Blog 2 - 9/14/09

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in.

So there's this article on CNN.com about these new contacts that scientists at the University of Washington are developing. They are digital! They have built-in LEDs to augment your natural eyesight.

They say that eventually a more advanced version on this contact could become available that would scroll captions across the bottom of your vision. Information about the person you're talking to, etc.

It might also be used to monitor our health. According to one researcher "The eye is our little door into the body." You could be sitting there eating lunch and have something scroll across your vision that says "More water intake please, you are getting dehydrated." Or other health-related info.

Of course, the group has to do much more safety testing before this lens will ever come in contact with any of our eyes. But the possibilities could be absolutely endless!

For me personally, it would be difficult to get used to poking something in my eyeball. I cringe every morning watching Mr. L put his contacts in. Ugh! I don't know how you folks do it.

Anyway, follow this link and read the story:

http://tinyurl.com/pbdn69

Think about it for a couple of days. Let it work on you. Then on Thursday come back and go to the comments section for THIS blog (please make sure you land in the correct comments section) and post an opinion. Do you think this is really in our future? Do you think we're still light years away from this? Do you think it will ever really be marketable to the common man, or will expense keep most of us from participating? GIVE ME AN INFORMED OPINION AND ADVANCE THE DISCUSSION.

As always, a "yes" or "no" or "I really don't care" will earn you a zero.

You may also reply to someone else's opinion to advance the discussion.

And finally, you might want to briefly check back in on Friday to see if anyone has replied to you.

Talk to me . . .

I've actually read about this kind of research a few times before. I read the article you posted Sunday night. I think they have a long way to go with this. I don't mind the whole sticking stuff in my eyes, I'm used to that, because occasionally I actually do wear contacts.

I like the health monitoring to a point, I don't want my contact flashing "You are overeating", etc when I'm at a all you can eat buffet, they would ruin my enjoyment.

I think it would take a while for me to get used to actually having stuff flicker across my eye, I would enjoy get information about buildings and stuff while on a tour or in some new city or something.

I can't say I would be the first to try it when they finally meet safety regulations but I wouldn't mind trying it at least once...now on the other hand having glasses with they feature sounds so much easier.

Oh, by the way, I could totally see Shanika trying to stick one of these in her eye...that would make my morning or afternoon

Lanham said...

Ray . . . LOL @ the "you are overeating." Oh and I'm sure Shanika would not appreciate being the source of your entertainment!

So how's college? We need to go get a coffee sometime!

these contacts are an accident waiting to happen.i think its not safe because its going to destract someone.especially if they are driving and some message pops up saying "You are thirsty" someone is going to be paying more attention to the message than the road and then BAM!!!!! the car wrecks.i think technology can go too far sometimes.

Culbertson, D-1 said...

This seems too good to be true for sure. When I think about it, all I see is OmgVidGamesFtw. But they are going to be thousands of dollers for sure, if they even make it past safety testing...

On the other hand, gotta be upbeat about neat inventions like this! Can you imagine walking around and seeing all the information about everything you look at, and being able to SEE whatever you're looking at in PERFECTNESS.....Sweet...

mayfield,s-1 said...

I dont think I would want any contacts like that. I would just stick to the regulars one that you get from the eye doctor. The stuff they have programmed in it is weird to me.

Trikosko, M-1 said...

I think if you would look weird if you were using this because most likely no one would know if you were using it. I have the image of a guy sitting, staring blankly into space and spontaneously lauging at something he is reading or watching, which would be kind of creepy.

I think that it would be cool to have contacts that told you when you need more water espically for athletes when their practicing, i loved wearing contacts i wonder would they have different colors are just a clear contact?

The digital contacts sounds like something that should cost a large amount of money to actually buy. But either way, the contacts are a thing that people who don't take very good care of themselves need to have.

In some ways, the product would have to be bought at a very high price if ever sold on the market. Or unless that malfunction one day and like explode or something, then they're a fail.
I'd like to try them, but not if they explode or if the somehow get a mind of their own, that the contacts will somehow control the host. Creepy~

The whole gaming feature of the lenses sounds AWSOME!!! Its the coolest thing I've ever heard of! You can be playing video games in class and not even get caught! That would be the pinnacle of my existence...

