I want to explore emerging cooking and kitchen technology for a few weeks.
Back in the 1950's, Frigidaire (an appliance company) made a short film detailing how they expected the kitchen of the future to look. They had ovens that would somehow miraculously bake and frost the cake and out it would come complete with lit candles. They had a slot where you stick in a recipe card and out pops the recipe you chose, already made up and ready to eat.
To which I say . . . (!)
I don't know about YOUR kitchen, but mine's not doing any of that cool stuff.
So on Thursday we will watch the Frigidaire film and one more old film about how folks thought kitchens of "tomorrow" would work. We will be making fun of those folks, I can guarantee.
In the meantime, be thinking about what YOU would like in the kitchen of the future. On Thursday after we watch the films we will post our own vision for future kitchens.

I would like for my kitchen to be alive so I wouldn't have to do nothing just tell it what I want to eat..hopefully that would happen in a million yrs from now.

I think in the future there will be no more kitchens because people hardly ever cook (they go to restaurants). So by this my conclusion is that in the future we might have a restaurant in our house instead of a kitchen.
Another crazy idea i have is that our planet might become unstable and our gravity would be really bad to the point were we can't cook anymore. Instead of food we are going to have little capsules that taste like food but they really are not food.
Most people enjoy cooking, but cleaning up the mess is a pain in the butt. so if this "kitchen of the future" could just automatically clean up itself that would be pretty AWESOME!
I would like a kitchen that can sense emotions so when someone comes in their emotions are scanned and they will be served a dish that fits their mood or attitude. But for those people that like to make their own food or prepare their own meals the kitchen will not scan you because you have the choice to turn it on or off anytime you want.
The kitchen can also serve dishes for certain holidays and can help set up the table, cleanup any spills that are made, and will tidy up everything when you are done chowing. I don't know if this is great or not but it's just an idea.
In my future kitchen would be special robot who would do all cooking for me, and I would just tell him what I want and he would cook it for me.. This is how would look my kitchen in the future.
my kitchen would be EPIC! it would be sweet it could tell you how much % body fat you have so you can keep that in mind while your making your selection on what to eat. to eat something you would have this touch screen looking thing and you can just scroll through what you want to eat. ohh yeah my kitchen would be sooo sweet! it could take your extra food and recycle it OMG that would save so much money!
Kitchens in the future will have the function of keeping clean. What i mean is to keep clean itself.
In the future, we will have much more elctric devices in the kitchen, so those meterials used in the kitchen have to keep the kitchen clean, or we may have olive oil on the oven processor.
And it will be easier to cook those fast food in the refrigerator. There will be a standard way of making these food and there will be a standard oven for cooking these--I'm sure that people will get much lazier in the future.
I think the kitchens of the future will still have most of the same basic technology but I think the design of the kitchen will change dramatically. I imagine everything having a chrome finish, I could see the refrigerator being built into a wall for more space in the kitchen, and I could see the kitchen appliances becoming safer to use such as the oven and stove.
in my future kitchen i would like to have cabinets and a pantry that opens by the press of a button..and a chrome refrigerator, everything chrome. with a stove that opens and close by pushing a button.and floors that look like glass
i think we are in 2010 and Mrs.L my kitchen does not do that if im hungry i gotta cook by my self....
In my kitchen of the future i want space for EVERY single drink and chips and chocolate there is! i want an oven that gets my cookies ready to eat. Oh yeah and since im mexican my momma cooks with lots of pepper which if they get on the stove they will take forever to come out so i want a stainless stove..
OH i also want a rotating refrigerator. I want a future kitchen!!!!=D

My kitchen of the future would have doors that would roll down so that you could hose it off and let it dry and cleaning the kitchen would be so much easier.

