Blog 14 - 12/6/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

Before we get started, allow me to just say . . . COME ON CHRISTMAS BREAK!!! I know you guys are as tired as I am.

Continuing our discussion of kitchen innovation, this week I have two videos. The first one is made like the lady is from the 50's, but she's really not. It's from a company called Lutron, and everything you see in that video is in existence right now. Also? Most of it can now be done from applications for your phone, which we will talk more about in the future. The funny thing to me about this video is that even though she's showcasing all this kitchen control stuff, if you pay close attention you'll see that see's using a real retro hand mixer like your great-grandmother used to use. That cracked me up.

The second video is called Living Tomorrow and it's about data integration in our future kitchens. To my knowledge this stuff is not in production, but will be very soon. The kitchen that's showcased in this video is a smart kitchen. It know how much water we're using, how much electricity we're using, etc. The guy also talks about embedded RFID chips in our food packaging that lets the oven know how long to cook the product.

Essentially, what these videos tell us is that the kitchens of the very near future will have lots of video screens. These kitchen designers have obviously never seen me cook. I end up with stuff everywhere . . . heck this weekend I ended up with salsa verde on my toe. All I'm saying is I hope those screens clean easily.

So my questions this week are:

1) How much data integration does your kitchen have now? Does the cook in your house have their recipes stored electronically? Or are you guys still old school written stuff?
2) Does the cook in your house ever watch video of somebody cooking something and cook along with them at the same time?
3) Do you think they WOULD do that if it were easier to access the video . . . say . . . like the monitor was built into the counter?

Answer all three questions to receive credit this week.

AS ALWAYS, UNLESS WE ARE LOOKING AT YANKO YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THURSDAY TO BLOG!

Talk to me . . .

1) In our household, we still have a bunch of old-school written recipe stuff. BUT I also have a bunch of stuff filed on the computer. I frequently use the laptop in the kitchen. As is evidenced by the cut in my laptop screen from a knife accident.

2) Yes I have cooked while watching a demonstration video.

3) I would definitely do that more if it were more accessible.

1. Well sometimes i use my ipod for recepies and stuff but most of it my mom already knows my memory and she just tells me what i need and stuff. And ocasionally we do use hand writen or recepies from a book.
2. I have never cooked from watching the food channel or anything of that matter. I am never ready on time and even if i paused it I would never have all hte ingridents.
3. I think I would follow allong more or tried to if i had a screen made especially for that purpose.

1.) well all of us cook in our house. my mom, my dad, erika, and me. we don't really have anything electronical in the kitchen. all of our stuffis written down somewhere or we have it memorized.
2.) Actually, no. neither of us watch and cook. we just cook, and come up with ideas as we cook. like we'll be cooking some shrimp and we'll add some stuff in it that'll just make it taste good.
3.)yes, i'm pretty sure that is all that we'd be doing. watching and cooking.

1) in my house, we have this one really old recipe book. It has everything from bean dip to fried zucinni. everything we cook out of it delicous. but we usually just use our laptop in the kitchen its quick and all of our fav recipes are saved on it.

2)I dont think anyone has cooked while watching a demonstration video. lol we are all to clumsy!

3)Yeah if it were more accessible i think we would do it more often.

My kitchen has no data integration or whatever that is. The cook at my house is me or my mom, and we usually follow our recipes by memory.

We never watch people on tv make food and try to copy them but it sounds fun if the chief is willing.

I think if the monitor was built into the counter we would spend more time watching tv more than looking up recipes, but yea, it would be alot easier.

Does the cook in your house have their recipes stored electronically? No my grandmother know her recipes and she doesn't use computers.

Or are you guys still old school written stuff? no writen stuff my grandmother knows her stuff.

I might cook while watching a demonstration video if i have nothing else to do.

I might do it more if there were no video games on the monitors cuz if there is i'll just play video games while eating.

1) In my family we rearly use recipes at all. but if they are ever looked at or referenced they are usualy old written ones.

2)My mom would watch the cooking channle then go cook what they made, but i there is no tv in the kitchen.

3) I definitely doubt that we would use it more.

1)We dont have any computers in our kitchen to help us with our cooking , we'll usually just a print a recipe from online or get a cook book.

2)No we don't cook using a demonstration video.

3)Yes i would love to have a montior in my kitchen to aid with cooking.

1.in ma house its all old school except for when my madre screems that she wants a new recepi of the computer so there we have to use lap top...but other than that we all old school..
2.No i belive if we do that we gonna mess it all up then start all over again..hahaha n thats not good..
3.Yeah i would use it just to watch tv while im cooking but i wudnt pay attention to the dude or dudeete talking!!!!

