Blog 8 - 10/26/09

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

So let's get down to the nitty gritty with this cell phone thing.

How can we REALLY make these things useful in a school setting? REALLY useful?

Dr. Hutto has made it clear that if we could prove the cell phone's value in the scholarly setting he would ask the board to take a look at the policy.

Me? I don't care much one way or the other. So why am I such a cell phone nazi?

Here's the thing . . . If I let one person slide by with pulling their cell phone out of their pocket to check messages every 5 minutes, I'm pretty much giving everybody in the room the same permission. And before you know it there's an epidemic of Illegal Cell Phone Usage. It's like the plague.

Not to mention the fact that if you have time to be distracted by your cell phone then I am OBVIOUSLY not working you hard enough and I need to assign more stuff to do.

So let's really talk about it this week. Go out on the internet and do some research and see if you can find instances of schools using cell phones as part of the curriculum. You will need to post the link that YOU find so that I can check it out. OR you can give me some suggestions about how we can seriously use these things for good in a scholarly setting. These are the only two things that will earn you a grade this week.

PLEASE NOTE: Once a link has been listed twice you may no longer list it as your own.

Talk to me . . .

Here is a site that makes a good argument for having cell phone usage:

http://tinyurl.com/73v23q

It make a good point about how schools are very anti-tech because they are considered unnecesary. I think its mainly because of the cheating possibilities.

It's strange that cell phones are allowed in private schools, but banned from public schools. Does that mean that our school board does not trust us? Obviously not. The thing is with some parents is that they are over protective...which is hilarious, but not since the 9/11 incident
^^ That's what I read

The phones cost about $17 a month for the school. They're using the phones to do stuff like write essays, draw pictures and more, interesting.

This is interesting; the school encourages their students to use the cell phones in the class, using them to gather information for projects. Or taking pictures of notes to study later if one can not write quickly.

This website gives information about a school that not only has a loose cell phone policy, but also encourages teachers to let students use their cell phones for educational purposes. Students may, if they can, get on the internet to look up information about a particular subject. Instead of the entire class spending an entire day in the computer lab looking up information, they can spend a few minutes on the phone and find the same information. In my opinion, it a pretty good idea.

Cell phones would be good in school so they could keep their schedules, note their homework, take pics of notes and use a calculator. Their are disadvantages but not enough to keep phones totally out of schools!

Here is a great site

http://cellphones.lovetoknow.com/Pros_of_Cell_Phones_in_School

I think cell phone use in school can be very helpful. Only if students don't abuse it. The only problem i seen that alot of websites stated was CHEATING ok the only major test that they should monitor cheating is the TAKS test and they take up cell phones so whats the big deal... but without using cell phones students cheat on test so they can get over it...

Another website:

http://teachingtoday.glencoe.com/howtoarticles/cell-phones-in-the-classroom

And another one but its blocked but i think it offers great info...

www.teach42.com/2005/02/25/cell-phones-in-the-classroom

the only other problem i can see with cell phones is not everyone can afford one or afford an up to date one... i forgot the website but there is actually a school that uses cell phones during school to take test and stuff like that if you can look @ it from a positive view point and not negative then you will think cell phone use during school is great

These are a few Pros of cell phones in our schools:

Students can take pictures of class projects to e-mail or show to parents. Ordinarily, parents do not see projects that are completed in groups in school.
Students can text message missed assignments to classmates that are absent. A buddy system can be put into place.
Many cell phones are equipped with calculators—plenty of new math curricula encourage the use of a calculator when problem-solving. A student should become accustomed to having a calculator handy for both homework and real life math applications.
If a student is slow to copy notes from the board, pictures can be taken of the missed notes and accessed later. Ditto sending notes to absent classmates.
Students can listen to music with ear buds if the cell phone is equipped with this option during independent study—many students find this relaxing and comfortable and are more productive as a result.

