Blog 15 12/20/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

We will continue the kitchen talk when we get back. For this week, I want to do one of my favorite things.

Just in case you've been living under a rock, it's almost Christmas time. In fact, here's the exact time left until Christmas:

Copyright allthingschristmas.com

For this weeks blog, pretend I'm giving you $300 with which to buy TECHNOLOGY gifts. They can be for you or for someone else.

Here are the rules:

1. It must be TECHNOLOGY.
2. You must spend all $300, or as close to it as possible.
3. You must post links to your stuff so we can all go look.

You may blog on Tuesday like we do for Yanko. Please try not to suck the fun out of this for me.

Have a wonderful, RELAXING holiday season! See yall rested and ready to go in January.

Blog 14 - 12/6/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

Before we get started, allow me to just say . . . COME ON CHRISTMAS BREAK!!! I know you guys are as tired as I am.

Continuing our discussion of kitchen innovation, this week I have two videos. The first one is made like the lady is from the 50's, but she's really not. It's from a company called Lutron, and everything you see in that video is in existence right now. Also? Most of it can now be done from applications for your phone, which we will talk more about in the future. The funny thing to me about this video is that even though she's showcasing all this kitchen control stuff, if you pay close attention you'll see that see's using a real retro hand mixer like your great-grandmother used to use. That cracked me up.

The second video is called Living Tomorrow and it's about data integration in our future kitchens. To my knowledge this stuff is not in production, but will be very soon. The kitchen that's showcased in this video is a smart kitchen. It know how much water we're using, how much electricity we're using, etc. The guy also talks about embedded RFID chips in our food packaging that lets the oven know how long to cook the product.

Essentially, what these videos tell us is that the kitchens of the very near future will have lots of video screens. These kitchen designers have obviously never seen me cook. I end up with stuff everywhere . . . heck this weekend I ended up with salsa verde on my toe. All I'm saying is I hope those screens clean easily.

So my questions this week are:

1) How much data integration does your kitchen have now? Does the cook in your house have their recipes stored electronically? Or are you guys still old school written stuff?
2) Does the cook in your house ever watch video of somebody cooking something and cook along with them at the same time?
3) Do you think they WOULD do that if it were easier to access the video . . . say . . . like the monitor was built into the counter?

Answer all three questions to receive credit this week.

AS ALWAYS, UNLESS WE ARE LOOKING AT YANKO YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THURSDAY TO BLOG!

Blog 13 - 11/29/10

Hi There! Thanks for logging in!

I want to explore emerging cooking and kitchen technology for a few weeks.

Back in the 1950's, Frigidaire (an appliance company) made a short film detailing how they expected the kitchen of the future to look. They had ovens that would somehow miraculously bake and frost the cake and out it would come complete with lit candles. They had a slot where you stick in a recipe card and out pops the recipe you chose, already made up and ready to eat.

To which I say . . . (!)

I don't know about YOUR kitchen, but mine's not doing any of that cool stuff.

So on Thursday we will watch the Frigidaire film and one more old film about how folks thought kitchens of "tomorrow" would work. We will be making fun of those folks, I can guarantee.

In the meantime, be thinking about what YOU would like in the kitchen of the future. On Thursday after we watch the films we will post our own vision for future kitchens.

EXTRA!!! For November 15th!

HOLA PEEPS!

Speak Up Tomorrow is a survey that Congress uses to determine how much you guys (as teenagers) are using / relating to Technology. They then use the results to figure out how to divide up money to schools to advance technology usage.

Let me say that again: Congress makes money decisions based on the Speak Up Tomorrow surveys!!!

Please go to:

Blog 8 - 10/25/10

Hiya! Thanks for logging in!

I would like to continue our exploration of advancing automotive technology.

Recently I've been seeing a Lexus commercial that highlights their new driving simulator. It's all round and sparkly and stuff, so of course it caught my attention.

When I started looking into this new piece of technology I was surprised to find out what a big deal it is. Big. Dang. Deal. Apparently, what had happened was, Lexus decided they needed to take their simulator to a higher level and actually add some elements that have been missing in previous simulators. Elements like 360-degree views, sideways accelerations, outdoor conditions and driver conditions (what happens if the driver is distracted, sleepy, etc.).

