in it...i just wouldnt feel safe...AT ALL!

jarvis'j-7 said...

ok well i see the consep of it but to call it a car i wold not take it that far i wold call it a type of bike befor i ever called it a car

Trikosko, M-1 said...

Oh god it looks like a wheelchair and a segway had a baby. Why don't you just walk? And if you can't walk then use something more practical... like a wheelchair.

murillo, j - 1 said...

The i-real is a personal mobility vehicle made closely in human scale as a step toward commercialization in the near future. Represents the next stage of Toyota's personal mobility vehicle development following the pm, i-unit and i-swing.

Gilbreath,J-1 said...

So, the guys at Toyota are going into a new business....Wheelchairs. Why not rocket wheelchairs? Ya know, the kind we can strap Steven into and watch him go 500 mph, burning asfalt and tearing through random Corvettes, before finally crashing through a tree, all on video camera!

Nah, that probably wouldn't be very healthy, would it?

The i-Real looks kind of ok, but I still say some forms look like you might fall out with the slightest jerk or jiggle from speed bumps or loose rocks.

Broadway,M-1 said...

I think it cool with the images on the back. the device to talk to other people with the i-real. but the down side it is made for place like China and Japan. Where they can't realy use cars. but overall it a cool idea.

Ashley Manis said...

I really can't see myself cruising around in one of those, i-Reals.
I would rather have a 1990 something Toyota car instead. Those are pretty good.

Plus, look at how ugly it is:
http://www.gizmag.com/go/8157/picture/38780/
It look like a mobile toilet.

Tri-Edge said...

I really like the wheel chair idea but here is my problem with it. When does it come to America? This would be a great way to get around town if there is a traffic jam or something.

lathan,l-1 said...

I think its cool what they came up with but...., if you think about the things that you could better out it. But I dont think I would use one of those becace they could break down anywere. But on the bright side I think it's cool that you could ride in something that you could relax in. How they had it to leen i tback that was very cool in a sort of a cool thing today. But I would ride it and then again I probaly wouldnt.

McCorvey,T-1 said...

I think the I-real is a real cool intresting thing to explore. But i really think, it should be used for the handicapped, because they can communicate, and get around better even faster. But i'm not planning on retiring my legs, anytime soon.

Liles, T-1 said...

I WANT ONE! Although its not fast enough to drive on the street, and im sure if it was, then it doesn't meet any vehicle safety standards, it looks convienient, and most of all FUN! I cant tell you how often i have to walk to the gas station or to Brookshires in order to pick up something trivial yet important, like Dr. Peppers, something that everyone in my house is addicted to. Its just one step closer to the epitome of lazyness...

martines,j-1 said...

the i-real is better in small places like japan not in places that you have to drive at 50mph to get somewere quick and the i-real only goes about 20mph so youll have to lave couple of hours early to get there on time

Baker,M-1 said...

Okay, it looks a bit lik a messed up trike, but I love it. I would probably but it if it wasn't over the top expensive, but I plan to have a motorcycle. But it is so cute and stylish I might get it on an impulse buy, (which I am very known for XP)

Okay aftere wathing the little mobie you showed in class I really truly think I will buy oine of those, I just hope you don't have to get a special license because I am already going to have 2 to toat around

brittain,w-2 said...

I thought the iReal was pretty cool. Its kinda cool that you can talk to other iReal users through the iReal system. If you want to go faster, you simply put it into "aero dynamic" mode to go 20mph at least.

mayfield,s-1 said...

I think its cool, but I think it would be useless, it only fits one person.

allensworth, z-2 said...

i have to admit that the i-Real is one of the cooler things that we've blogged about very futuristic and spiffy but i also have to say that it's not an all around fantastic idea it leads me to believe that wall-e was a sinical prophetic film instead of the cute harmless cartoon comedy everyone believes it to be

reed, k - 2 said...

It does look like some kind of a wheelchair. But I think it would help Japan out alot because its so over crowded. I do wonder if you get a helmet with this new ride cause I think it would be dangerous to get on the road without one.

Patton,A-1 said...

i think its pretty cool.im lazy anyway so anything thats gonna keep me from walkin imma use.its very cool lookin and i like it a lot

Patton,A-1 said...

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

That thing looks like people will over use it and then get fat...plus it looks not all that kool. I do like the color concept and features though. Also, 20 mph is not as fast as I would like to go. Have to admit though it is safer though. Just don't go driving out on the highway with that thing. I wonder if you can trick it out. That would be so koo.

