Blog 21 2/7/11

Hey Yall! Thanks for logging in!

Sticking with the subject of video gaming, there's an article I want you to read. Yes, read. Yes, it's long. But it's very good.

Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to be a video game tester? Sitting around all day, drinking Dr. Pepper and eating Cheetos and testing out the latest releases of all the coolest games on the market? (Maybe the Dr. Pepper and Cheetos is just MY fantasy)

Well, turns out you're not the first to think of it. In fact, a reporter (a chick!) for the Seattle Weekly News did just that a couple years back. I think what she found will actually surprise you.

So take a bit of time to read this article. It's long, but it's a good read. Wait to comment until Thursday. Answer these questions for credit: 1) What surprised you about this article? 2) Now that you've read this article, would you want this job? 3) Why or why not?

Talk to me . . .

I am surprised that people get paid to play video games, adults anyway. I do not think I would want this job. It just does not seem like something I could do.

bryan, j - 4 said...

I was surprised that it said the f word twice. I would not like this job. I could not play games for 24 hours or be around a bunch of nerds for not a lot of money. It seems like they didnt have a life.

vargas, k - 4 said...

What suprised me about this article was that it was VERY long. Also that they don't really give good interviews. They could've hired some weird pervert/ drug dealer and they wouldnt care. I wouldnt want this job because I don't playing video games. Also, i feel like if i'm gonna waste my day sitting down and killing my brain cells by staring at a screen, that i would want to get paid more than $8.25 an hour

the thing that suprised me about this article was just the discription she gave of the job nothing to do with what one pictures when you think of {GAME TESTER} i wouldnt want this job 1 because i dont have the patience of sitting for 8 hours doing the same thing over and over again, 2 because its not cool to "have" a job that your not even sure of and 3 it just doestn sound interesting :)

1) What surprised you about this article?
what surprised me waqs that game testers dont acually just go in and start playing new games all day the have to follow procedure and turn the xbox on and off hundreds of times a day and that sucks.
2) Now that you've read this article, would you want this job? after this article i dont think i would be imterested in this job at all it seems long and repetitive all day.
3) Why or why not?
Well simply because it seems boring to me and turning and xbox on and off all day just not my thing to do.

emborgo, t - 4 said...

It surprised me a lot that people actually want to do this job. And it surprised me that doing this job isn't just about playing games all day long with some cheetos and coke but you also have to turn on and off a hardware repeatively for several hours.
Now that i've read this article, I wouldn't want this job. I wouldn't want it even if i didn't read the article.
I find being a game tester a waste of your time. There's plenty of jobs out there that are worth while. I find it impossible to be able to sit for several hours straight playing a game.

carrillo, c - 4 said...

Well first of all this surprised me because this was a lady, and this is very surprising that a girl would do this. I would do this job. because I really enjoy working with game systems and this would be the perfect job for me.

page, c - 4 said...

What kind of surprised me was the interview. It didn't at all seemed like it was an interview.
No I wouldn't like this job, because I cant just sit in one place testing games ALL day, especially for the price they're getting paid, plus that could be very fattening in a way. I'm also not a huge fan of video games.

milo, v 4 said...

What surprised me the most is that soft drinks where free but juice was 25cents its like they want you to become fat cause of the soft drinks n sitting in a chair the whole day. I dont think that i would want this job cause im not able to stay still for a long time. Also cause i just dont see the fun in turning on and off an xboxs for like a million times in one day

tedder, d - 4 said...

Im surprised that so many people get laid off at that job and they have a routine everyday. i wouldnt like this job because i dont have the patience for it, unless it was an outside gaming system.

What suprise me about this article is that it was a lady which was in charge but other than it wasnt really much one thing for sure is that i wouldnt want this as a job is just to boring i have to be active if not i wont last long.

Melissa is cra-cra and she left her blog signed in and I hijacked it. Bwahahahahahahah!

1)something that surprised me is that theres a job for turning off and on the xbox and for playing it. it also suprised me that if you're late for the job somebody will replace you and fast.
2)i would not like this jod
3)because i dont like playing the xbox cuz i dont know how 2 lol. plus i would hate turning off and on the xbox for 12 hours that would make me MAD!

Reyes, A-4 said...

1) What surprised you about this article?: The only thing that surprised me about the article was that, as a tester, you don't always work everyday.

2)Now that you've read this article, would you want this job?: I still want this type of job because I am a gamer, and I am willing to test any game as long as it's mildly interesting.