Inside the simulator there's a full size Lexus vehicle on a turntable. So not only is the vehicle moving inside the simulator, but the simulator is moving inside the building that was built for it that's over a football field in length. Sweetness! I would so love to get my hands on one of these.

Does anybody remember that simulator ride at the fair where you get inside thing shaped moderately like a space shuttle, and it has video and it moves up and down and is supposed to make you think you're on a shuttle launch? Yeah . . . it's kinda like that thing but a million times better.

I also found a link to a company in Sweden that's been building simulators since the 70's. It's the last link on today's list and I thought it had some pretty good stuff.

So read the articles for the week. Please, for the love of Pete, DO NOT push play on any video or The Man will be calling me from across town.

To get credit for the week please answer one of the following questions:

1) Where do you see this technology heading?
2) What do you think happens to the simulator if you crash? How do you think they would address that?
3) How do you think this technology is linked to video game technology?

As always, if you'd like credit for this week you'll need to wait to Thursday to answer and you'll need to answer one of the questions. Maybe we can be more successful with that this week.

Blog 7 - 10/18/10

Howdy Folks! Thanks for logging in!

I'm not done with this Google Car yet. It's boggling my mind.

I brought the video for us to watch this week. It makes the concept a bit more real I think. It also states some facts that weren't in the articles. Such as "it's not meant to replace the driver," and "Google has no idea when this car would be ready for the public."

The BUQUAD article poses some interesting questions. Questions such as "What happens in challenging situations, such as where traffic is being directed by a policeman?" and "How would you earn a drivers license for this vehicle?"

http://buquad.com/2010/10/18/google-makes-your-car-think-for-itself/

The TECHCRUNCH article is kinda funny. It's about how people were actually spotting this car on the road for months and had no idea what it's purpose was. Also? The article makes the point that if you are driving down the road taking pictures / videos of other cars, YOU'RE the reason we need the Google Car in the first place!

http://techcrunch.com/2010/10/09/google-car-video/

The Daily Beast article is the best one I've found yet. It states that everybody was surprised at this technology because they thought it was 5 to 10 years out. It also talks about sticky issues, like merging into traffic which it calls a combination of social etiquette and Newtonian physics. How would the car handle that if we've taken the human element out?

Also, apparently this was all preceeded by a challenge issued by the Pentagon in 2004. The Department of Defense wanted to encourage automotive engineers to brings robotics to vehicles in hopes that by 2015 we could have completely robotic convoys moving equipment and supplies into and out of war zones, so that fewer lives would be at stake. How could this technology end up helping our soldiers? We haven't even thought about those implications yet.

So for blog credit this week, answer one of the questions that have been posed. Go back and READ MY WORDS and figure it out. Wait to post until Thursday if you'd like credit.

Howdy Homies! Thanks for logging in!

Are you reading my words yet? Or are you skipping right ahead to the links? READ MY WORDS!

Also? Don't post on Tuesday unless we're looking at Yanko. From now on if you do you'll have a zero for the week. I want you to THINK about the topics and let them work on you. I don't want ill-informed opinions with no thought behind them.

Having said all that, let's get on with this weeks blog.

I want to go to car technology. There's a lot of really good stuff in here, so we'll be on cars and their changing technology for several weeks.

This week I want to talk about the newest buzz where cars are concerned. Google has very recently announced that they are developing a car that will drive itself using video cameras, laser range finders and range sensors.

To which I say . . . !!!

I don't think I'm ready for this. I don't think I trust technology enough to give up control of my car. I don't think I trust technology enough to want to be on the road with a bunch of other people who have given up all their control as well.

Go take a look at these articles. Please wait to blog until Thursday.

Blog 5 - 10/4/10

Hola peeps! Thanks for logging in.

This week I want to do something that we will do several times throughout the year. I want to look at *sparkly* new technology. I have a favorite site for this:

http://www.yankodesign.com/

Yanko is about the DESIGN of technology. This will be the ONLY time when I don't mind you blogging on Tuesday, by the way.

