Blog 18 1/17/11

Thanks for logging in!

Let's get deep this week.

I want to talk about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his thoughts on technology.

In 1964 Dr. King delivered a lecture the day after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in which he told his audience at the University of Oslo that "material advancement was meaningless without an accompanying moral structure." In other words, the growing abundance of technology is undermining the human spirit. My favorite quote from the article is: "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually," he said. "We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers."

This week I'm asking you to think, REALLY THINK about Dr. King's words. I want his words to work on you a little bit.

He is telling us that technology advancement needs to go hand in hand with spiritual advancement, or it's all for nothing. THINK. Do you agree or disagree with Dr. King? WHY? You will answer both of those questions to receive credit this week.

Talk to me . . .

I kind of agree with Dr.King because with all this technology people don't sit down and enjoy a good all talk anymore.

IF they want to talk they text and now some phones have video chat which may cause you to just talk to your family members like that insted of siting down and having a normal talk.

fuentes, m - 1 said...

I agree with the statement. Why? Because I think that the world can be really high in technology but if there is no brotherhood then whom will be there for you to listen, or why would it matter? I think that if we value materialism more than spiritualism then the world will slowly decrease into nothing. I think that in order to grow in technology that you have to have a proportional brotherhood, like Martin Luther King Jr. said. I agree with MLK that brotherhood is more important than the advancement of technology. Brotherhood is what God prefers the most.

patton, e - 1 said...

I agree. The more advanced our technology becomes the less we do things on our own, and there is less required of us.

The value of a face to face conversation is a lot more meaningful and genuine than a text or an email.

weaver, c - 1 said...

I agree with Dr.King because all the new technology changes the way people do things theese days.

wallace, o-1 said...

I think Dr. King is trying to say in order to appreciate technology at its fullest you have to have good morals.
And i agree with Dr.King because I think advancements in morals are equal to advancements in technolgy.

vazquez, j - 1 said...

I agree with Dr. Martin Luther King and the idea that we should use the technology that we invent to help our relationships with the world and our peers. If we pay attention to people rather than a tv screen.

fuentes, e - 1 said...

In my opinion, I agree with Dr. King. I agree with him because everyday technology is advancing and everyday people are becoming more and more materialistic. I think we should pay more attenttion to our "spiritual lag" instead of giving all the attention to material things. It's much more important to be at peace with yourself than to have everything in the world.

butler, m - 1 said...

i agree with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because the more technology we get, the more and more we get unconnected with things that really matter.

juarez, a - 1 said...

I agree with Dr.King. We have all these technology but less communication. Technology is suppose to bring us together at some point but I think its making us less sociable and with poor communication skills. Now we use texting and that makes communication less personal. When you have a conversation with someone you actually interact with the person and not with the computer. You cant hug you mom threw the internet.

stegall, j - 1 said...

I agree with Dr.King because the rich and wealthy can afford the technology and don't have any time to just sit and enjoy a nice day with their family they just use their technology but the unwealthy poor people can not afford the technolgy so to entertain themselves they have to sit down talk and spend time with their family

I agree with Dr. Martain Luther King because it doesn't make any sense of us as human beings to depend on materialistic things even though most of us do. And because of this we have lost our connection with what really matters in life which should be your spiritual connection with whatever religious origin you are from. But on the other side i can't quite figure out how technology needs to go hand in hand with spiritual advancement, although it might be true i just cannot compherend it without making it a religious conversation.

Parkhurst, M-2 said...

I agree with Dr. King completely because if technology gets too far ahead of humanity and our control as a whole over it is lost then we risk the chance of malfunction and possibly worse. The competing parties should still have a healthy challenge against one another for variety but I believe that everyone should understand the others ideas and projects as well as they know their own to bring the minds of the world together and compell even further than individually.

chitopina-2 said...

I do agree with Dr. King, we must spiritually advance as our technology advances. He says "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually." This is true, its ridiculous how much time we spend on technology, yet we dont spend anytime enhancing our spirituality! Not trying to preach, but because Dr. King was a preacher I do think he was at least somewhat hinting at this! The internet is an amazing tool. but many people use it for the wrong reasons. Recently many poeple have been "cyber bullied" which illustrates Dr. King's reasoning behind his statement,"We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers."