I wish my future own kitchen will have a computer that would have all the recepies in the world. That it also taste the food for me so I can be super mega sure it taste good and if it doesnt it can fix itself. Ohh have a rotating transparent fridge and an amazing oven oh and a stove that can do everything itself. and a mircrowave that can do anything and everything. oh and my kitchen it has to clean itself :)
In my future kitchen I would like to have voice activated kitchen appliances so you can do several things at one time. I think a a rotating fridge would be nice too! My kitchen of the future would also have a helping voice that could help me whenever I need help cooking!
My kitchen would look cool! it would be like all chrome. there will be absolutely nothing in the kitchen except for a big robot looking refridgerator that all you have to say is like "home made country dinner for 5" and it'll make a country dinner for five people in like one hour and all you gotta do is wait, and then when you get back in the kitchen an hour later, it'll like have the food all ready on the glass table. and there will be a robot that'll like be asking you what you want so that you don't have to worry about anything. and i will have a microwave the size of a fridge. i dont know why, but it'll be cool.
Have you ever read or seen The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? If not, there's a machine that scans your tongue and creates whaterver your craving at the moment. Hungry for pizza? Let it scan your tongue and in a couple of seconds you'll have a fresh one in front of you. Genius.
In the future, my kitchen is going to be top notch! Just like on the movie Spy Kids, I've always wanted one of those microwaves that make whatever you want, that girl wanted some McDonalds and...Ding! It was there, so thats what I want in the future!!
In my kitchen i want something that picks up, cleaned and put away dishes, sweep the floor, and cook.
My kitchen of the future has to be AWSOME....
i want everything to be controlled by thought so all i have to do is think about what i want to eat and it just fixes it automatically.
In the future I would love for my cooking utensils to fix my mistakes that I make in ALL the recipes that I attempt to prepare. Too much milk...somehow the stove would fix that. I would also like it if the kitchen would clean up the mess that is made and the dishes in the sink. But in all reality that would just make life way too easy for people.
Have you read The Ugly series? if you have, then i would like that type of "kithchen" there was this spot where you type in your code and what u want and it magically gives it to you... (or something like that, i read the series a while back...) but yeah, thats my version of a kitchen. doesnt take up that much space either.
I would like for my kitchen of the future to have a voice activated cook built into the microwave, or stove, with built in recipies, so that when I get hungry after a long day of work, I can just say "Hey kitchen, make me a daggum turkey sammich!" and then minutes later, boom! I got a turkey sammich!
after watching the frigidaire video alot of ideas came about of the perfect kitchen.. i would like for my kitchen to be completely computerized so that i could just type in what i wanted and it would be ready in 20min..but then on the other hand if we all had kitchens like that im pretty sure we would all be morbidly obese.
I would like a kitchen that was 100% self sufficient. I would like it to grow all my spices in house, an induction stove, large oven, marble counters, no nucer box, a stand up freezer and frige, a huge amount or pantrey and cabnet space, one of those awsome kitchen maid.
My future kitchen would basically make all of the current methods of cooking even easier. For example, instead of searching for the ingredients yourself, you could be able to type in what it is you need.
WOWWW i would like this because i dont like cooking but i can cook like crazy and that would give me more time to play games insted of worrying about burning stuff
so yes i would have my kitchen fully loaded maybe even to the point to where i could type what i wanted and it would be made and delivered to me if not feed to me ^_^
My kitchen would be so awesome... it would do all the work and all cooking itself which leaves a lot less food getting burnt or tasteting horrible. It would also quit having my mom or girlfriend yelling to clean the dishes, i would just have the kitchen do all the cleaning n cooking!!!!!
I would hope that my kitchen of the future looks like a restaurant kitchen with all the neat appliances and ovens that a restaurant has. I do not know what new technology they may have in the futuristic kitchens.
There are some things about the kitchen that I did like and there were some things that I didn't like. I liked the fridge and the moving island but I didn't like everything else. I was impressed by what they did, but I love baking and cooking and if I had this kitchen it would take the fun out of doing all of that because it would do it all for me.
If I could have my own kitchen of the future I would have an awesome fridge, the moving island, and I would like to have it as organized and neat as it looked but I would like to do my own work when I cook.
i would love for my kitchen to do all of that because we just have to put all the stuff you need to cook it and they would be ready in minutes and you dont have to worry about know how to cook...
in the future I want a robot to cook everything for me and clean up after itself
I think our future kitchen would be just a microwave. Considering how fast paced modern life has become to most people, everyone will want something good, cheap, and easy to prepare. You can cook just about anything in a microwave. Everything will be packed with presevative and everyone in the world will have high blood pressure and die.
I like the idea of the card-in-the-slot, but im pretty sure thats a little obsolete by now. if they were to do something like that today if it were possible, it would be cool if it were like a touch screen interface type of thing where you just type in or look for whatever meal you want, tap it, and be able to completely order it to how you like. After you choose it, you would open up the little oven that is attached to the screen and your meal is magically there (kind of like in the old videos). Sure it takes the fun out of cooking various things, but that doesnt mean you cant still cook it yourself.
i would like for my kitchen to ccok for me and fix my plate.the only thing i would have to do is just go get my plate.i would also like for my kitchen to clean up it's on mess.i think its a good ideal for our kitchen to do everything for us. i never though in my days that i would have to think or write about something like this.
in my future kitchen all i want is a flat stone so fire wood and a wooden stick all with a fire because i like everything the oldschool way and you cant go wrong with old school
i would like my future kitchen to have robots that clean the kitchen and cook healthy food so people wouldnt become fat and lazy.
My future kitchen would have to clean it self.It would make everything so easy...that would mean that everyone would be able to cook it wouldnt even matter if you ever been in the kithchen..this would just make everything so easy to use.
First off, the "Kitchen of The Future" won't come until probably 2455. So, the only way to see it would either be to be cryogenically frozen or become a vampire. And since I don't know any vampires (yet...), I would suggest the freezing part.
One thing that would be cool would be that all ingredients in your kitchen will be able to fit in both of your hands. Everything will be miniturized, so it can all be small and easy to store. There'll be a machine that will not only bring the ingredients to its proper size but also elliminate anything unnutritional. Also, the kitchen will speak to you and you can cook anything just by asking for it. You could get a vanilla ice cream cake just by asking for it. Last thing is that everything will be controllable from anywhere in the house. Feel like a burger at 3 a.m. in bed? Just press a button and BOOM! It's there.
I don't understand why the people in the 50's taught the kitchens now would look like this. Those kitchens that they showed in the videos are fabulous. In my point of view the kitchens in the future will probably look as they look now. I don't want to be like the people back then that taught the kitchens would look way cooler than now.
I would enjoy a kitchen that did the measuring and and hled recepies for you I mean I love to cook but it's a hassle keeping up with all that and if you get one thing wrong it could screw up an entire meal.
It's s great idea bit i'm afraid of how the technology could overload and stuff.
I would also like if the could also help with nutrition facts, or give give you healthy diet ideas
I wouldnt have a kitchen, instead i would have just a fridge, it would have a hole or a insertions socket, where you would put your food and store it (including drinks) Then it would have a touch screen pad on it, where you would choose what you want to eat and drink and afterwards, you wait a bit open the fridge up and the food would be right there.