Follow these instructions:

1. Go to Yanko.
2. Go to the bottom of the page and click on the link after the page numbers that says "Inspire Me." Ask your neighbor to help you find it if you can't.
3. Tell me which page you landed on. You may not use the first five pages.
4. Pick a product and tell me WHY you like it or how you think it could change our lives.

Here are a couple of entries for example:
Page 27. Wall Mounted Washer. This one is hard for me to believe. I'm not sure about what kind of job it would do. Also? It looks REALLY small. I wonder how many loads I would have to do in that to equal one real size load?!? Also on Page 27. I'm diggin' that watch without hands that just shows the color of the time. Who needs watch hands anyways?

This is a DISCUSSION. I want opinions with reasons!!! If you can't give me that much effort, then I can't give you enough effort to type a 100 in your grade book!

Blog 4 - 9/27/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in.

So sticking with the subject of medical technology, I thought I would get a little personal this week. This past year was a tough one in the Lanham household, as we were visited by the big C word. Cancer. Scary just to look at isn't it? Kinda makes my skin crawl just seeing it sitting there.

Anyway, Mr. L (who I lovingly refer to as Better Half) was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. On the very first day of summer vacation he had a radical robotic prostatectomy. That's right, ROBOTIC. Oh the technology implications . . . His surgeon actually sat ACROSS THE ROOM as he operated on Mr. L! Just like a video game. He has these goggles he looks into and he moves his thumbs and across the room the robotic arms that were INSIDE MY HUSBAND proceeded to do all the things that surgeons used to do the old way. Except when he was done, Mr. L only had 5 small incisions instead of one great big huge one. MUCH faster recovery time.

So go take a look at the pictures of the robot. Also, take a look at the article about Catherine Mohr (girl power!), who is one of the designers of the Da Vinci system.

Please read Tuesday. Please blog Thursday. You may give an opinion about the use of the robot. You may reference another article about the robot (please leave me a link). You may give me an opinion about Catherine Mohr.

Please remember: you must advance the discussion in some manner to get credit. "That's cool" or "I like that" is not advancing the discussion. Not now, not in May at the end of the year. You must TELL ME WHY!

You may also reply to someone else's post.

Howdy Folks! Thanks for logging in!

Continuing our discussion of advancing medical technology, I want to take a look at this inventor named Dean Kamen. He was approached by the Department of Defense and asked to make a prosthetic arm that would more closely mimic the movements of a real arm with real fingers on the end of it.

To that end, he invented this arm which he named the Luke Arm (as in Skywalker). I want to watch a short video about Kamen from the TED conference, and then I want you to go read about the arm.

http://spectrum.ieee.org/biomedical/bionics/dean-kamens-luke-arm-prosthesis-readies-for-clinical-trials

Please spend Tuesday reading so that we can be prepared to blog on Thursday.

In order to receive credit for this weeks blog you may do one of two things:

1) Talk about where you can see this technology going. How can we benefit from this type of technology in the future?

2) Find other articles on either Dean Kamen or the Luke arm and tell us what those articles said. When you use resources that I don't send you to, you have to give me the link to YOUR article. Also? Once an article has been quoted 5 times it can't be used again.

Blog 2 - 9/12/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for coming back . . .

So I want to jump off into some pretty deep medical technology. There's a fantastic Readers Digest article about some of the newest medical advancements. Please follow this link to view the article. Please don't stop at page 1 . . . there are 5 pages.

http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/new-medical-technology-lifesaving-and-life-enhancing/article34117.html

I want you to read on Tuesday. I want you to let it work on you a couple of days and come back and post on Thursday. I want you to choose at least one of these medical advancements and give an opinion on it. How can it benefit you or someone you love? How can you see it advancing? Alternatively, you may discuss / debate someone elses opinion that's already been given.

As always, you must advance the discussion to get credit. A "yes" or "no" or "I don't care" will earn you a zero.