Miller, J - 2 said...

i agree with Dr. King. as we advance further with technology we forget about our fellow "brothers" and rely on our tech. every thing is going digital nowadays, and we need to get away from that sometimes, and enjoy life. like today... i forgot my cell phone T.T ... but, wtih out it, im noticing the small things that make me happy i guess.. any way, every one take a break from your gaming console, computer, etc. and spend time with your family and friends :) why? because, soon we will forget how to come together and only rely on technology :(

Pina, R-2 said...

I agree with Dr. King, because I do believe that the more money people have the less time they spend with their family. They spend more time worrying about having the newest cars, and newest technology, just because they can have it, but it really doesn't bring them joy. I have spoken.

Rodriguez,A-2 said...

i completely agree with Dr.King. it seems the more money people have the more they want so they become greedy and stop caring about anything but themselves. i think that technology has somewhat to do that. some countries are inventing newer and more advanced guns and bombs that will do nothing but harm society.

brooks-2 said...

i agree with Dr.King , whats the point in haveing tech if its not used in a moraly ritous way,

vega, u - 2 said...

I agree with Dr. King. If all we do is advance technologically, without advancing spiritually, then we may as well be machines. The whole point of our intelligence is to create benefits for ourselves and others. If we only concentrate on ourselves then wars are started. And what will be used in the wars? All the technology that has been developed. Using technology to help others creates connections between people, not just physical connections but spiritual ones too. As humans, we are all connected by what we feel and how we are affected by others' decisions. So if we are to end all of the wars that continue to pop up, we have to learn how to bring our spiritual and moral connections up to the level of our technology.

blank, d - 2 said...

I would have to disagree technology and spirituality are two different things and are going to evole at different rates. Saying that they should andvance together would be holding one back or making it change to quickally. It is not all for nothing if they dont advance hand and hand, because technology is still technology with out spirituality and vica versa.

wilson, k - 4 said...

I do agree with what Dr. King said. We are forgetting the most important things, getting along and loving each other. Who cares if we can swim in the sea or fly in the air if we hate each other?

vargas, k - 4 said...

I agree with Dr. King because one of the main things that technology has affected today is how we communicate with each other. We use to be able to sit down and talk to each other face to face but with new forms of communication brought to us by techonology, people can just get on facebook or myspace or twitter. Techonology has also made people more materialistic. Someone is always trying to prove that they are better than somebody else by having the newest phone or car or something.

Reyes, A-4 said...

I disagree with Dr. King. Technology and spirituality have almost nothing to do with the other, other than one's spirituality might effect his use of technology. Even if technology advances to the point of flying cars and teleporters, that doesn't mean that it will affect one's spirituality.

Haskins,T-4 said...

ok i do agree with him and i also have my own opinion
the advancements in technology some good some bad is tearing us all apart spirtually
an example is planes(bombers) tanks mines and other mititary technology

i feel that if they are able to come up with this they should be able to come up with some way to help bring about world peace

now days people are so worried about material possesions and technology that they are willing to kill over it but they are blind to wat really matters material possesions come and go but u got one spirit and u can never get another and never will

Toth, d - 4 said...

i agree, because everyone now a days wants certain types of technology and they will do anything to get it, instead of worrying about there lifes.

I agree with MLKJ's statement. Because this generation is so instant like if we need to talk to anybody now we don't really get together and spend time cause of cell phones and computers. Yes, those things are helpful but at the end of the day its those friends and family that mattter.
We value material things more than we do spiritual. To me he's saying its okay to have material things, but lets not let them take over quality time like brotherhood and spending time with our peers.

milo, v 4 said...

I agree with Dr. King because the futher and futher we get into new developments of technology the less we do the work by ourselfs.

MLK is correct because i think a face to face conversation is better in person then a text, phone call, or even now a face-face video call. Brotherhood is what we had way before technology was even invetnted. We should destroy brotherhood, we should conserve it

young, j - 4 said...