In my kitchen in the future Im not gonna wanna have to be in my kitchen...so im gonna need it to cook for me. It should be able to set the table and clean up after itself and my family. All i wanna do is go and set at the table and eat it can do the rest. I want it to calculate calories (and what not) of what i eat so it can help me stay healthy...if it could do that now it would be AMAZING!!
I would like to see nutrtion facts, a weight scale, a thinggy-ma-bob that measures out exactally how many servings of somthing that you want (or limit you on how maany servings that you eat).. i would also like blenders that make my protein shakes, sorts my vitamins, and prepairs whatever meal would be most beneficial (as picked out by nutritionists) for whatever it was that i was going to do... I would also like somthing that regulates my snacks for after school. I would also like a million other things, but i'm going to end this here.
I would like have an automatic kitchen that can make everything i i said. also have my stove to said when ever the food is ready. also have my refrigerator to know what the meal will be for this day and take the food out.
that will be an excellent idea and beautiful thing to have
also keep everything clean without me have it to do it.
In the future i think it would be cool if they made it to where you could tell something in your kitchen what you would want to eat and it made it right away...just the way you like it.
what i would like is for my kitchen to be alive with the new technology people come up with and be able to tell it what to do when ever am hungry or need something. i want to have my kitchen do everything i do so that way i dont have to do anything at all. i hope it happens in a few yrs from now.
i think in the future there should be a kitchen that cleans itself and also helps maintain fresh things fresh for longer. having microwaves that heat up food in less amount of time will also be cool. the refrigerator should not only have an ice-crusher but also an ice-cream maker built in it
So, I'm not a big fan of cooking and all... but I am a good cook when I do. I don't like putting my un-used ingredients up, or cutting the things up, or even cleaning everything up. I just want everything to be ready-to-go-throw-in-the-pot-and-cook, you know what I mean? So, if I had myself a future kitchen I'd want some sorta of technology where it could dice my tomatoes, onions, whatever up and put them away when they are no longer needed. A nice vacum-bot would be nice... I just pictured a small little robot coming out of the wall and sweepin' everything off the counters and then goes back into the wall... CARTOONS, I tell you. Lol. But yeah, who needs all that kitchen stuff when you could have a perfectly good husband to do that all for you... ;D

