Blog 7 - 10/18/09

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

This week is a video blog. On Tuesday we will watch a video from David Pogue, who is the technology reviewer for the New York Times. He spoke at this past year's TED convention (and yall know how I love me some TED videos . . .). In this video he tells us about several really cool cell phone things that I didn't know we could do. I'm betting some of yall don't know either.

As always, we will not be whipping out our cell phones in class to try these tricks!

On Thursday you can tell me what you think about his cell phone tricks. Will you use any of them? OR you can tell me about your own cell phone tricks that some of the rest of us might not know about.

Talk to me . . .

I'm glad yall enjoyed / are enjoying David Pogue (well, except for Cassidy) because you'll be seeing more of him. He's a great tech writer, and he's on the news shows all the time giving technology updates. There are also another couple of his videos I plan on watching later in the year.

Cassidy, I'm gonna need you to get on board the David Pogue train. LOL

I enjoyed listening to David Pogue talk about cellphones. Even though I am kind of lacking in the celluar technology today. I wouldn't doubt about people using the Popularity Dailer to get out of some "sticky situtations." And the Google question anwsering is neat, because they have a lot of people working to answer people's questions. Um, I can't really think of anything else to say...

Arrg Mrs. L i hate it when it rains in the morning, it make me sleepy T^T -.- ...zzzZZZ

Alrighty on to business, if i can remember it.

1. Those question answering things like texting google and such could totally be used to cheat on homework.

2. Mainly, this video made me want an iPhone more than I already did. Why? Lets See: Games, Resturant Finder,Games, did I mention games. I could actually have stuff to do on the train trip im taking in Dec.

And David Pogue is hilarious. Its awesome.

Oh, wow, new cell phone tech. Big deal!! They will possibly one day just start to take over the world...wait, too late. People get hooked on cell phones.
But what I liked about the viddy, was the texting Google for info!! Like you could ask anything and get an answer? That is awesome!!! But you can't use it in school, how sad. Just sayin'. Other than that, the other things didn't really catch my attention.

I think the grand central thing will rock somebodies world specially if someone calls you in the middle on the night while your sleeping, but it would be good for an alarm. The thing about texting google instead of the 411 thing ..I think that is really helpful. The WiFi cellphone I think that should belong in my household.

Patton,A-1 said...

The popularity dialer is genious. it was a great thought for someone to come up with. now if i need to get out of somewhere i can use this. the wifi cell phones are awesome as well. my bill would be high at all if i had this on my phone. it is cool

Trikosko, M-1 said...

There was a lot of cool stuff I didn't know about in that video. I found the texting google stuff and voice recording particulary interesting, I would deffinately use those. And thanks, Apple for teaching those cell phone companies a lesson.

Nealy,J/1 said...

I like the SpinVox, Phonetag (voicemail to email or text) because during school i receive phone calls and i can't answer so if it can be transmitted into a text then that would be great cause like everyone i do TEXT during school LOL... I don't like the Grand Central (where all cell phones ring @ the same time) first you should only have one cell phone unless one is personal and the other business but that would get confusing hearing all the phones ringing @ one time... TEXTING GOOGLE FOR INFO would be great because if you have to do a research paper for school all you got to do is pull out your phone and get the information you need.

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

SpinVox and/or Phonetag...now what do you think about that. You just know someone has already abused the power that those services wield. Also that Popularity Dialer is the most awesomest of things that mankind has ever invented. What better way to slink your way out of a bad situation than a fake business or relationship call. GENIUS!! I shall use that to the full extent of its capabilities... now if only I had a cell phone..

robinson,s-1 said...

I found David Pogue's video to not only be entertaining and enjoyable, but very beneficial as well. I think my favorite trick was the cha cha, where you could text any question, and recieve an answer shortly after. I thought it was cool that there was someone, somewhere just waiting for you to text a random question to them, so they can get paid. It could be very useful at times. I also liked the popularity dialer, just because i found it amusing that you could fake a call, and get out of a sticky situation. Im not sure if i will ever use any of these tricks, but its nice knowing that if i need to, they're there.

jeffress,r-1 said...

I really thought David Pogue's tech talk was neat and Awesome at the same time. I think the cha cha thing will be great because someone could answer a person on the spot or not have to spend hours on the computer searching for something. I love the ipod app where you hum a tune and it finds a song for you because a lot of times I know the tune of a song but can't think what it's called(I HATE that!!!).

