Blog 3 - 9/21/09

Hello Internets! Thanks for logging in.

I thought this week we would stick with medical technology. I found this article in Readers Digest online about medical technology advances in the battlefield and how they might help us all in the future. Go read:

http://tinyurl.com/n3al24

Please do not just stop at Page 1. There are 3 pages of really amazing technological advances in battlefield medicine.

Come back on Thursday and tell us what you think about one or all of the highlighted technologies. Which ones do you think will make it into the mainstream? How do you think we will be using those in our everyday lives in the near future?

As always, you will need to advance the discussion in order to receive credit.

Talk to me . . .

1st blog, yay! Anyway the prosthetics have defeintly brought people's lives much more freedom, because they aren't in a wheelchair. The HemCon is really cool, for it slows, if not stops bleeding of a large area, it can be used for very bad wrecks and such. And we'll get more and more better inventions in the medical field, so I can't wait to see what is came up with next!

Lopez, M-1~☺ said...

I think that the HemCon Bandage will be useful. AS it is already begin used in the Army, it'll be great to be used during surgerys if non-stop bleeding occurs.

The RN624 sounds like a great idea. Unlike morphine, people get addicted too easily on it. It's better to have a pain-killer that people won't have to be stuck on.

Hey I forgot to tell yall I was *really* impressed with the comments last week. Keep 'em coming!

The HemCon Bandage would be useful ..it would cause less deaths ..nd it would get the blood to stop coming out nd get the wound sealed up in 30 seconds.
The Dog Tag nd Nuero Rescue are useful too..all of them are very useful..

Trikosko, M-1 said...

A lot of cool stuff there. The last thing seems pretty cool, you can control your limbs with thought like you did before you lost your limb. Also the HemCom bandage look like it will really catch on, its kind of strange that it is made out of something that is in shrimp shells, but who cares? Its a miracle-bandage!

Nealy,J/1 said...

I like the HemCon Bandage because it's very useful during war to stop the bleeding as fast as u can.

The RN624 on the otherhand it sounds like a good idea. But it almost sounds to good to be true. A pain blocker that can last up to several weeks sounds like a problem. They say its not addictive but someone will find some way to make it.

The Thought Controlled Prosthetics seems fun to think about something then it happens.

OMG! Kathrine Morrison, you were supposed to remind me to do the blog last week ! Arrg.

On to this weeks blog:
1)$50,000 dollars, I cant decides if that is cheap, or steep. OF course its an amazing peice of tech, but how many people just have 50k to use when they lose a leg? And does the army pay for it if you loose a limb durinng active service?

2) I know its helpful, and I know it saves a lot of lives, but if I had a head injury, im not sure I would want my head cracked open. Not that I would have much say in the matter, because I would be unconcience and my parents would have that lovely choice.

3) The HemCon "bandage" I think would be very useful, not just with military injuries, but with all injuries with excessive bleeding. They could stop a lot of people from dying in the ambulance, on the way to the emergency room, which happens more than you might think.

If I sound dead in this post, its becaue i am. Somebody reanimated my corpse and i am a zombie. I like brains ^^

I think the c-leg and mechanical prosthetic leg are two great inventions. I think that these two artificial legs would be very helpful to people who's legs had to be amputated. It would be kool to have artificial legs, so I could smoke everybody in a marathon.

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

I personally think that the prosthetics with thought control are pretty wicked. I never thought that people today would be doing anything like that. Along with the C-leg. Those prosthetics are pretty awsome. I've always imagined losing a hand and never being able to play video games again. But with these new techs, now I can! WOOHOO!!

jeffress,r-1 said...

I think these new gadgets for wounds and pain will be awesome. They could help save more lives and make someones life easier. It could give military families peace knowing there soldier has a better chance of surviving. Also the drug RN624 could make everyday life easier. The reason I say that is it would keep my mom going without her bulging disk pain and help ease my back when I move since I've had back surgery.

robinson,s-1 said...