1)In my house, we have zero high tech technology. But my mom does look up recipes on the internet.

2)No I don't think my dad has ever cooked while watching television. He's too stubborn to follow a recipe properly.

3)I think if my mom had a television explaining things step by step she would definitely use it more.

1) we pretty much have the standard kitchen, the cook in my house (mom) has the recipes memorized, but also goes online to get some recipes. Thats about the most advanced things we have in there.
2)No, the cook in my house has never wathced and cooked simultaneously.
3)If it were easier to access the video, then Yes my mom would definately do it....I would even do it!

Nope, our kitchen has no sort of electronical equipment in it to store recipes. We are still old school.. the cook does not watch any sort of cooking shows at all, while cooking.. and, no the cook would not like any sort of electric devices to aid them in cooking like a monitor in the counter.. we are very old school, with the recipes in our head and sometimes go to recipe books xD////
but, if it were me, i would definitly have those things.. i think i would need it very much so..

2)Well, my mom loves to watch cooking shows but she doesn't cook along with them.

3)She would probably love that, having a monitor in the counter for super easy accessibility.

To Much Technology For One Kitchen... i imagine that it would eventually confuse someone to the point of no return.

At my house there is no such thing as data integration in the kitchen... you want it, go buy it and cook it simple as that there is no electronic data base full of recipies.

There Is No Tv In The KITCHEN!! IJS...
so watchin the food network channel and cooking at the same time it out of the question.

1) In our household, our kitchen is a pretty basic kitchen, stove, sink, microwave, and all that good stuff. My mom uses her memory and the internet to cook.

2) No, my mom has not watched a cooking show and cooked breakfast/lunch/dinner at the same time.

3) If it were easier to access the video in the cooking area, then yes, my mom would use it daily!

How much data integration does your kitchen have now? Does the cook in your house have their recipes stored electronically? Or are you guys still old school written stuff? As far as technology goes, our kitchen has no 'special' data integration systems; recipes are written down or found in books.

Does the cook in your house ever watch video of somebody cooking something and cook along with them at the same time? Watching somebody cook - yes (Food Network) but no cooking along with them at the same time.

Do you think they WOULD do that if it were easier to access the video . . . say . . . like the monitor was built into the counter?
If we had a built in monitor in one of our appliances my parents would definitely use it to cook along with and get instructions - it would make cooking more time-efficient and possibly more enjoyable.

1)Who writes recipes down anymore? If you're a really good cook, you can remember the recipe easily.
2)Only a fool would try that. What if while you're watching, you miss something and you have to start over? And what if you tried to start over when the food was halfway cooked?!
3)Only old people and noobs have time to learn how to cook a dish. If you don't know it, don't try it!

I do not think that we have anything like this in our kitchen. We just use "old school" recipes, not anything that is stored electronically. I do not think that my Mom or Dad would use anything like this, just because they have done it the old way for so long. BUT I would love to have the chance to work with this kind of technology in a kitchen.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
1) In my houshold, my mother is the cook, and they still use the old hungarian recipe book, its pretty fancy and nice but they never upgraded to electronic memory.

2) No i never watch it, and my mom watches it occasionally, but she never cooks along side it.

3) even if it were easier to do so, i still dont think she would, cause now a days we just pop somthing in the microwave and be done with it.

young, j - 4 said...

1) I'm pretty sure we still have cookbooks lying around. We dont really care enough to have the recipes stored electronically.

2) No, she (my stepmom) just uses a cookbook, or by memory, whatever floats her boat.

3) It's a possibility. I mean, i'm not inside her head or anything, but she does have an iPhone which has this capability, even though i've never seen her attempt it.

2)My mom has never cooked while watchin a cook show she pretty much watches cooking shows but he writes down the recipes and then goes and cooks it

3) I think my mom would still use her old journal cause my mom isnt that good with technology so it may not be so easy for her

1)Our kitchen is pretty average. It has a stove, fridge, and a microwave. Nothing fancy or data integrated. My mom usually has the recipes she cook memorized. As long as she has the ingredients, then she can cook it. Measurements aren't important.

2)My mom sometimes watch the food channel. But she usually likes to just follow a written recipe if shes cooking something new.

3)She would most likely do it more often if it was avaiable more easily in the kitchen.

1)At our house my mom still has recipes written down all the way for 1980 so wel have a ton of recipes written down

2) Yes my mom is always watching the cooking channel and writing down recipes all the time.