I'm using a Google Phone with Android Operation, I think it's way better than an IPhone because it's newer and it has a slid out keyboard. One of the thing that an Iphone doesn't have but the G1 does is the Google Street View with a compass.

Brookshire, B-1 said...

I like the CHACHA feature, because it can answer those hard or simple questions you my have. I also enjoy the feature that lets you know what song it is that you are singing. I belive that cell phones have a whole new meaning.

Goff,R-2 said...

when watching this video, i was suprised to find out that ChaCha is actual people answering, not just a server database that will rad the question and answer it for you.
i am an iphone user and i have found some of the apps that he showed, like Midomi, the app that tells you the name of a song and who sings it.
i know alot of people who use skype, and although i havent tried it for myself, i think it is kinda of nifty how you can talk to people for free, but how does the Skype business make any profit? i will have to try it for myself

Abernathy, J-2 said...

David Pogue is hilarious i loved watching him for thirty minutes and not getting bored once. I liked the whole Popularity Dialer, that seems like it could be cool and also very helpful and useful for someone at times and just a fun joke as well. I also like the Cha cha, although ive already heard of it, i think it works very well and can answer just about anything. Finally people are creating something of use!!!

Parkhurst, M-2 said...

David Pogue was a very interesting and entertaining presenter, but the one thing that stuck out to me the most was the popularity dialer. There have been several times that in an awkward situation I would have done anything for an unexpected call. Although it would improve our lying skills which aren't exactly praised by parents, it may save you from many desperate moments. Another thing I enjoyed learning more about was the ChaCha line. I have used it before but this informed me on more of how believable the answers I received were, which evidently are definate based on human research. The new things that are coming out seem to get better and better, hopefully it stays this way.

Anonymous said...

Well, David Pogue was really funny and can play the piano pretty well. What I think I enjoyed most was that he's just an everyday cell phone user like the rest of us (you know, besides the fact that it's his job) and is looking at everyday cell phone issues and is researching third party loopholes as to get around them. I liked the idea of texting/calling Google for answers since ChaCha costs money (I believe it even costs if you have unlimited messages), the direction function was really helpful and even twice as cool that it just goes ahead and connects you to what you're looking for. The Popularity dialer was probably the absolute coolest of them all, though. I'm going to have to try it out..

And, alas, now I too want an iPhone. Its apps are just too darn cool looking for their own good.

Hernandez, J - 2 said...

I was amazed at what David Pogue talked about. I didn't know that cell phones could do stuff like that it's pretty awsome now that i do know ican mess around on my phone more. i really liked the wi-fi cell phones the fact that you won't be charged by making calls if your inside a wi-fi hotspot is just pure genius.

anderson a-2 said...

The spinvox feature thing that David Pogue was talking about is cool because you wount have to listen to this automated machine telling you to press 50 buttons just to listen to a message or two, you could just look at a text message or email message and its creepy because you have no idea if sumone is listenin to you messages to give you the improtant parts.

Cortines,m-2 said...

Pogue was lots of fun. His song at the end was the best, of course, and I've been wanting an iPhone ever since. Anyway, I really like the idea of texting Google and ChaCha for quick info. That would really come in handy if you needed something and didn't have 'net access. (Kinda like being at my house.) And while it's kinda ridiculous, I love the popularity dialer. I like people to think that other people want to talk to me. lol It would also be a great diversion if you knew you were going to be in an awkward situation. Tell whoever is around that your cousin is having a baby or something and leave. That'd be so great. I hope I can use that soon.

brooks,h-2 said...

i thought the wifi cell phones are pretty cool and how u can get the apps for you iphone/ ipod touch its cool. icould realy get in to the spinvox i hate the voicemail that you get with the provider it would be a nice thing to have.

Williams, T-3 said...

I didnt get to watch the video but from reading other comments I heard about texting Google for info. I think thats pretty cool although there is another thing out that if you have a question you text the question to a certain 4-digit number and they send you the answer. It costs 99 cents I think for each answer. I'm not sure if thats the same thing as texting Google but I think it could be very useful in day to day life.

Hawkins, M - 3 said...

The info he gave us was very helpful and cheap...Im going to try and see if I can get the answers to my homework...lolz

Asquith,C-3 said...

I enjoyed listening to David Pogue entertain/inform us about new cell phone technology. I especially found "ChaCha" to be interesting. It seems like a very easy way to find information when you dont have access to a library or computer.