Dr.Kings words are very much true, and i agree with them. With all of these new inventions, gadgets, and technology, we become drawn into doing things by ourselves, rather than interacting with others. without interaction, there can be no advancement, so basically, the more technology advances, the more we grow apart from each other, unless we can find a way to use it against this conflict.

that's my opinion, at least.

emborgo, t - 4 said...

I agree with this because people are getting more and more unattached to each other because of technology such as computer and phones. Yeah you talk to them over the media but you don't make the most out of it when you meet face to face because you can always get on your phone and talk to them over it. Having a good talk with somebody is the best way to communicate. No video chat, text, or call can top that.

carrillo, c - 4 said...

In my personal opinion I agree with Dr.King Jr, because in these days people prefer more using technology, than spending time with their people. They can communicate with people throughout computers. But it's not the same as communicating with them face to face. And technology is pulling people apart.

gutierrez, n - 4 said...

i do agree with Dr.King because technology is making us not to be closer together like we use to. know you can talk to each other in the phone or by your camera and its not the same talking in the phone or by your camera then in person. i also agree in the brotherhood 2 because ever body should get along with each other. it doesnt matter what race you are we all should get along no matter what.

I would have to agree because it seems like the more technology that are world creates the more we stop depending on our own, and others. It's seems as though people are taking advantage of technology,People don't communicate as needed anymore. Now it's all text and email. What happened to real face to face convo and real meetings instead of confrence calls? We have to communicate as humans to get along, communication is key.

rivera, m - 4 said...

I agree with Dr. King because is true about ...progress in science and technology has not been equaled by "moral progress"..because the more technology we have improve the more people in general slack off now in day people dont talk on phones as much or talk in person instead they txt or e-mail someone which doesnt really count when we really look at the situation WE are causing. That means we shouldnt really worry about the technical items sorrounding us as much, but notice the people that surround us.

pedroza, y - 4 said...

i agree with what Dr. King says "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually", we spend so much time on the internets reading useless junk texting 24/7 yet a lot of people "dont have time" to go to church read the bible etc.

tedder, d - 4 said...

I agree, the more technology we get the less people do in this world. We dont think as much as we should because we look towards the internet for help and we become lazy. People dont even go and see each other anymore, they just use their phones or e-mail to talk to others. People's social skills decrease because of the technology they use and that they dont go out to socialize with friends or others.

diverdi, d - 4 said...

i disgree with it bc technology and spirituality arent the same thing and arent really on the same scale together but both really important but completly two diffrent things

Thompson, C - 5 said...

I agree with Kings statement about how the advancment of technology and spirituality should go hand in hand, but the advancment of thechnology is inevetable and shouldn't be slowed or stopped just because we cant get along. people have had their differences since the dawn of man and we will always have differences, even before technology was around.

ewing, r - 5 said...

On one hand, I completely agree with Dr. King; technology is a privlange and we shouldn't have it if we can't even get along with each other, it would do more harm than good at that point.. But on the other hand, I have a question for King... How? How can you make sure that people are morally sound enough for technology? Who are you do decide who is and isn't, and what is and is not moral or spiritual? What may be to one person, may not be to another.

THEREFORE, I agree with him, but it is impossible to make happen.

almeida, m - 5 said...

I agree because this world need more love than materials. Now we should see us as brothers and sister so we can comunicate more by texting or talking. Now with the technology that we have, for sure can be the best excuse to start talking with a member of our family. there's no such bad thing then not talk with your family.

mejia, c - 5 said...

I agree with Dr.King because all this new technology is changing how everyone does something there own way. Now instead of talking face to face we either text or call. Even with the new technology which is Face Time.

i do agree with Dr.king in the speech he made about improving the technology and making it better.
with the technology he improve made it more easy for people to talk to friends, family, and other people in the world. by using the technology the people dont have to sit next to each other and talk now they can be in different places and still talk.
people should enjoy the new technology.

adams, i - 5 said...

i agree with what he said because we as people do spend alot of time these days on computers,tv's, cells phones and other things. and we still have discrimination goin on. if we just looked around and realized that we are all just human then the world would be a much better place.

curry, b - 5 said...