3) Yes but my mom wouldnt even know how to turn on the monitor so if i set it up for her then she probly would.

1) we use written out recipes or so it by memory in the kitchen.

1) We reallly dont use a recepie book at my house they mainly do what they allready know what to do. Once in awhile we do use one it would be nice to have one allready stored one in your kitchen.
2) That has never happen at my house the only way that would even be close to happen if they watch something on tv and decide to write down so they later make it.
3)If we would have the oppurtunity given that them a lot of people would take advange of cuz i know i would it would make my cooking better. You just get a better idea of doing when see beeing done.

2) I don't believe what those chef people say on the TV. They are either lying or just wrong.

3) I still wouldn't watch them even if it was more accessible.

2) Does the cook in your house ever watch video of somebody cooking something and cook along with them at the same time?
Ok my mom cooks in the house and she has never used a video before while she is cooking, all the things my mom and dad use come out of cook books, memorized or old family recpies. I don't know if a video would actually help or not. I think they do just fine reading it off a piece of paper.

:Our kitchen doesn't have nothing fancy it just have the basic things. Our cook does it prety much the old fashion way.

2) Does the cook in your house ever watch video of somebody cooking something and cook along with them at the same time?
:No. Our cook i guess just invents the recipe as she goes.

3) Do you think they WOULD do that if it were easier to access the video . . . say . . . like the monitor was built into the counter?
:Yes. Probably she would so she can learn new stuff as she goes, and specially if it's a professional you'r watching.

1. at my house my mom doesnt find it very convenient to have stuff written down because shes not very organized to begin with. in fact my mom doesnt even like to cook if she could she would take us out to eat EVERY day! ha! when she does cook however she goes by memory and sometimes even experiments with what she has. when she cooks something new its either dictated to her or they show her.
2. we've never watched and cooked at the same time. we either watch the food network or cook.
3.i really doubt my mom would use the built in screen because she would still have to look for what she wants, again not very convenient for her.

Thompson, C - 5 said...

1. The onlything "new age" in our kitchen is the non gas hot pads and our two microwaves. EVERY recipe my mom owned is on paper stuffed in a huge cook book, all unorganized and bleh.

3.Not really, my mom is pretty technologicaly inable. shes pretty old school when it comes to cooking.

1) Well, considering how our house is under current renovations, that would be a no. When my aunt and uncle cook a new dish, they like to google it and print out recipes. I, on the otherhand, cook by memory or make my own dishes.

2) Haha, well you see here... my aunt and uncle don't beleive in television, so no. My uncle sometimes watches Youtube videos, but he never cooks and watches them at the same time.

3) Hmm, probably not. We all like it simple. I don't really want to cook with my counter talking to me, just saying. It might work for some people, but I doubt it'd work for my family.

i know for a fact that my family couldnt handle this kind of technology in the kitchen. They would flip out. I, along with the fam, am old school. Why would you have a grocery list on the screen and download it onto your phone? When it would be just as easy to write it. I dont know. I wouldnt be able to cook while watching a demonstration video. I would end up mixing the sugar with salt and the flour with baking soda. lol I wouldnt be a pretty sight.

My kitchen's completely old-school: every recipe we have is on paper, and some cookbooks we have are from generations ago. No technology goes anywhere near the kitchen, especially not computers; paper can survive better than a Macbook when it comes to getting messed up by ingredients/kitchen appliances. Even if the screens were built right into the counter, cookbooks are simple to follow, and the screens would require way too much maintenance to keep them clean.

So,
1. We have very few data integration at my house and i mean very little, the most advanced thing we have is a dishwasher which saves my butt from doing the dishes :P My mom is old school and has recipes stored in old church books and what not.
2. My mom is the type of person to watch the cooking shows and write down the recipes then later on cook the meal or she goes online and will look up the recipe and directions.
3. Well, my mother might be able to do that but, she isnt that great at multitasking and neither am I so probably not unless they have an app for that.

2. Nah, my mom usually just reads the recipe and goes from there.
3. I think they'd do anything like that, regardless of whether or not it made anything easier. I'd end up getting food all over my counter screen, so eventually it'd just be a counter.

2)My mom doesnt sit in front of the tv and watch it no, but she may write it down real fast for later use.

Plus as cool as cooking shows are, that would be so difficult unless you had DVR so you could do it because those people off tv are professionals so they are beasts at what they do, duhhhh! We just print the junk out or do it from memory. That's how the Mastali's are.