3) Why or why not?: I believe that video games are currently the world's best form of entertainment and I want to start designing games that will blow people away. Being a tester is a good way to learn about the process of making games and become a designer.

madkins, b - 4 said...

The most suprising thing about this article was how sick the players actually got from just playing the games all day,I mean who knew playing video games could literally make you sick to your stomach! It's probably because they are out of shape and need to go find a tredmill! I understand being tired and being sensitive to light but nasuea.never.
Honestly I wouldnt want this job as an adult maybe as a teenager in high school. It dosn't seem like an actual career to me.
It's called getting paid for being a bum!Get off your sorry behind and go get a real job! These people are probably still staying at their parents house eating cheetos and drinking coke(no offense mrs.L
)
I mean yeah it's great business to be in when you're creating the game but you're basically throwing you're freaking life away.I'm like WTC! People actually get paid for this?Come on now people!

young, j - 4 said...

im honestly not really surprised by much of this. making/testing a game is an extremely complicated and rediculous process, but hey someone has to do it. and all the fools who think the job will be the easiest/best thing ever come flocking in in only to get their butts laid off, which is the only thing that got me. i had no idea that so many of these people get laid off and sent home due to the most simplistic things. regardless, i could probably handle something like this. just sayin'.

I was surprised that it wasn't everything that everyone made it out to be.The turn-out rate surprised me also. I would not like or want this job AT ALL, because i dont really play video games that much and i dont think i could be playing them for 24 hours or be around people who likes to play games that much. Plus the pay isnt worth it.

curry, b - 5 said...

I think that the thing that surprised me the most was that this job wasnt everything that it was cracked up to be. Im not really a gamer but i wouldve wanted that job before i ready this article. I kinda based my idea of game testing from Gradma's Boy. But after reading this article i would not like this job simply because it isnt a consistant paycheck and a majority of the things they made the gamers do seemed pointless and boring to me.

mejia, c - 5 said...

I was suprised that people would like this job. I would not like this job. It seems pretty much boring. I like playing games for about and hour or two but not 24 hours for not much money. Thats as not having a life.

vineyard, w - 5 said...

I didn't know how in-depth and concerned these companies were about how well their products ran and how much human involvement they had in their testing processes; the title of video game tester doesn't live up to the stereotype at all. Now that I've read this article, I wouldn't take this job unless I really needed some spare cash through some mindless button-pushing -- I'm not much of a gamer anyway.

Myers, K-5 said...

The surprising thing about this article is that people are paid a nice wage to play video games. Wow, wish things were that simple.

I honestly couldn't do this job and be happy about it. I'd feel like a waste of space on a cushion. Why waste my life playing video games when I could be doing so much more? Just saying.

johnson, d - 5 said...

the thing that surprised me the most was that they actually pay the people to play the video games... and i know i would not like this job because i like playing video games but not that much. they would have to pay me ALOT of money to play all day.

ARR3GU1N,R-5 said...

I am surprised that people get paid to play video games all day.
This would be the job for me bcuz its fun:D

velazquez, n - 5 said...

what a surprise i didn't know that people got paid for just sitting down and play videos games. i think that would not be good job for me because i could not sit down and play videos games for more than an hour. its a good job for people that can do that but for me is not.

adams, i - 5 said...

i was very suprised to find out that you actually get paid for just testing video games all day. no i would not want this job because it would be a waste of years and years of college to just get a job testing lame games. and the pay is not enough.

hernandez, a - 5 said...

the most surprising thing about this article is the fact that testing a video game sometimes consists on just turning on and off the game for continuous hours and that most of the time you dont even get to play
of all the jobs this is the one i would least be interested in. yes i like video games but not enough to spend 8 hours "playing" them and least of all testing them. not just that but i wouldnt be able to stay sitting down or lying down in front of a tv for such a long time

Thompson, C - 5 said...

honestly i wasent suprised becuase ive met a game tester like the ones in the article and he said its not like how evryone dreamed it to be. I still would like the job so i could test videogames and even console updates befor they released, and i like finding glitches, but the 24 hour shifts wouldent be fun.

ewing, r - 5 said...

I was surprised at how little video gaming you got to do when you were a game TESTER... I never have wanted this job, and now, I REALLY don't want this job. Why would I submit to never really knowing my work schdule to have to sit in front of a TV for hours upon hours just to make sure that others will be satisfied? I, personally, would rather work as a waiter, know my hours, and work on what the gamers make PLUS tips.

murphey, l - 7 said...