I agree with Dr. King's idea. We, as humans, are able to accept the advancement of technology and just go along with it but we still cant except people for who they are. Whether it be their ethnicity or religion. To me, he is saying that in order to truly appriciate technology you have to have good morals and have brotherhood. Also, the more technological advancements we have the less is expected from us personally. Why do things that something else can do for you?

johnson, d - 5 said...

I agree with what he said, Because i think people depend on technology to help them with mostly everything they do and they dont go out and do things for themselves...
And some people would rather talk or text rather than have a face to face conversation with somebody.

Myers, K-5 said...

I agree completely with Dr. King's statement. People are becoming their technology; they've literally mended themselves to their game controllers and keyboards.

We have so many new disorders developing because of our technology. People have begun to lock themselves up in their house and just sit around and play their video games. Obesity is increasing because of the lack of excersise and consumption of unhealthy foods. We've forgotton who we are, honestly. And as opposed to walking outside to check your mail and have a friendly chat with your neighbor, you text your mom to bring it in to you so you can play with your newest toy. It's hard to have a normal conversation if you're just texting, "Hey, how are you?" and you get a response 5 minutes later saying, "Good, you?" People have forgotten what it's like to talk face to face, and I think it's a real problem honestly...

norsworthy, i -5 said...

I would have to say I completly agree because in today's time the internet, cell phones, and other various ways, are used to "bash" people. Not just that but also technically you never physically have to be with people, or as we like to call it "chill" with people, because we can just long on to the computer, or some celluar devices have it too, and virtually chat/chill, with someone via skype or other programs.

I think we should have technology but not rely on it as much. I would much rather have a face to face conversation with some one rather then text or e-mail or even skype.

With the rate technology is going we will not have brotherhood and our spiritual rate is going down rapidly also. We need to stop relying on materialistic things as much and snap back to reality and actually interact with each other!

Silva-A-5th said...

I agree with Dr.King because the technology there is today people have less time to spend with family.

hernandez, a - 5 said...

I agree with Dr. King because with the newest technology available we, as a whole, have backed away from socializing in a face to face manner. We no longer rely on our instants and intuitions about how we feel towards a person but on whether or not their facebook profile is to our liking. Technology is good as long as we know how to use it properly, and giving it its place amoung more valuable things such as family and friends is important to keep that "human spirit" alive.

vineyard, w - 5 said...

I disagree with Dr. King. Although science and religion are technically the same thing (they're both ways of explaining the world around us, backed by different groups of people), technological advancement and his so-called spiritual advancement can actually go hand in hand. The only problem between the union of the two concepts has nothing to do with the flawed notion of spirituality, but the greed and hunger for power found in the human psyche. The potential for the "growth of the soul" can be found, nurtured, and brought into full bloom by oneself, without the aid of religion. In fact, it could even be considered that religion has actually brought about this moral decline that King described: religion gives the masses a rigid moral code when they could merely revert to their own common sense, so without some autonomy in people's moral compasses, their sense of right and wrong has no opportunity to grow under the oppression of any religion. When the world can see for themselves how they should live and treat others, then maybe moral advancement can catch up with the ever-increasing levels of technology.

i agree with him, cause he is saying like we have the technology to do something, now lets use it in a grown up way and not mass world blown up thing. and today we have iphones that we can see the other person we are talking to and not just hear there nappy voice.

morris, j - 7 said...

Sadly i disagree with Dr. King because we need to get as far as we can in technology becuase if we don't and we go by his way advance by spiritual advancement i am afraid that we would become far behind other countries in technology and we need to stay close to the top not only for us but for our military, navy, etc. Cause if somebody finds out how to make a ships armour better than it is but still make it go the same speed then by all means upgrade our navy. Ya'll may not agree with me but i don't care cause this is my opinion. I BLOGGED MRS. LANHAM. 100 PLEASE?