I think this new battlefield technology is amazing. Having had a brother serve more than two years in Iraq, i believe anything that improves the safety of our troops is vital, and anything that improves the life of wounded soldiers, such as the C-leg, is revolutionary.

Morrison,K-1 said...

Monika! you don't call me by that name! and you spelt it worng. Plus, it's not my fault -_-; The HemCon , I think out of the others is one of ny favorites ^w^ and Monika....stay away from my brain! I happen to be using it right now

Goff,R-2 said...

I am enthused about the movable limbs through thought. it means that people can send electronic pulses to the nerve endings at the end of the physical limb, and cause the prosthetic to move in the way the user would want it to move.
With this type of technology developing, we are not far away from implanting electron amplifiers into people's brains with allow them to move objects through thought. AKA telekinesis. WOOT!

Hernandez, J - 2 said...

Well this blog is pretty neat all this new technology is awsome. It will also help us in the future or will it ???????? For all we now all this new technology we are creating might back fire and harm human kind but, that's just my opinion.Any who its all good Mrs. L

villanueva,f-2 said...

The Ultimate Bandage is a really great invention soldiers can get fast help and their is less risk of them dying because of the lost of blood.

Liles, T-1 said...

Some of these medical "advances" i dont see as an advance at all, such as the prosthetic leg. We've had prosthetic legs for years, even prosthetic running legs that actually allow you to run faster than a person with legs, so why is this such a big deal just cuz its shiny and smooth? On the other hand, the prosthetics with though controll is absolutely a huge leap, not only in the medical field, but in the field of science and technology. How cool is it that you can just think about moving, and the prosthetic limb will automatically read and translate your brain waves and do all of the work for you. I honestly think that is the coolest and creepiest think ive heard of all week.

Abernathy, J-2 said...

The HemCon bandage looks very interesting and useful. That would benefit many people especially those in the military. But it can also be used for other situations as well. As for the prosthetic leg that looks very beneficial as well. It's nice to know we are coming up with with medical inventions that will let us continue our everyday lives without complications.

Gonzalez, E - 2 said...

was up people, what are you guy's doing,so about the leg its good but the price is a little high so i would rather spend my life in a wheel chair adn buy my self something like a labtop and still have money to go gamble at a casino
and win more money

Parkhurst, M-2 said...

I completely support our troops so I feel that if anyone deserves this kind of technology it is them. The Neurosurgeon's procedure astounds me the most, cutting down deaths and permanent acomas. The HemCon bandage is also an amazing invention, slowing and possibly stopping profuse bleeding is something those little dinky bandaids will never be able to do. Our troops deserve the best and hopefully our scientists can keep giving it to them.

Anonymous said...

Though the technology is an amazing step forward toward improving disabilities around the world, $50,000 is very expensive. Of course, since this man lost his leg in Iraq, he was easily able to pay for it. However, if an average joe were to want to walk again after amputation, that price could be very out of reach, and they would have to buy normal prosthetics which would take a much longer time to get used to.

I like the sound of RN624. My dad had major surgery when I was young, and he got addicted to morphine. It's actually very harmful to your system if you attempt to quit the drug whether or not you are in better condition. To hear that they've managed to develop a non-addictive pain killer is very nice.

Cortines,m-2 said...

This tech really is amazing. While I would be a bit uncomfortable at first with a bandage a bandage that acts like a tire pacth, if it actually works to save lives, I'm all for it. Similarly the BMIST Star Trek-type-tricorder-thing is a great idea. With all the chaos and difficulty in keeping military medical records, the idea of being able to keep up with everything digitally is extraordinary. And as for the mega painkillers, that seems kinda dangerous, but I guess whatever works until you can get to a real hospital.

Anonymous said...

i think the hem con bandage will be a success, not only because it us used in the army but because anyone anywhere that have excessive bleeding problems can now live to see another day

Asquith,C-3 said...

the HemCon bandage is awesome...and RN624 sounds very useful.

