Blog 17 - 1/11/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in.

Along the lines of last week's discussion, let's talk about technology and weight loss.

Here are a few sites devoted to gadgets / technology and weight loss:

http://www.bestdietforme.com/DietTechnologyGadgets.htm

http://www.technologyevangelist.com/2007/01/5_techie_weight_loss.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/technology/personaltech/31smart.html?_r=1

http://inventorspot.com/weight_loss_for_the_lazy

and just for fun, go look at this one from the 1930's:
http://www.boingboing.net/2008/03/16/electric-bubblebaths.html

GOSH I wonder why it didn't go over? Hmmmm . . .

I don't know about yall, but I'm digging that hula chair. I could lose weight just by sitting all day! Woooohooooo! And did yall see the thing that turns the TV down when you stop peddling / exercising? I have ALWAYS said if there was a device like that more people would exercise just to power their TVs.

So pick one and give me an opinion.

Talk to me . . .

Well everything is very fasinating and such but then again not everyone is meant to excerise. Well not everyday atleast. And to be honest the whole theory on in the future how everyone is going to be fat is kind of wrong to say. Yeah the new generation of kids now a days are getting bigger but thats do to the video games and not wanting to go out and play with their friends. They just want to stay inside all day and do nothing but play video games. Yeah to me the whole to turn the volume up on the T.V. is you have to petal to keep it up is cool, but i would just watch T.V. with no sound. Some people might excerise just to keep the power on and things of sort but if they start making items of such and they turn these items into the everyday living thing they'll go out of business because no average american would want to excerise when they are trying to spend quality time with their loved one. Or when they just want to enterain the guests, or how when you get home from work or school and you just wanna relax and watch T.V. Not everyone is going to get all getty just to go home and excerise to keep the volume up or to keep the power going. That is completely insane because to much excerise can over exert the body and the people would have a nervous break down or pass out and be in the hospital or something. That whole idea is shot and they shouldn't think of items that can hurt somebody so much. Thank you!!!

I really like the Calorie Counter application for the iPhone and BalckBerry. One of my friends uses this daily and I believe its very useful. With our generation, a cell phone is something everyone has. So..in that sense there is no excuse to keep track of calories. This program has all sorts of food programmed in and once you tell it what you ate, it keeps track of your calories for the day.

Weatherford, R-3 said...

The stuff that looks cool is blocked... like the electric bubble bath?? What's up with that? I want to see! Also, I'd like to take a look at the weight loss for the lazy, what's all on there?

Sampietro, M-3 said...

I like the idea about the thing that turns the TV down when you stop exercising too, Mrs. Lanham! That's a cool idea and I think it would make a whole lot more unwilling poeple who want to lose weight get going..."Man, shoot I gotta turn up the TV. I gotta finish watching King of the Hill! Start pedaling Chuck!!!" Yeah, I'm not hick, but I would knock myself out exercising if it meant I would be able to watch Glee or The Office. On the other hand, being overweight is a disease and no matter how much money one spends on the latest gadgets, there's still the chance that they'll keep it up for a day, a week, but stop eventually. When you rely on a gadget to help you exercise, you never build up the willingness to do it yourself, ya know? There's this great thing called walking...you can get in shape, lose a ton of weight, and it doesn't cost you anything...but maybe I'm just going off like this to justify my not-exercisingness...

Morones, C - 4 said...

exercise to watch Tv!?! i better get the hamster on that treadmill with me in the background yelling, "RUN SPARKY, DO IT IF YOU LOVE DADDY!" but it better be a heck of a good show if i'am forcing my poor baby to run to death! i don't even own a hamster XP! i guess thats all folks!>vv<

Spruiell, S - 4 said...