I was really surprised that after someone was hired and showed up on time the next day, they were out a job because someone showed up earlier.

I would not want this job mainly because, I would not want a job that may not be there all the time and would not want to have a repeated job through the whole day.

reyna, j - 7 said...

it surprised me that they actually test their product!! and i would love a job like that and would like to find out where i can apply and what qualifications are needed

leblanc, f - 7 said...

Okay the f word has tooo go if i can't put it in my school article why can they put it in their public article i don't care if they grown im grown too so i guess thats means i can use it to but any who i do not want to sit some where all day in front of a video game and press on in off my finger will fall off and if somebody comes earlier than i do to work and tries to take my job i will shoot them in their phalanges cant work without fingers now can they.... hahahahahahahahaha but i would hate to have this job what if the weird guy in the corner playing a dora game tries to take my goodies im shooting up everything.

albro, d - 7 said...

what surprised me was that the people dont get to play the already fixed version but they test the raw material of the games.
i would not like to have this job because i am not that much of a gamer, i dont know y video games just dont peck my interest that much.

wiggins, m - 7 said...

I was surprised that they got bored at testing games at some times. I would still want this job because i could deal with the boring parts and enjoy it also.

arnold, t - 7 said...

What really surprised me aobut this article was video game testing is fun but there is WAY more to it then just hopping in a chair and playing black ops all day and night. This is a dream job for me, testing and being a game designer, however it would get a little irritating i think after a while because it is the same exact thing every single thing.Theres no action packed, edge of your seat type experience with game testing its just a hobby any fanboy would love to get paid for. Ill stick with graphic design ;)

ponce, j - 7 said...

What really surpriced me is that a videogame tester barely ever even gets to play a game! all they do is sit behind a flat screen tv and try to find bugs on the new updates that the companies make for the gamesystems, and if u dont get there early, other ppl can take ur place! so unfair. i would never want a job like this, id die of boredom or kill the person who takes my place

nickson, n - 7 said...

i was suprised people actually died from playing video games too long.i wouldnt want this job at all because it seems too boring. there is no excitement if everyone is drinking red bulls.

lanham2010-eramirez said...

what surprised me about the game testing was that you actually have to wait a day or two to start playig the real thing. i didnt know it took more than just play games. i thought that people would just go in there to play games not check out the system their playing with. this is just something i wouldn't do because i dont have the patience for this kind of thing.

johnson, dasmine - 7 said...

I am surprised that they don't just only test out the video games, and it as a lady working there and she wrote the article. Never would have thought a lady would work there They do a whole lot more than what they should. No, because I already don't like to play video games that much, and the job wants to much for me, and is also very boring. You don't get active, so you know I wouldn't be able to be there.

redfield, c - 7 said...

I am very suprised that video game testing isnt actually all its made up to be, when you think of video game testing you think of some really dark room with one of those comfy video gaming chairs and like three tv screens, but from the article my perspective has totally changed. Now that I have read this article the job of video game testing doesn't actually sound all that it's cracked up to be, it doesn't even sound fun, turning a xbox on and off all day does not sound any funner than having a regular job. Also I wouldnt like the fact that any day someone could show up before me and take my job, I want some security when I have a job not just that some days I might have a job and some days I might not.

soto, e - 7 said...

woah i had no idea what the testers go threw, what a surprise. i would defenately not want this job because it seems very boring stuck in a room all day long just staring at a screen, i think that would hur my eyes.

ramirez, j - 7 said...

1)What kind of surprised me is how fast she got the job
2)i would want a job like this because it might be fun.
3)but i think it would get boring in awhile im not so sure if i real do

delagarza, g - 7 said...

Something that surprised me about the artical is that some people would actually get there really early to take someones position.
I wouldn't like to have that kind of job. It seems fun and all but I would get tired and bored of playing a video game all day.

morgan, d - 7 said...

The thing in the article that surprised me the most was that it didn't seem like any of the testers actually got to play games during thier time there. I wouldn't want the job of a tester because I don't reallt like the idea of sitting around in a building all day doing repetetive tasks.

brasher, k - 7 said...

im surprised that the testers get there jods and then some1 can take their place if their like 30secs late. but i would not mind this jod as part time, to get alittle money on a day off, or if i was lucky if i would get to play a game, iwould get to see a new game or system thats going to come out.