Also, some phones such as the iphone have very convenient (and fast) note taking apps. I wish I could use mine in DC History. :(

Hall Davidson, the director of the Discovery Educator Network, thinks that classrooms should put cell phones into good use. He thinks that cell phones can be useful especially when needing to research or record something. He realizes that we shouldn't ignore cell phones and all the technology it has to offer and further help students. I mostly agree with him, but I know that it will take time for people to even consider having cell phones in class because of all the disadvantages they bring such as cheating.

http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2009/03/making-case-for-cell-phones-in-schools.html

In this blog, the teacher talks about how she allows her students to use their cell phones, mainly the texting device, in the classroom as part of the curriculum. She goes on to list reason why cell phone usage in school should be allowed, saying that cell phones promote organization, that they keep matters private, that they speed up answer retrieval, etc. Now, I don't think that this is a bad idea, I just don't think that students would actually embrace this. They would likely just continue using their cell phones for the stupid things that they always have. Don't get me wrong...I absolutely use my phone for all the stupid things that every other teenager uses their phones for: drama texting, "What's up?" texts, taking pictures, etc. I think that since teachers KNOW students will break the rules anyway, they want excuses so that along with the struggles of everday teaching, they don't also have to deal with punishment for such silly things. I DON'T think that cell phone usage would ever be used for "educational" purposes, especially by the dramatic, annoying teenagers (including myself) who swarm every high school in the world.

Here's a site that advocates cell phone use in the classroom while observing the challenges that this petition would face:

http://changeobserver.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=10277

The article talks about how in New York, where some of the most prestigious high schools in the nation are located, the students are often required to check their cell phones at the door. The author recognizes that while cell phone use can be used to foster learning, there are those who would misuse their new privileges.
Since cell phones are the new personal computer of our decade, they would help students stay connected and could be used as a fantastic teaching tool.

Some things on the site are a little...overboard but most of the things also make good points about cell phone usage in the schools and how they effect the way the students learn. The advantages of having cell phones in the school system are almost endless, but the school board will not recognize that, and have yet to deal with the future of the schools, we must rise up and make a statement on how to change the shcools for the better! VIVA REVOLUTION!

I can't really think of any reason to allow cell phone usage in school for academic purposes. I can, however imagine that, while during a lesson concerning the phone, students would not be doing what they're supposed to be doing and texting assignments from other classes to their friends.

Although, I'm sure someone will be able to come up with a logical reason for why cell phones should be used in school for reasons other than serious emergencies.

People say that the students could use their phones for research by accessing the internet without using a computer, but what about those of us whose parents won't dish out the money for a new phone that can do nifty things like that? I feel that we're at a slight disadvantage.

Maybe that's just me.

ok, so here's the deal... my step sister went to some private highschool in dallas. i think it was something like ursaline academy... but idc realy. anyway they could use laptops in their classes in order to do research. now a little ol po-dunk highschool such as nhs (no offense) cant afford to provide students with up to date laptops and they cant very well demand that students provide their own computers... seeing as how so many cell phones have internet access these days students could use their phones to do research. it is a little bit unorthadox but it is convenient and that way the school won't have to provide the student body with computers and put thet money they saved to something else.

Okay, yes these links have already been posted, however, I really had to put this up here. Teaching styles are not up to date. " The curriculum in U.S. schools today traces its roots to the 19th century." We are being taught for a 19th century world when we are actually well into the 21st. What exactly can one hope to gain by training the future for the past? Cellphones and personal computers ensure that we have a world of information at our fingertips. We should in fact not be taught to memorize, for the days are long since gone when all in the found world could be known by a single person, but insted we should be taught how to /find/ the information we need. That will more prepare us for the true nature of the times in which we live.

Though I think cell phones are just a major distraction I can't help that I myself also want to check my messages during class(not in your class, Mrs L. don't worry!) I think cell phones can be used for calculators in other class than your basic math courses. The camera of some phones could be used to take pictures in a science experiement to catogorize the different changes that are occuring throughout the experiment. The phones can also be used to check the internet when you are working on a project in glass and there is no dictionary near you. This could be so convenient.

Here is the site I look up:

ITS ME!!!!!!! anyways, i found a great page, although outdated, that has a list of presentations that talk about cell phone use in the class room. The page says that cell phones could be the "swiss army knife" of data collection. Think about it, the name cell phone no longer does the device any justice. They are perfect for taking quick conservative pictures, digital camcorders, audio recording devices, you can store any type of file if you have a memory card, they can access the internet with the touch of a button, some of them can also be used as a flash light. All of these are perfect for class room data collection.

are two sites that I personally found to be pretty interesting.
Some of the experiences I know from experience as to the whole bomb issue dealing with phones. Scared me to death. As well as the fact that alot of students in this district are not the most reputable of characters and would literally use their phones out the wazoo if we had limited phone usage policy. They could give a flip about school and just talk away to friends.

