Blog 23 3/1/11

Howdy Folks! Step on up . . .

Thank yall for the ideas last week about future technology blogs. I found myself looking at the ideas and wondering why we haven't done military technology yet this year, so that's what we're gonna do.

For those of you who haven't taken my class before, you might be surprised to learn that I'm a war buff. I love reading about any military operations, but especially Vietnam and Iraq. It's a life that is foreign to me, so I want to absorb all I can about it.

I guess this interest started in college when I had a history professor who would come in, move everything aside on his desk, sit down and just start talking. About Vietnam. You see, he was a Marine at that time . . . boots on the ground in a land that was completely foreign to him. He would talk for HOURS each class meeting and he held our attention. You could hear a pin drop in that room. He even made us read a book that was written by a Marine in his unit who would later go on to win a Pulitzer Prize. The book was named "A Rumor of War." And that's where my interest began.

This week I'm reading The Long Road Home by Martha Raddatz, who is an ABC news correspondent who has covered foreign military operations for years. This book is about a Ft. Hood unit who gets pinned down in Sadr Iraq. It's a pretty interesting read.

So for this week's blog please take a look at this website devoted to future military technology:

http://science.howstuffworks.com/future-military-technology.htm

There are 14 new military technology ideas on that page. For blog credit this week you will need to pick at least one and comment about how it could assist our soldiers.

Talk to me . . .

I'm doing my blog on "how Laser Weapons Work". i think that this will help a lot in the military because this well actually help the shooter know where he is aiming, and it will be much faster than having to reload a gun and stuff like that. i think that if the U.S. military had this then it would be a better way to kill the opponent. a bad thing about this is that when you shoot, people around you automatically know where you are.

I liked the idea over "How Exoskeletons Will Work" because I think it will make our soldiers more efficient on the battlefield .

I read about the fule cell. This really come in handy. If your stranded in unknown territory and your out of battery, you've got a Fule Cell!!

I choose, "How Military Robots Will Work," the robots can help our soliders by doing the more dangerous jobs for us. I think these robots will come in handy because we get tired of our people dying.

fuentes, e - 1 said...

I think the virtual military applicatins is a a good idea for our solidiers to train for the battlefield. For one thing it is safer and on the other hand it's also not as expensive as them training in real life situations.

i think that the exoskeleton suit is gunna be AWESOME! it can make our soldier 2 times faster and much stronger. it is said to be at least a decade away, but deffinately worth the weight. ground units could use these suits to carry heavier fire power which means they are better protected.

juarez, a - 1 said...

The Exoskeletons cought my attention. They are so cool looking and i think they would help our military a lot. These suits would be great improvemnt. I wonder if they could make them bullet proof? Im pretty sure they could be.

baeza, n - 1 said...

The military robot was what caought my attention..
many times soldiers have to go in to dangeroud places to do very important and very dangerous jobs..what if instead of them going they had the military robot go and do it?
if they used the robots instead of a human life we wouldnt be loosing a human life but a robot and like the article ses "we can always build more robots."
This Military Robot could be a very good help to the soldiers!!

I like the exoskeleton idea. This can help not only military soldiers but also policemen, shipwrights...all kinds of people who need strength and speed, which are creatures' basic needs.
It's definitely hard to tell the suit how to move, anyway. I guess the best way is to connect it with human's brain...but what if the electricity burn my brain ??

santoyo, l - 1 said...

I also like the idea over "How Exoskeletons Will Work" like Wallace,O. This suit might be the closest to humans having superpowers. It will help our soldier do a lot of stuff in possible for normal soldiers like jump cars and lift really heavy objects like cars. Which could save a lot of lives.

As you might already know i play a lot of video games and this suit looks a lot like the ones of the game Crisis 2. In the game the suit has a lot of cool stuff like turning you invisible for a short period of time to being able to jump on top of buildings.

vazquez, j - 1 said...

My blog is about the "How the exoskeleton will work." Even though its a good idea to give our troops an easier way to journey through their military career, the idea of cheating our way out of labor will make us rely on those suits even more. Plus if one of our ground soldiers is downed, won't the enemy try to get their hands on this technology to their advantage? It's an interesting idea but when sacrifices are made and dreams are all that we spend money on, I think we are going to lose more rather than gain success.