While its kind of cool that they invented something that gives people an incentive to work out (the thing that turns up the volume on the television as you pedal and turns it down as your pedalling slows), I forsee lots of issues accompanying this. For one, people shouldn't have to rely on technology to work out and stay in shape. I understand that we're moving more and more towards total dependence on machinery that was never required for simple tasks before, but in my opinion, working out is one thing that should remain untainted by technology. As people become more and more dependent on technology, the obesity rate also rises; the negative trend is obvious. I think machinery like the television volume/workout control demonstrate a complete lack of self-motivation and show exactly how lazy our society is getting. Working out is a pure form of stress release and should remain that way, untouched by the often harmful effects of dependence on expensive gadgets and technologically advanced machinery.

Okay, I read about the weight loss trackers that are downloadable onto your phone. This could be really handy when you want to give up your diet (it lets you see how much youve accomplished giving you the extra will to not give up). The technology sounds really good on the "Lose It!" program. It lets you choose from different amounts of calorires depending on where you meal came from.

I also found it sad that a lot of the sites were blocked :(

Small,K-6 said...

I didn't like the sound of the iPhone apps that counted calories. From what I gathered, it requires entering in what foods you're going to eat, or how many calories you intend to take in daily. Seems like a good idea, but I can imagine quite a bit of 'diet cheating' going on.

As for the television that's powered by excersise, I think I'll stick to the lazy-person approved version. I'm not exactly on top of working out- I don't really care about my weight, I'm not trying to impress anyone, I enjoy eating what I like to eat. I'm happy to be blessed with a fast metabolism.

bushiey, k - 4 said...

I think that the technology is cool in all but i think they should use there time trying to do something more productive instead of trying to make people exercise more. Even though the idea sounds cool, it could result in someone wanting to watch t.v. but they don't want to work out so they get someone else to do it instead, which i think is really lazy and dumb :)

lyles,m-6 said...

you know,i just got an iPhone, and all the apps i have,i dont really need.but i've been ready to start losing weight, and i havent really had a way to track down how much i eat, what time, and all that other stuff. The LoseIt! app is perfect for that.I think that it could really help.Im definately going to get it,right now.lol,jk.when i get home.(: i hope it helps.

Padilla, E - 6 said...

i think the GPS thing is pretty cool.it shows how fast your heart is pumping when you work out. and you dont want to train harder than what you really should... what's really cool is that it shows you your pace in real time and shows you the path you ran on a Google map...The Loseit app sounds awesome too but not everyone has an ipod. but it still sounds great :)...

Jim Taylor said...

I think that the only way any of this will work is if people are willing to do the work necessary to accomplish it. You can buy the app, but nothing is making you use it.

Sydney Purser said...

Ah, dieting. It seems fitting that this comes on the heels of New Years Resolutions. Anyways, I think the Lose It program was kinda neat. I personally don't think I have the attention span to continually log in what I eat, but I suppose for those who are more serious about losing weight than I am, it is a very useful tool

Cole, V - 7 said...

"And did yall see the thing that turns the TV down when you stop peddling / exercising? I have ALWAYS said if there was a device like that more people would exercise just to power their TVs."

I'm thinking kind of what Jim said. If I had to do that much work just to watch TV...I'd probably just stop watching TV. Or find a way to do it on the computer.

And seeing as how NISD decided to block two of the links that you have provided for us. I'm guessing 7th period doesn't get to see the chair or the 1030's thing.

Clark,A-7 said...

what is stopping lazy people from turning off the app if they dont wanna exercise? other than that they are so lazy that they will not get up and turn it off themselves... what we need is a system that rewards the people with small bits of food after they complete a certain amount of exercise. it can be like a lock system on the frigde.

Chalco, N - 7 said...

I would like to use the "lose it!" app. it seems like it can help you alot, thats if you dont lie puting how much calories you had or so on.If i had an iphone i would totaly upload it, and hopefuly see results later on

Morrison,K-1 said...

I noticed that a few things require a PC to see your results like the DashTrak. Well, don't tell me it's not true because I know people who do not own a computer. So what's the point in getting something that you need to go and spend a lot of money on? I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on diet technology. Maybe I'm just trying to defend the lazy people *cough*me*cough* But yeah, that's basically all I have to say.

Brookshire, B-1 said...