Unknown said...

I agree with a lot of people that have commented already, I seriously was shocked that all they did was not literally test the video games and that they just did retarded things that you could have other people do. You would need someone to test a video game to see if people would play it because if nobody enjoyed playing the game, then what's the point in wasting the money to have it made. Instead they pay people to just turn on and off a system. Ridiculous. and No, I do not want this job for the reason I just wrote above.

williams, j - 8 said...

1)after reading this im surprised that beisng a game tester it not as fun as i thought it was
2)and after seeing this i do not want to become a game tester because i would hate to turn a game consule on and off all day long

stinson, m - 8 said...

ok i would have to say what suprised me the most is that its not as fun as I thought it would be. second and third question is no i would nt like this job. Why is because it isnt stable enough and lets face it I love video games but not that much. so yea thasts mt reasonin

hernandez, b - 8 said...

What surprised me about this article? The honest truth about the "glorious" life of video game testing. Would I want this job? No. Not in a million years. I enjoy gaming, it's something I'm good at but I do not want it to consume my life and work. This article has merely sealed the deal.

pearson, m-8 said...

What suprised me most was the little things they pay people to do, like the on off switch. When i think of testing games i think of testing if they're any fun, not if they work or not. I would absolutly NOT want this job (i never did but now i REALLY dont) because i would get SOOO bored and would not enjoy it at all

matthews, j - 8 said...

Probably the most thing I'm surprised about is that, you're not always going to get to be the person to test out a videogame. Even if you do get to, it's probably only a certain function of the game or just something really dumb. Plus, I'd be so annoyed if I were just turning off and on the game system. I think I would just hit it with a hammer and say it exploded. I think I could maybe tolerate the job, if I can get their super early to sign up for the good jobs, but no. Just can't sit in an empty room for hours.

murillo, j - 8 said...

i'm surprised that you start your first day of the job not playing video games. It's boring having do to boring labor in this job. The rules are EXTREMELY strict and I wouldn't a job that would make me bored and likely to lose my job for any small mistake.

rhodes, t - 8 said...

I dont think i would be very interisted in the job not only for the fact that the pay isnt all that great but also cuz i would hate to test the on button for hours on end

carter, j - 8 said...

I think what surprised me the most is that the article was written by a girl. I was not aware that a girl could be that into video games. Now that I've read this article, I most certainly would NOT want this job, mostly because of the irregular eating and bathroom habits associated with it. Also, I have a very short attention span so there is no way that I could sit (or stand) somewhere for hours on end doing the same thing over and over again.

rodriguez, s - 8 said...

1)What surprised you about this article? The Bullpen List? you have to be on your tiptoes to play video games?..not cool
2) Now that you've read this article, would you want this job? I do not have the patience.
3) Why or why not? would i want to wake up go to work and get sent back home because someone beat me to my job..NO.

shankle, m - 8 said...

the thing that surprised me was that you can get paid over minimum wage just to play games and see if they make you bored.i would take the job but not as a career job because the pay is too low.

scoggins, l - 8 said...

I'm surprised how tedious the job actually sounds, and how little job security there is. I would not do that job because I couldn't tolerate sitting in some room all day.

vazquez, j - 1 said...

I would never want to sit around and test how long it takes for the xbox to turn on or off all day. This "job" doesn't pay much to risk my health and at least 2 hours of xbox is fine by me. My brother is all into games but I don't think even he can last that long.

wallace, o-1 said...

Im suprised that game testing isnt the dream job that its all cracked up to be.
I would NEVER want this job because for one i couldnt sit down all day and play video games , and second im not a big video game lover .

butler, m - 1 said...

i was supprised that this article was written by a woman? NOT that women don't play an important role in society, but because not many girls GAME. this job sounded great, until i heard this article. i thought being a tester you could play games and be paid for it. i was terribly wrong.

fuentes, e - 1 said...

What suprised me about this article was that there are actual people get paid. No I wouldn't want this job. Even before I read this article I still wouldn't have wanted that job. It sounds boring to me. I wouldn't want this job because I really don't play video games and it doesn't sound interesting to me.

juarez, a - 1 said...

What surprised me the most is that people actually want this crapy job. I would hate it and probably want to kill myself everynight. Im not even a gamer person at all. It seems boring to do this all day long especially turning the machine thing on and off for hours!

niu, y - 1 said...