The Columbia Amissourian was all about the amazing applications available to new Smartphones, many they were able to convert to educational purposes.

in the classes of today, there are many ways that we could use cell phones for curricualr purposes.
From texting the students sets of notes, or send them files through bluetooth that are beneficial to the students educational needs. i do not mean pass ring tones from kid to kid, but i mean passing long notes from the internet or files created by the teacher.
Another good example would be the iphone, many kids could use their iphone for research on projects rather than have to go to the computer lab. The iphone could also be used sort of like a flash drive. say a kid is at home and they do a presentation but doesnt have a flash drive to save it to so they can show the slide show to the class the next day. they could easily send the file to their email and because the iphone has the internet, they could access their mail from their phone, plug it up to the teachers computer, and access their presentation from their phone.
I do not think schools are ready for kids to have their cell phones out all the time because they would be texting or something instead of paying attention to the teacher. I just dont think the generation today is ready for that much freedom, but i do think that in the future, cell phones will be allowed to be used for school purposes. :)

jeffress,r-1 said...

Nealy, J/1 I agree with you that cheating on cell phones shouldn't be a big deal because students already cheat, so the same rules should apply. Also ceasar you are right about some kids not caring and just being on their phones if it was legal!!! :)

Parkhurst, M-2 said...

Cell phones used in a classroom setting could be a good thing or a bad thing. Cell phones have accesories such as calculators and some have internet, which could be great for research and/or saving time in the class. On the other hand cell phones are primarily used for communication and unless a teacher is standing over your shoulder making sure your actually finding research, you could be texting, on facebook, myspace, etc., the list can go on and on for these phones. Based on the child's choice though cell phone use can be a very positive thing but for the students who care little about studies will most definately do the opposite of what they are told. Maybe for the higher advanced classes this could be allowed, because most of everyone who has decided to take part in these is serious about their studies.

Okay, so obviously the message is clear: kids want to use their phones during school, but most schools don't allow it due to the fact that the students would abuse this and it would become a tool for cheating or distract them from their work.

Well, common sense says yes, there is going to be a large handful of people that would take the ability to use our phones during school as a get out of jail free card and text like there's no tomorrow, but there's also a handful that would actually use it. Internet access is becoming so common on phones recently, it's crazy. So why not? School has always worked in a disgusting way that has repulsed me for years: if a few kids do something wrong, we all suffer. I hate this rule with a passion. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. This is like saying...because a few people stole merchandise from Wal-mart, NOONE IS ALLOWED TO SHOP HERE ANYMORE. Items are stolen everyday. Guess what, school board? You buy your groceries from Wal-mart everyday too.

There are also safety precautions that cell phones can provide. I know my mom feels way better knowing I have a cell phone she can contact me at 24/7 and always get a hold of me. And, if I were ever in trouble, I would always have a way to contact them. These two links kind of cover that: http://write.teachingmatters.org/node/1789 and http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1148393

So yea. I'm done, I promise.

This site tells the pros and cons of cell phone usage in the classrooms. Although i must say the pros seem a little pointless, they could not win an argument with those points.Such as,we should use our cell phones because of the use of it's calculator?? I think that is just dumb. They provide us with calculators in math class and cell phones dont have the advanced math that we must use with an actual calculator sometimes. And also taking picture of notes?? Well my phone could not take a good enough picture for me to be able to look off it and read the notes. But the cons aren't much better. It says we shouldnt have cell phones because we may record the teachers if they are in bad conduct. Well it's evidence so it doesn't really matter.

Cortines,m-2 said...

In the case of cell phone use in schools, I can uderstand both the pros and the cons. They are definitely a distraction (well...it would be for me...), but they would come in handy when you need to text your parents a question or tell a classmate about an assignment. As for the calculator and stuff, though....that seems kinda far-fetched and inconvenient. Schools generally let you borrow those... Anyway, this site pretty much talks about both the good and the bad. It's pretty straight forward, but I really enjoyed the few "very serious offenses" it listed, and it has some cool links. :P

First, making some allowances for the devices wipes out a very time-consuming, and ultimately trivial, set of disciplinary offenses on the school campus. Kids today have their cell and smart phones welded to their hands, and they come out of the womb with ear buds sprouting from their heads. School officials were increasingly frustrated by enforcing campus cell phone restrictions — almost 400 times last year — most of which were not impairing the learning environment.

