Blog 6 - 10/12/09

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

In the next few weeks I'd like to talk about cell phones. This week I'd like to take a look at some new cell phone technology coming our way. Next week we will watch a TED video from David Pogue, who is the technology reviewer for the New York Times. Then the week after that I'd like to have a discussion about how cell phones can be integrated into the classroom.

And no, this does not give anybody permission to whip out their cell phones for any reason!

Ya know, these devices are supposed to be making our lives easier. Is yours? Are you using it to it's potential?

This past year I updated my cell phone to a Samsung Epix with a full data package. I did this after Chris Brophy came in and showed me his sparkly new Epix and I immediately caught this horrible disease called Cell Phone Envy. I *had* to have that phone. It was touch screen, AND it had a stylus and touch keyboard, AND it had a touch-sensitive mouse in the middle! So I went and got myself one. I had to have it in my hands all the time at first. It was like that feeling you get when you get a new car . . . you just wanna be in it all the time.

And now . . . meh. It's just a phone, ya know? Several times I've used my phone to find directions when we're driving around the big city and that's been pretty cool. Mostly I use it to update my Facebook status and check the status of my friends. Could I live without that? Yeah. Do I want to ? Not so much.

Anyway, take a look at those links for new cell phone technology. I guarantee at least one of them won't work from the school address, but give them a try anyway. Pick a new phone and tell my why you'd spend your money on it. OR pick a new cellular technology and tell me how it would benefit you. OR respond to someone else's post regarding new cell phone technology. Either of these things will earn you a 100. "That's cool" will not.

Talk to me . . .

I like the Smartstart iphone application because since most people spend most of there time on thier cell phones anyways you might as well have this app that can lock and unlock your car, arm and disalmarm your car, pop the truck, and fire of the annoying alarm...Say for example if someone tried to be slick and steal your keys to jack your car, you could pull out your cellphone to lock it, which to keep, him/her out you would prolly have to push it many times. But you could make the alarm to go off and he/she would either run away or get busted...i would so get one..if i had an iphone :(

smatstart thing is really cool. its great and you dont even have to keep up with your keys anymore... all fun and games until you lock ur phone in the car, right? then who is the idiot now, huh? and u cant even call anybody for help!!!!!!

the power mat is awesome. its cool that u can sit ur phone on it and it will charge. now u wouldnt have to worry about cords and what not. this is really gonna help a lot in the future

So since this is a cell phone blog, ima blog about my new upcoming (after christmas :|) phone. The LG Xenon. It has a 2.8" touchscreen, bluetooth connectivity, sideway slider with a full keyboard, 2mp camera with flash and camcorder, and video share XD.

Oh wait, u mean i wasnt supposed to blog about my new phone? I was supposed to blog about new phone tech o.o?
OK.

Then i will blog about the Blackberry Storm 2 smartphone. Specs include a 3.25-inch 360 x 480pixel capacitive SurePress touchscreen display, 802.11b/g WiFi and 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA data, 256MB of flash memory, 2GB of onboard memory with microSDHC expansion, 3.5-mm standard headset jack, 3.2 megapixel camera with video recording, built-in GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, and 1400mAh battery giving about 6 hours of 3G talk.

...Dont really know what that means, but im sure its good. For £35 (aboy $70 U.S. currency) it can be yours. Buuuut, first you have to go and buy plane tickets to get it from Europe, the go to Vodafone. The pay for it to get shipped back to America, get the charge and phone service converted to U.S.A.

Too much work for me, I'll stick with the LG Xenon XD.

Brookshire, B-1 said...

I like the BlackBerry Storm 2 because of the 3.2 mega pixal camera and the touch screen keyboard. Another kool feature of this phone is the wifi and a battery giving it 6 hours of 3G talk.

I don't really have any idea about the cellphone technology. But the iDriver sounds neat, who wouldn't want to control thier car with their iPhone? I would! If I owned a car. The only thing is could that mean criminals would be able to rob a bank and drive their get away car to them? And could people use this app to cause crashes on purpose? (I don't know why they would though) But yeah, the iDriver was interesting. *sits to try and figure out what happened in 1st period Wednesday morning due to the PSAT*

mayfield,s-1 said...

I like the Tmobile Motorola Cliq phone, I want a touch screen that slides up. I have the sidekick 08 and I think the motorola will have more fun things to get into to.

