Blog 13 11/28/11

Hiya! Thanks for logging in!

I hope everybody had a restful Thanksgiving break. Maybe we can make it to Christmas, huh?

This week I found three pretty cool articles about mobile technology to continue our car discussion. Take a look at all three of these sites, please don't just stop at the first one.

http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/thinking-tech/new-car-technology-can-stop-drunks-from-driving/6167

http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/4219496

http://www.npr.org/2011/01/31/133374309/new-car-technology-tells-tailgaters-to-back-off

I'm personally digging that NO TAILGATING technology that uses GPS and WiFi. If we could couple that with, say, the James Bond technology that spews oil onto the roadway when somebody is chasing you that would make me one happy camper.

So in order to receive credit this week you will need to choose one of the eight new technologies on one of the three websites and talk about it. How will it help us? Is it stupid, and if so why?

As always, a "that's cool" is not going to gain you blog credit for the week. You must advance the discussion in some manner.

Talk to me . . .

Me myself I really like the breatherlizer thingy in the car to start it. Because if some people go out and get wasted beyond the limit then if no ones with them they cant start their car so no harm will come to innocent drivers that night because of that person. But one problem is that who says that someone couldnt start the car for them? TUTT-1ST

The new Tailgating technology would prevent less of the thousands of aciidents we have every year. This communication system between cars i think wouldnt affect our privacy at all, heck maybe in the future the cars could start calling each other if their is a familar car nearby. Just imagein you singing down the highway and you get too into a song (Mrs. L and Lady Gaga), when there is a pileup in a few feet away? well if your car slows down or stop it, you will be able to enjoy future song and not die!!!!!!

I want to comment on two of them because one is really cute and the other is rather debatable.
The first one is the Drunk Driver thing. I think that is cool but not for everyday use. The idea about using it for people with DUI's has merit.
The second is Family Tech its super cute and useful for families that like road trips (like mine!).

I like the Hands-Off Control because some people might be driving a long trip with no pit stops or rest breaks and all of a sudden they doze off and fall asleep that Doze-Off Control would decrease the risks of wrecks

The alcohol detection system is a great idea- in theory. As the article admits, many consumers may be reluctant to buy that option on their cars. It could turn out to be more of an irritation than a life-saver. What's more, if you are a person who regularly drives drunk... why in the world would you put this in your car? Unless this was made mandatory for EVERY vehicle, I don't see it becoming very poplular.

The breatherlizer seems real smart to use to start your car but what if your friend does it for you

I think the breathalyzer device is a really clever idea because it can stop the occurance of many drunk driver-caused accidents. The fact that it will shut down the engine if too much alcohol is detected is a very smart idea. Even if someone doesn't breathe right into the sensors, their skin can be traced through the steering wheel. Overall, this would be a helpful device.

I think the Family Tech idea is really neat. It's like a child safe version of a GPS or On Star. It can keep the kids entertained so that the parents aren't distacted or annoyed by the impatient children in the back seat. Also, I think the car that can stop drunk driving is really cool. But I wonder if it will always work. Like what if someones isnt like wasted, just buzzed will it still catch that? Even though the test ran seem to always catch it, will it evertyime?

The new technology of stopping drunks from driving, in my opinion will be very helpful, so it's an automatic way of stopping whomever of driving. Since you may think you're good enough to drive, but with this technology you'll be able to tell for sure if you can or cant, and won't be able to.

I hate more than anything the annoying sun that gets in my eyes when I'm driving, so technology like the Electronis Sun Visor sure does block out that annoying sun.

I like the Hands-off Doze Control because its very useful. It could save many lifes. I like how it takes control if it feels like your drifting outside the normal range. Also the sound that warns the driver that the vehicle is drifting is very helpful. It could save many people from wrecks.

I think the car that can tell if you are drunk with the breathalizer is a really good idea. I feel like it would prevent alot of wrecks but also there is always going to be a time when it might mess up and not work. So its a chance you'ed have to make. If they could perfect it and ensure that it would never mess up then I think its a great idea.

The hands-off doze control is pretty cool. It could really help people who drive late at night and especially if they drive alone to keep them from dozing off and prevent a lot of accidents. ALthough they need to make sure that it works because I wouldn't want to watse my money on it unless it really worked.

Anonymous said...

How will it help us? Is it stupid, and if so why?
I like the tailgaiting concept. This technology will help us not crash into each other in limited visibility zones such as snow, sleet, and hail. It is not a stupid concept. This would prevent various accidents throughout the year through the GPS and Wi-Fi units. Although I am pretty down on the whole privacy aspect. They would know your every move...

Out of all of the new technology equipment i prefer the first one. I think it would be a good idea for a car to turn off or not turn on at all if it senses that the driver is drunk, which can lead to avoiding thousands of accidents everywhere.

i think the breatherlizer car is stupid because anyone who knows they drink alot will not want to near that car because half the time they wouldnt be able to drive it. on the other hand it would be a good idea if they issued those cars out to people who had a record of getting dui's so that they wouldnt be able to drink and drive.