3) Possibly, but I am pretty certain some people wouldn't do that just because it can get so messy sometimes and who knows how protective some of the electronics can be? Nobody wants a fire in the house or to mess up some type of REALLY expensive, new piece of technology...just sayin'

1) in our house, we cook almost all our food from old recipes. We don't file any recipes on computers.

2) We don't cook while watching a demonstration.

3)If there was a monitor built into the counter, I would probably watch TV instead of demonstration videos, since i already know how to cook.

1. I think the most high tech recipes in my house are printed recipies in cook books. We have some old school written ones too but no spiffy computer recipies.
2. No one in my family has every cooked with the help of anyone online of on a tv show. It just never happens
3. I think the only time i would use a cooking video is to explain what a word in the recipy means (like if i didn't know how to sift or something). Other wise, recipies are so straight forward i dont think i would need help (not braggin just sayin)

1. All of the recipes will be stored electronically, having a touch screen integrated in the counter or having a compter screen to where he could select which recipe he would like to use.

2. My cook will watch the video while cooking at the same time.

3. Yes, it'll be a lot easier if the screen would be intergrated in the counter so it will be easier to see than looking across in the living room and you could hardely see it.

1) In our house we dont have any type of receipes we have from the computer, we just have receipes that know from the top of our heads
2) My mama or grandma never watch anyone cook anything tv wise we just watch our parents cook the meal.
3) It would be easier but i like my family's cooking; and it besides we dont have enough cash to get that type of technology

At my haus unfortunayelly I cook because my mother doesnt know how to except for a few recipies that were passed down from generation to generation but i can still cook them better if we had a kitchen cooking battle.....back on subject. Based on what we have in the pantry or in the fridge I just cook with whats there and well if theres nothing there then guess whos not eating tonight? And if I get food poisoning its my own fault so anyway we dont write down recipies or watch shows because im too slow to follow them so I just wing it all the time.

1)How much data integration does your kitchen have now? Does the cook in your house have their recipes stored electronically? Or are you guys still old school written stuff? Old school or memorized. Some we do look up online if we just can't remember the ingredients in the recipe.
2) Does the cook in your house ever watch video of somebody cooking something and cook along with them at the same time? Nope.
3) Do you think they WOULD do that if it were easier to access the video . . . say . . . like the monitor was built into the counter?
I know i would.

I pretty much have a regular kitchen so its pretty much old fashion.if storing them in your phone is storing them electronically them yes we do, but we have a bit of both old and new fashion.she never goes along with the video because she already knows how to do it.no because its too much to multitask

1.) My house is pretty old school. My parents arnt that good with tech so most everything is stored in a book (written) or printed off a computer and put in a binder. My folks like to be able to hold stuff and dont trust computers that much
2.) My mom occassionally watches cooking shows but never cooks along with them. Just gets ideas and trys them out later.
3.)If it were easier i think my parents would be more into the whole tech thing but it would have to be a lot simpiler

1) in my house we have alot of recipe books. But my family and I do use a labtop to look up recipes if needed.

2) I have not personaly cooked while watching a demo video but my family does.

3) I would use it more if it was available but only if it didn't get in the way.

most of time my mom tries to make her own recipes and writes it in her diary but usually the food ends up tasting nasty. Almost all the food my mom cooks is traditional food memorized.

We dont watch other chefs cook on tv because we dont know what channel and time this shows on.

If there was a monitor on the counter I dont think my mom will be able to know how to use it, so it will be meaningless.

1.Well i think my refriderator tells me how cold it is? unless you count my microwave beeping when my food is ready. My mom either has her recipes memorized or has them written down somewhere.
2.My mom should have one of her own cooking shows. so no she doesnt watch someone cook and try to follow them.
3.No probably not my mom would find the recipe and try to make it her own by adding her own twist too it. but wouldnt follow the video.

1.) My kitchen has the recipes stored electronically.
2.) Yes, because it’s easier for them to cook along, so they know their doing the correct thing.
3.) YES. Because you look down while you cook, and you can look down and cook without putting your head up to see the TV.

1) Yes we still use regular written books, where is everything what we need to cooking
2)Never, maybe sometimes cook watch video and then he starts cooking, but never cooking while watching a video
3)I´m sure that it would be much easier

1.) well, in our house, most of our recipes are memorized or written down. we don't have internet out where we live so i guess you cant really use the laptop in the kitchen lol.
2.)well actually, i sometimes watch food network and i write down the recipes and then after the show is done, i go and try to make the food, but i've never watched something and cooked at the same time.
3.) i would most certainly use it if it was on the counter, that would be so cool. lol. i know my mom will love that too. we'd probably live in the kitchen lol.