I'm surprised that Xboxes also need that a lot tests. I know that a PC game needs a whole bunch of tests to avoid bugs, because every PC is different.
OK, I confess that I don't have an Xbox.
I absolutely don't want this job. I'd like things to be perfect. While i'm playing a game, every single tiny little bug can drive me crazy. It's ganna kill me to face all kinds of bugs for 16 hrs!

patton, e - 1 said...

It surprised me that people actually want this job and they liked it enough to write a 6 page article aboutit!!! There is no way i would ever want this job. I would get so sick of just sitting there and wouldnt feel productive.

what suprised me about the article is that a female is a passionate gamer..i wouldnt think a female would want to have a job as a video game tester..i dont kno if i would take that job i mean i like playin my xbox 360 but not for a day job

santoyo, l - 1 said...

What surprised me about this article is that the women said that sometimes they don't even play videogames at all. Thats wierd because if your a Game Tester your suppost to play the games not just turn your console on and off for hours.

I would like this job if all the games I'm suppost to test were first person shooter because they are really fun. (Yes i'm addicted to Call of Duty Black OPS)

I think being the Game designer would be much better then testing the game because those folks that make COD games make millions in a matter of days.

Pina, R-2 said...

I would definitely not enjoy playing video games all day long. Even if I got paid for it! I can handle an hour maybe two hours at the most, but I just can't go for more than that. Being paid to play game is cool and all, but it's just not for me.

Wow, I always thought being a video game tester would be great. The way those people have to endure all that brain melting crap took me completely off guard. I always imagined it would be like, going to play a game that is in developement to find bugs and gliches. But no, you have to do a bunch of mindless, tedious hardware testing that would make someone kill themselves. So no, I would not do that job. I think I would rather jump off a cliff than do that. If I can't take it when my Xbox decides to not work, I doubt I would stay sane trying to figure out what is wrong with an Xbox a HUNDRED MILLION TIMES.

Rodriguez,A-2 said...

it suprised me that so many people love playing video games but being a video game tester sucks!! i probably wouldnt want to be a video game tester not only because of what i read from this article but doing this as a job would probably suck the fun out of video games..

Parkhurst, M-2 said...

I am surprised that video game testing isn't as easy as picking up a controller and playing your favorite game. I personally like the real world outside of my wii, xbox, playstation etc., so I would definitely not sign up for this job. Their pay doesn't match up to being in a daze 24/7 either, $8.25 is not worth giving up all other hobbies to me.

anderson a-2 said...

wether i want this job or not is still in question because i dont play video games as much as i use too but if i was getting paid just to play games all day chances are i would take it. The only thing that suprised me about this article is the fact that they were only taking about xboxes not PS3's IJS......

The first thing that surprised me about this article was that video games could kill you! I knew it wasnt healthy for you to play all day, maybe leading to obesity and stuff, but For video games to give you blood clots, I had no idea! Secondly, I would not want this job because the position is not gauranteed.

I think its crazy how many people play videogames. I think if your a college kid or just desparate for a job it would be a pretty good job, its not like it is that hard to play games and get payed.

Toth, d - 4 said...

Nothing really suprised me, cause i kinda figured it would suck as much as it would be awesome, and i dont think i would unless it was my only resort, because its a pretty cool job in a way , but it really does suck, especially the fact that they call you in and even then you still might not get to work.

Silva-A-5th said...

I was surprised that peopleget paid to play video games. I would love to do this job, I would be geting payed for practicly doing nothing all day. But I don't think I could do it for long.

wallis, z - 8 said...

After reading the article, I realize that i most definitely NEVER want to be a video game tester. Maybe it's the 0 factor of job security, or the pain in the butt of working 24 hours straight? Either way i do not ever want to get involved with this for minimum wage....now if we start talkin about $20 - $30/ hour... we have some business haha

fuentes, m - 1 said...

this article was actually pretty suprising. i mean i know some people that actually wanna do this type of thing, but they just say that because they play video games all day, they don't work, and they think that all they will do is like play video games for fun and get paid, which by this article i know is not true. to tell you the truth, i would NOT want this job. why? because 1. i cannot play video games for half a day straight. 2. i think that the gaming thing is unhealthy and nasty, like if the people have nothing beter to do. 3. i cannot sit in front of a tv that long cause my eyes get watery and i hate that.4. i think that i dont think its worth the money you get paid.