Williams, T-3 said...

I completely agree with Mallory. Our troops fight for us everyday and they deserve the chance to fight and actually live to come home. The HemCon bandage is my favorite out of all these medical inventions. Even though I don't understand how it really works, I believe that during the war and even at home these could be very useful to us.

cortes, j - 3 said...

It's amazing what the medical field has been investing the time in. The HemCon bandage sounds like it will be a good investment, and the prostetic leg sounds cool.

Sampietro, M-3 said...

Although on last weeks blog I said that the amazing technology offered to us today troubles me a bit, I fully emrace the amazing things that come from the technology talked about in the article. I feel that people who have served our country and have been injured due to it derserve in full everything that is offered. I think that all of this technology is amazing, but I especially feel that the non-addictive pain medication, if it had been offered earlier, could have affected my life. With a father who served in Vietnam and was injured during his duty and still suffers from the injury, I have watched how addicted someone can be to their pain medication. I feel that my father's, and my, life could be better if he had been able to be more responsive and alert instead of always being doped up on so much pain medication throughout my childhood and present-day life.

reichert, s-3 said...

My dad is in the Army and has been to Afghanistan twice. He told me that he had to actually use the HemCon bandage on a man who's humvee was hit by an RPG. He said that if it werent for the HemCon that man would most likely be dead.

Wiley, C - 3 said...

i think the HemCon bandage is very useful as it is in the army, it helps the soilders move faster

Padilla, J - 3 said...

I think all the new battlefield technology can be pretty useful for not only people who have been injured during combat, but for regular people back home. I can see how the Hemcon bandage can really help with trauma victims here and at war zones, and the non-addictive pain killers will definitely help stop people from getting addicting to pain killers. All these incredible inventions will definitely benefit the way people are medically treated hopefully throughout the world.

Deckard, D-3 said...

The advancement in technology is facinationg! I took alot of interest in the C-leg because I know alot of people including me who would be devistaded if we wouldn't be able to walk again or help back from doing all of the activities we love doing. it is a very expensive product but its wirth every penny if it will let you go about with your regular life.

I like the hemcon bandage it stops bleeding in dats great for people in the army and it can help save peoples lives

Hawkins, M - 3 said...

I think the prosthetics are very unique products expecialy for people in combat because of the unordinary injuries that can occur...and me going into the service its a big deal like OMG!! what if I loose an arm...lolz not funny but seriously...I will need one of those computerized arms

Flynn,R-3 said...

The medical advancements in technology today are superb, the fact that someone can lose a limb and still go through most of their everyday routine like it was nothing- the C-leg.... Enough said

Cool thoughts!

Seth . . . it's especially cool that your dad has seen the HemCon in use.

Mia . . . I understand what you mean about supporting the medical advances for the soldiers. A lot of times new technology just seems *sparkly* but kind of superficial. This is stuff we can all support seeing tech advances in.

Keep it coming guys!

i think the artificial leg would be a good thing and it sound very cool that someone came up with this. cause i know i would not like to be in nobody wheelchair cause thats just not a good look.

The advances in technology amazes me, they can do things now that they only dreamt of doing hundreds of years ago. Some of them COULD have to negative affects if you think deep into it, but otherwise these are some of the worlds greatest technological advances.

Spruiell, S - 4 said...

Obviously, all of this technology is really revolutionary and would help more people than I can imagine, in addition to making things safer for our troops which is (or should be) very high on our nation's priority list. Since I want to be a neuro-surgeon, the segment on Neurological "rescue" really peaked my interest...Any improvement in the field of traumatic brain injuries would be very beneficial, not only to soldiers, but also to those suffering from strokes and other recurrent neurological ailments.

shepherd, a - 4 said...

ive heard a little about the prosthetic legs, but now people are making newer, more natural versions it gives amputees freedom they didn't have before the HemCon is a great idea it could really save lives but what if someone's allergic to shrimp? would the bandages affect them or would they be alright? pain relief that doesn't addict sounds like a great idea you hear about celebs who're addicted to medicine from a surgery, but now they might not have that excuse i think the more new tech we make in the medical feild, the better and easier our lives can be

Cole, S - 4 said...

