Discussion 23 - 2/23/09

Thanks for logging in!

A couple of weeks ago, Google launched GoogleEarth which allows you to look at the ocean space on the earth just like you can search street addresses on land. In some cases you can even see below the surface of the water. It's pretty incredible, really. Even for those of you who aren't nerds.

This past week, someone thought they found the lost city of Atlantis on there. Below are links to the article and also to a blog about the "find."

Tell me what you think about Google Earth. Will you use it? Is it just a cool toy? Tell me if you think the lost city of Atlantis will ever really be found.

Talk to me . . .

Google earth is a great new toy i use it alot but i think its getting out of hand because now its a new GPS and use it to track your friends....creepy much?
The whole atlantis thing is pretty cool and (as embarrassing as it is) I was one of the hyped up believers when i first heard about that i was jumping up and down saying "I knew it!!!" but i believe its down there somewhere waiting to be discovered

I’m really indifferent about Google Earth, because I have not experimented with it yet. I have, though, experimented Google maps and I think it is fairly fun to play around with. I am, for the most part, pretty excited when technological advances are made. On the other hand, I am not convinced that the "Lost City of Atlantis" was found using Google earth. The search for the "Lost City" has been going on for years, and I not convinced that it has not been found using Google Earth. If there is a "Lost City" it may be found, some day, but I doubt it will be possibly sitting at home on the pc. Google Earth is really cool, and a great toy. I may use it, but I am pretty sure I will not be looking for Atlantis.

That is Not Atlantis, It is sapose to be near greece or maybe somwhere near england because of Bath but off the coast of affrica? No. Its not atlantis.

i might use google earth but its not in my biggest intrests.and for atlantis it could be anywere in earth(not just near greace) it could be under water or it could be buried under miles of volcanic soil.

Google earth is a pretty cool toy and the idea that found Lost City of Atlantis is pretty fun if you think of it. All the people looking for it and a accident finds it. I bet if it is the city, people are going to be slapping them selves.

Well of course ill use google earth, but im not paying for it, ill just pirate it. But i think what ever that was that was found on google earth is way to much of a coincidence to just be nothing. Even it its not Atlantis, maybe a ship wreak thousands of years old, but either way i think that scientists should definantly check it out, because reguardless of what it is, it has genuine historical value.

McCorvey,T-1 said...

Well, i think that google earth is a great thing to play around with exploring different cities, and states were you, and others live. But i don't think that Atlantis was found.

Gilbreath,J-1 said...

Oh, yay! Somebody found Atlantis...Who cares? It's a city that used its own power the wrong way and payed for it by sinking below the waves. Woop-dee-doo...

As for Google Earth, it allows you to see into the ocean. What exactly is the point of that!? It's absolutely useless, unless you're looking for the place where you dumped your Uncle Dave's ashes.

Calderon,A-1 said...

i will not believe it until i see a better picture of this "Atlantis" it might be true because i read on the internet that Atlantis sank in many parts of Western Europe and Africa. in the Atlantic Ocean so it might be true but i will not believe it until i see i better picture of it or somebody go underwater and look for it just like the TITANIC.

arriola,brett-1 said...

Google earth is a cool new toy that you can use to look at things all over the world. Also i do not think that that is atlantis and i do nto think anyone will ever find it because it does not exist.

A uk-based aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford has claimed to the sun that he had seen on Google Earth a grid of lines undersea off the coast of west Africa about 600 miles west of the canary Islands, a location which experts where Atlantis had sunk. Google is officially denying widespread Internet rumors that its Google Earth software located sunken city of Atlantis off the coast of Africa.

Atlantis was this supposed ancient city that submerged into the ocean.
As an avid watcher of the Discovery channel, the TRUE Atlantis would be located near Italy or Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea.
The picture the lucid British man found is just some lines on the ocean floor. How he got Atlantis out of that, I don’t know. How millions of people believe its Atlantis, I HAVE NO EARTHLY IDEA. It doesn’t even look anything like a city.
People need glasses and a little more education.