Here are MY opinions:

A) Ewwwwwwwa for using spider silk to repair broken bones. I mean, it's cool and all. But I absolutely ABHORE spiders and anything arachnid related.

B) Yay for fighting asthma in new ways. I developed asthma earlier this year (!) and it's a pain in the rear end to deal with.

C) Microchip for Meds skeers me. To think that I will need a reliable wireless signal for the microchip to transmit my meds to me? Pffffft. I can't even get a wireless signal reliable enough to play Words with Friends!

D) Using a scorpions sting to cure aggressive brain tumors? Well, at least those little buggers would have SOME actual use on this earth!

So what do you think? Talk to me . . .

Blog 1 - 9/6/2010

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in.

Let me 'splain how this will work:

Every Monday morning I will post a discussion question relevant to technology. You will have the entire week to post a short blog answering the question. It's very simple . . . you either advance the discussion or you don't. It's either a 100 or a 0. You can also respond to a thought posted by another user to advance the discussion. Every Sunday evening I will check off names. So you have from Monday AM to Sunday PM. Grading closes at 6pm Sunday. The first ten minutes of class on Tuesday will be devoted to reading the blog, and the first ten minutes of class Thursday will be devoted to answering the blog question.

Here are the things that this discussion is NOT:

This is not a social forum. All you guys have MySpace / Facebook / Twitter for that stuff. Holla at your friends on those sites.

This is not a place for you to ask me questions about your grade. Please remember that EVERYBODY will see all of your communication on this site. If you have questions about grading policies, etc. please see me before or after school, before class or on my conference period (6th). Barring that, please email me at
rlanham@nacogdoches.k12.tx.us.

This is not a place for you to air grievances of any kind. Bad language, derogatory comments and intolerance of any kind will not be accepted. These will result in blocked usage for you, and zeros on weekly discussions for the remainder of the year.

What this discussion IS:

This is a place for us to explore how technology is affecting our daily lives. You guys are digital natives (meaning you were practically born with a cell phone in your hand) and you are not accustomed to thinking about life before this technology came along. I would also bet that most of you haven't given a lot of thought to where this technology is going either. Well, that's what I want to do here.

One more thing:

To the best of my knowledge we are still the only classroom in the district to use blogging as part of the classroom learning. Occasionally our Principal, Superintendent, and others from the district will be blogging with us. All eyes will be watching as this district prepares to incorporate more technology into everyday learning. Please keep that in mind. Let's have fun, but please be responsible.

Here's what you need to do now:

Make sure you are logged in and hit the "comment" section. Post a comment to me. By posting this first time you are agreeing to:

1. ALWAYS read my words. You should never just log in and click links. Doing that will cause you to miss the questions that I want addressed.

2. Leave your display name as I have it set. I have 92 students right now. I have no intention of figuring out nicknames every week.

3. Comment in the correct section for the week.

4. Understand that you get one (1) makeup blog for the YEAR. Because this blog is available 24/7/365 from any computer in the world, I don't allow more than one makeup. Go home and bookmark it. Go to the library and bookmark it. Always remember that if you're absent on Thursday when we comment, you'll need to get it taken care of before Sunday at 6pm.

OK, questions? Talk to me . . .

Blog 32 - 5/16/10

Howdy Folks!

Welcome to your last blog of the year!

Can you believe we've been in this room together for 10 months? I know I can't. I'm so excited for summer to get here. For the first time in my adult life I'm going to have the WHOLE summer off. As in no college classes. No summer school. No work of any type. I'm VERY EXCITE! (Borat reference)

But . . . I've got lots of really good memories of this year. I can honestly say I've truly enjoyed our time together. So many of you guys have made me laugh. You guys have been a lot of fun. And we've gotten a lot done too. Think about everything we've been through . . . six weeks of drill and kill. Adobe Illustrator. Photoshop. InDesign. Audacity. Flash. Whew! Makes me tired just thinking about all that stuff.

And for you DGA people, lemme just say thanks for paving the way for this new AVP class that's coming. You guys have been willing to dive in and work out some of the bugs and I appreciate that.