I like the Run Fat Boy personal training site. This idea really cracked me upXD,but it could accualy be a very handy site to keep track of your weight loss or how fit you are.

jeffress,r-1 said...

Wow who would use a weight loss program that costs $150 like MyFoodPhone. Also it only allows you to send a photo of your meal to a site. But $19.95 sounds better from the South Beach Diet OnHand that allows you to look up ingredients and food on a celly!! The CalorieKing site is awesome because you can look up the calories in any food, brand or restaurant that sells it.

villanueva, manuel, N. 1 said...

There is a lot of cool stuff on these web sites....but the one I think is really crazy is the one website that has that thing for you to peddle to turn the volume up on the tv...I guess lazy people would have a incentive to work out now

mayfield,s-1 said...

The calorie counter for the ipod is a good way for people to lose weight if they really wanted to, and the workout application on the ipod touch is a helpful way for people to lose weight, if they put their effort in it.

Trikosko, M-1 said...

Putting a calorie counter on the phones is a good idea. Most people always have their phones of them so it is like always keeping a notepad on you, but easier. Things don't always need a complex solution, this will work for some people.

Baker,M-1 said...

Personally i think all the high tech weight loss stuff is junk. Wieght loss coms down tou 2 things: How much u consume, and how many calories you burn. Simple. ...Right?

Moving on.

The 5 Techie weight loss tools is pretty cool, although i cant tell if they are being stereotypical or not. I think number 3: Run Fat Boy would probably be the most helpful because its self paced, but then again there are a lot of people who cant be self paced....so i guess it depends on the tpe of person you are.

Patton,A-1 said...

i think the myfoodphone is kinda lame because i dont want someone giving me advice on what to eat. if i wanted to lose weight i would be able to kno what to eat and what not to eat. i dont need some guy who thinks he knows how to eat tellin me about my food habits

Lopez, M-1~☺ said...

To me, all this new stuff about losing weight never works. People these days, don't bother noticing what they eat or how many calories they're food contains. Diet tips usually NEVER work for people. But I love the idea of that Run Fat Boy site. It should get people moving. Ah~ Crazy people with all the new techy things.

Nealy,J/1 said...

WOW CHARNAE GREAT COMMENT!!!

WELL ALL THE ITEMS WERE GREAT BUT I LIKE THE >>RUN FAT BOY<< ITS A WEB BASED SELF PACE PERSONAL TRAINING SITE. AFTER EACH WORKOUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TYPE IN THE INFORMATION AND YOU EVEN HAVE THE OPTION OF SAY RATHER IT WAS EASY OR HARD IT GIVES YOU RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR NEXT WORKOUT... THIS WOULD BE GREAT IN A WAY FOR PPL THAT LIKE TO SEE IMMEDIATE RESULTS AND CANT SEE THEM BUT YOU CAN SEE THEM ON THE WEBSITE SO I THINK THE IDEA OF >>RUN FAT BOY<< IS GREAT!!!

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

yeah, I've seen that hula chair on G4 and it was very amusing. Also, all these bunch of apps that are offered seem like they are getting old for me. I mean really, they all seem to do about the same thing, just one is cheaper than the other or one has a different method of doing it like the South Beach Diet which is only 19.95 compared to the MyFoodPhone which is a whopping 150 bucks. Really!? Plus MyFoodPhone relies on you taking pictures of your food and sending it. What if you have a nice warm soup and you take a picture. How long would you have to wait to get the results and how would they be able to determine what you are eating if its a homemade recipe.

Culbertson, D-1 said...

Loseit! From FitNow looks interesting, since I never put my phone down since I got it(Not at school though I promise :D), it would be a way to keep track of everything I eat, and I believe it also tells you what to eat O_o....Controlll issuuuuuues..

I can see it being a hassle to look at the....Apple....Turkey Sandwich....And think, "Wow, cheezbrgar plx." But oh well, all for the sake of dropping a few pounds eh? XD

robinson,s-1 said...

