Blog 21 - 2/8/10

Hola Peeps!

So this week I'd like to explore how Apple introduces products to an unsuspecting marketplace. Have you ever noticed that we don't even KNOW we need the stuff until it starts hitting the market and then we get all jealous and . . . covetous? Is that even a word?

Look at these links. Pay particular attention to the stories about how they sold Cingular (AT&T) on letting them develop the iphone. It's interesting, really. Do not stop on page 1 of the stories, particularly the Wired story.

Log in and answer ONE of these questions. You MUST get the answer correct to receive credit. Please be aware if you copy somebodies answer and it's wrong, neither of you will be receiving credit.

1. What is Apple’s trump card?

2. Name one of the support headaches that occurred when the iphone hit the market.

3 Name one of the other companies Mr. Jobs reached out to while still in negotiations with AT&T (which was named Cingular at the time, meaning that Cingular is NOT the answer to this question).

4. Approximately how many people had seen the iPhone by the times Jobs announced it at Macworld in 2007?

5. What company did Jobs approach in order to build a phone that could bypass the carriers?

6. According to BusinessWorld, why are Apple design details impossible to get?

7. How many hours of negotiation did it take to finalize the deal between Apple and AT&T?

There were only about 210-220 people who had actually seen it.

What is Apple’s trump card?
The outsourced design manufacturers don't have the world-class industrial design, the style, or the ability to make easy-to-use software or the ability to integrate it all. Either way, the other manufactures can't get their hands on Apples designs at all.

The precise details are hard to get, because Apple treats its product-development processes like state secrets. They put black draps around the production lines at the factories of the contract manufacturers it hires to assemble its products. Some of their projects were only worked on during the midnight shift, because of fewer "prying Eyes".

Name one of the support headaches that occurred when the iphone hit the market. there were many problesm w/ the iphone when it came out "The phone dropped calls constantly, the battery stopped charging before it was full, data and applications routinely became corrupted and unusable" that all, nothing serious. but then it came back to life and it worked better than any other smart phone.

6. Why are apple designs impossible to get?

Businessweek stated that apple desigs are hard to get because apple treats its secrets like state secrets. They line the production line with black drapes and keep everything covered by sheets. They also only assemble on the midnight shift to make sure less praying eyes can see it.

"What's the secret? The precise details are almost impossible to get, because Apple treats its product-development processes like state secrets -- going so far as to string black drapes around the production lines at the factories of the contract manufacturers it hires to assemble its products. In one case, says a source who once worked on an Apple project, the outfit even insisted that its wares be built only on the midnight shift, when fewer prying eyes might be around."

Question 1--
The trump card is Apple making most of its own software from the Mac operating system to applications such as iPhoto and iTunes.

In response to question number 6, Apple's design details are almost impossible to get, because (very much like Willy Wonka) they keep their product-development processes a secret. Businessweek says they go so far as to "string black drapes around the production lines at the factories of the contract manufacturers it hires to assemble its products." I guess it's worth it...but that's kinda creepy. Before we know it, Steve Jobs will be super pale and portrayed by Johnny Depp. (Not that that's a bad thing...)

2. Name one of the support headaches that occurred when the iphone hit the market.

Question #2

According to the article on wired.com, when the iPhone was first introduced its imperfections included the fact that it ran on AT&T's "poky" network, it could not record video or perform email searches, and it could not run Java or Flash programs. These imperfections were overlooked, of course by the fact that the phone was so "overwhelming."

The servers were temporarily overwhelmed by the massive numbers of activations.

"Activation is another issue. From what I've read, some people had a hard time activating their iPhones because the servers (whether at Apple or AT&T) were temporarily overwhelmed. Had Apple sold twice as many iPhones, that would have turned into a disaster."

Name one of the other companies Mr. Jobs reached out to while still in negotiations with AT&T.

Jobs first went to VZW with the iPhone, intending to get them to sell it exclusively, and not AT&T.
VZW basically laughed in his face and said gtho nub.
The reason for this was because Apple wanted full control, customers would have to go through Apple, and not VZW when they needed to replace their phone, basically being without a device for a crazy long time.
AT&T was there next go around, AT&T agreed and sold about 4-5 million iPhones I believe, VZW proceeded to kick themselves, but now they are recovering with knock offs.
The problem with the iPhone is that AT&T has very little say with it, since Apple is in control, you can't even get Wireless Insurance for them, Apple is kinda greedy but I have to say, their products rawk.(Excluding the Mac, ick..)