I agree because that is true. like if you talk to people and them they go talk crap behind your back in facebook or twitter thats not right. and because people just text now in days instead of having a real conversation. you also need to have more respect spiritually than materialism.

I agree with what he is saying because the more we text and IM the more of the english language were losing, when we dont even know it all to start with, this new technology is really cool but is it actually helping us?

I agree it does need to go hand in hand because we invent guns and weapons to help us but if we are not spiritually careful and ready for these advancements, we might be hurting more than ourselves.

I agree with King bacause we all get caught up in the wordly things and go against each other just like racism and gang related things and if people wanna talk they either txt or email etc. i understand that all of those things are good but happened to calling up some friends going out to eat and all that video chat stuff not the same as talking to the person face to face we all just get so caught up in the "i have money" stage and forget about other people and their feelings also family we forget about and these things that we have access to is effecting our spiritual life mind body and soul and me personallty would love to live in the old days before internet and txt and video and all that i think we would be more comfortable around each other than we are now

I really like the movements of Dr.King because he was able to do all of this with non-violent actions, we need more people like him.
Long Live the Dream ;)

I do agree with Dr.King's words, in order to make some kind of further advancement we must all learn to work together and tolerate one another to acheive greatness because if we all dislike each other then nothing will get done. Everyone would fight just for power and become corrupt with what they have. Technology has taken away moments where people could sit down and communicate with one another but now we have phones, text messaging, social networking and skype with that it takes away memorable moments people could have today but with technology we have earned many positive things as well.

reyna, j - 7 said...

I agree with what he is saying. Now and days people can't have a real conversation face to face because they are used to talking by text. The technology that we have and will have later on in the future will probobly help us in certin situations but because its going to be so high tech we probobly have more truble speaking to people in person and it will end up hurting us in the end.

murphey, l - 7 said...

Well I agree with Dr. King.

He says that we may gain in technology but lose so much more. True

We gain and advance in technology but in all of that we lose morals such as self-respect and manners. We also lose work ethic. Technology allows users to send inappropriate things back and forth, whether it's pictures or words. It also helps us in all of the manual or mental work, therefore it does make us a little lazy and un-social.

morgan, d - 7 said...

I agree with King, as the more technology we have, the more distant and numb it makes us towards our fellow human beings. While technology is great for society, I worry that soon people will forget about the connections that make us human as they succumb to computers and the lack of face-to-face interaction.

ponce, j - 7 said...

I agree with Dr. King becaouse of all the technology we have today and the new advances in it dont really require people to be present to have a conversation or show emotion, such as texting or calling. Almost everybody uses they're fones to text someone or call, its better to be present and to talk normally.

soto, e - 7 said...

I agree with what the statement says why? Because u can't see someones excitement threw a text message or can you? I think not. Very, VERY good comments this week. Thank you for your thought!

I completely understand what Dr. King was talking about. Fundamentally, I DO agree with what he said. We DO need to advance spiritually as well. And please don't confuse spirituality with religion . . . they are not necessarily one and the same.

But I also think that Dr. King could NEVER have grasped the huge technological advances that were coming. Can you imagine if he suddenly came back today?!? He would be astounded that we carry phones around in our pockets and that our cars talk to us!

I also thought Ryan Ewing had a good point . . . who gets to decide if we're morally righteous enough to use the new technology?

And Wilson? You completely made my point about the difference between religion and spirituality. TY.

I agree with the words of Dr. King.
What is the point of being so far advanced technologically if we, as people, do not advance socially and become distant from our fellow Americans. Why have flying cars or teleporters when you have no one to share with? Thoughts to go and live by. Period.

Unknown said...

I completely agree. If you think about it, the more technology comes, people grow more and more into themselves. They don't think about others and everything gets distracting. For example: Whenever I hang out with my friends, I want to say about 3-4 of them have iPhones and one has an iPod touch. Whenever we are hanging out together half of them are playing on them instead of spending time with their friends. Also, I am guilty of this, but whenever I should be spending time with my family, I will be sitting there texting other people or playing on Facebook. The more and more technology advances, the less and less we focus on other people. Hopefully there will be some type of epiphany to the world and the people themselves that we need to focus on people more than the technology in our laps, just sayin'.

vasquez, j - 8 said...

