Discussion 21 - 2/9/09

Thanks for logging in!

As the district is cracking down on students who are streaming video (and downloading music!) it got me to thinking about the way we watch TV and how that is changing. This week I would like to discuss this emerging trend of watching television shows and movies on the web. I personally know somebody *coughcoughRAYcoughcough* who gets up early the day after his favorite TV show airs to watch it on the 'net.

So I found this CNN article that I PRAY is not blocked:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/02/06/internet.tv/index.html

Read this through on *Tuesday.* Wait to blog until *Thursday.* Think about it a sec. Do you think that cable providers should be scared? Do you think we will be moving towards more web content? Let me know.

And for the love of all that is sacred, PLEASE do not click on the link that says "How to watch TV on the internet"!!!!!!! LOL

to me is a good and bad idea. because the people in the show get paid by the commercials, but in the internet we might not have any commercials at all. but it might be a good idea because we can watch TV. on the road and not miss any episode of our favorite tv show. and it is cheaper.

We were already consuming a good portion of content online, and a quick survey of media sites allowed us to determine if those shows we were most interested in watching could be online,'' Corey Wynsma said. As more Americans get used to watching video on their computers, more web sites are popping up to offer free movies and tv shows.

We have seen alot of stuff geting evented in america. something i have to asked how to they do it? I meen it looks like its fun but i would like to see what they go through to get from were ever they started from.......! i don't think cable providers have to worry about it, at least not any time soon even though now days it could be endlessly convienent people have become to accoustomed to sitting on a couch with a remote in their hand and just flipping through the channel people are just to lazy

Johnson,O-2 said...

I don't think they should be scared because I personally would rather sit on the couch and watch a movie with my boo then sit at the computer and watch a movie. It just makes people more isolated when they're at their computer then with people

well i think watchig tv on internet is a lot better thatn watching tv on a real tv and its a lot cheaper to watch tv on internet atleast u don't get bothered by stupid commercials!!

Sauceda, Maria=]- 6 said...

WOw i actually watch videos on hulu!!..But its isnt that great since the amount of tv episodes are limited like the simpsons and the office..Um i would still keep my cable and just watch the episodes i miss on the internet..

Meredith,B-6 said...

Honestly I think it's a pretty good idea but also a bad one mainly because the movies online are usually free and stuff but then they arnt technaclly yours and your cant take them anywhere you want that might not have internet not to mention going to movie theaters is a great past time especially in NAC cuz incase u didnt notice there isnt much to do here and if movies start getting put all on the internet there wont be that option anymore

Copeland, Juston7 said...

i think that cable providers dont have to worry that much its just the convience of what u have at the moment if u have internet and no tv then u watch internet and vice versa but for me im use to watching the internet instead of the tv

Maness, J-6 said...

i think its a bad idea to do things such as cancel cable or satellite subscriptions, even though i honestly cant remember the last time i watched a full episode of a tv show. i do in fact just watch my shows on internet sites such as hulu. but still, for live events such as superbowl or the inaugeration, i do watch tv as opposed to the internet.

brittain,w-2 said...

i think that cable providers should be scared because more and more people watch movies and shows on their computer. personally i think that downloading your favorite movies/shows on your computer is better because u dont have re-runs and you can watch them anytime if they are on your computer. normally after i watch a movie/show i convert it to put it on my ipod or convert it while i watch the show/movie.

I watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force at three am when I can't go to sleep, which is often, but I would prefer to watch it on the television.
Whenever I wacth it on the internet, it takes awhile to load, and then you have to pause it or else its all choppy and what not.

I just prefer TV so much more.

Thompson,O-1 said...

my parrents watch tv on the internet all the time. its great. i dont watch tv at all but they do alot. they should air more tv shows on the internet more often so you can watch them whenever you want.

Jones,C-1 said...

Cable providers really dont have anything to worry about. At least for now. Although many people might think that watching tv programs on the internet would be more convenient, most people would just rather watch it on tv simply because they have been doing it their whole lives.

Liles, T-1 said...

Well i guess as long as our technology is advancing as it is, then things like TV are gonna be more and more accessible anywhere, eventually we'll be getting TV "on-the-go" with our cell phones. If you think about it in a more futuristic perspective like i do than you realize things like "hulu" and "veoh" aren't that innovative, you tube has been doing it for years.

martines,j-1 said...

i think that if its gonna happen its just gonna happen, but i would rather sit at a couch watching a big screen tv than sitting at a desk looking at a screen half the size.

Rigsby,D-1 said...

For me i think that it would help both people.I really think it could help them air some shows that they think that would never would air on the T.V. I also think with the lag thing will not be a problem, reason is if everyone is going to do it then they would work on that lag problem. I dont think it would be a problem with neither cable or internet

Tri-Edge said...

I really like this idea. The internet is the main entertainment of today's youth and they like TV but their parrents usualy make them chose one or the other. So if TV was available on the internet everyone can watch what they want to.