I thought the service MyFoodPhone, where one can take a picture of meals and send it to a website and recive diet suggestions from dietitians, was pretty cool and could be useful to people looking to lose weight. But in all honesty, i agree with Sydnee. These days people rely on technology so much that they cant go take a walk unless thats what your phone says is the right thing to do, or you cant order a salad unless the dietitian from a fancy website suggests it. Dont get me wrong, i love junk food as much as the next person, but i dont need my iphone to tell me when i need to go excerise.

Lanham said...

LOL @ Cristoban. Best quote of the week . . . "RUN SPARKY, DO IT IF YOU LOVE DADDY!"

Kati . . . I understand what you mean about the "diet cheating" but what's the point? If you're the only one looking at the calories and you're the one who benefits (or doesn't as the case may be) from the work of putting in the calories, then that would just be a waste of time.

Miranda . . .thanks for waiting until you got home to download the app. LOL

Jim . . . exactly.

Brandon . . . the Run Fat Boy site is pretty cool. I liked it. The guy will actually design a workout regime for you.

Monika . . . for me the point of weight loss tech (for me at least) is that it makes it easier to know exactly how many calories you've consumed / burned. I use a HRM when I run. I know when I'm finished EXACTLY how much energy I've used, so I can be more honest about what I need to consume.

I dig the MyFoodPhone idea too, but wonder how long it takes to get an answer back. This is why I do Weight Watchers, so I don't HAVE to count calories. That's a whippin'.

Abernathy, J-2 said...

Ok so i always say im going to go on a diet but i say i'll start monday and thats about every sunday that i say that...doesn't exactly work out. But i think the app for the iphone is pretty neat(although i don't have an iphone). If i could keep up with something like an app then i may be able to do it but going off my own motivation definately doesn't work. Also, the fat boy website exercise thing looks useful. I wouldn't mind someone ttelling me what workouts would be of benefit for me.

Goff,R-2 said...

when i go to work out at SFA, i see alot of the machines with televisions attached to them. Are people really so lazy that the only way they will excercise is if they have a television to watch so they dont have to be fully engaged in their work out?

The idea of a television that turns the volume down as you stop working out is a great idea. i mean if you are going to be so lazy that you absolutly have to watch tv when you work out, then you might as well make the cocept work for you.

If people have to work out and excercise to power the televisions sound, then alot of people will really start to work out. Some people have certain shows they like to watch, others have to have something to get their mind off of the work out because it makes them less tired. either way i think that this concept it very ingenius. whoever came up with it must like to watch tv while they excersice, but often find themselves not working out as much as they would like.

Parkhurst, M-2 said...

I think the Dashtrak is pretty nifty, its a way for us to believe that those sticks they call models are aware of their health...crazy I know. This gadget is worn under clothing around the waist and measures heart beat, calories burned, etc. and can be downloaded onto a computer website for further analysis. Pretty wierd to think that those girls have to work for their image...but toys like this make it a lot easier for them! :)

villanueva,f-2 said...

Lose It from FitNow is a really cool application on the Iphone, its a calorie counter and weight tracker i think that it helps people who are trying to lose weight and it sets a budget for your calorie intake and helps keeps track of ur weight.

gonzalez, c-2 said...

i think people should be happy with what they look like. and yeah its cool to try and change ones looks but thats hust my opinion.
i think Weight Watchers is important for people who try to be healthy but really i dont think that peopleneed it as much as they think they do. im happy for the people who try to lose weight or wacth their weight. me i really dont care i eat what i want and i just dont care but im still healthy so yeah.

Hernandez, J - 2 said...

I was quite impressed with these new weight loss technology gadgets.I hope some time in the future they will have something that can keep you fit and ripped for the rest of your life. that would be so (nifty) I dnt know if I spelled this word correctly oh well LOL

Cortines,m-2 said...

huh. I think it's pretty sad that we feel like we have to have all these different technologies to lose weight, but I guess it's good that people are at least concerned enough to come up with them. I feel like the most effective are the pedal TV and the iPhone and BlackBerry services.
I think, though, that it would be even better if the television just went completely off when you stop pedalling, but whatever works! The apps and services for phones and PDAs are great for encouragement and some tools (like calorie counters and stuff) but the individual is really the one who sould be doing the work. If you're not motivated and dedicated, your technology is useless.