I think "virtual reality" applications in miltary is a good idea. It provides safer training ways to soilders and reduces the pressure on financial because it is more cheaper than practicing in reality, such as to treat height phobias and so on. Also, it helps to analyze military maneuvers, find better battlefield positions... I believe VR will be used more commonly in the future.

I like the "How Exoskeletons will work." It automatically reminded me of the GI Joe movie where they had those cool suits that made them faster and jump higher. If these suits can be made, I believe that there will be a decrease in death rates of American soldiers. It makes them stronger, faster, and able to jump higher. Our soldiers will definitely have the advantage!

I Pick THE PAIN BEAM.... i think i saw something similar to it on tv last nite when i was watching THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Its kind of freaky knowing there is something that could burn your skin with out you touching it. We are not in a world where giant green beasts roam the earth so why does the military need something like this..???

so i read about laser weapons..i think this is interesting its like something that you see in video games or movies that you would never think that they could actually be made..wrong!! the air force has already created two of them..the Airborne Laser and the PHaSR.which the PHaSR is just like a regular weapon but its huge!! (i wish i could post a picture of it on here) and the airborne laser i think is shot from planes (i couldnt find much about it)..but they are many advantages of using laser weapons..the laser travels at the speed of light which is 299,792,458 m/s while the speed of a bullet can travel anywhere from 300-900 m/s and the laser can be more effective because The energy output can be controlled so that if you didnt want to kill someone you could turn the energy down and just stun them and they wouldnt be able to move then arrest them..or again you could just turn the energy up and kill them..i think laser weapons would be great!!

brooks-2 said...

Insect Cyborgs
james bond hasn't even got this one yet, robotic moths that would be awsome way to spy on ppl that is of couse if you can keep it form going into the light. now they just have to make the
anti-matter bombs to go on its back and that would make assassination something a wee 3 year old could do.

Miller, J - 2 said...

reading through the posts, it seems mostly every one liked the exoskeleton, and so do I. they could really help our troops out. im a BIG fan of Halo, and if they could make a suite like Master Chiefs, it would deffinitely give us the advantage. Increased speed, strength, higher jumping abilities. and hopefully they can make it more bullet resistant. In the field, this suite would GREATYLY improve our soldiers life span. i know they are wanting to build these suites to improve on endurance and speed, but if they geared their efforts to make it like a Spartans suite, we would truly be an unstoppable force. Not only in surviving, but crushing our enamies.

vega, u - 2 said...

The laser technology in development seems really cool. Even though it's not Star Wars style "pew, pew" lasers, they could still be used to stun enemies instead of having to kill them. The personal weapons look a little bulky, maybe if they could reduce the amount of space these weapons take up every soldier you see would be carrying a laser weapon.

wilson, k - 4 said...

I think that the military robots would be a great thing to create because it would keep our guys from being on the front lines so much. We would not lose as many soldiers or have as many get wounded, and that would be great.

Haskins,T-4 said...

IM all in for the exoskeletons they are awsome they will belike super soilders out there

milo, v 4 said...

I read about "how military robts work" and i think that if we can get robots to help us deactivate hidden explosives such as IEVS and under hidden explosives then it would so lower the death toll this dirty way of fighting causes

i liked the space topic one because when i read about us shooting lasers from space in the future and i thought thats not fair at all but then it clicked to me we are Americans it wouldnt be a fair battle to any country any up against us anyways because we are straight beast so why not just do it from space it wouldnt matter ha

The "How Exoskeletons Will Work" grab my attention right away, because i think they look really neat...it will help our military a lot, but also making it easier on them for shooting and reloading.

young, j - 4 said...

Ive never been able to imagine how laser weaponry would work. now its almost possible. Not only would it be more efficcient, but it would probably be more lethal than conventional ammo. combine lasers and tanks/planes, and its pretty scary to think of the damage that those could cause. To top it off, the lasers would be so much more effective since they travel at the speed of light!

madkins, b - 4 said...

I really like the mind control chip. I think it would help a lot with the soldiers who come back with paranoia and other mental challenges. It would save a lot of lives. It would also help with physical pain caused by battle wounds. They could allow themselves not to feel pain.

fuel cells can make the most change in the ways wars are fought. electronics are big but if u can make a better fuel source for vehicles it would change war. u take out the dependence on oil and take out the private contractors that have to transport it. and dont forget about sailors, marines, and airmen

gutierrez, n - 4 said...

i think that the laser weapon will help the military because they can aim straight at the enemy without missing and its faster to shout at the enemy because you dont have to reload the gun..

vargas, k - 4 said...