So to honor our year together I thought I'd put together a list of stuff that's come out of my mouth this year. And also a list of stuff that's come out of some of your mouths too. Just for grins.

Out of my mouth:

1. I'm JUST sayin'

2. Get up or get out!

3. I don't have a magical answer to pull out of my butt for that.

4. I feel like poo.

5. Has your heart stopped beating?

6. That makes me wanna bang my head on the desk.

7. Please do not make me get up and come over there and kick your chair.

8. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and stop doing drugs right about lunchtime.

9. Have you pressed F1?

10. (@ Seth) Get that "O" off your broccoli!

11. I'm gonna need you to simmer and settle (more times that not @ Cassidy Lyn)

12. Save frequently!

13. Do not waste this day . . . you will need it on the back end of this project!

14. It scares me that you know how long a body would continue to live without it's head attached (@ Magali).

AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE . . .

15. 'Cuz if I ain't happy, ain't none of yall gonna be happy either! (@ Advisory, affectionately known as Bebe's kids).

From other people's mouths:

1. I don't do drugs! (Kenneth Crenshaw)

2. Ms. L, I *AM* the radar (Vincent Cole, when I told him he needed to get off of administration's radar).

3. I'm so more than tired today (again Vincent, right before I suggested he go to bed sometime before 4am)

4. Gucci baby! (Neontay, at least 1000 times in my room. He's obsessed I'm tellin' yall.)

5. Leave us alone! We're working! (4th period?)

6. Cesar G, taking baggies out for his project: "Survivors . . .", "Zombies . . ."

So for your last blog of the year I want you to do at least one of three things:
A. Add to my list.
B. Tell me your favorite class memory.
C. Leave a piece of advice for the classes coming next year (ala Mrs. Christian)

And once more, for posterity:
It's time for the Friday talk. Wanna hear it? Here it goes . . .
No drinking and driving.
No riding with anybody drinking and driving.
No doing anything illegal, unethical, illicit or immoral.
No kissing on anybody of the opposite sex.
No kissing on anybody of the same sex.
In fact? Why don'tcha just stay home.
You may go to church on Sunday and go have lunch with your elderly grandmother, but you must come immediately home and study. That is all. Have a lovely summer.

Blog 31 - 4/29/10

Hola Peeps!

Before we get done with movie technology I want to look at special effects. There's a lot of cool stuff in this topic.

Sometimes I'm surprised by things I *think* are effects which actually turn out to have really been filmed. A perfect example of this is Transformers. I thought all the action sequences where the cars turn into their alter egos were probably special effects. Nope. They actually built full-size models with moving parts to film close-ups of. This is why it pays to sometimes watch the "extras" on the DVDs.

My favorite movie special effects comes from my favorite movie of all time . . . The Abyss. The movie is about this underwater drilling and exploration team that encounters an alien life form that is made of water. The aliens look so real, like drops of water that have come together. I'm telling you, if you haven't watched this old-school movie you have no idea what you're missing. Hey Beth . . . wanna watch it with me?

PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT click anywhere it asks you to play a video. I would like to avoid spending next week in Mr. Chaddick's office. LOL

So take a look at these effects links. To get credit for this week: 1) please comment on at least one effect OR 2) tell us about YOUR favorite movie special effect.

Hey Homies!

You know how last week we talked about 3D coming to our living rooms? I would like to explore the ways in which 3D has changed over the years. There have been many technological advances from the 3D movies of old (with the horrible paper glasses with one red eye and one green eye) to the new 3D (where we get to wear cool looking shades that just appear to be gray).

Where did the red and green plastic lenses go? Why don't we need those anymore?

Back in the day when 3D first began to get popular, it made people nauseated. I don't know about you, but I can think of no worse Friday night date than being stuck in a movie theater with a bunch of barfing people! In fact, one of the first reviews I read of Avatar was from someone who had gone to see it in IMAX 3D and got lightheaded and felt they were going to pass out in the theater. Thankfully, that's not the *normal* feeling you get from 3D anymore and was probably a product of that particular viewing being 3D AND IMAX.

