Blog 14 12/5/11

Howdy!

So on Monday all over the news media was a story about this horiffic car crash in Japan that is possibly the most expensive car crash ever.

Go read this:

http://www.thenational.ae/news/worldwide/asia-pacific/the-worlds-most-expensive-car-crash-ferraris-mercedes-and-a-lamborghini-in-japan-collision

Which prompted me to wonder "Don't these high-end cars have safety and stabilization features that are supposed to cut down on this sort of thing?"

So for this week's blog credit YOU get to do the research. You must go out on to the internets and find an article, some published research, or something from the manufacturers website regarding the safety technology in either a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes or Toyota Prius. Once somebody has posted a link it becomes OFF LIMITS! In order to receive credit you must find your own link.

Paste the link in your comments, give us a few words of opinion, sign and submit.

We're moving on next week. I have something specific in mind.

Talk to me . . .

I'm thinking this may be a perfect example of not being able to out-engineer stupidity. You can put all the cool technology on a car that you want to, but when it comes down to it if somebody is dead set on being stupid there's not really anything you can do.

Except Prius guy. I'm sure he was driving perfectly reasonably. LOL

http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2010-lamborghini-gallardo-12.htm Is my site for the safety rateing of a 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo. It says that the Gallardo has antilock brakes (I have no clue to what these do), traction control (I guess this is suppose to help the car not to loose control), antiskid system (I have no clue as to what this does), and front side airbags ( This is no suprise because every car already has an airbag(s). These cars sound safe and everybody wants one but they really are NOT safe people. Justin-1st

This link shows the safety feature for the 2011 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. I noticed that it has standard safety features and features to prevent theft or get the car back in case of theft. However, there is nothing to really help prevent people from being stupid, other than parking assist; that wouldn't have helped very much in this situation.

People have complained about not being able to see when backing up.

"but offers no additional airbags beyond the front pair required by law"

(For A 300,000 dollar car it Just has two air bags?)

Justin, antilock brakes automatically sense when a tire has stopped rotating under extreme braking, and will modulate the brake pressure to allow the tire to rotate. This increases the vehicles ability to turn while braking. And I would assume an antiskid system helps prevent the car from skidding

ok umm 4 million dollar crash with the little prius involved. Now the saftey concerns on the other cars should be really high and able to withstand crashes like what happend, but what about the baby prius? In a crash test it showed that the saftey concerns on the regular prius are not the same as the hybrid, in which it is lower. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12582121/ns/business-consumer_news/t/how-safe-toyotas-hybrid-prius/ TUTT-1

This one of newer models and it includes a carbon fiber monocoque, innovative transmission for performance, refined and safe for all wheel drive, pushrod suspension, and has great extensive assistance. this car definitley has some safety precautions but I would not say it is all that safe because the main purpose of this kind of car is how fast can it go; people sometimes disreguard safety when looking at this car.

The Mercedes-Benzs, has top saftey innovations that one would think that only recents cars would contain. Whta is wierd is if they they had all of these thing then why would they have this chash? The Anti-lock brakes for example wouldnt the barkes work if they are are stat of the art and have been placed into this car since 1978? Another innovation that i would imagine that would work would be the Stability Control that theses cars have is uses
"sensors for fore-and-aft and lateral acceleration and deceleration all communicate in order to determine if the car is entering an out-of-control state," why would it crash? Was there evough time? Could the state of the art brakes malfunction? Teh brakes" uses sensors in the brake system to determine if the driver intends to stop quickly." Isn't this supposed to be the safest car ever because of its price?

I bet that Prius driver wishes his Pre-Collision System would have been oodles more effective.

Just in case "The Pre-Collision System is designed to help reduce the crash speed and damage in certain frontal collisions only. They are not collision-avoidance systems and are not substitutes for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as speed, driver input and road conditions. See your Owner's Manual for further information."

It sounds like something that would be effective...never.

I think this has been mentioned, but Ferrari is working on a new "mind-reading" technology that can sense the driver's bio-metric readings (heart rate, skin temperature, etc.) to determine mood and adjust settings like stability and traction. If a driver gets sleepy or startled, the car will be able to adjust itself quickly so that this doesn't cause an accident. The article notes that Mercedes-Benz has developed an alert for drowsy drivers, by Ferrari is attempting to go even further down this path to create a truly intelligent machine. I think that this is a very smart idea, especially because drivers of expensive sports cars, more than almost anyone else, want to avoid accidents as much as possible since their car is probably their largest and most precious investment.

This gives detailed (and color coordinated) information about the 2011 Prius' safety features, as well as other features. It seems fairly safe, although the "acceptable" rating for head and neck injuries is pretty disconcerting... after all, that's about the worst type of injury possible. But it has standard safety features, and users gave it a very high quality rating.

I think I would cry instantly to see all those sweet awesome cars all piled up like that...
Anyways, I am not sure if it really was the cars themselves, even though most of them are made of light metal easily damages, but the article said in itself that it is mainly young people who save up to get their dream car. i think that it could had just been the inexperienced drivers. Mostly, it is old people who have the really nice cars. Maybe it is for a reason though..