Anonymous said...

lol...that's why you don't want to wear these lens while driving, same things goes for texting

jeffress,r-1 said...

I think these digital contacts would be great, because the gaming industry is a huge success now. It might be irritating but I would suck it up and play because I LOVE VIDEO GAMES!!!!! But until it was proved that the contact would not damage one's eye(I KILL YOU!!!!!!!)I wouldn't use it. Also if it was more than a few hundred dollars i wouldn't pay the price.

robinson,s-1 said...

Honestly, i think its a pretty cool idea to think about. If it will ever become a reality in our generation, i dont know, but i seriously doubt it.
Although its cool to think about, i only support this device up to a point. Health monitoring, i think, would be vital and beneficial to the wearer; something that could improve our health. But as for the gaming experience in the eye, i dont see the point. In the artical it states that this gaming and social networking could "create a new interface for...interacting with reality in general." However a step toward new and exciting video games is a step away from reality in my book.
If this ever was to become a reality, it would be both too weird and too expensive for me to ever buy. But again, it is cool to imagine it.

Great comments! Yall keep it up!

I have to say, in first period the conversation always leads back to video games and shooting lasers from eyeballs. *coughcoughCESARcoughcough*

And today we thought about where the sound would come from if we used these contacts? Would we wire it straight into our ears? I can just imagine using our noses and video control knobs. Oh lordy!

Brookshire,B-1 said...

I think the contacts would be a great invention. The contacts would make hard tasks easy in no time. I like the thought of playing video games while driving. You could keep one eye on the road and use one eye to play the video game. What i'm basically saying is that these contacts would be amazeing.

Morrison,K-1 said...

I think that the idea of these contacts are very interesting. I mean who wouldn't want to be able to access history on a building with just looking at it. But I see the downside, people who are easily distracted *coughkatiandotherscough* including myself could be a hazard just by walking. Gaming in the eye would be amazing! And when it comes out people will be seeing a horror movie about these taking over the human race lol. Also, I have never worn contacts so it might be a little odd at first. I'm way too poor to afford them anyway, but that's what dreams are for :P

Abernathy, J-2 said...

I think it would be useful but also dangerous. Having comments pop up and block what vision you have can cause accidents. Although it would be nice to know when you are getting dehydrated and stuff like that your body already gives off signals to tell you that you need to hydrate. All the contacts are is a quicker way to determine what is going on.
And it probably will be very expensive and very few people will be able to afford it if it ever becomes available. I personally am perfectly fine without sticking anything in my eye

Liles, T-1 said...

If you ask me, i think that while this technology is innovative, almost revolutionary, it could also be severly missused. Could you imagine if one was issued to a police officer and got into the hands of the wrong person, any persons personal information (credit card numbers, adresses, phone numbers ect...) could be easily accessed at any moment.

But on the other hand, knowing that a sever health issue is on its way in advance, WILL save many lifes, i guarentee it.

brooks,h-2 said...

ya iv read on this before too i believe it only has 1 pixel at the time being yet its cool even at that level iid go for it

villanueva,f-2 said...

I dont think it's such a good idea people could get distracted its hard enough not to get disstracted so its something I would not like to use. How much would they cost???

anderson, a-2 said...

I think the contacts are a great idea for people that want them, but me personally i consider them a health hazard. (E.x) you watchin tv in your contacts (if you can watch tv) and all of a sudden you find your favorite show and its a funny one so you laugh and laugh until you start crying and then..... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ you get the mess shocked out of you and now you have burned your retnas and your conineas or whatever the inside of you eye is called, all beacuse you wanted to be lazy and watch tv in your eyeballs.

Gonzalez, E - 2 said...

it would be cool, i would by it, but only if it came w/ games like grand theft auto

Goff,R-2 said...

I have to give scientific community props for reaching out and creating such an interesting product, but at what cost?