Baker,M-1 said...

Katy, yes criminals could use this to rob a bank. Yes somebody would probably think about it and try to, and yes they will probably ban the app because idiots will play bumper carrs with actual cars.

Trikosko, M-1 said...

Having an iphone would be cool, it has a bunch of fun apps to keep me from becoming too bored. Also some practical ones like the Smartstart app where you can start up your car or lock it, very useful.

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

I really want to know where the Smartstart app is because it sounds totally awesome...one thing with that though...what if you have to start your car manually and open everything with a key. Take me for example. I'm a poor mexican who's mother owns a car from 94...or was it 93? Either ways, how would that app work for my moms car...let alone any of our cars...they are not all technical like the newer ones. We're too poor to afford them so we have to make due with the cruddy ones that we have.

robinson,s-1 said...

At the beginning of last summer, after my brother, Zach, graduated from high school my dad bought him a brand new iphone( i honestly dont know what model it was...i just know it was cool) and i would be lying if i said i wasnt a little jealous. I dont know why i felt the need to have internet, or a compass, or any of the other apps that it comes with in the palm of my hand...i just did. There is so much you can do with that phone, that at times it doesnt seem like a phone at all. Although some of the apps you can put on there are useless most of the time, some of them can be really helpful. If i had the money i would definately spend some if it on the iphone

villanueva, manuel, N. 1 said...

I like the Idriver because I like the fact that you could control your car without even being it...and I also like the blackberry because you'll be able to take better pictures

That Samsung 3D LCD tv is awesome!!! Who would not want a television that's in 3-D? I would love to experience the 3d-ness in my own home. But that's not cell phone related.
Personally, I don't care for cell phones as much. AS long as I can talk to people from a distance, I'm fine. Some of the newer models look just like some of the older ones but more expensive. Really, is it a big deal? For all I care, they mostly look alike.

Cell phones don't make lives easier, it destroys them. Yea, car accidents people!!! Oh well, it's their fault :3

Eh but I loved the Samsung Gravity 2 SGH-T469 - metallic pumpkin. It's orange!!!!!

jeffress,r-1 said...

I think alot of this new technology will be great for the future. I really like the nios bluetooth because it is handy when you don't have time to hold the phone and to help you track down your missing device. I don't care for touch screen because it is a hassle and it messes up a lot more than a regular cellphone.

Nealy,J/1 said...

the BLACKBERRY STORM 2 is cool Bluetooth 2.1 (i can store all my favorite songs) 6 hours of 3g talk (my phone doesn't last 3 hours lol) built in GPS 3.2 megapixel camera (i love takin pics) the only thing i hate about this phone because i played with one is it makes a clicking noise so that would be noticed during school... Another technology i found on another website is AMBER ALERT (which is basically a thing that helps locate missing children) they are coming with ABMER ALERT for cell phones were they send you a picture and basic info on the missing child they say it cuts time on actually getting the info out that a child is missing the only problem i can see with this is not everyone has a camera phone so how would the law officials get that??? just incase you didn't notice MYSPACE also offers a ABMER ALERT were they give you the basic info... but the website for the abmer alert program is (www.reuters.com/.../idUS198661+14-May-2009+PRN20090514)

After looking at the "jailbroken" iphone, it made me think that having a screen to see all of the app pages would be beneficial. But because the phone is jailbroken, it means that there is a greater risk for your phone crashing, which is why jailbreaking the itouch is more recommended... because i am an iphone user, i would not advise people to jail break their phone, i mean sure its pretty much an unlimited app store, but at what cost. So just be sure to be safe when doing illegal stuff to your phone.

These phones are awsomeness. I like the big desserts better mmmm yummy!!! :)

In case you haven't noticed, some of the new tech coming out is pretty amazing. I think its really cool that were incorporating cell phone technolog into other things like cars and mp3 players. How cool is it that we now have a touch screen phone that runs "windows XP." Not a dumb dulled down version, the full thing!!!!!! ...the future looks pretty bright for me

villanueva,f-2 said...

I think alot of this new technology will is great. The Blackberry Storm 2 smartphone is really cool and i would like to have that phone and best of all it has a battery giving about 6 hours to talk and text!!!!

i liked a phone i think it was the htc D2 and since miss L took my phone yesterday (no hard fellings) i think ima get it depending on when it comes out because i need one really soon if the phone comes out 2 years from now then im not but if it come out in the next few months then i can wait

Abernathy, J-2 said...