Gilbreath,J-1 said...

Hmm...Hey, I've seen this type of technology before! It's called YouTube...Yeah, bad joke, sorry.

Anyway, the thought of TeleVision slowly turning over to NetVision is actually making me think we're advancing more toward mankind, and less toward World War III, which is great!

Like Forest Gump once said, "That's all I have to say...about that."

Hollingsworth,C-1 said...

Watching video online could be a burden for live things like the guy said. My computer has way to much crud on it to watch things on the net, i bet more people than just me have this problem. TV will always be there for people with cruddy computers.

Broadway,M-1 said...

Watching tv on your is great and all, but it has some drawn backs.
slow connections and bad service are some. but on the good side their be cheaper, more open for use.

McCorvey,T-1 said...

Well,i think that most of the tv shows come on tv first, and then they play re-runs on the internet. But, i would rather relax and watch a movie on my flat screen, than on the laptop.

rodriguez,stephen-1 said...

I could sit all day and type up all the pros and cons about this but this is what i think about it in a nutshell. This is good idea for people who are struggling to "stay afloat" in this economy i personally like to watch my show and movies in HD and in a 42in screen but thats just me. For the struggling people out there working their butts off that dont have time to watch their favorite shows this can help them.

mcgown,a-1 said...

I believe that the internet will not "emolliate" the cable TV industry, but I feel strongly that it is going to be a complementary entity. The reason I believe that the internet industry is going to be complementary with the cable industry is because the economic definition of complementary good/ services are ones that go hand in hand, and when the price of one good declines the other will follow suite, or when one rises the other will do the same. The ironic part is that most major cable companies offer high speed internet and cable packages. The only thing that should worry the cable providers is the fact that for some people the internet has replaced television as a whole. In my case, I barely turn the TV on in my leisure time spending most of my time browsing and communication. Also, cable has set times for show, and this should be a concern because many people do not have a schedule that always permits them to watch their favorite show. The easiest thing for them (most tend) do is buy the season on DVD, iTunes, or watch episodes online. My main concern is how these were not point of interest in the article.
To sum things up, TheLaw of Demand is the best example of the relationship between the cable providers and internet. If they were thinking economically, they would invest more in the internet portion of their companies.

I think its cool to watch your favorite tv show on the internet...because like CALDERON said you can watch tv on the rode

Baker,M-1 said...

I think in the long run, watching TV on the internet would be better because its cheaper and more easily accessable. I don't normally watch my shows on the Internet (maily because I have the TV scheduale for my show memorized). But its not something i am completely opposed to and probably will do it a lot in college (because, like a car or motor cycle, I'm not getting a TV as a graduation present)

mayfield,s-1 said...

I think that its good that we can watch things on the internet, because you can go back and look at things that you have missed, so you wont have to wait for them to come on, or you can just look at the shows or anything else for fun.Sometimes you can see things before they come on televison.

I think that cable providers should be scared because they could lose alot of money if people decide to just watch online. people already stay on the computers anyway .

packard,a-2 said...

to me the negatives out weigh the positives. sure there are not any comercials and the cost is great but alot of the shows i watch you couldnt get on the web and i like watching my tv from my bed and not from a little computer screen that could freeze during the climax of the show. also, i love the dvr that i can record shows and movies on when i'm at school so i wont miss them. and it's alot more simple to turn on the tv than finding a place that shows your favs on the web.

Davis,J-2 said...

i think its a bad idea because i do watch tv not every day but i watch it when i get a chance tv is very interesting that why i think its a bad idea to cancel it. Its lots of important thing that be on tv that i like to see and other people like to see.

Dietrich,R-3 said...

If you could watch T.V. on the internet it would be cool but would be bad... because if this happen then what if the internet crashes..... what would happen to the T.V.... why... why would they let that happen to tee vee!!! itss horribal :(

i don't think tv is going anywhere. i can't speak for anyone else but i've watched tv shows on the computer and its jus not the same. maybe one day in the distant future when computers have advance beyond imagination this will happen.

robles,l-3 said...

its a realy dificult choice. if there was no more cable then the cable companies will need to focuse in other things. and some companies will need to close. but the good thing is that internet TV is cheaper and better for the people because they can have it anywhere they go. i dont think that the cable companies need to wory about it now but there is going to be a point in time that it is going to be a big issue.

Cable providers don't have much to worry about in the immeadiate or near future yet. Sure, it's cool to watch tv episodes online, but most computers only have a 15 inch monitor and relatively slow internet connection to stream videos with good quality. So, right now computers aren't
high-tec enough to handle any live tv stream; some can't even stream a video from YouTube. However, technology will advance and open up the possibility for most people to stream live television on their PC.

cruz,raymond,a-class3 said...

i hate that you can watch tv on the internet it defeats the purpose of having a tv, id rather just watch it on tv.sometimes when you try to watch shows on the web,you waist your time becuse sometimes it skips or it takes forever to load.its just a huge waist of time.

tutt,matthew said...