I would like for my kitchen of the future to clean up.
I would like my kitchen to do everthing. I would like my kitchen appliances to be voice activated that way I can do alot of things at once. It would be alot faster instead of doing one thing at a time. That way you won't burn anything when your in the kitchen.. Bet my mom would want to live with me if i had all that.. ;)
I like the utencils coming out of the table top. That rotating fridge thing was a good start but i would rather have fridge that stores things underground, that has a library of all its inventory and you just find what you want and it brings it up to you. Also the fridge would throw out food thats past exeration or warn you like "The item you have selected is past its exiration date". I would like a universal Oven/Microwave/stove that you put the food in and the OMS scans the food and cooks it arporiatly. Also a Dish washer that cleans the dishes then distributes them to a storage unit, and you que up the dishes you want and it brings you them much like the fridge brings food. Ontop of all this when you first enter the kitchen it would be just a tiled room, and you just speek what you need and it rises out of the tiles. same for a counder top.
In the kitchen of the future, I'd like extremely advanced and readily available cooking technology that would make cooking more efficient, without omitting the human element of it. Automatic ingredient dispensers (with correct doses), a moving island, high-tech ovens, and all that would be great, but the person in the kitchen should ideally remain there to conduct the cooking process and making sure the machines don't mess anything up (not playing tennis, golf, or sunbathing). The spinning fridge would be great, especially if it told you the nutritional information for whatever you took out of it.
In the future of the kitchen i see see the kitchen becoming more of a big machine. It would look kind of like a refrigerator only larger. Where like a keyboard pops our like in front of you, you type what you want (the quantity, quality, and specifications), then out comes exactly what you ask for (and clean up in non-existant). That, or something like the Jetson's kitchen. I havent watched that show in years but, if i remember correctly, their kitchen (and their whole house) was beast!
I would like a white maid that is like a robot but still white OH YEAH!!! What do you say Mrs. L i think you would like it too!!!!I want the smart house thing so it can wake me up in the morning and make me breakfest and healthy shakes and all that good stuff!!!!! Oh yeah also that little tv thing that follows you around so you dont miss a thing.
wat i would like in my kitchen of the furture is capsules to store more food and other stuff. i did like how the knifes popped out of the counter. but not a big change for my kitchen,just alittle things here and there
Well when I cook it is always a pain to measure the food and then my hands always get messy and I wash them constantly so it would be nice if my hands did not always get messy and then I hate the clean up so it should just magically suck everything on the floor and clean it.

I would appreciate a talking kitchen with like a butler voice, and touchscreen devices so everything is easy to use. If I needed ingredients or anything of the sort my kitchen could act as a computer with like built in wi-fi to look up ingredients for a recipe or it could tell me where something is in my Handy Dandy kitchen in the voice of Alfred the butler from Batman xD
Well i want my kitchen to not be so much alive, but i want it to cook evertything for me. i only want to get the ingredients out and tell my kitchen what i want to be cooked. i would also love my kitchen if it washed dishes and put them up.

Hmmmmm i would like to have a kitchen that would do ANYTHING...even clean its self and be super fast. It would know how to cook everything! like pizza..mmmm i love pizza. Oh and a little like motorized small table that would bring me the food when it wuz done, that would be awesome. At least until the kitchen short circutes and poisons me and then takes over the world!! im just sayin, that could happen

In my kitchen I would have every thing to be voice activated.My fridge would show what food had gone bad so I wont eat it. There would be no knifes because everything I would need would already be cut.Alos I will not cook because I would say what I want and it will make it.
i think future kitchens will do anything you tell them to do.
i would want a seethrough icebox and for all the appliances to slide out. i would also want secret places in the appliances like mrs.smith.
In my future kitchen I would have a special head device that you could hook yourself up to and then it would just read your thoughts and act according to what you want it to do. I also would have a robot like on the Jetsons.
in my kitchen i would have a stove that you just put for how long you want the food to cook for and to check if the food is ready i will also have a refrigerator that has pictures of the food you have and you click the picture of the food or drink you want.
I hope in my future kitchen to look all high tech and fancy. I would want to be able to just say what I want and it could cook it for me, and for someone who cant cook, like me, it would be very convinient. Also in my kitchen I would want a self cleaner, because the worst part about cooking food at home is you have to clean up your mess after your done.
If I to have a future kitchen, I'd definitely want it to be able to hold more food, preferably an endless amount. I would appreciate something that would remind me of how much I'd eaten that day, and what would be sufficient for the rest of it. Instead of a moving table, a little scooter that I could ride around in would be nice, but that doesn't have much to do with cooking. The last thing I'd like is an oven that would know how long to cook.
in my kitchen i would like to have a million cool things...for one thing i hate cleaning after cooking a big meal what a drag soo i would like for my kitchen to clean itself...
Okay I agree with Angel Reyes i don't think the future kicthen will come until 2400-2500.
Now i would like a freezer that kept everything fresh for a year and would be a voice compatable, meaning i would say what i want and it would get it for me without me stick my hand in the freezer. Then i would want everything to be controllable from anywhere in the house so that if i want nachoes in bed at 7:30 p.m. say nachoes please and boom there is a plater of nachoes. Next thing is that it would have a automatic cleaning system that way i don't have to wash dishes anymore. Last thing is i would want something in the freezer that would tell you "That is unhealthy for you just letting you know, i don't care if you get fat". ha ha ha Ha Ha Ha HA HA HA HA the future is finally here. Come my friends lets feast.
My future kitchin will be voice activated and will talk to you. it will set the timer and temp for your oven and what not. it will do what ever you ask it to.
In my kitchen of the future, I think I would like different stations of like foreign food and all I would have to do is tell it what I want and it would make it. And it'd be cool if my kitchen knew when it was going out of food and it would order food for itself so I wouldn't have to go out and get grocerys.