Well im not a huge phone fanatic and never know about the new phones that come out but some of these look pretty useful. The Samsung Rogue looks like a phone i would like. Although it appears to be bulky the whole AMOLED thing looks cool, as well as the multiple ajustments you can make. I also like the full keyboard and touchscreen.

So, I didn't get a cell phone until the 8th grade. I'm lame. Before I got it, I was like "what's so cool about them?" Well, when I got one I found out. I'm absolutely in love, and for those people who whine and complain about teenagers or the "generation" having cell phones "glued to their ears" just don't understand how they're becoming a - not really, but pretty close - necessity.

Anyways, my phone's pretty cool, but it's getting old and looking at these phones made me realize I need a new one. I personally like the Samsung Rogue SCH-U960. It looks really cool, has a qwerty keypad, voice dialing, touch screen capabilities, 3mp camera, and lots of more. :D

It's very affordable, so I can't wait to get one. The only downside is that it requires a data plan (which I'm sure newer phones will require it in the near future), which I don't exactly use the internet on my phone, but I guess it's always time to try new things. =]

Basically, if it has a touch screen, a keyboard, and a camera, I'll love it. And I guess iPhones are extra cool because of all the apps. Of course, watching friends of mine argue over stealing one another's crops on their iFarms is really annoying. (Ryan.) Anyway, I love my Xenon. It's simple and I can text on it(...and check my facebook occasionally...and edit pictures...and lots of other cool things). That's good enough for me. I love technology, but cellular "telephones" are getting a little too complicated...

anderson a-2 said...

i like the new phone technology where everything is goin touchy for example like the htc touch diamond2 completely touch screen its so AWSOME and EXPENSIVE!!! but i think its worth it with the way things are going these days with phones. And would it kill the cell phone makers to make a fone with BIGGER BUTTONS... i mean really most fones now a days are designed with small thumb people in mind,

small buttons + big thumbs = 2 buttons at a time.....NOT COOL

Wiley, C - 3 said...

The powermat is really cool. YoU dont have charge yor phone in so dont have to worry about plugging in stuff.

Weatherford, R-3 said...

I like the Samsung Rogue for a few reasons. One is the name, it just kinda sounds cool. Second, I like the whole slide thing that it has going on. Third and last, I still have the oldest razor model that they don't even manufacture anymore, so anything looks good to me.

Sampietro, M-3 said...

Well, I don't have a cell phone, but now that I have a job, I'm hoping that I might finally get one, cause my mama will CERTAINLY NOT be paying for it...anywho, I think I would want the Samsung Juke U470. I think it's REALLY pretty and I like how it's like a phone and an iPod. I would like having it, since I have neither an iPod OR a cell phone, and this way I could just get two in one, right? I also like how thin it is...unfortunately, I'm am po so I'll probably just get a gophone or something lame when I give into finally buying a cell phone. :(

Hawkins, M - 3 said...

The blackberry storm 2 looks like it would it be the best blackberry ever invented...but there is always going to be a copy cat so I might end up with that one because it will be cheaper...lolz:)

i really like the iphone, my parents just got iphones over the weekend and i am VERY envious! they seem very usefull and fun for everyone weather it be a teenager or a technologically slow parent. however, i find it kind of funny how every new phone has hundreds of new apps a features then the last, its starting to become rediculous (i know i cant spell) how many apps there are now. for instance, i was searching the app store on my moms iphone and i noticed that there were several similar sounding apps so i typed in the one word they had in common and....there are 35 apps for fart noises...yeah 35!! its just rediculous

Williams, T-3 said...

i think the smartstart application is really cool. if you're like me, you never leave your phone in the car when you go ANYWHERE. im pretty sure its attached to my hand permanently.
on the other hand, it also seems tricky to me. what if you just decide to leave your keys in the car and lock it thinking you have your phone? but when you try to unlock your car the iphone malfunctions. most people i have talked to that do have the iphone have had at least a few problems with it. thats the only drawback i have to this useful application.

my cellular device is so cool but i just love the way i can touch and send messages its so easy. i must say my new phone is the bomb my phone can hold a whole song i can browse the internet check my myspace how cool is that but when the bill comes thats not looking so cool.spending a lot of money on my new phone was really worth it. it wakes me up in the morning but the alarm is very annoying but i cant live with out my new baby.