If this product were able to be sold to everyone and not just people who truly need them, like rocket scientists or surgeons, the they could cause more accidents that what are already happening.

People of all ages would be trying to use the full funtionality of the product while doing things like driving, which would initially cause wrecks which means injuries or death.

I have to agree that if the technology can really do what they say it can do, then i would have to imagine that the process of making the product would be expensive. which means that most people in the United States could not afford to purchase this product. which i think is a good thing because i don't think the people of today need this type of technology.

Another issue with this product is the fact that they are testing it on innocent rabbits. Although the scientists will tell the public that "it doesn't hurt the rabbits" or "there will be no long term effets to their sight", the truth will show when the public witnesses their dumpsters. i am an animal lover and this kind of animal cruelty is horrible and should be illegal. If this kind of product is hurting innocent animals, then the people of today Do Not need this unless it can be tested on people, since they are the initial speciese using this product.

Ok I'm done now.

I think this idea would be a bit of a hazard. A distraction that could cause harm to the person or someone else. While driving, if a message came across their view then the driver is going to be more focused on that rather than the car in front of them or the lane they are crossing into, its kind of a car crash waiting to happen. These contacts also could be distractions in class, a way to amuse ourselves without a teacher ever knowing.

Maybe if the scientists came up with another way for that kind of important information to come around in a convenient, undistracting way then it would be very useful.

Cortines,m-2 said...

That was a pretty good idea Ray had about having this technology in glasses instead of contacts. It would be super cool to receive information about....everything...and not have to worry about sticking a contact in your eye. But I guess that wouldn't work very well, since it's contact with your actual eyeball that provides the information about your health.
Even if it were a contact, however, I would totally support it. (Anything that gets me closer to living in a spaceship! haha) I would work very hard to overcome my...clustrophobia...or whatever it is that prevents me from being able to put in contacts.
On the other hand, the animal testing is a bit of a problem. But rabbits reading? Really?

Weatherford, R-3 said...

I think its kinda scary actually. If somthing like that knew so much about you, what if you dropped it somewhere? Someone could totally steal all of your "vital" information.
It's all good though, cause it's not going to happen any time soon.

Asquith,C-3 said...

I dont see how these contacts would be useful. it would be more of a distraction than anything else. I have enough problems as it is with my contacts, let alone putting a mini computer in my eyes. These would also be very expensive and could be a hazard to your eyes if not carefully or properly used.

Flynn,R-3 said...

Oh yeah.... The basketball team could really use these- I can see it now, Coach Mays typing up the plays and us seeing it through our peripheral vision.

Williams, T-3 said...

I don't know if these contacts are actually a very good idea. It's pretty smart and creative, but it could also be very dangerous. People driving down the road, reading something blinking in their eye instead of watching the road...i don't think so. There are already enough problems these days with texting and driving.

Also, who would want to pay for an expensive contact that can simply tell you that you're dehydrated? It's a lot of money to tell you something that you'll be finding out eventually on your own. Up until now people have been fine using regular contacts and i doubt anyone would actually stop eating if their contact told them to...

Deckard, D-3 said...

This would be a great thing for the public to have. but honestly, i don't think that it will ever be in our price range. I have no doubts that it'll be avaliable in my life time just not available enough for the middle class to afford. I also think that it will be dangerous for people to drive with these in there eyes cause it might throw there attetion off of the road.

I never cease to be amazed at the technology available today and the technology that will be available in the near future. Despite the fact that it is truly amazing and I respect it greatly, it always slightly frightens me.
I feel that humans are no longer truly human, but are becoming all too much dependent on the technology that is available to us. The negative result of becoming so dependent on such technology as this mechanical contact lens that can supposedly monitor our health is that we fail to know and become familiar with our own bodies. We have the capability to monitor our OWN health and KNOW when we are eating too much, when we are thirsty, when we feel that we are becoming ill, but we are too lazy and become dependent on an outside source to let us know these things. This is what makes us less human and more a part of a sort of robotic world.

i dont eventually wear contacts lens but i would definetly be happy to try those contacts they sound so cool and fun to wear i wonder is that all the contacts do.the contacts should tell you more stuff like if you wear an outfit and doesnt match the contacts will tell you no go take that off cause you not matching

This world make video games in class and cheating so much easier. and maybe i'd be able to read text messages from it.