When i read this article i think of Tony Stark. And then i saw that "exoskeleton" suit and it reminds me of Iron Man. I think that will be very useful. It would obviously be expensive but it would make the soilders faster and more protected. They could be very useful.

carrillo, c - 4 said...

Im going to tell you about the NLOS cannon. This type of cannon could be helpful to our soldiers because this is the one that doesn't leave any opponent alive, and this is what we want. We want to win the war.

Toth, d - 4 said...

How Exoskeletons Will Work
IS AWESOME, I WANT ONE NOW!
This suit straight up makes you a boss and i think this would help everyone, but especially the soilders, because they can runs faster, get places faster, never be lost, be super strong, can punch someones heart out if necessary, save people from certain situations, and more, i can see this being big! (ITS LIKE THE SUIT FROM GI Joe!)

norsworthy, i -5 said...

I likw the Exokeltons. I thought they were cool because it would be easier for our soldiers to get out of the way faster and they could carry bigger and better waepons to protect themselves. Its just all around great.

mejia, c - 5 said...

I chose how exoskeletons will work. I think this robotic armor would help them alot outside on the battlefield. It would help them in things that are heavy such as cars and trying to jump things as well.

velazquez, n - 5 said...

the "how exoskeletons will work" is one of the best ideas i like because it can help the soldiers in havin more ability to move and carry heavy things around and it can help us win a lot of battles

Thompson, C - 5 said...

i went to the "how exoskeleton will work" because my dads company had in fact made an exoskeleton called the HULC. Lockeed Martin had already designed a hydraulic suspension system like the howstuffworks concept art... but its real, and functional. The HULC is design to "transfer the weight from heavy loads to the ground through the robotic legs of the lower-body exoskeleton, taking the weight off of the operator. An advanced onboard micro-computer ensures the exoskeleton moves in concert with the operator."

The HULC is currently being tested in simulated battlefeild conditions, and will possibly be released to the miliary in a few short years or less.

the HULC advanced robotic exoskeleton is not fantasy, it's real. check it out at

I personally think that ALL of these ideas are a bit far fetched.. However, the mind control one would be pretty cool... you would need to find a better way to control minds though.. taking soldiers away one by one to do surgery on them seems a bit obvious and tedious.. perhaps if you could create a virus or a pill that you could get the enemy to take, then it would work.. like.. lets say that you have discovered which hormone or chemical causes depression, schizophrenia, or anything else... then you extracted that and put it into a highly concentrated pill or liquid and say, you contaminated you're enemy's water supply.. well, now you've made the enemy crazy on a larger scale.. or even a bullet coating.. sure, you aim to kill, not hurt... but people will live through being shot. well, if the coating could get absorbed underneath the target's skin and get infected, then you have a chance to infect others through germs and bio war-ware. if we didn't even have to waste our ammo on someone because they've done our jobs for us, that would quiet some protestors too.. the whole thing could the chalked up to, "well, they just simply went crazy during war.. stuff happens.."

Dude. LASERS. The development of all these different kinds of laser weapons like the PHaSR, Airborne Laser, and freaking Pain Beam far surpass the conventional bullet-based weaponry of today's wars and would give troops a pretty great advantage over everyone else in terms of precision, variety of infliction, and the elimination of carrying around bullet magazines. Aside from that, the improvement of organic life using machines is fascinating; the exoskeletons and cyborg bug spies combine the strengths of both subjects, organic and cybernetic, to make an "ultimate soldier" of sorts.

curry, b - 5 said...

I was really interested in the article about how Military Pain Beams work. I think that it is an extremely usful weapon. It barely burns the top of your skin (nerves), with no long lasting affect, which makes your body jerk away from what is causing you pain. This technology would been extremely usful driving off adversaries and it can be used when innocent people are mixed in with adversaries. I can definately see this particular weapon coming in handy in the future.

i like the one about the fuel cell i would love to have that when i get my own car or in the military i think it would be totally awesome!!!! Hey we need it now cause man gas is freakin $3 and something now

My blog is about "How Exoskeletons Will Work". This is a really cool idea, its kinda of like Iron Man but tammed down a little bit.Just imagine though how this could help the army they could be almost industructable.

brasher, k - 7 said...

the exoskeleton would help out alots. because they will be able to lift moe wight and move faster.

murphey, l - 7 said...