Asquith,C-3 said...

I read about an iphone that was jailbroken recently. I wouldn't advise this considering some of its features are illegal, but I really liked what one hacker did to his phone...on the iphone one scrolls (slides) through all of his/her applications if there are too many to fit on the screen. This guy has solved the problem by minimizing all of the pages, allowing you to add tons of extra apps to your phone and viewing becomes easier.

Before getting my Samsung Impression, I wasn't really into getting a touchscreen phone just because I thought it would be harder to use and easier to break. However, I just couldn't help but succumb to the brilliantly displayed phone. Instead of getting a phone that was totally touchscreen like the Iphone, the Impression, which has a full keyboard, was like a compromise for me since I wasn't ready to take the next step into the crazy touchscreen world! Being touchscreen/full keyboard also helps me stop texting while driving because I've tried and let's just say it was pretty difficult!

I like the Blackberry storm 2 the most. Everything about it from it being touch screen down to the GPS system. Right now i have a touch screen fone but for the simple fact it continues to have problems u i think i would do a lot better job with this gorgeous touch device it would be like a new bor baby to me, an i could never live without my fone i mean the world to me. By the way i love the GPS system!!!!!

There is one thing I hate about some phones. They aren't always available for your cell phone provider. Ex: You have Cellular One. You want the Samsung Rogue and discover that only Verizon Wireless has that phone. What do you do? you get pissed, that's what you do.

okay so i accidentally pressed enter. I would like to have the Samsung Rogue if you didn't catch that from my little example. It is much cooler looking than the Samsung star which my sister has. It basically has the same things except for a slide out keyboard and the design, obviously.

The power mat is very...erm...unique, just the concept is amazing. I wonder if you could take that on the road with you, or install one in your car for on-the-go charging. Also i wonder if it is just Apple Brand items that you can charge, due to the specifics of the power mat.

Ok...well I am currently a Blackberry Curve owner...but I've already been through 4 of the same phone. While I love my Blackberry...it's pretty out of date. The new Blackberry Bold 9700 (which is coming out in November), however, is awesome. Its equipped with a 480 x 360 display (much larger and with a higher number of pixels per sqare inch than my current phone), a WiFi antennae, and many other useful features. Unlike the original Blackberry Bold, however, it has buttons AND a touch screen. As my birthday is in November, I might have to add this little number to my gift-list...check for it in my pocket in a few months.

Phones have came so far now! From the huge old phones that made you want to pull out your hair to all the cool phones they have now!I would like to get an IPhone even though i would rather just get an IPod and another cell phone if i had the choice.
If i got a cell phone i would want it to have all the apps on it like the Ipod and to be touch screen. But along with the touch screen i would want it to have a full key board on it cause the touch keyboards drive me crazy!!!Long nails and touch screens dont work out for Shanika!!!!
I would want it to have MP3 on it and be able to play videos and all that fun stuff!!!Im a hpyer person!i have to be doing something at all times!!!And there has got to be lots of games on there!!BORED = NOT FUN!!

DON'T HATE!>_<
at least i'm not bragging about the 'supa supa awesome' features that my phone may or my not have.

New Phone Is Better But I Would Want the phone with the cam were you can look at the person why you talking to them. That would be so cool, and when you texting your could tell the phone wat to right, and tell the phone who you want to call and stuff. A that you dont have to press buttons on talking that would be so clean!!

I feel like talking about a new phone that is currently being offered on AT&T plans. I chose the Samsung Impression because I recently upgraded to this phone last weekend(It was a major relief from the gophone I've had for the past 3 years). This phone is FM Radio, and XM radio campatable. It also has excellent video and camera capable. The huge screen is luxury I could become very used to (and don't want to give up anytime soon).

I love the phones that have touch screens but I also would want an add on qwerty keyboard so I wouldn't be compleatly dependent on the touch screen. I really want all the cool applications that go alo9ng with the iphone but don't really want to pay for the plan(too expensive for me).

It is amazing how many new technologies keep popping up in our phones. Voice activation, full touch, radio, tv, movies, music, etc. I think very soon that there will only be one device that covers all the technology things we could ever think of (ipods, radios, tv, and phone combined). I personally would be worried about losing the phone. Another thing would be cost. They could get pretty pricey.

Small,K-6 said...