So read up chickadees. See what you think about it. Answer one of these two questions for credit this week: 1) where do you think this 3D technology will end up? OR 2) how do you think this will change moviemaking in general?

Hola My Peeps!

This week I want to explore the new 3D television technology.

Included you will find a couple of articles about how we're all going to be watching 3D TV very soon, and a couple of articles about how the technology actually works.

Tell me what you think. Are you jonesing for this technology? Can you not wait to get the 3D TV into your living room to test it out? Could you not care less?

I don't know how I feel about it. I'm a bit on the fence. I think it's cool that we have the technology to be able to do this in our living rooms, but I'm not convinced we're all going to jump on the bandwagon. I view this kinda like I viewed Blu-Ray. Yeah, it's pretty and all . . . but I have no intention of spending that much money because I don't watch enough television to get my money back out of it. Somebody who watches all the time would probably be better able to speak to this technology than I can. Any takers?

Hola Peeps!

Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to be a video game tester? Sitting around all day, drinking Dr. Pepper and eating Cheetos and testing out the latest releases of all the coolest games on the market? (Maybe the Dr. Pepper and Cheetos is just MY fantasy)

Well, turns out you're not the first to think of it. In fact, a reporter (a chick!) for the Seattle Weekly News did just that a couple years back. I think what she found will actually surprise you.

So take a bit of time to read this article. It's long, but it's a good read. Wait to comment until Thursday.

Blog 26 - 3/22-10

Welcome Back!

I hope you guys had a great Spring Break. I know I did.

I think I can make the next 49 days. Hopefully with some semblance of grace and dignity.

Anywho, this week I want to continue to look at video technology. In particular, I would like to discuss how the military uses this technology.

Please read the article and give me an opinion. Alternately, you can find your own article on video game technology being used in the military and comment on it. Just please make sure you post the link.

Blog 25 - 3/8/10

Hiya!

So we're switching gears this week. The new topic is . . .

. . . wait for it . . .

. . . video games!!!!! Woooohoooooo!

That, by the way folks, is completely fake enthusiasm. I could not possibly care less about video games, but I have dug up some pretty interesting links for the next few weeks. We will end this section by reading about what it's *really* like to test video games for a living.

So yeah. Video games.

I have no time, no tolerance, and no compulsion to sit for hours in front of a TV or monitor while make believe characters do what I instruct them to do. I am just *barely* continuing to exist in FacebookLand. I simply don't have the time. Not to mention my old reflexes don't serve me as well at they used to. About as close as I'll get to a video game is occasionally taking on a family member in a rousing game of Guitar Hero. Which lasts for about 4 minutes before I'm bored silly.

So take a look at these links about new video game technology, and technology that started out as video games and ended up somewhere else. Tell me what you think about any of these. You are also welcome to talk about other upcoming video game technology, but you MUST post a link supporting your discussion.

Hiya! Thanks for logging in.

In honor of the Olympics, this week we will look at Olympic timing.

Admittedly, I'm not a big winter olympics fan. I am, however, married to a HUGE winter olympics fan. Guess what's been on at our house EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. for the past 10 days?

Uh huh.

Anyway, I'm starting to like it more and more. Mostly because I don't really have a choice because NBC has pre-empted every bit of their normal programming (Office, anyone?) for two weeks.

So the geek in me wants to look at the timing devices, etc. Take a look at the following sites. Give me an opinion about something in one of the articles.

Blog 22 - 2/15/10

Hola Peeps!

So we've reached the time of the year where I'm brain dead. You know that time . . . the part between Christmas Break and Spring Break where you start thinking "there is no possible way I can make it through the rest of this year."

Yeah . . . that's where I'm at.

So for this week's blog I would like for YOU to log in and give ME two ideas for future technology blogs. Preferably stuff you're actually interested in. Not just an answer for the sake of answering.

In order for you to receive credit both ideas must be technology related.

Hola Peeps!

So this week I'd like to explore how Apple introduces products to an unsuspecting marketplace. Have you ever noticed that we don't even KNOW we need the stuff until it starts hitting the market and then we get all jealous and . . . covetous? Is that even a word?