I think that all the stuff their coming up with is really cool and could be really helpful.
I think my favorite thing was the bandage,,I would totally go to the store and buy a box of them if they had them.I think they are a really good thing for the Army.

I think the pain-killers would be a good thing too.Too many people get addicted to pain-killers,,But wouldnt it make it where if you got hit you couldnt feel it or would you still?
These are the questions that haunt me!!! :P (>.<)

i think that if the organic painkiller was released to the public, even by prescription, people would get funny ideas and try things that wouldn't benefit us at all. The HemCon, on the other hand, can be very useful for us, especially for those of us that are easy bleeders.

Howard, Z - 4 said...

This stuff is gonna save alot of lives. whether thier's a war or police officers get shot or for people who get in accidents etc.
The bandage really blows my mind it stops bleeding in like a minute! now thats impressive. The smart pill is also a big step up from morphine. usually when you take morphine, the chances of you dying from that wound is far more at risk and it usually goes away really quick so sometimes people will need 2 for 1 wound, but with this new pill you wont feel as much pain and your chances of living isn't decreased at all.

Miller, J - 2 said...

I really like the HemCom its really kinda futuristic, it almost if not instantly, stops the blood. I like how they are giving regular hospitals this new tech it will really save lives. That leads me to the prosthetic leg that will be usefull for weelchair bound people. the new painkiller is ASWOME!!!! I love it I mean a drug that is nonadictive and stops the pain to as much a week, cooool I have to get me some,

Jones, C - 4 said...

I'm really glad to see these things in use for our military, especially since I'm joining the Marine Corp after graduation. It's reasuring to know that there is going to be ways of soldiers being protected through technological innovations in the battlefield.

I'm looking into Infantry (I'm a Texas boy so what do you expect?) so the HemCon Bandage was definately something I was glad to see.
As for the new prosthetics I would HOPE that I would never have to have one as much as I HOPE that no other soldier would have to. But things can take sudden, horrible turns in the battle field. The new technology in these prosthetics is very impressive. In past days soldiers that lost limbs, legs especially, were conffined to wheelchairs, taking their freedom away from them. It's wonderful to know that these soldiers who suffer severe injuries like severed limbs can regain some of the freedom in their lives. I'm really hoping for the prosthetics controlled by brain waves. This sounds like something a few (just a few) years off into the future but I do hope they can bring this idea to life.
And the pain blockers are just too cool!! I would get jacked up on this stuff and go fight the biggest, toughest, meanest lookin' biker guy at any and every bar!!

All these new things are useful the bandage help help alot with holding the blood and healing the wound in 30 seconds. I think these ideas are very good.

Tate, T - 6 said...

Wow, I thought it was interesting. I liked the one about the bandages the most though. I wonder how easy it would be to get one outside of the army.. I know they were 85$ but can just anyone buy them?

Unger, B - 6 said...

I believe these new developments in medical are absolutly amazing. The HemCon would be great for car accidents and other situations. It will help keep more patients alive while they are being transported. It is definetly going to be a lifesaver.

The prosthetic leg is going to help improve people's lives. If someone had some kind of accident, using the artificial leg instead of a wheel chair will help increase mobility and self confidence. Other people would have to know they were handicapped. Being able to control them through thought is an improvement that should be placed thourougly throughout our medical systems.

I hope I never have to use any of these advances (really, really hope) but the technology is improving and making life more enjoyable for those you do use these technologies.

I see lots of people talking about how useful the HemCon patch would be on the battle field, but I think it would be pretty useful if one could buy smaller patches off the shelf, or with a prescription. I don't remember exactly what it's called or how it's spelled, but I .think. the defect that keeps blood from clotting is called hemophila (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not saying that they wouldn't have to be as careful, it's just they wouldn't have to worry so much about bleeding to death if they happened to cut themselves shaving.

