Discussion 28 - 4/6/09

Thanks for logging in!

How about some more car stuff? I found this site that talks about the top 10 high-tech automobile safety features. Check it out:

http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/top10/114984/article.html

Pick one feature and tell me how you think it might change our lives when it becomes common on the cars we drive everyday.

Talk to me . . .

Adaptive cruise control/collision mitigation
Modern cruise control goes beyond just maintaining a constant speed. Thanks to sensors and the use of radar, cruise control can now adjust the throttle and brakes to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you if there are changes in traffic speed or if a slowpoke cuts in. If the system senses a potential collision, it typically will brake hard and tighten the seatbelts. Once it knows the lane is clear or traffic has sped up, it will return your car to its original cruising speed, all without your input. Of course, you may override the system by touching the brakes. The Mercedes-Benz and Maybach systems go by a less obvious name: Distronic.

Why cant we have the cruis control like on iRobot. It seems cool and all, but it could be better.

Eventually I think all cars will have all of the features listed on the website. I feel that they will all be of equal importance and beneficial to all motorist nation wide. However, I am as convinced about the rearview camera. Anyone who licensed should be able to successfully back a car up! (Sorry to those of you who can not?) The one feature that I feel will be of the most assistance would have to be Emergency response.

Calderon,A-1 said...

the REARVIEW CAMERA it is kinda helpful but if it is just like the old ones that it just show but it does not say how close things are so it might be a problem. but it will be a helpful tool.

the Adaptive headlights and/or night-vision assist would be the most helpful. Hitting deer and other animals is a common problem with most of the drivers in nac. This would help these drivers be aware of animals from 1,000 feet away. This benefits humans not wanting to damaging their cars and animals ont wanting to get hit by a car

Okay as kinda a heavy person myself, the Occupant-sensitive/dual-stage airbags sound pretty nice to me. I like taking risks (motorbike XD) and would like as much "life insurances" as possible

arriola,brett-1 said...

blindspot detection is the best because thats one of the most likely causes of wrecks !!!

Gilbreath,J-1 said...

With the rollover prevension/mitigation, if you turn a corner too fast or take a sharp swerve, "the vehicle [applies] the brakes and modulates throttle as needed to help you maintain control."

Oh yay...*snooze*

A system like this would certainly help to keep crashes from happening, or people from dieing, from a rollover. I hope...

rear view cameras/emergancy response, both very good things to equip with cars. The rear view camera will help prevent crashes or running over someone when you are reversing. The emergancy response is a good idea because it can prevent a crash from going bad to worse.

The modern cruise is the one I would injoy the most because it talks about the the facts about it;
I like the way it talks about the miles and the time it was invented, at the same time the cruise control does sound like it would be nice to see and watch every looks realy nice in ther own way.
How things can come up in life it is strange but thin again it is fun to see new things pop up in life....! the speed trafic in the cruise controll is pretty awesome to see new things you dont see everything.....!

Adaptive Headlights and Night Vision Assist would help me out the most, because i use up so much concentration to see and avoid things cruzing around at night, that i actually dont catch most things that i need to see. And not to mention the things, such as night joggers, old ladies walking around at night and NINJAS!... Would be much easier to see if the car saw it for you, maybe it will save a life or two.

allensworth, z-2 said...

i like the "Lane Departure warning/wake-you-up safety", if not only for the reason that that's the most unorigional nameing i've ever experienced....but it is a neat feature and is definatly needed and would be greatly welcomed by those driving home late at night

The idea of the tire pressure monitor is a great idea because our tires get on flat all the time without us not knowing the the tire was low! This would be good for us to know before it happens and we could be on our way.

packard,a-2 said...

i like the wake-you-up thing because alot of older people fall asleep at the wheel and cause major wrecks and this could prevent alot of those and save someones life. i also like the emergency brake assist because your car never stops in time before you violently crash into a large object that causes mucho pain!! so i would like to have this to stop when a jerk wad slams their brakes in front of me to get some mula from my insurance company! and they are nice to save lives to!!

brittain,w-2 said...

i think that the Rollover Prevention is pretty useful or can be useful. If it suspects that you turn too quickly or swerve to quickly, it quickly puts on the brakes and uses throttle to make sure nothing bad happens.

Davis,J-2 said...

the rearview mirror camera can cause alot of people to be unsafe becasue people driving with these kind of tools on the car can put people in danger cause the people that have this stuff will be paying more attention to the mirror camera than they will the cars that they are driving around....

Johnson,O-2 said...

I like the Emergency response thing. I think they should of had that years ago! I'm not sure but don't you have to subscribe to that like XM radio? Which thats kinda silly if you do. And the Adaptive headlights and/or night-vision assist is a really good improvement too.

mayfield,s-1 said...

Blindspot detection/ side assist/ collision warning, it will cause people to have less and minor crashes, in the parking lot, and other minor things.

Patton,A-1 said...

the sensors at the wheels are a good thing to have.that way u will know if ur tire is low and it will prvent u from having a flat tire.that way if ur on the road u wont have any problems with ur tires

Hernandez, Ruben 3rd said...

i like the lane-departure warning/ wake u up safety because there was one time when iwent off the lane off to the sidewalk..hahahaha..no but seriously it would help me..

cruz,raymond,a-class3 said...

I think the BMW night-vision system is whats ganna change our lives with driving. I see people walking on the streets all the time and iv have almost hit like 5 people.if i had the night-vision system i can never go wrong. i wont hit a single person walking on the road, not that i have before if thats what your thinking mrs.L, not me.

taylor, Q - 6 said...

The adaptive cruise control is neat.Im very lazy so it seems like its for me.I like the fact that it sences whats goin on around the car to make it easier.

Brice, R-4 said...