I really like the Family Tech. The little screen to entertain the kids would be wonderful. I would play it! I love knowing how close I am to my destination when I'm not the one driving (Figuring out how much longer it'll be using mph and how far away we are is something I do constantly to pass the time) The downfall of this is that if the games get too repetitive then the kids will just get irritated and so will the driver. It'd be like hearing the same song over and over again. It'll help keep children distracted on super long car trips and they'll wear themselves out eventually.

i think that the tailgating technology is stupid because what if alerts you when it thinks theres gona be another car in front of you but therew ends up never being one.JUST SAYING that would really tick me off

I think that the hands off doze control will be more of an annoyance than anything else. In my opinion it is a pretty stupid application. I wouldn't feel safe at all with a computer driving me in the first place, and if it's going to intervene with my driving everytime it interprets me to be 'drifting'...no thanks

I think that the electronic stering is pretty cool. In the imediate future it could just save us from running off the road, but later on driving could be completly automated. You could be just sitting in your car playing cards with your family or friends while your car drives you to work.

We, with drivers liscense, have all been in the situation where we are so tierd; we might start to drift to the side a little. with the new technology that "takes control and sounds a little warning," it could save a lot of lives in the world do to drowsy driver. I also like the fact that if you have a turning signal or take hold of the steering, it will deactivate it. My problem with this is say you are driving and there is a stop sign or red light in front of you and you doze off. What could this do for you now??? All it would do is "take control" which could mean not stopping and plumiting into the back of someones car or running a stop sign and getting T-boned.

I really like the idea of the Drunk Driver thing, and I think it would decrease the chances of wrecks because of intoxication. But kind of unnecessary for everyday use. You know? Like everytime you get in the car it has to check you. I hope they find a good way to add these to cars

I think the breathalizer car system is a good and safe idea, not just to the drivers but other drivers around them.Sad to say many people will find their ways around it soon enough. It would benefit drivers with a DUI conviction to make sure they don't make the same mistake again.

I really like the child entertainment program VW came up with. When I flew to France this summer, I really liked being able to see the map of where we were and how much longer we had to fly. This would keep kids entertained while teaching them about geography and the concept of time. I think it's great that it also has games and exercises installed to keep things moving. I just hope that it comes with a headphone jack; otherwise, the little cartoon character could get very annoying to parents! I'm sure this won't be a problem, though, because this idea seems very well thought out.

Anonymous said...

i like the breatherlizer because it can tell how drunk you are. if youre too drunk the car will lock down and you cant drive. but sooner or later the drunkies will grasp the concept and get somebody else to do it, so they need to make it where the car will only take the owners breath in order for it to work

I think the Drowsy Sleeper thing would really help. I have been in that situation many of times. Nothing more scary then being tired as crap driving and the next thing you know, you open your eyes to some headlights not so far away, halfway in the opposite lane. The only downside that I could think of would be what if it messed up and you could not over power it or it just went on the fritz in general and went crazy. That would suck. But the beeping and voice informing you would be very helpful fo sho.

I really like the system to help prevent traffic congestion after an accident. If people just kept driving and sped up to let others in it wouldn't be an issue, but that's hard to do without a guidance system. Telling one car to speed up wouldn't be enough, so it's good that it would also tell the other cars when to move over.

3. Traffic Decongestion
http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/4219496
I like the idea to, instead of letting all cars slow down in the traffic flow, a car in the next lane closed lane would be told to speed up just before reaching the bottleneck. I think it would cut down on a lot more accidents on the freeway due to the one accident if it could be avoided. (: Brittany D. 1st period

The vehicle to vehicle technology does sound like it would be helpful to keep cars from piling up, however I'm more focused on the safety issue and the secrecy and privacy of people's locations. This technology is going to give others the chance to know where other people are and that could put people in danger. You never know who or what can be driving behind you, which is why overall I feel this technology is not that safe for people, but apparently they hope to make it as anonoymous as possible. I guess I can give them some credit for trying.

I think the airbags on the car should be a little softer because even if you get hit by another car the impact might not hurt you but the airbag would. Or maybe they should make cars that doesn't have an airbag but just air you know that can push an amount of air that can keep your head away from the steering wheel wouldn't that be cool or maybe they can make a car that can wake you up when your falling a sleep or when your drunk, or kick you out when you have drugs!

The tech that makes drunk drivers breathe into an breathalyzer to start there car is alittle dumb. The breathalyzer can easily beat by having someone else beathe into the breathalyzer. i think that the technology that prevents drunk driving is a good idea. It would help saves alot of lives and injuries. Except i dont really loke the fact that you have to blow into that thing to make its start. It would be a a drag to need to blow into it and what if you need to let someone borrow the car. It would be nasty blowing in to the same tube. The technology would be better if they just have the one that senses the the air or by touch.

The technology I liked was the alcohol reader. The fact that you dont have to blow into it makes it interesting and less invading. Also, this would help keep the drunk drivers off the road! I don't want to be killed by a drunk driver, and I would hate to be the drunk driver that kills someone. I'm allergic to alcohol, so this drunk driving business wouldn't apply to me. This technology would benefit everyone, saving lives everyday.

I think the child entertainment and seat in the back seat is really neat. Basically because I have seen what it's like when a parent is trying to drive and their child is throwing a fit or dropped their favorite toy, usually the parent reaches back to get it. That's an accident waiting to happen. So maybe the little t.v. with the games would be better so they could do something when waiting or when they drop their toy.