Dietrich,R-3 said...

I wonder how durable the chair thing is because by the way it looks if it tipped over or you went off of a jump i would think it would break.

gregory, m - 3 said...

I would love to ride in the selectric toyota that way I wouldn't have to pay for gas.

allensworth, d4 said...

WE ALREADY HAVE WHEEL CHAIRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but its kinda cool that it goes 20miles an hour

taylor, Q - 6 said...

The i-real seems like its going to be something that interest plp for a short amount of time...its not really amazing to me...i agree w/ the others...its a modern wheel chair

Brice, R-4 said...

This I-real is pretty crazy. Although i would much rather drive a car. But if someone let me use this thing for an hour or so i would totally do jumps and drifts and other crazy stuff on it!

And Zack stop using small difficult words you don't know

edwards, a - 4 said...

Honestly, I think it's a really cool design by the Japanese (they are always making things so futuristic), but I would not ride this because I'm not a sitting person. I prefer doing it the old-fashioned way: walking.

Abdul-786 said...

i don't really like it that much because its like a modern wheelchair for rich people and look at the saftey the saftey in that chair sucks u don't even know when u goona fall and once u fall ur gone!

Copeland, Juston7 said...

i think that it is cool but i dont think that i would use it that much though i think that it would be fun to go fast and get to other places but the i real i dont think is not for me

Maness, J-6 said...

they already have those on a market, theyre just a little more archaic. theyre called rascals and they have been helping our elderly traverse this world for many many years. it is a bit different though, seeing as it can go 20 miles per hour. it looks pretty cool and to be honest, i wouldnt mind having one, although im not too sure how popular it will be.

Byrd,N-6 said...

Ok so the i real is pretty cool but seriously how lazy has our world gotten that we need a chair to drive us around at walking speed and also make it to where they can talk to each other, so now we dont need to walk or even talk anymore...this is sad

Sauceda, Maria=]- 6 said...

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...THe I-real looks kool but more appropiate to use like a modernized wheelchair..It's kinda geeky how you can invite other people for coffee with the chair but would it be hard to see which one were your friends. It's pretty amazing they will use this. WHHATT?? It has no cupholder...dat is such a negative thing about it!. THis chair/vehicle should go faster than 20 mph.

Cuarenta,A-6 said...

weelll technology keeps getting crazier!!!!!
how lazy are people getting that we have invented a chair that will drive you around at walking speed....
they need to add something about like for rainy days!!!!

Meredith,B-6 said...

lol yeah this is kinda cool but its missing some major features such as a cup holder and what happens if it rains your in real trouble because you dont have a holder or anything.....so its not the greatest thing in the world but its still kinda cool

lee, s - 7 said...

I-Real is cool. I never seen before. It is very fast and smooth. In Toyko, Someone made it called I-Real. and No more wheel-chair.

arnold,t.7 said...

I like the i real but it not cool for people to have it around because it not safe to have cause it dont have seatbelt on there and there is no cuphold and what happen if it rain how would you keep yourself dry? but then and i would like to have on for the summer to just ride.

packard,a-2 said...

at first i thought it was pretty slow until i watched the video and saw that it goes 20mph and i thougt that i have no use for this because i live 35 miles away and it would take me 3 days to get to nac!! and i could not use it on my ghetto, pot hole, red dirt road!! can you say, eat dirt!! ok, so i would not purchase one if it was just for leisure. but, i would get one for colledge so i could zoom around campus while im wiping crusties out of the corners of my dreary eye balls!!

Lanham said...

Zachary Lyle . . . Wall-e is a cynical (by the way, that's how you ACTUALLY spell that word) prophetic movie. Really? Gosh I just thought it was animation. LOL

And yeah, somebody better design a cupholder for me. And maybe a pop up umbrella.

Jones,C-1 said...

i think its pretty cool, although it just looks like a suped up segway. I wouldnt ever be interested in getting one. A bike would be just as good. This seems like it would be really good for handicap people to get an upgrade from the normal 5mph powerchair.

arriola,brett-1 said...

i think its not a good idea imagine someone going down the road on one of those little scooters and then BANG no more mr.ellis.

Adams,B-2 said...

I think the i real...is really cool..i would love to ride...it everywere

allensworth, z-2 said...

Brice, don't hate just because YOU don't know what they mean

Davis,J-2 said...

i think that good cause i really believe that the old folk will love haw it is designed and how it roll

villanueva, manuel, N. 1 said...