Szu-yung said...

I think The Fat Boy Run site will be a great way to loose weight. :P

anderson a-2 said...

Ok i was looking at the hi-tech watches and things and it was interesting to read about all the things they can do like measure your heart rate and tell you about the number of calories you have burned. Then i say the 5 techie weight lost tools and it was a website like "Run Fat Boy" the name is what got my attention but besides that it is a self paced weight lost websight and it is Umm... ok it basically just lets you keep track of what your suppose to be doning to lose weight. And then here comes iPhone with another app. for tracking weight loss i new it was a matter of time but i had no idea it was goin to be like this i just wounder will people actually lose anything while using it????

brooks.hobie said...

really if some one is lazy enuff to let an app do all of the work what does that say about them in the first place.

Deckard, D-3 said...

maybe with these new developements we will have less obesity in the world. people will eat healthier therefore hopefully anding to the live and the life expectance will inprove as well.

Hawkins, M - 3 said...

I like the applications on the phones because its an easy way to keep up, but some people are not going to add every little calorie they consume so most of the time the counter is going to be inaccurate...

reichert, s-3 said...

I think it's interesting to see how far this technology has come, and how crazy some of it is. Some of it seems practical and usefull like the couch potato to 10k app for the iphone, and others seem completley crazy!

Padilla, J - 3 said...

All the different weight loss applications seem like a good idea as long as they are used properly. They help keep you on your diet by showing how much food you are eating, but it kind of sad that we have to rely on a piece of technology for support and motivation to lose weight. I think it would be healthier if people were supported by actual human beings to lose weight instead of a robot telling you that "good job!"

Wiley, C - 3 said...

I dont like myfoodphone because i dont like the fact that somone is giving advice on what i need to eat. i think i know what to eat if im trying ti lose weight.

zavala,P -3 said...

i think that the GPS heart rate monitor could be useful in a diet. you can actualy see how hard your working or exercising. But what i really think is that the only way that one can lose weight is if one is determeni to it.

in order for it to work u have to be willing to do the work. but i think the calorie counter is kool for the i-phone its really neat because every one has a cell phone.but just because u have a phone i know not every one is going to excerise

i think the only way to lose weight is the old fashioned way excersize, you dont need all the stuff for your phone to tell you that you need to go run a few miles

I like the idea of the iphone app that counts your calories for you, but it doesn't make you stay faithful to your diet, just because you have the app doesn't mean you will use it properly.

i love the idea of phone apps for fitness because no one can be a minute away from theirs (ask my sister) and you can get fit using the phone to track your progress and give you an easy and non-boring way to get fit.

i think if someone wants to loose wait then they should set a goal. i would stick with running to loose weight. its healthier and helpful for the rest of your body.

Howard, Z - 4 said...

I realy like the sport watches they are coming out with but they are a little bit expensive. prices range around $300 to $370 but they are pritty nifty telling you how many miles youve ran, counts how many calories youve burned, your heart beat per minute, and they can be used for track, biking, and even some cases swimming. but dont look forward to me wearing one. i will take my 300 bucks else where.

Many people are purchasing the ipone daily and use it in almost every aspect of life. New apps, including the Lostit! app and calorie counter, allows people to keep a track of their daily intake of food and drinks. Although some say that just walking would be sufficient to lose weight, they might try and do more if their calorie intake was high. There is no way that a person who eats say over 2000 calories a day and walks maybe a mile or two is going to see any results. This new app allows people to manage and organize a healthier lifestyle.

It seems to me that ths stuff I was available to veiw was all apps on phones to help keep track of what you are eating and exercise. They were just reminders really and not something to do. With these you would really just have to push yourself the most to get up and do the excersising required. So its up to you to do it just not to keep track.

"Run Fat Boy" is a kinda harsh way to put it, but i guess it gets the job done.