I feel that in the future people will be far too lazy to cook their own food. A highly probable outcome of our race will be fast food trucks (similar to ice cream trucks) and im sure they will be much more suffisticated. (i cant spell that lol) So in truth the future kitchen does not exist, period
my future kitchen would look like a kitchen card that i can use because i cant cook and a big screen TV to watch tv no matter and a dining room to socialize with my family
For my kicthen of the future, I would like robots in my kicthen to make me anything I want, especially grilled cheeses. I would also like an oven that would work perfectly for 649 years. Also, I would really like a some kind of a combination of a microwave and an oven.
I want a robot to make all my food. Like the one off the Benchwarmers movie that made all the cool sandwiches.
i would like my pantry to keep track of what i have and what i'm running low on and print out a list of what i need to go get. NO GROCERY LIST MAKING!!!
In my ideal future kitchen, I would LOVE to have the thing where it puts the correct amount of ingredients in it if it was stocked, because I have a big problem with measuring stuff sometimes. A huge refrigerator would be nice, and you know, some things are supposed to be kept at a certain temperature, so the different sections of the fridge could possibly have different temperatures. Also everything in the videos we saw, that would be quite legit. The only thing I didn't like was the cake took too long. If it was honestly going to take THAAAAAAAAT long to bake a cake...I might as well just use a regular oven honestly.
I'd love to have a kitchen with access to every food in the world, simply because I want to have said I've tried everything. I don't want my kitchen to cook for me, that's absolutely ridiculous. Especially due to the fact that some people love cooking. I do think a system that would detect and clean grease spills, food spillovers and everything, all by itself. I think just a built in sous chef that would follow your commands and provide you with what you asked would be brilliant. Naturally, it would have programming to be a head chef if people were that lazy. That's the kitchen for the cooking enthusiast, and that's exactly what I want to see.
i would like to have just a plain normal counter that would do anything such as heating and baking your food and plates as a microvave, and cleaning after itself like a sink after im done eating.
My kitchen of the future....ah...wow...I personally think my kitchen is fine as long as it has food in it but what would be nice is if the fridge (at least my fridge doesnt)had an ice despencer water despencer and added bonus a shave ice despencer w/ included syrups mmmmm. I saw a comercial a long time ago whwer the wonan opened her pantry and steped in and it was a ware haus type setting where all the canned food would keep itself stacked and in order and continually restock so it would never run out. yes I want one. But 1st things 1st I want a fridge with and ice and watre despencer.
Well if i had a future kitchen it would make the food look professional and tast great for 1 thing. i would have abunch of safety stuff that i wouldnt hurt myself on and only i could figure out. i wouldnt want too much moving stuff cuz i would end up losing track of where something is moving to. but since i want to be a cook i wouldnt want it to do all the cooking for me. maybe just supply me with the indgredients i need to cook or other cooking suggestions. i would also like a giant fridge that i myself could fit in when i was getting hot cooking. The End.
I would love to have that refridgerator in the video, but maybe a touch screen to select which items you need and it will be automatically sent onto the counter. The kitchen should have a self-cleaning feature to everything, when you put the dishes in the sink it will clean them, if you drop food on the floor, it will automatically be cleaned, etc. Would want the whole put the recipe card in and have the machine cook the food for you.
i would like my kitchen to be ten years ahead of technology. for example when you walk in the kitchen it scans your body temp, blood pressure etc.....so it can tel you what you can eat
In the future i would like to have an oven that whenever you put whatever you were cooking in it that you could click whether you want it baked/fried/roasted etc ... id also like to have a freezer that cooked whatever you were getting out of it before you got it out. like you'd pick out waffles and it would shoot out hot waffles (maybe with syrup already on them) ... and a pantry that was voice activated and whatever you said would come out to the front of the selves ... that'd be pretty cool
in my kitchen of the future there would be no kitchen. Just a room that would respond to voice commands.