Google earth is really cool. I'll use it when im bored. Now this Alantis stuff...well it would be really cool if they found it and this was it. But I think the guys at google know how there data is collected so it could be from the boats...but then that brings the question why arent there lines like that in other places?

Tri-Edge said...

I'll admit it has some interesting aspects but don't you think that the terrorist could use this to spot our bases over there? I think google Earth is irresponsible with this program.

allensworth, z-2 said...

i think the google earth is pretty stinking crazy i'm not really sure if i believe it or not it'd be pretty dang spiffy if they did but if not, i wont need to see a pshyce but the whole concept is cool

brittain,w-2 said...

I think Google Earth is one of the coolest programs out there, i mean come on, how cool is it to search for other people using a birds eye view? on the other hand, i think Atlantis will one day be found. That might be Atlantis because the way google explained it sounded like they didn't want anyone to know about it. They had a corny excuse about to boat using sonar and that the outline was the paths the boat took, but i very highly doubt that.

I think google earth is kind of cool. I think I would use this new toy. I had no idea google found the Lost city of Atlantis I had no ideas it found those othe places either this toy will be great for scientist to use.

Dietrich,R-3 said...

If its real it will be found but i want to know what lives down their... i mean there will either be cool fish or something. Its like a different world down there

Hernandez, Ruben 3rd said...

i think is awesome i would use if i knew how to..it would be so awesome to find something in the ocean..

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

Man, Google earth is flippin awesome. No you don't have to get out of your house to find specific directions to a certain place you wanna go. Its so freakin cool that you can go that in depth when you want to find a place. No more struggling for just trying to find a simple road. I wonder if I can find my house from here. Oooo, what about the school. See if anyone is here. Thats so cool.

GOogle earth is an AWESOME map. I had always wondered what Atlantis was!!!!... Hm i wonder if its true or this guy just had to much time in his hands. Anyways i like google earth its interesting and you are able to find anything.

Maness, J-6 said...

google earth is just a cool time waster, in my opinion, and i cant find any reason for the average person to need to use google earth. also, i think thisissand.com is much more fun. and i don't think atlantis really exists, so its not possible for it to be found.

lee, s - 7 said...

Did Google earth is new? Did Google earth find atlantis? I never believe that atlantis in Google earth. I think it is the Lost City of Altantis. I through Altantis is in the ocean far away.
I never believe that Google earth find atlantis in the ocean. Who are the one to find Altantis in the ocean?

arnold,t.7 said...

i dont like the fact of the Google Earth right know so i dont knkow what to said, because i have no experimented on it yet.

Lopez, M-1~☺ said...

Google Earth eh?
Sounds interesting but then again I have not tried it out yet. It perhaps maybe used in geography class for a project but just a random is ok for me too. I'd maybe use it if I as ever really bored or something but it could be useful for scientist trying to discover something amazing. Not so sure about the Atlantis thing. It could be a myth that people made up back in the day. Who knows? It could be real.

Google earth is pretty stinking cool - im not sure if i will use it for anything other than just to play around with but thats ok.
if there is an atlantis - im sure it will be found - with or with out google earth. woop woop.

I like the way they used the earth but i thought it was the moon, but its pretty cool how they are useing the earth as the to show everyone one something that everyone should know. It's how they are looking at the earth but I dont think it is a good idea to do something like that. But then again it's ok because it tells you how the the earth is doing.

Adams,B-2 said...

i thank dat goole earth is great....u can get a lot of direction on there....and now it even shows ur house and every thing

anderson,p-3 said...

i have google earth on my phone and to me it just a cool toy. i dont really use it for anything important. if there really is a lost city of atlantis then im sure that it will be found one day.

cruz,raymond,a-class3 said...

i think the google earth sounds pretty cool but im not to big on on that kind of stuff. i mean its cool and all that they might have found the lost city of atlantis, but to be honest, it could be anywhere, not just near greace, but i think google earth can come in handy.

chanelectronic said...

i think google earth is trippy - on a personal basis. now on a realistic, professional basis.. i'm kinda indifferent about i haven't really used it to locate something other than Mr. Veasey's home (YES! It's really on there!)