I agree with King because its very noticable that people today are abit sorry "alot slower" than the people of his age. To prove this you can just look at the literature of how we wright and how the people from the 1400's would write. We have gotten alot simpler how we can change back i have no idea because peple today are also vary hard headed as well. Pointless nuff said.

I Disagree with King's words, because there is a fight to improve technology in different countries and as long as there is a competition there won't be as big a change in our lives morally and spiritually. I mean sure we can communicate love and brotherhood but just as easily communicated is hate. RIght?

scoggins, l - 8 said...

I agree with King's ideas because misfortune and want are often the only way to improve the spirit, and with the abundance of technology today, the majority do not have the opportunity to live without it.

matthews, j - 8 said...

I agree with Dr. King's words because technology really has become apart of everyones lives with computers, cellphones, and whatever inventors creative minds can come up with. Even though that those things can help us get closer to people, it somehow is making us grow farther apart.

Computers, they are a huge essential in everyones life and are a great way of communicating with others all around the world, but it's not so great when you see teenagers glued to the screen on Facebook, not actually socializing in the real world.

Also the same for cellphones, sure its easy to send a quick text message to someone, but does it really hurt to just call that person? Especially if your having a huge conversation about something. I know I'd rather talk it out then text 50 different messages about the dilema.

stinson, m - 8 said...

i agree with him. My reasoning is because with all this technology now you can txt people instead of talking to them face to face and that to me causes unsureness cause i dont know if there lyin to me.

murillo, j - 8 said...

Well i kinda agree with MLK but my disagreements excessely overwhelms his opinions about technology. There's many philosophers and great scholars (such as Isaac Isimov) that suggests that if we decide to process our technology with morals, we wouldn't be able to make our modern world as it is today. Just look at the Nazis, of course ther were bad but they made great technological achivements that significantly change the world (nuclear uses, rockets, genetics, ect.). We could have cured cancer a long time ago if our morals didn't interfere with our cloning humans. With morals involving in technology, it wont be technology. Its just the way of science.

rhodes, t - 8 said...

I agree with Dr. King because i think that the advancement of technology to make our lives eaiser is great but if you want to make your life better then we as a society need to further advance our relations with one another and learn to live as brothers and not strangers.

carter, j - 8 said...

I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. King's view of technological advancements. I agree with him because for one thing, over the past two or three decades, technology has gotten too big (literal in some cases, metaphorical in other cases) too fast, and it is majorly interfering with traditional lifestyles. A really good example is the whole cell phone and Internet situation. Nowadays, instead of writing letters to people far away, we can just email or instant message them instead. Also, most teens (and even some pre-teens) would much rather talk to or text their friends or instant message them online than actually go to their house and talk to them in person. This is crippling not only adolescents, but everyone socially. So it seems that Dr. King hit the nail on the head by saying that "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually".

I agree with MLK because the more time we spend away from our friends and family to do a technology activity, that's loosing a moment you could've shared with your family and friends

i agree with dr.king because when we get new technology we don't do nothing but play with it.

Why??

because kids ge out of control with their new things, and they might not do anything when they get home but get on their new things like a wii, ps3.and etc.

Dr. King is absolutely right. The world is rampant with technological advancements, and devoid of quality time with humans. We hide behind mediums to deliver our words and thoughts to others, instead of saying them ourselves. And it's strange, everyone seems to agree with Dr. King, but no one wants to truly do what it takes to change things. We will remain disconnected and numb to the world around us unless we actually decide to make some sacrifices.

I agree because its true the more advanced technology gets,we get lazier to the point we are not going to get up. Become too dependent on technology.

I also agree that we don't talk face to face as often and we don't need to lose that.

i agree and disagree...why??

beacuse yeah technology is making us human kinda use less because we are depending too much on it, but it kinda makes us work together to build that technology and when we need help fixing something technical we as other people for help which makes us work together.
people are and will always be looking for material things instead of the actaul things that matter!!!!