As for the prosthetics controlled by thought, it reminds me a lot of the automail in the anime Full Metal Alchemist. Not the look so much, but the idea of it.

The dog tags seem like they could be really useful, but the RN624 drug seems a bit too good to be true, I think. A pain blocker that lasts that long and ISN'T addictive? What about other side effects? It just smells fishy to me. Even if it isn't addictive, I can imagine people like Gregory House taking it as often as they want so they'll never feel pain ever. That seems like it could lead to rash decisions. Maybe if it was carefully controlled and distributed, it wouldn't worry me as much.

Gonzalez, M - 6 said...

The HemCon Bandage is pretty neat if you ask me. The C-Leg is goning to be very helpful. I had gone to school with a student who had a prosthetic leg and walking around like every other person.

Out of all of these advancements for the battlefield, the HemCon bandage gets my attention the most. It's very interesting how this substance from shrimp shells can clot the blood and create a seal. This now gives the victim more time to get to help.

I can see this being used for most injuries and most likely continuing to save many lives in the future. (As it has already proven that it does)

i think that the hemcom bandages should be sold to civilians, it could be really helpful, and that pain killer would be amazing if sold in stores, no more headaches

Sydney Purser said...

All of these new inventions are very awesome, but one does worry me. I do not like the idea of the pain medication that /stops/ pain. Pain is the body's natural mechanism which shows that we are injured. Someone on this medicine could be prompted to make rash and harmful decisions, simply because they will not feel the pain that comes as a consequence, and it may also lead to the idea that they are not harmed, when in fact they are badly injured.

Cole, V - 7 said...

I think all the inventions would help.

If Mrs.L had one of those legs she would kick all of her kids and say that someone else was controlling it.

Sorry, I couldn't find anyone to correct this week.

Despite how expensive some if these medical advances may be in the present they will definately become a part of our daily lives in the future. I think that all these inventions are very awesome, but may not be affordable to everyone yet, I do think the idea of putting a patch on your arm to stop the gallons of blood from leaving your arm is cool, and the mind wave controled arms and legs are awesome too and would help a lot of people get their lives back after an accident, but until they are affordable i'll just stick with band-aids and try to not get my feet cuttoff.

And to be able to stop bleeding in under 90 seconds flat....Can't wait to see what they come out with next..

The new pain reliever takes the cake though, being able to stop pain 100% by stopping the message from going to your brain! What an awesome idea, and absolutly no addiction! w00t.

A N Y W A Y S *cough* one thing I forgot to mention, and not a lot of other people seem to be talking about- the Neuro Rescue. Wow that article is crazy!! The HemCon bandage sounds amazing for war and for civilian use. I mean before this all we had was a piece of paper with adhesive on it to try and stop bleeding. Anyway I think that through wars and such new technology that is made out of neseccity will really become a daily part of our lives in the future. I hope that these new technologies will eventually be available to the public and that the prices will drop.

I think that whole leg thing is great...but does the army pay for the leg...or does it come out of there own pocket...because that is a lot of money, not many people can afford 50000 on one C leg

Weatherford, R-3 said...

I'm really excited to kow that these things are out there, and it certainly makes me feel better about my job too. The hemcon is going be extremely useful bullet wounds and shrapnel. Though I will not be the one putting on the prosthetic leg (mainly because my plan is if they get their legs blown off, I'm going to throw a Hello Kitty Bandaid at them and tell them to walk it off), but it's still good to know that those soldiers are going to be able to live normally. And the electronic dogtags? Amazing! All of that medical info in just seconds and its going to be electronic so I won't have to carry around loads of papers. Everything on this blog is really cool and I can't wait to use them all.

Weatherford, R-3 said...

And yea, the army would pay for it in full.
