Blog 22 - March 17, 2014

Hiya!

So as I was looking around last week for more medical stuff, I happened to find this video about PRINTING our own MEDS. What?!?

This guy, Lee Cronin, is a professor and a chemist. And he has this crazy idea that would could use something kinda like that 3D printer (remember the dude that 3D printed the heart?) and derive our own medications.

Watch the video. I'll post a directive on Wednesday.

http://www.ted.com/talks/lee_cronin_print_your_own_medicine

Wednesday edit: Give me one question you'd like to ask Lee Cronin. PLEASE NOTE: If your question has already been asked you'll have to try again to receive blog credit. No two questions should be alike.

How would you prevent the misuse of your product?
It seems to me that there would be a lot of people who would want to use it to get their next fix.

How will having a 3-D printer in your house be cost effective? You will have to print off all of the stuff you want and regular printer ink is already crazy expensive. You can only imagine how much this stuff will cost.

What exactly made you feel as though this would be the next revolutionary technique to evolve the new creation of medicine through one app when so many things could possibly go wrong?

My question to Dr. Cronin is how much time would it take to make a certain amount of medications at a deadline?

What are the drawbacks in printing your own medicine? It seems like he doesn't want to say that anything will go wrong if everyone does start doing this, but most likely it will have a negative effect.

Erin that was my question too!

Graded. Great questions. Keep 'em coming.

PS? Erin has already asked about misuse. Any question like that, i.e. "What keeps me from making my own meth?" won't be counted.

Roll on.

How exactly will this idea work? It just seems strange to me that someone can combined certain molecules & come out with a certain medicine. & what if you print a certain type of medicine that could be very dangerous or doesn't help what it was originally needed for? How would you know which ones are the right ones to use? I know we live in a place where we are becoming more & more advanced in technology, but this is just strange to me.

although being able to print meds seems like an pretty awesome development especially to the elderly... but I don't think everyone should be trusted to do this. Does a doctor have to give you permission to prints certain medications? If not the world looking at not only a good development but a new crisis to worry about.

I think it is cool, the concept of printing medications for some people this is a very6 helpful tool say if a person cant leave home to get their meds or maybe they cant even walk to the mail box to get them either then they can print them in their own home and people can even set limits on how many meds you can print like if you only take a certain amount of the medication then there can be an online prescription that says for the printer to only make so many of this med

How would you protect your product from being used by other people or companies? I'm sure that they'll use this to get more money and still your productivity to try to create something similar or even better than the product you made that they have stolen. Another really good question, Will there be discounts or would it be on sale?

Will it be possible to print exploding chemicals, special poison or narcotic? I don't think a device would be allowed to sold to anybody and I don't really believe in drugs. Think about how much people can get food for their whole life from the money, they might spend on developing such a printer.

ok a printer of any sorts cant make things out of thin air so you would still have to supply them with the chemicals and ingredients so personally I think this would only be useful at a doctors office where you're getting what has ben prescribed there's no abuse and the guy making it knows what he's doing can you imagine the suits if someone dies from a preprogramed drug