I chose the exoskeleton suit.

From what they are trying to do the suit will be able to make the human run twice as fast and be able to carry heavy loads also the ability to jump far

With these abilities soldiers will have higher limitations and possibly be more efficient.

i think that the military robots could save many lives so that soldiers wouldnt have to be in as much combat.

nickson, n - 7 said...

the exoskeleton can assist our soldiers doing almost anything. it would be next to impossible for enemies to run away, and the better weapons are usually the heaviest. i think this would aid the soldiers because it will be a confidence boost as well.

arnold, t - 7 said...

My attention was drawn on "How Exoskeletons Work".An exoskeleton suit for soldiers would improve the performance of many soldiers and could possibly decrese the death rate over in Iraq. The exoskeleton is said to inhance strenghth, agility and the ability to jump higher over objects. A suit like this for soldiers would give one a limitless ability to be unstoppable or even untouchable against enemies. DARPA is investing $50 million dollars into these exoskeletons, lets just hope this investment is beneficial.

i like "how military robot works". i like it because it could help them possibly stay alive longer. because they wouldnt have to go out on the battle field.

Lazer guns tech is beast if we can control it right our soldiers can weild light sabers in their hands it will be so epic. think about how precise lazers are wind cant interfere with light. i want a lazer gun now.....

ponce, j - 7 said...

Im doing my blong on "How Exoskeletons Will Work" and i thinks its a great idea that they are making these. It could save alot of people since we wouldnt hav to send the whole army some place, you could just send of few men since the suits will pretty much be able to do things alot of soldiers wouldnt be needed to do, youd probobly just send in one guy if he can lift 1000 lb like if it were 10 lb

ramirez, j - 7 said...

the U.S. Army is developing an advanced infantry uniform that way they well have greater protection and this way the soliders well be safe ...

delagarza, g - 7 said...

I liked the one about "How Military Robots Work." I think that these robots could help the military a lot ,because if you were in a life or death situation ,and you had a robot that could get the job done you would probobly send the robot than risking your life. With the robots in the military I think we would see less people die.

lanham2010-eramirez said...

I like the idea about the exoskeleton. I think that if every soldier gets one of those, more soldiers would survive, less people would loose body parts, and less people would suffer over loosing family members. I also think that this helps out because soldiers can carry more useful things when they are on missions.

morgan, d - 7 said...

The stuff over exoskeletons looked appealling to me. Having an excess of strength and endurance would never be a bad thing on the battlefield.

albro, d - 7 said...

Im doin my blog on the exoskeletons
that the government is tryin to build. To me it seems they are tryin to build an ironman which is really kool. Plus it would cut down fatalites for the men and women of our country.(GOD BLESS AMERICA, PLEASE!!!)

williams, j - 8 said...

i think the exoskelitons would be really awsome and could help the soldiers in a way that it allows them to run faster and carry heavier loads so a soldier destory a target and run away alot faster than usual

wallis, z - 8 said...

"How Laser Weapons Work"
I Feel that laser sights on military grade weapons will greatly help those in the military aim, knowing almost the precise mark of impact. The only fault is those you are aiming at will know where you are shooting from, so position will be given away quickly, but i guess that tends to happen when any weapon is fired...

matthews, j - 8 said...

From the "How Virtual Reality Military Applicants Work" article, I believe having the virtual reality simulations will be a huge help with our military. It gives them a better way to train without having them to just start them out right on the field of war. It helps them prepare themselves of real situations that could happen to them so they know what to expect. It also saves lives training them this way.

pearson, m-8 said...

I picked Lazer weapons. I think that would be good to have as a soilder because it would never need to be reloaded. I wouldn't have to carry amunition. And it would b just plain cool

hernandez, b - 8 said...

The Future Force warrior blew my mind. The military is still a strong option in my future and to think I could roll in with my unit wearing those suits is just incredible. The liquid body armor fascinates me. I had never even heard about that until now. But the one that got my loins the giddiest was the exoskeleton. Picking up 250 lbs and not even feeling it is just godlike to my mind. That's going to ensure a wounded man gets out of a hotzone as fast as possible. These concepts are just BA to be honest and if it can be deployed soon, there won't be a war we can't win.

Unknown said...

