Blog 12 - December 10, 2012

Continuing the Fitness Technology topic . . .

I think it's fun to talk about fitness technology, because of my aforementioned inner athlete who is struggling to get out. I'm sure some of you are over it already. Hopefully we'll hit a technology topic at some point that will peak your interest.

Hey . . . here's a question: Do you think all this technology makes us better at exercising? For me, it's makes me more EFFICIENT, but at the end of the day (don't you hate that term?) it's all about moving more and eating less. And no amount of technology in the world will make that happen if I choose to be a slug and sit in the corner of my couch eating like there's no tomorrow and watching Real Housewives reruns.

Not that I would ever do that . . .

So here are your sites for this week with up and coming exerice technology. For credit this week, you will have to do TWO things: 1) tell me your opinion about technology in exercise. Is it making us more fit and healthy? and 2) pick a product on one of the following pages (remember to tell us which one) that you would use and talk about it intelligently. Tell us how you would use it. Tell us why it's a great idea. Tell us why it's goofy. Tell us some facts about the product.

As always, read Tuesday blog Thursday. If you can't answer BOTH of my questions I can't possibly give you credit this week. Always READ MY WORDS and follow the instructions.

Talk to me . . .

I think technology is definitly making excercising healthier. For the people that love technology the best way to get motivated is by using technology while excercising. The product that I chose is Jawbone Up, it tracks how many steps you take, the distance you walk/run, and how long you sleep. I think it's cool how it does not even look like a gadget, it is slim and flexible, giving it more of a bracelet type look.

i think that technology in exercise is convenient because it allows you to keep track of your progress, but i don't think it has anything to do with how much work you do, i think that that's totally up to yourself. the exercise equipment that i chose this week was the fitbit ultra because its relatively cheap and very wearable...and stylish!

I think that using technology when you excersize is a good idea because it helps to motivate you. I think that the nike+ fuelband is a good idea for some people, but it would drive me insane because I can't stand to wear loose jewelry when I run.

I think technology is great for exercise, it really makes keeping track more efficient. I really like the Nike+Fuelband, I think it's really neat how it keeps track
of your activity by means of a triaxial accelerometer, and uses an array of embedded LEDs to help you switch functions and navigate menus. If I did run, I would use it to keep track of different run times.I really like the look of the bad and the LEDs on it to let you know you're changing functions.
The Fuelband has survived showers, heavy rain, and dog washing.

I think that technology today is definately a big factor in healthy eating and exercise and is making things a lot more efficient. The item I chose is the The Jawbone up because it is a bracelet that stays charged up and tracks all of your movement. It carries a higher USB charge and is an awsome tool.

I choose the fitbit product. It clips onto your clothes and tracks your daily activities by recording how many steps you take, how many calories you burn, etc. Technology doesn't make us fit or health on its own. We have to get up off our butts and move. The tech just makes it easier.

I think technology in exercise is making people more healthy and fit. I chose the Electric Foxy Move. For some people like myself, don't like running, jogging, lifting, or anything in that category. This goes best for something like Yoga. Its a shirt that send vibration feedback by the way of your posture.

My opinion about technology in exercise is that yeah it makes everything easier like calculating the distance or even checking your heart rate. talking about measuring heart rates the Nike Fuel band is great in my opinion, it has the ability to read and track your heart rate as well as distances.

I agree that technology makes excercise more efficent to and extent. I think that being that you can monitor your exercise to the very smallest amount. The product I chose was the Valencell PerformTek. Most people use music to pump them through a workout ,so it would be an easy transition for it to also measure all of the things that you would need to help you.

Technology doesn't make anyone more "healier/active" You can sit there with any device and not benefit anything. Unless you have the power plate, that helps you lose cellulite by doing nothing! cool! in contrast, how realistic is it to lose something by doing nothing? goofy. But, technology may motivate you (music) or calculate what you have to do to get to a certain destination.

I believe that technology in exercise is helping humanity. We are now able to keep track of all our daily activities. A good example of fitness technology is the Nike Fuel Band. It is able to track clip on like a braclet and track your activities. The only disadvantage is it's somewhat inconsistant.

I think technology does help people with their fitness. Now I'm not trying to say that it helps people loose weight but I do think it helps people who are trying to be more efficient and trying to get all they can out of a work out. So thats why I think that the ElectricFoxy Move shirt thingy could be a very practicle item to have if your more of those people who want to get as much as they can out of a workout. The shirts cool cause it has sensors in it that vibrate when your body is in the wrong posture. I cant tell you how many times my coach has yelled at me during drylands because I am doing my workouts wrong. Something she always says "It doesnt matter how many you do. Its the quality of what you are doing that is going to make you stronger" which is true! So a shirt that will help you do the excersize wrong seems like it would be a brilliant idea!

I think that technology in fitness is helping us cheat when it comes to health and fitness. All it does is make it quicker for us to build muscle or burn fat even if it may not make your entire body stronger or be as healthy as it says it is. Basicly all these advancements have blinded alot of people to where they dont know what real fitness is.

Marisol Alvarado- 7th I think that technology isn't nesessarily making us more fit and healthy, like you said, I think it's just making us more efficient. Take the MotoACTV for example,(the product I chose) it can track your location and keep tabs on your heart rate and activity level. It uses a built-in GPS to determine the distance traveled during runs or bike rides, and sensors to measure the calories burned during any workout. This watch can do so much to HELP us become healthier, but it can't MAKE us. You can set up a bunch of alarms on your special workout watch to remind you to go run, but that doesn't mean you can't just ignore those alarms and go eat a burger instead. I do think that technology is HELPING us, but I don't think it's MAKING us more fit and healthy. I chose the MotoACTV because it's small, portable, and can do so many little yet cool things like
store and play MP3′s, send text messages, check for weather updates, and the other cool things I mentioned before. I would definitally use this when I go ruuning in my neighborhood.