Anonymous said...

i think they can be good and bad. the good part is the health monitor, because if your on a diet or something it can really help, but on the other hand it can also be dangerous because you might be driving and a song lyric might pop up and you wolu probaly crash

Padilla, J - 3 said...

The contacts seem pretty cool especially if it can inform you about your body while you are playing video games at the same time. It could only get better if you could download information onto it like your notes or homework. Well, that would probably not turn out well for teachers because then students could cheat, but then the teachers could use their contacts to shoot lasers at their students!
I support these contacts, but I doubt we will be using them for a while since having to put microchips and wires into your eyes does seem a bit dangerous...

reichert, s-3 said...

I wear contacts almost everyday so i wouldnt mind the sticking in the eye part...but I would be kinda creeped out by all the health warnings and the information that might pop up when I look at someone... it just seems almost stalkerish (is that a word?) if just by looking at someone I'm meeting for the first time I sudenly know there birth day, there age, home town, and there personality perks...and what if the wireless system starts messing up (as they alwayse do) and it sudenly tells me that the guy siting next to me REALLY needs to pee?....well...that might be fun (for me not him)...

Hawkins, M - 3 said...

The idea of these contacts should be droped. Where will the power supply come from. To be able to have words digitally scroll across the bottom of the contact means that it will have to have an internal power unit, that means that it could short out and shock you. Instead they should put the idea onto glasses like Ray said would be much easier and safer. And the whole thing will the rabbits is not right, not only could it hurt the rabbits but how will we know if it works, the animals can't talk to us.

This thing has some advantages, BUT it has many mistakes that could take place, case in point. You're driving down the road with this thing in and the "radio signals" loose reception, when going through some trees and you loose your sight in an eye (or both if you have 2) and you have a wreck. Besides, if people get irritation with contacts in imagine what it would be like if you had that in!!! O.O

Pina, R-2 said...

What if you're driving and you look at a person in a car, and it gives this huge description of the person, making you unable to see the road, and then you crash and die!! XD

So we're moving into the age where we're all tryin' to be like RoboCop, huh? umm...I can't argue against the idea (there's more pointless stuff out there). I think they could be using their time and money to develop something that makes a bit more sense than a mystical-magical contact lens.

The health monitoring isn't such a bad idea really. I sure would like to know about the technology that tells you when you need to drink water or read out your blood-sugar level. (Doesn't our body give us signals that tell us that anyway? Do we really need a device to tell us we're thirsty, hungry, or are about to pass-out due to our type 2 diabetes?) But I guess some people need it these days.

The lens works off of radio frequencies so I wonder how well the device will work. You're sure to end up somewhere where you wont be able to receive radio waves and...OH NO...you wont be able to know when you should drink water!!

The one line in the article that was talking about "displaying information about the person you're talking to" was a little strange. How will the lens recognize the person and how will information about the person be entered into the lens?...oh, I forgot that it's mystical-magical.

These things are gona end up being rediculously expensive (only rich folks are gona be runnin' 'round with these layin' 'cross their eye balls) and they're more than likely a long way off from being on the open market. I'm not looking forward to them because I don't wear glasses or contacts and I can't see myself worryin' about those things and keepin' track of'em.

...I just got a vision from the future of my children pestering me for a set of the new "RoboCop" contact lenses...*SHIVER*

there's still a lot they have to work on before i'd use it myself
there used to be a movie i liked that had something like that i don't remember what it was called, but i still wish i could have something like that
i can imagine how it could be used for health, too if i had something wrong, i'd want to know right away ive only got one kidney, so i could be able to tell what i need if i had those contacts the glasses wouldn't be as useful for that

I dont think i would actually be able to stand something being in my eye flikering stuff in front of me.

Knowing me i would be in my own little world and then something flikers by and im just like "Omg what was that?"