Cable providers should not worry about the internet taking over their market any time soon. In most cases internet is not a beter way because it, in some places, avalable for people in high speed and most shows are posted after the show has aired on tv.

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

I personally say its a horrible idea for numerous reasons. 1.) Why would you go through the effort of turning on the computer which takes up like 3 minutes. 3 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE, THAT COULD HAVE BEEN USED TO GET YOUR SELF A SNACK!! OR BETTER...THE REMOTE FOR THE TV!! ITs all good for watching your missed episodes of "House" or "CSI: Miami" but watching something continually on the computer is too much effort. Also watching ahead is good if your show comes on only like once a week and you have free time but think about the things you could be missing if you were channel surfing. What if you missed some life altering fact that could make you a billionaire or save your life in the near future if only you were not on the computer! And what if your internet service crashes. Yeah, didn't think about that now did you. Old fashioned tv is good.

I believe that it does not matter if the show is on TV or on the internet as long as the show is still being distributed by the broadcasting company.

Broadcasting Companies get their money through advertising. They can still do that on a website. They could make it so that every 10 minutes while you're watching your favorite show, it pauses and then plays some ads. This is actually opening up a whole new world of advertising. The internet advertising will slowly creep in with the TV ads.

Cable providers should be scared... but probably in 5 years or more until they are hit big. The ones that should be scared are not the ones that sell all cable utilities such as Sudden Link... We are still buying their internet and possibly using more bytes to earn them more money.

I don't personnaly watch much tv on the internet. But with some of my favorite shows like "It's Always Sunny In Philidelphia" (which dosen't come on at all anymore) I have to watch on the internet to see any episodes. But besides that i would much rather just watch it on the tv.

its a pretty good idea becuase people get busy and have to miss thoes shows that they are attached to! like me! haa but i dont think the cable companies shoud have to worry that much becuase most people watch tv even if there shows arent on. Tv will last forever =)

borerw-4 said...

i don't think cable companys should be worried about tv on the internet because there are plenty of people who don't have computers to watch it on, like me.

taylor, Q - 6 said...

ok i think the idea isnt something for them to worry about.i mean we would have to watch tv first to get the show, because the internet show either re-runs, or parts of shows not shown on tv...i really dnt know its just not that big of a deal

edwards, a - 4 said...

I think it's a good idea. The good news is if you miss your favorite t.v. show, then you can just watch it online. Some shows don't show re-runs. Even if they do, they run it way early in the morning or late late in the night.

Cuarenta,A-6 said...

i think the cable providers should be very scared... because most people are into the newest technology and some just look for an excuse to use it... well it is pretty cool how u wouldnt have to go by a schedule on the tv by when YOU have free time to watch your favorite shows...

Bixler,T-6 said...

I think that watching your television on the net is cool, but it can be very dangerous at the same time. As you up load the show it can send a virus that is un detectable and a hacker can still what ever he wants.

Trikosko, M-1 said...

I don't think the internet will take over televison any time soon. There is only a limited number of televison shows on the internet and it is more comfortable to watch video on the couch. But in the future the two may become one.

lee, s - 7 said...

because the people in the show paid in internet who might not have any commercials at all. The people watch favortie show CSI: Miami. Maybe watch on a computer.

I think that having a t.v on the internet is reall good idea it defeats the purpose of having a tv...and a lot of times when you download the shows into your computer it takes along time and is just waisting your time....and also sometimes when you download your computer might get a virous!!!!!

arnold,t.7 said...

i think its a bad idea because the people on the commercials is getting paid and that dont need to be mess up. Internet may not be good cause they might not show the commercials on there. So i would like the tv show.

Lopez, M-1~☺ said...

Personally, I think the cable companies will probably lose their company. People seem to like the internet more than the tv since the internet has everything. Even though they are alike, cable people will gradually dissappear.

arriola,brett-1 said...

i thinks its a good idea because what if u have to miss an episode you can jsut watch it the day before.!

Cole,R-1 said...

That was once, when I missed it because of a Band Concert, but I do use the net to find out about different shows, because I don't like jumping in, in the middle of a season, and most of the time i can start from the beginning on the net.

Cable providers shouldn't be too scared. At least until the people who actually use their televison to watch shows, actually shrinks to a extremely tiny amount. Of course more content will be moving toward the web, most stations are starting to show episodes of shows on thier website after it airs on television, and that is a welcome change.

villanueva, manuel, N. 1 said...

I think its a bad idea, i like watching tv on my 60inch plazma tv.

och,s-4 said...

Although more and more people are starting to watch shows and movies online - I must admit that I have done that on a few occasions - I don't think that cable providers should be scared anytime soon. When more people start to get the capabilities of hooking their computers up to their tvs and can watch shows from the internet on their tvs, it will be a bigger deal. But for now I can't see the amount of people switching to internet showings of their favorite shows causing too much of a decrease for providers.