Look at these links. Pay particular attention to the stories about how they sold Cingular (AT&T) on letting them develop the iphone. It's interesting, really. Do not stop on page 1 of the stories, particularly the Wired story.

Log in and answer ONE of these questions. You MUST get the answer correct to receive credit. Please be aware if you copy somebodies answer and it's wrong, neither of you will be receiving credit.

1. What is Apple’s trump card?

2. Name one of the support headaches that occurred when the iphone hit the market.

3 Name one of the other companies Mr. Jobs reached out to while still in negotiations with AT&T (which was named Cingular at the time, meaning that Cingular is NOT the answer to this question).

4. Approximately how many people had seen the iPhone by the times Jobs announced it at Macworld in 2007?

5. What company did Jobs approach in order to build a phone that could bypass the carriers?

6. According to BusinessWorld, why are Apple design details impossible to get?

7. How many hours of negotiation did it take to finalize the deal between Apple and AT&T?

Blog 20 - 2/1/10

Hola Peeps!

So last week there was much ado about the Ipad. Steve Jobs made an announcement that apparently made the world stop spinning for a minute.

To which I say . . . meh.

Don't get me wrong. I think the thing is cool. Do I need to run right out and get one when they become available in March? Not so much.

I also am not convinced that people will run out and buy one of these if they thought laptops were too expensive. I bought my last laptop for about $450 and it can do lots more than than Ipad.

I think this nifty little device plays right to the hardcore nerds and technophiles. You know the folks I'm talking about. The ones who have to go right out and purchase whatever the newest piece of technology is, without any thought to it's usefulness or longevity.

So I want to explore the Ipad a bit. On a larger level, I want to explore over the coming weeks Apple's devotion to introducing us to technology we didn't know we needed. And also I would like to explore how Apple designs products and gets them to market.

Check out ALL these links. Give me an INFORMED opinion about how we could use this device.

Thanks for logging in!

Let's get deep this week.

I want to talk about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his thoughts on technology.

In 1964 Dr. King delivered a lecture the day after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in which he told his audience at the University of Oslo that "material advancement was meaningless without an accompanying moral structure." In other words, the growing abundance of technology is undermining the human spirit. My favorite quote from the article is: "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually," he said. "We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers."

This week I'm asking you to think, REALLY THINK about Dr. King's words. DO NOT post until Thursday. I want his words to work on you a little bit.

He is telling us that technology advancement needs to go hand in hand with spiritual advancement, or it's all for nothing. THINK. Do you agree with Dr. King? Disagree? WHY? You will answer both of those questions to receive credit this week.

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in.

Along the lines of last week's discussion, let's talk about technology and weight loss.

Here are a few sites devoted to gadgets / technology and weight loss:

http://www.technologyevangelist.com/2007/01/5_techie_weight_loss.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/technology/personaltech/31smart.html?_r=1

http://inventorspot.com/weight_loss_for_the_lazy

and just for fun, go look at this one from the 1930's:
http://www.boingboing.net/2008/03/16/electric-bubblebaths.html

GOSH I wonder why it didn't go over? Hmmmm . . .

I don't know about yall, but I'm digging that hula chair. I could lose weight just by sitting all day! Woooohooooo! And did yall see the thing that turns the TV down when you stop peddling / exercising? I have ALWAYS said if there was a device like that more people would exercise just to power their TVs.

So pick one and give me an opinion.

Blog 16 - 1/4/09

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

So let's continue on with our talk regarding sports and technology. I'm going to link to a Discover article that includes 20 interesting things you might not know about technology in sports. Choose one and comment.

http://tinyurl.com/5qwb75

So here's my comment:

I was around when Fox Sports invented the "glowing" hockey puck. Although I wasn't a "hard core" hockey fan, I can tell you that it was distracting as all get out to try to watch. While it was supposed to make the game easier to keep up with . . . it really just made me want to bang my head into the coffee table. That trailing glow was just infuriating. I wish I could find some video from that era.

So pick one, give me an opinion.