Personally, I don't need a fancy-shmancy cameraphone with video recording capabilities and internet streaming and multimedia messaging... No, I'm fine with my Nokia 'brick' that can put up with a little wear and tear... Cris-bon would know what I'm talking about. Phones are meant to be used for calling, no?

So, what I guess I'm saying is that I didn't really see any phones that drew my attention, or that I felt phone-envy for. If I want to search the web, I'll just use a computer- the screen is bigger, and probably better at doing that. If I want to take a picture, I'll use a camera. That's what they were made for. If I want to record a video, I'll use a camcorder, m'kay?

I don't like the thought of having all these features in one package, despite the convenience. I mean, once you damage the packaging, the rest of it's useless.

Maybe someone could explain to me the charms of this shiny new technology that, while gorgeous on the outside, is so fragile and prone to breakage over something, while not sleek and slim and high-tech, does what its supposed to in a non-complicated way, and won't suffer from being dropped on the sidewalk a couple of times?

so a lot of people that i know have ipones.the phone that almost everyone wants because it can instantly connect you to the internet along with games, gps and a camera and yada yada..but the great thing about it is that if a person could come up with the iphone during our time, what is going to be invented within 10-30 years?
My phone is simple and the top three things that i use are
1.texting-which as many adults today say that it "limits the verbal communication between humans"and yada yada..
2.the actual dialing of numbers to use the phone to talk to someone.
3.the alarm.
so i have no idea what i would do if i had an iphone.
I could be like everyone else and post a new facebook status about everything i do every second of everyday...
"now im in ms. L's class..."
"now im walking in the hallway...
"Now im in year book..."
"now im at practice..its sooo hot and gross..wishing i was at home!"
yeah..i chose not to be one of those people. :)
but id still buy the iphone.

I really like that power mat thang. I want to buy one. I hate those cords and plugs, so one universal charger with no plugs is uber cool.

i dont like the iphone application about unlocking your car on the phone because what if your phone gets stolen and someone can steal your car next. In plus someone can hack your phone and steal your car once again.

Well i really wouldn't spend my money on any of this, i have a great phone at the time, it works, it has a MP3 player, a camara internet apps, and many other things to make me happy. Do I want more? Yes, but if i had a phone that I could play Call Of Duty 4 in, i would still want more, so i'll just stick to what i have and not have to pay more for something that will just get obsolete within four months.

cell phones are apart of everyday life. Theyve made life much easier and much safer. iphones have completely changed the phone in general cause of all the extra junk that comes with it, and i can probably say that the iphone will get even more complicated and awesome as time goes on

Okay, so I recently (Sometime in the last year or so) got a new phone, the Samsung Propel. No, it isn't a fancy touch screen or anything like that, but it does have a full keyboard which slides out and eliminates the irritating three letter to one key thing. True enough, the camera isn't *amazing* but it is enough, and considering that I usually just use it to keep in touch with my friends, it works just perfect. Yes, an iPhone would be interesting to play with, but knowing my luck, it would probably fall in a river of nuclear waste and be eaten by a mutant ninja turtle or something.

Personally I hate cell phones, being a computer person, I believe that you can do anything with a computer that you can do with a cell phone. You can make calls with a computer, Text message with a computer, and also surf the Internet.

If I misspelled anything it's Arthur's fault.

Well i really dont know where to go with this. I am happy with my phone as long as it gets service, texts, and can call. Thats about all I use. I dont think its really all that necessary for a student to constiently need internet and lots of other applications on there phone.

The new upgrades and peripherals for phones seem to becoming more useful. The only thing I don't care for is texting (if I wanted to communicate with a phone, I would talk through it, the way it's meant to work).

Vincent the point of a Cell Phone is it fits in your pocket. Try to put your laptop in your pocket, and then go out somewhere and make a call. Smartphones are now able to do pretty much anything that a laptop can do, but fit in your pocket and are more mobile.

Shanika remind me not to let you mess with my iPod Touch, you wouldn't like it anyway
On another note:

Burst Projector Concept Cell Phone:
Interesting concept, but needing to put it on a flat surface to get some of the menus and controls would eventually get on my nerves.

By the way. I miss this class learning Java is quite annoying sometime.

I live on my cell phone and I text 24/7. This smartstart iphone is pretty cool I would definitly use it, but it could be dangerous with the whole unlocking your car thing.