I think that the Future Force Soldier thing would be pretty legit because of the fact it gives them super strength and extra protection and with the other computer sensory in there to make them more alert would be a huge help in combat.

carter, j - 8 said...

I think that the innovation that would help the soldiers the most is ULTRASONIC MIND CONTROL. This could be beneficial because as a soldier is about to make a bad (possibly fatal) mistake in battle, a scientist could tinker with their brain to make them reconsider and make the correct decision (and not die).

stinson, m - 8 said...

i landed on the future force soldier and thought wow if they can do all this then it would improve life expectansy and we could go deeper into dangerous territory without having to worry so much that well get shot down easily...

murillo, j - 8 said...

the exoskeleton will be great. it would be just like like iron man but with an whole army of them. it will certainly help us win any wars and i also heard that it can help handicapped people do activities (such as walking)

linyard, t - 8 said...

Ultra sonic mind control? i just wish i could do that in general. imagine a soldier afraid of nothing? fearless on the battle feild. or maybe we could use on the enemy and take over their brains and make them surrender or make us delicious sandwiches. hahahah

vasquez, j - 8 said...

I thought the mechanical exoskeleton would be the most benificial to the soldiers. the reson being that well.....in my mind it looked like a huge mid air fast paced battle from Gundum....but the mind does weird things anyway.... The suit could help out with the whole problem with hand to hand combat because the biggest problem that I see is that soldiers die due to lack of amo or inexperience in hand to hand so im guessing that that will fix that. But there are also so question that I have about it. What would happen if it got wet? Is it bullet proof? Is it comfortable to wear? This is Halo for real.

"Do Wars Drive Technological Advancement?" From what i can tell, it does. Wars are obviously expensive, and are said to be pointless most of the time, but innovative thinking in the new age of technology has lead to amazing discoveries. Examples could be the microwave, GPS, cellular phones, the list goes on forever. War strategy chances the opportunity for great minds to rethink, strategize, and invent exceptional things that make life for all easier. A good and bad thing, but still innovative. Helpful to soldiers and trooos? Definately

I Liked the idea of " Whats the military (smart) fuel cell"
because it would make communication much easier and maybe we could get more things accomplished with more communication.Oh hey i like that they are very discrete.Just a thought. Plus in case of an emergency they could call somebody and get help.Less Dead Soldiers.More Wars Won.

the exoskeleton will help alot it will cut down on deaths and save alot of lives on the way i am all for that. now the laser weapon now they are cool they are helping millions now in the war i cant wait until they shoot lasers like in star track or something now that is cool and soon it will be here

i like the exoskeleton idea i kno that would help our troops out alot..itll be like u.s. power rangers haha..and the death rate probably would go down.

I really liked "how the exoskeletons will work". It is a machine that our soldiers would wear and would enhance their physical abilities like running twice as fast or jumping farther and higher. This suit would change warfare and make an average soldier...an army of one.

I read the blog "How Exoskeletons Will Work" and when I saw the picture that was on there, I thought of the movie GI Joe and how ballin' and hardcore they were with those suits, our military would be amazing if they were equipped with these things!!

The idea of the article "How Laser Weapons Work" seems like a dumb idea. It seems like Star War's geeks are trying to recreate their movie. Laser just doesn't seem reliable. Once they develop some kind of mirror armor for soldiers, then those laser weapons will be useless and just deflect. Anyways, how much will this project costs? We're already in 3 trillion dollar debt.

almeida, m - 5 said...

i read about how robots will work on military. This new idea will be very helpful for the military because if the agains team shoot a robot he wont die or no blood will come out of his body i think this will be excellent idea

The lasers will help soldiers. it helps them aim. a laser weapon would be better because it travels faster.

Myers, K-5 said...

I think that the exoskeleton suits would be a great enhancement and aid for our soldiers. I mean, if they were able to run faster and do more with their extra strength, they'd be invicible just about. Of course, it'd be great if we kept that here in the U.S. and not sell it to other countries... still waiting for everyone to set off their nuclear missles and destroy the world, hah...

hernandez, a - 5 said...

ultrasound mind control? mmm sounds kinda dangerous but if in good hands it could help the solders not get injured in battle since they will know their opponents positions and next moves

The no line of sight cannon seems brilliant. It would be extremely good if soldiers could fire on an enemy who they coudln't see, and who consequently couldn't see them