I dont like the idea... I wouldnt feel safe in it, its to small

Bixler,T-6 said...

I think that it is amazingly cool new invention. I would love to have one of those . It could help out on a lot of traffic problems in japan and all over the world. It can also help with the air polution that we are makeing with the cars that we drive every day. This invention is going to do a lot of good.

Johnson,O-2 said...

Well if you’re looking for personal mobility vehicle I would go for a scooter or a motorcycle or something. But a thought has just occurred: you know those people you see on the streets with the wheelchairs and they go all over the place with them. I think would benefit them the most.

otis,j-3 said...

It really just is a fancy electric wheelchair, but looks more modern and pretty cool. I could see grandma riding around Wal-Mart in one of these; hopefully not running over any little children or other people. However, the lack of trunk space and no windshield really gives this personal vehicle no meaning and renders it useless for most people.

robles,l-3 said...

the i-real is off the chian. i could go to work in that thing. but what if i crash? would it kill me? were are the air bags? most important, does it come with a cup holder? in second thought i dont like it any more. i perfer to stay safe in my car and a cup holder.

Hernandez, Ruben 3rd said...

umm i think that..their not cool their just like upgraded wheelchairs. but maybe if i had one then i maybe i would change my mind..

anderson,p-3 said...

i dont really like it. it just looks like a fancy wheel chair to me and i really dont see people riding around in this except the old people who ride around in the electric wheel chairs that arent cripple. i think it will make people lazy.

tutt,matthew said...

I actually saw this on Top Gear as well, and I thought does it have safety features on it? If they come up with features I would buy it.

cruz,raymond,a-class3 said...

i think its not a good idea to drive that. it looks like a wheel chair but futureized. i mean i would drive it, i just wouldnt buy it.but its cool.

borerw-4 said...

the i-real is so stupid. its just asking for trouble. wheel chairs, thats all they are and did the person who made them not see Wall-e. was that kind of futur appealing to anybody.

Lopez, M-1~☺ said...

Personally, I don't think the iReal should be brought here at all. To any extent, it'd be too dangerous concluding on how fast the people drive here. Besides, the iReal will just give an excuse for people to be even more lazy than they are now a days. Seriously, people who can walk, do so if not, don't get one just beacause you're lazy.

Anonymous said...

THAT'LL BE A GREAT WAY TO DIE.... don't drink and use a three-wheeled Personal Mobility vehicle.

This is going to become one of the easiest ways to die... Motorcycles are dangerous but can be manuvered. This thing does not look like it could turn quick enough out of danger.

It also does not look that comfortable.

-Safe + -Comfort = Problems

cano,ruben-7 said...

ummm...i think that is a bad idea...what would happen if you are driving it and it feels...hahah that would be fun!!!

Rigsby,D-1 said...

I would love to have a ireal. I would really like the idea for some strange reason. It do look like a wheel chair but it a cool looking wheel chair that look very well made.

allensworth, z-2 said...

to jacob: i don't think it can go fast enough to kill anybody

chanelectronic said...

Firstly I have questions and concersns..
The i-Real would elimate CO2 emissions from the enviroment that cars produce... or does this travel on gas? They haven't really stated.

I like to decision its sleak - and definately smaller than a car. This would be a safer way to educate first-time drivers how to drive, but it would also be a danger to automobile drivers because its another hazard on the road - if they are driving on the road?

Thirdly, if this is widely accepted to replace cars wouldn't that mean that family of fours would have to by FOUR i-Reals to travel rather than ONE car for the entire family. Thats slightly ridiculous, especially if they are prized at the same expense OR MORE of a car.

My fourth and last concern connects to what Ray said.. we all have legs. Why in God's good name would I buy a motorized scooter if I can walk? Has anyone ever seen Wall-E when the human race got RIDICULOUSLY oversized from those floating chair thingys?
(My first thought when I saw the i-REAL is the scene when the entire human race was miniature-whales in floating cars.. it should took me a minute to think of which movie.)

chanelectronic said...

I always think of something else once i post..
but more or less this invention is just slightly ridiculous. Seriously we're pushing younger kids to excersie, and the government is now having resturants post calories.. this chair is just taking everyting 5 steps aback.
I really could only see this chair being use for medical reasoings - such as people who have leg surgery and need to drive somewhere and they don't have someone to depend on, or the elderly (lord knows they don't need to be driving.)
But there's too many concerns I have with this invention to buy it.