Yarbrough, V - 3 said...

I think all of the cellphones are neat exspecially the wifi I even got a skype accont yesterday it actually works it so amazing but the only thing is I have to buy some skype credit for $10 or more.

My parents just got new iphones last week so of coarse i had to show them the iphone song! That Midomi app is REALLY cool, apparantley one of the voices in my head is alwayse listening to an ipod because im constantley hearing random bits of songs. So now i can pick up my dads iphone and sing into it then ill know what song i currentley have stuck up there! Alot of those other apps and services seem really usefull, i personally cant wait to use that popularity caller thing...might be fun...

i really enjoyed listening to David Pogue talking about cellphone technology. My favorite was Popularity Dialer because you can get out of anything with it.

Padilla, J - 3 said...

Pogue's speech about cell phones and the many features that already exist was pretty interesting since he was a little "out there." I hadn't heard of most of the stuff he was talking about like Popularity Dialer and Phone tag, but I knew about Cha Cha. I got into this habit of texting ChaCha for everything, but I finally stopped after it told me I had run out of free texts to ChaCha for that month... Anyways, I think I'll try to start texting google for my random daily questions. Even though texting a question may sound a bit lazier than looking up the answer yourself, technology keeps evolving to help us have an "easier" life...

payton, j - 3 said...

David Pogue is funny and entertaining he needs to come visit our school to liven it up and that song really made me want an "iiiiifone" lol..... and i dent knw that u can do all dat wit your fone i my favorite features are the ability to tex google and ask questions bout wateva and get an answer and the phone ajusting to wat music u lyk to listen to.

Sampietro, M-3 said...

OK firstly I have to express my extreme excitemnet that I now actually own a cell phone! Now, secondly, I just don't understand the whole iPhone craze. I think that because they are touch phones, they get all narsty looking and greasy on the screen and I JUST DON'T LIKE THAT. Also, I have used one before and it is hard as heck to use a touch QWERTY keyboard. I prefer one that ain't on the screen like the way my (awesome) new Samsung Comeback is, just saying...OK now to what David Pogue was talking about. I thought the whole thing about texting questions to google and chacha is pretty cool, but I'm also pretty sure that it ain't free. It might have been when he was talking about it, but now I doubt it still is, because isn't kgb like 99 cents an answer? Or 10 cents? Whatever, it's still money. I DID think that Popularity Dialer was AWESOME...I really need that like 24/7...SERIOUSLY, there are some people I want to avoid and that would really help. OK I'm pretty sure that my comment is long enough now...

Flynn,R-3 said...

First off, the popularity dialer is amazing on so many levels...Knowing that you can have your own phone call you with a customized voice is just plain genious. Second, the WiFi connection sounds very convenient for anyone who is frugal with their minutes.

First of all, the guy wasn't funny at all like you said he would be Mrs. L, I was slightly disappointed, and second, I like the google app that he showed us, I use Cha Cha, but sometimes you run out of questions for Cha Cha but thats not the case for google, it makes my life a lot easier on occasions.

About the Popularity Dialer, my sister has a phone that already has that feature built in! On her phone it is called the fake call feature.

What I really liked, was the WiFi cell phone technology people have come up with to make free calls anywhere there was WiFi.

alvarado, m-4 said...

it would be coool when they call you to have all your phones ringing at one time. like you might not be at home when they call ur house, and you have your cell phone with you and it will also be ringing that way u wont miss a call. thats why i think the Grand Central thing would be cool.

Pixley, J-4 said...

The iphone app, midomi (i think that's how it's spelled) is something that i've always, and i mean, always needed. I dont know how many times ive had just the tune of a song stuck in my head and couldnt remember the song itself. How they do it? *shrugs* idk but it's abso-freaking-lutly amazing.

Miller, J - 2 said...

I really like the wifi box for free calls, the only down side of it is you have to of made the call from your house. I allso found the 411 thing interesting I mean it's free and finally you can customise your voice mails that you leave for sertain people. it could be your brother calling and the voicemail could say whats up bro leave your name number etc...
or if it is your girl friend it coulbe like "high babe" or something like that
on the same phone how awsome is that?

Spruiell, S - 4 said...