I think the Blind-spot detection/side assist/collision warning would be a awesome feature because blind spots are the one things that i am most worried about if i am driving and this feature would definetly help

allensworth, d4 said...

those are some pretty cool/neat safety features....its a good idea for those high-speeding cars out there....but no matter what kind of safety you think you have, if you have a 200mph lotus crash head on into an 18 wheeler....you're still gonna die

Auxier, Emily - 4 said...

Blind-spot detection/side
assist/collision warning.. This is a really good idea... maybe not just for me.. im pretty good at turning my head to see if there is someone in my blind spot, but for the idiots that dont really know how to do that... though its rediculous that they dont know how becuae its not that hard. There have been many times when someone wasnt paying attention and didnt look to see if i was in the other lane and almost hit me. Dumb peeople. So yes, this is a great idea =)

i like the tire pressure monitoring system i think it will reduce the number of car accidents and it will also make traveling safe.

It would be really cool if cruise control was even better then this and would actually drive it for you to steering and all like on iRobot, but hey guess we cant have everything we think we should

Copeland, Juston7 said...

i think that the adaptive cruise control will be very helpful and cool because most of the times you would have to push the break to slow down and then resume and now it does it for you reducing all the stress and allowing you to relax a little more

Cuarenta,A-6 said...

my favorite feature was the REARVIEW CAMERA i for one am not the best at reverse :) so that would be very helpful for me..

Byrd,N-6 said...

I think the wake you up safety feature is a really good idea because ive seen many people who just get tired while driving, like they're hypnotized and i think this saftey feature will save alot of lives.

I don't really care for cars...So yea, whatever. But I guess the Adaptive headlights and/or night-vision assist. It'd come in handy at night I guess. I don't know!! Who cares but they just would. It'd help people who don't have very good vision during the night time that and old people.

Adaptive cruise control/collision mitigation

This would be by far my favorite. I hate going down the highway and having to break for slow people and then speed up again while my cruise control is on.

Blind-spot detection/side assist/collision warning

This would be awesome. It would help all those sucky drivers not get into wrecks because they don't know how to check their mirrors and turn their head.

The Adaptive headlights and/or night-vision assist i think that is cool because it can save the dog and children in the car

Hollingsworth,C-1 said...

I'm a good driver but I'm so accident prone that I could use these advancements. BUT if my steering wheel started to vibrate all of a sudden i would probably freak out.

Maness, J-6 said...

the rollover prevention would've been really handy for me during my accident, but now overall the most effective would be adaptive cruise control, which seems to have the same function as autopilot from tv shows and such. it doesnt mention the cruise control having control over steering, so i assume it doesnt, and we must steer for ourselves. someday though, it will, and we'll simply just have to sit in the car and not actually do anything.

GARRETT,K-4 said...

the blind spot detection would be the most handy for me. seeing that whenever i drive my moms explorer i ALMOST have accidents trying to swithch lanes. this detection device could save m a lot of problems.

McCorvey,T-1 said...

Well, i think that the Adaptive headlights and/or night-vision assist is the main thing we should use. That's why most wrecks are, because people headlights are to bright which causes blindness of the other driver. So the headlights, and night vision is a big help in todays driving.

Ashley Manis said...

I do not like cars, they do not interest me. So all these "advances" really mean nothing to me.
But something that seemed useful was the cruise control. I think its pretty rad that it has a mind of its own (not to mention if yours breaks, sometimes it makes your car go faster, true story).
Some of these features, though they sound useful, aren't really anything new. The adaptive headlights, cars pretty much have that feature. At a certain light, the cars lights go on.

i like the rearview camera, i think it would be usefull.

anderson,p-3 said...

i like the rearview camera. when you look in your mirrors you cant really see everything behind you but with the camera it gives u a great view of whats going on behind you and will help prevent accidents like backing into people or hitting things that are behind you.

och,s-4 said...

I am a big fan of cruise control - especially on the tiny roads on the way to Tyler. I got pulled over once because I missed a speed limit change on the way home from Shreveport and have been scared to death of cops ever since...hehe. So the adaptive cruise control/collision mitigation one is cool to me. I haven't experienced the collision part of it but I like how in my mom's car there is the handy resume button so that it can kick you back up to speed after driving at turtle pace in the smaller towns.

edwards, a - 4 said...

I don't know anything about cars besides the obvious, so I'm gonna sound really stupid on this discussion. And I... think the rearview camera is a most sigificant to have in cars. If someone has kids or precious animals inside a car and he or she has to step outside of a car, then he or she would know what's going on.

borerw-4 said...

i like the tire pressure monitor thing, because i get really paranoid about flat tires and blow outs when i'm driving.

Cole,R-1 said...

Blind-spot detection/side assist/collision warning
is what i think would be most useful help take the guess out of blindspots. I sometimes need help in that department just make it easier

chanelectronic said...

the blind spot alert system. by far is the thing that would change my driving experiences because I'm always sooooooo scared to pull out/change lanes or anything because i'm scared of hitting someone. Certainely this would prevent less "hit and runs", and front-end vehicle damage. I remember once i saw a guy with a mobile home hitch to his truck slam into and hold his place against this small red car. And then he FINALLY moved over, and just drove off. Certainly the driver wasn't able to see anything, but it was stil a definate memory that i'll just.. always take into consideration when i drive.

The night vision system for a viehicle would be a great thing for people that live out where there is little to no light. If it can be put out there in an afordable way or come standard in most cars it would reduce the amount of animals and people hit at night.

Bixler,T-6 said...

I like the adaptive or night vesion lights. For alot of people like my mother cant see at night and it can prevent alot of acciedents and makes there love ones not worry about them driving at night.

cano,ruben-7 said...

I think the BMW night system is the thing that is goin to change the way of driving at nite..
it would prevent alot of ca wrecks and could save lifes.