Furthermore, I really think that the city of Atlantis won't be found. There's too much hype going on about it. Plus it's truly 100, thousand leagues under the sea. We'd have to A. pump out the ocean or B. come up with some new technology that allows use to dive deep, deep, D E E P into the ocean floor and start looking.

google earth is so so so cool. i didn't know you could go under water though thats cool to. but you can do the same thing on google maps.

Brice, R-4 said...

Google Earth is pretty cool. I wouldn't use it that much but it would be fun to mess around with if you got bored. As for Atlantis its gonna take a while yet to find it but i bet its possible.

Google Earth is a pretty interesting program and fun to use when you want to just burn some time away.....but it's incredible what all they've uncovered using it and I must say the google guys must be really bored to have the time to do all that exploring and programing

i have used google earth before and its cool i think that to be able to use the satellite or whatever like that is cool i think that the the city of atlantis will be found it that is not it though

Bixler,T-6 said...

I think that it is very cool to use. It could be used to see manynew palces and things that no human can go yet. I think yes it really is just a toy but a toy that can do some good things I thnk sooner or later the Lost City of Atlantis will be found but I dont think it will be this soon.

Byrd,N-6 said...

Google earth is a really fun tool and i think they really did find a sunken city, mabey not atlantis, but I still think they found something down there and thier just making a cover up so no one else will get the buried treasure but im to smart for them so if anybody ask they didnt find anything (wink) but if you want to find the treasure the freedom fighters meet under a bridge on tuesdays.

Google Earth is just a cool toy. The government does not need it becuase they have better and more up to date satellite imagery almost on demand. I probably won't use it because it does not interest me that much.

Whenever the lost city of Atlantis is found, I'll be sure to watch the history channel documentary on it. It will take more than a Google Image to find the city.

Google earth!!!...hummm it sounds pretty cool but am not really a big fan of that...but i think that it comes handy...even all that if they found the lost city of atlantis--haha...but yea there are people that are fanatics of that stuff!!!

I have used Google Earth, it's pretty cool. It can be uesd for directions, but the most fun that comes from it is looking at your own home or places you know. Other than that Google Earth is just a big toy. Also I don't think Atlantis (if it exists) will be found in my lifetime.

mayfield,s-1 said...

I only use google earth when im bored, or just want to have fun with it, its really neat.I believe one day that Atlantis will be discovered.

You see here since i have a iphone that mean goolge earth is on my phone right in fornt of me. So yes i would use it and i have already have use it off my phone.

Jones,C-1 said...

Google Earth is pretty amazing. I thinkg that i could be used for way more than just a toy. who knows what someone might find just randomly searching around the ocean or cities. and if the lost city is real, it will be found one day and google earth is only going to increase those chances of finding it

Ashley Manis said...

Tyler only uses Google Earth to stalk me.

Cole,R-1 said...

I probably won't use Google Earth much at all, maybe every once in a while just for the fun of it. The city of Alantis will probably be found, but the idea that a something such as google earth would be the reason it's found is a little out there

packard,a-2 said...

i think that this would be helpfull for people looking for lost ships and reck sites and planes and stuff, but the lost city of atlantis is just that, LOST!!!! if it wasnt lost it would just be some dumb place that has turned into a underwater hotel/tourist attraction and that would suck because it's better to imagine the unknown than to smash it down with post cards and t-shirts and guys with short shorts, flowery shirt, sunscreen, and accent, and a continuously flashing camera. i want it to remain lost, it's better to have a mystery.

taylor, Q - 6 said...

ok honestly the website is alright, but i wouldnt use it.It is cool that a city can be found because of the site though.

Cuarenta,A-6 said...

i have not used "Google earth" yet.. i just hasn't come up but when i do i'm sure i'll find it useful..
the thing about "the lost city of atlantis" why has it taken so long to find??? with all the new advancements in technology you would think that it would have been found years ago??!!!

Google Earth is a great tool for people looking for visual direction. It needs to be limeted on what it can see because it seems a little stalkerish. I, however, think you can discover things with it like Atlantis because of how in depth the view is.
