Blog 11 - December 3, 2012

I have a confession.

I am an athlete. I know I don't look like a typical athlete, and most of the time don't act like one either. But just ask me something about my favorite hobby (triathlon) and I will launch off into a conversation that will having you begging for me to just SHUT UP FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY!

Many of my friends are also athletes, and they're all just as weird as I am. Well, almost as weird. We LOVE data. How far did we swim/bike/run? How fast were we? What was a Max speed? Average speed? Cadence (footstrikes per minute)? We chew data up and spit it back out. We analyze. We put numbers in Excel charts. We figure out what's not working and we fix it and gather some more data. In short, we're nutso.

Last year for Christmas Mr. L bought me a Garmin 910xt. It's a multisport computer that I wear on my wrist that records basically every stroke / pedal / step I take. And then it dumps the data in a program and let's me see all the results. Also? If I run the same route more than once it has a virtual racer feature where it lets me run against my previous time and shows it to me on with two little runners on a graph.

Man I love that thing.

So take a look at some of the data tools that I and my nutso friends use in our training. Read Tuesday, blog Thursday. For credit this week you will tell us which item you picked and how you would use it / why you think it's the coolest thing ever / why it's the stupidest thing ever invented.

My Garmin:

My cadence sensor:

Garmin Connect features (the 910 sends it's data here):

http://connect.garmin.com/features

Training Peaks (the software my coach sends my workouts too):

Somebody remind me here to pull up what my last week of training for the Oly looked like on TP (before I got injured).

Talk to me . . .

Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS is a good tool, i guess I would use it for excercising since thats waqs it's for. I'm not really into the whole excercising thing, but I guess it's cool, I think it's cool because of all the things that it is able to do.

I think that the virtual racer feature on the Garmin would be very useful because you always run faster when your racing against someone (even if it's a virtual representation of yourself in the past) rather than just running by yourself.

i think the garmin forerunner watch thing is pretty cool. i mean i dont particulary like running and all that but i have alot of respect for people that do. so i feel like yall deserve something that can help you keep track of all the stuff hat you do. the only thing that i think is kinda cray cray is the price, but i mean hey if you are running on a daily basis then you deserve something nice.

This right here is straight up swag. Not S.W.A.G. "Someone had a hard time understanding that last time". But this is pretty swag because it can check your heart rate and swag stuff like that. So in my final decision, this is straight up swag no doubt about it.

I like the Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS Heart Rate Monitor because I love to swim and this watch measures swimming distance, identifies strokes and tracks strokes and pool lengths. The GPS also captures the path you travel while swimming in open water so you can analyze it later to help improve your technique.

I choose the 910XT. the reason i choose this is because if the doctor or trainer puts you on a workout that they think you need to do then they could keep track of what you do and mabey think of ways to change and improve the workout.

I like the Garmin Forerunner the best. i think its amazing that that little thing can do so much and keep up with all the data it collects. It would be the best tool for someone who does triathalons. But the price is a little much.

The Garmin Forerunner seems like a very nifty device, using its technology to track all your strokes, pedals and jumps appears to be a very usefull tool for athletes everywhere. I would use it to calculate how fast and how far i have ran, as well as how many steps i have taken in the course.

Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS Heart Rate Monitor

I really think it is cool that you can see your previous time on a certain course to beat it or you can see other peoples time on that course so you can have a goal to beat them.

I think the Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS Heart Rate Monitor is really cool because it allows you to compete against a static pace that you set before heading out for your run. You go faster when you race someone (or something). Also its impressive the amount of different things it is able to do. I mean it better be something incredible if you spent $450 for it.

The garmin 910xt forerunner is the coolest thing ever invented because it can be used for any of the sports that you love and do or all of them at the same time like Mrs. L. whenever she does her triathalons. It automatically sends your stats straight to the software it needs which can be monitored by you or your trainer.