If it were something like sunglasses i would totally wear them but having it in my eye seems a bit too risky. And the fact that students are making these would worry me alot!!

*I think that would be neat to have some contacts like that. I could get use to them because I already wear contacts, so it wouldn't be hard for me to put them in my eye's everyday.*

Spruiell, S - 4 said...

People with diabetes and other health problems that have to be monitored regularly would really benefit from contacts that could monitor those things without pricking a finger or checking the blood pressure or body temperature or whatever...Ok, so these would be really beneficial for monitoring vital signs and whatnot (health-related things); but when it goes into texting and playing games, the contacts become a safty issue. Texting while driving (and I am sooo guilty of this) is pretty much the leading cause of wrecks and car related incidents in the United States...just imagine if everyone could text and/or play games with one movement of their eyes. More and more accidents would occur, companies would get sued and lots of dumb people would get rich when they're involved in wrecks because they're playing World of Warcraft on the interstate during rush-hour. While its a cool thing to think about, it can never be a reality...there are too many idiots in the world who would misuse the technology and then expect to profit from their own stupidity. Mmk...my rant is over.

Ugh wierd. also, say I had them in and all the sudden pictures that would be nasty like old guys in speedos pops up without my decision also wierd. that is going to haunt me.

Personaly, I think that contact lenses were made to irritate people's eyes, but this new contact lense that the scientists are making is way different. I saw the contact lense's picture on the link and it looked like those little wires might sting the eye alitte, just a little. I think that if they fixed it up a little more they would be able to do the things they said they wanted to do with the lenses.

Although the lenses are far from being perfect, they would be much better if they weren't made for games like some people speculated, because first of all, that can be dangerous, like if you are playing a game and you die - and this is just my thought - what if the contact being connected to you too, kills you? I don't like the idea of wearing contacts except for cosplaying at conventions (Zombie eyes would be totally awesome- no iris), but I suppose there may come a time when they'll be necessary, as I'm a bit near-sighted in my right eye. However, like Katy M. said earlier, I'd get waaaayyyyyyy too distracted if there were 'on-screen' read-outs flashing in my eyes every now and then. Also, I think that I'd be a bit weirded out seeing things that no one else can see... I mean, The Voices tell me how crazy I am enough. I don't need technology confirming that for them.

Okay this sounds cool to begin with. I think the idea of checking on people with diabetes is a good idea. I have a blood sugar problem so it would be nice to know when I have to have a snack.

I wear contacts now but it took me a year to get used to the idea of sticking objects in my eye. I don't know if I'm quite ready for those contacts.

People could get very distracted while they are wearing those contacts. Think of all the car accidents that could happen. We already have a problem of people using their cell phone every second of the day (not me). I can just see students not paying attention in lectures (because they are actualy reading some book or watching some TV show that is programed on their contact).

I think this technology is too early for any of us having to decided whether or not we're going to wear them. I just don't know how I'd feel when a picture suddenly pops up in front of what ever I'm looking at. I basicly think it would be a distraction. I can see a use for it when it comes to health reasons.

I agree with Mia on the fact that humans are becoming wayyyy too dependent on technology, some people can’t go ten minutes without looking at their cell phone, and high school students can’t tell the time unless it’s on a digital clock. Not to mention having to pull out a calculator to do very simply math on that part.
This also crossed my mind, would the scientists be able to make it to where you can ignore the pop-ups? Like on a computer and you get an IM, it just stays in it’s little box at the bottom. And wouldn’t it be able to give you the choice of what info you wanted to view?

Mia . . . good point about becoming more dependent on the technology. It is scary, isn't it? Technology *always* will have failures.

Morgan & Ryan . . . good points about the rabbits. How are we supposed to know if it actually worked? Not like the rabbit can tell us . . .

Seth . . . stalkerish is absolutely a word. Well, it is now anyways.

Cassidy . . . I can hear it now. "But daddy, we NEED the new ROBOCOP lenses. We'll just DIE if we don't get 'em. All the COOL KIDS have 'em." LOL

Alecia . . . it was Terminator.