I thought that David Pogue's presentation was pretty good...he was a little theatrical for my taste, but he had lots of clever tricks and beneficial information to offer. I really liked the Cha cha texting company that he talked about...after we watched his video, I went home and tried it and they actually gave me a correct answer in about 1 minute. I thought it was just for funny stuff...but they really do have answers for nearly everything. I think this is a really beneficial service and I think I'll be using it pretty often in the future. I also thought the Grand Central was a pretty cool idea...having all of your phones hooked up to one line would be great...I think it would definitely help me cut down on missed calls.

Willis, A - 4 said...

*What i like about the new updated cell phones are when you do a beat like humming a song it will look it up and find the song that you were just humming.I thought it was really cool, and when they give you a number and when someone calls it all of your phones starts to ring like your house phone and cell phones starts ringing. I think thats the most important thing of all like you don't have to miss any important calls that you need.*

Howard, Z - 4 said...

i thought his cell phone tricks were pretty cool even though ive heard of almost all of em. The google thing was the coolest, insane how it responds to you in literally 5 seconds. It's probably better then cha cha since you get limited questions O_o, which sucks.OH and the ipod song he sang at the end was genious, i bet his views on youtube is over 9000!!

Cole, S - 4 said...

I really liked the WiFi Cell Phones or when you make a call inside your house its free and then if you go outside your house and leave it will still be free.If I had a phone I would sure as heck find out how to get that on my phone.I also liked the Grand Central because there could be an emergency and you could be out doing work and the person trying to get a hold of you may only know one of your #'s.Then when they called one of your #'s you would still get the call on all your cells.
I also liked how you could text google for info. That is really smart to me.I would totally use that if I had it!!!!

shepherd, a - 4 said...

i'm kinda jealous some of these apps are just so nice and i'm missing out on them i get songs stuck in my head all the time, but i never remember their names if i just sing the song to the phone, i'd even be able to go and get it on my playlist! the fake calls from your boss or girlfriend is ok if you're really bad at getting yourself into awkward situations, but i'd be afraid people were just trying to get away from me i'm not that scary, am i?

Okay, I truely enjoyed the video. The one downfall: this made me want an iphone really really bad (which is saying something because I've wanted one for a while)

My favorite thing I learned was the Google and ChaCha type your question and you get an answer thing. That could be so useful whenever something crosses you mind and you know you should know it but it has just slipped your mind (just had a flashback to 1st period).

Small,K-6 said...

Didn't I say just last week that I didn't need me any of that new-fangled teckynolyjee? I really just need a phone that can make calls.

I've actually seen the restaurant finder in action- my aunt has that app on her phone. It's pretty cool. You can lock the categories, and spin, one or two at a time, or all three if you want. It's not just pretty cool, it's REALLY cool But I don't need/want it.

The popularity calls thing sounds really useful. I sure could have used it Saturday while at the Band competition amongst people who really couldn't care less about whether I was there or not. Would've given me a good excuse to up and leave.

Man o man is that google txt was awesome. Ive already used it about 20 times to find out the prices of several items. Did you know that if you are confused and dont know what to do, just txt google the word "help." It will then give you a list of things you can ask google such as weather, product, stock quotes, and even prices.

Castellanos, A - 6 said...

So the popularity dialer is pretty much awesome. Why?Because who hasnt been in those situations where they just wish their phone would ring and act as if it were an emergency to get out of there?
I really think that its a sneaky, but its still pretty creative.

Cha cha is also really resourceful though. Theres always those converstaions that no one can remember which guy played a person in a movie or what song was performed at an awards show, etc.

There were a lot of other cool inventions on the phone though that I had never heard about.

As for David Pogue himself, hes alright. He could lay off a little on the cheesiness though :)
But overall it was very informative and entertaining.

Gonzalez, M - 6 said...

i thought it was real interesting... i forgot the name of it, but the one where u call and leave a voicemail and it sends it to the number in a text... ive seen it done and its great use, mainly b/c i have a cousin who is mute and deaf and his parents use it with him. I use ChaCha everynow and then its useful as well b/c you can ask any question and you'll always get an answer, too bad it has a limit though.

many parents feel that they want their child to be able to call someone for help if these situations occur. School authorities point out that during the Columbine shootings in April,1999 so many cell phone calls were made that whole cell phone systems were knocked out, not only making the children's' cell phones useless but some emergency personnel's as well. Educators believe that administrators and crisis teams can deal with these emergency situations more efficiently if the children are not trying to call their parents