Sydnee . . . hang up the phone and DRIVE! LOL

Katie S. . . I caught that mirror to the soul reference too.

I never knew so much information could be gathered on the surface of the eye itself. The technology today just keeps getting more and more high tech.

If these contacts do end up getting released to the public, when will this be? I don't see them coming out anytime soon. Also, what price will they put on these?

I can honestly say that I do not believe I will be taking part in this next step of health monitoring. Perhaps if these were glasses I would be more likely to try this new technological step. I am very nervous about having items near my eyes as is, and the idea of an electronical device in my eye makes me cringe a little. Still, I cannot help but be amazed at the advances we are making.

All I have to say about this is that its going to be a great opportunity for game develpers to start a new way to play video games. Just imagine the endless possibilities that the Nintendo Wii brought into play just with motion detection, now being able to move your eyes would help you interact with the game, maybe you would have a setting for pausing the game if you look away from the screen or you would no longer need a joy stick, just a small motion of your eyes would turn your character around. The possibilities are endless.

This could be useful, but yet it seems pointless due to the fact that we can usually tell when we need things (sleep, food, water) due to brain impulses.

everyone just keeps talking about the negative side of driving with these contacts. but they could easily be programmed with something to help drivers pay attention to their driving, like a speedometer floating in front of them. They could possibly help detect obstacles or even display an arrow along the road to act as a gps.

i have always dreamed of this invention. i have even thought of it in the past while taking a a gross test or trying to recite somthing from memory

I think this a great idea, but sticking little contacts in my eyes just doesn't sound fun. I would rather have like glasses with the technology. On the downside i can see that it would be a distraction in some tasks like driving, school, or anything you need to focus on and not multitask. Also they would probally be very expensive so ill stick with using the internet and other information devices.

These contacts could do alot of good too not just bad. I for one think that it would be pretty cool to have contacts that could pick up radio waves. These contacts can help society in many different ways but it won't be cheap.

These things sound dangerous. You would get distracted driving or operating heavy machinery or what not. Besides Im with That Guy that it would be really creepy having to see people stare blankly into space looking at something on their contacts. Society would have to adjust manners and whats acceptable to things like that.

this is crazy, theres no way anyone will ever be able to buy these contacts, at least normal people, oh well, i still want them

Cole, V - 7 said...

These contacts are quite interesting, but I couldn't have something flashing across my eye every time I did something wrong.

I think prices on these contacts would be pretty high, making it impossible for some people to afford them, therefore affecting the amount of people using them.

Cheating for test with these would be alot easier.

@ Ray
"I would enjoy get information about buildings and stuff while on a tour or in some new city or something."

Thats some nice grammer there.

^^^Pun intended.^^^

I believe it would be a goodinvention but I think it would be too expensive for the average peron to buy.

wow technology really has advance...but it seems to good to be true.. I have worn contacts for 2 yrs so I would be pretty cool to try these out!

These contacts sound really cool, but it can be a hazard like others have mentioned. It would also be very annoying to have little "pop-ups" to come up every time I looked at a tree or flower that explains its history, latin name, and how much water it needs or if it's close to dying...it just seems like too much information for such a small space. This idea makes me think of an anime called Ghost in the Shell [Stand Alone Complex] where it is far in the future and beyond our advances in technology. Either way, they have something similar to this...but it's programmed into their "brain cases" and projects a hologram image of a screen that is only visible by the individual. It only appears by the will of the user...so, the contacts would be more efficient if it didn't automatically pop up.

I would personally like this invention better if it were developed as glasses...the idea of contacts (I don't have impaired vision) scares me, so glasses seem much more user friendly.

I didnt know there was so much cell phone technology. I thought that that google direction thing was cool. When i got home i tried it . If you put in a restraunt like say chick fil a it would give you the number and where it was located.

I was reading this one web site, and they made a good point about having cell phones as a thechnology at schools. They said, when they get home they pull out their cell phones and use them. Why should we make them step back in time at school. I thought that that was a good point. I had never thought of that. You could use your phone for just about anything at school. Such as notes, internet, etc.. I think we should use phones in school the more i think about it.