Second, these devices are more than social-engagement tools. A great many varieties of cell phones, such as the iconic iPhone, are actually pocket-sized computers with a phone stuck in for good measure.

Forget a homework assignment? A student can phone or text home and have a parent sent a scanned document directly to the phone.

Hung up on a fact while writing a paper during independent study? Just click on your Internet application and your phone becomes the Library of Congress.

Can’t figure out the square root of 1,296? Well, there’s that handy calculator, right at the end of your headphone cables.

Now, are the great many interactions that teens have with these devices mundane, leisurely — or even pointless, if you have an over-40 perspective? Sure.

There it goes finally an excuse to not ban phones in school..check it out they make a great point

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/education&id=6982143

The article states that we can put the texting feture to good use...
"You can use text messages, or SMS as it's also called, to get information, and you can use that in an educational setting, and you can use it to interact," said class instructor Nabeel Ahmad
Example:
Teachers could text either one assignment to their students, or a couple of assignments to their students& breaking them up into groups so that they could collaborate with one another. They could collaborate either via texting with one another, or they could collaborate with the teacher."

i think it is not fair for private schools to have cell phones and public can't. why is that maybe they can not trust us as much for cell phone usage. but i think having your cell phones i school is a great idea maybe your parents is trying to reach you and they can not theres a death in your family and you dont know nothing about it because your family or parents couldnt get a hold on to you. i think the school board should really reconsider letting the public schools have cell phones.

Deckard, D-3 said...

well to sum up all of that, i can say that studies show that cellphone do actually help students in a class room rather then hinder them. If we gave it a try in our school, i think i'd be worth it. i know there have been alot of time when i used my phone to convert units, use the calculator, edit photos, and set reminders.

Asquith,C-3 said...

(Response to Lopez, M-1) So...why do private schools get to use cell phones and WE dont? Not fair..How are the rules and or circumstances any different for them? Why the special treatment, eh?

i think cell phones are a blessing and a curse to be used in school. They can be used for countless usefull things like taking notes (because alot of students text faster than they write), remembering homework assignments, and maybe even usint text messages to talk to the teacher without disturbing the rest of the class...However, i think that if we are allowed to use our phones to much then the temptation to become distracted with games or texting our friends. Also, yesterday my mom was reading something about how alot of students today are starting to use text lingo when writing serious papers,so if we start using cell phones in class i fear that this might sky-rocket and we will go from neat, formal papers to "lol, i thnk teh riter ment that she wuz :@ twrds her"

Weatherford, R-3 said...

Cell phones in the school setting would be ballin. For one, teachers could txt you the night before a major test or remind you of your homework. Some might be able to sychronize together so that way all that has to be done is the teacher change his/her calender on their phone and then its all gravy. Anywho, I vote yes. Plus, there's always the calculator tool that you can use. Also, taking pictures of the notes if you don't have enough time to copy them down or aren't fast enough. Matter of fact, the teacher could just take a picture of one copy and send it to everyone else. Ballin gravy if you ask me, ballin gravy.

this websit shows many diffrent reason oh why it is good to use your phone and school.
like being able to get your missing assignments and a txt. but the only problem is to me no matter what anyone could say it would never happen or work. i we all know its really not happening and Nacogdoches lol

i believe that cellphones should be used for school only in educational ways therefore no one could do any school inappropiate or even send any messages that would cause altercations between students heres a great site

Usage of a cell phone in class isnt ever neccessary cause if we were allowed to use them people wouldnt do anythng but tex, take pics, and bluetooth instead of doing whats important.... "YOUR WORK" yet i would still lyk the privelege of using 1.

Well how is it possible that private schools have access to pretty much everything else expect for the cell phone thing but why all of a sudden there comes a big change when new principles come in? I agree also there should be no argument about why students should be prevented from havein cell phones at schoo. You see most of the time teachers complain about us using the school phones and about how we dont show are parents anything well this would be a good way to prevent the usage of leaving from class an it would also keep our parents in formed during the day. For the simple fact most parents wounder about there child if they are ok an things like that!!! Cell phones are very useful, Why should teachers be allowed to use there phones during school even thought they are adults, what should it matter they say we are adults then they should trust us with are cell phones so that we can prove to them how helpful it can be in school!!!!

I don't think a REVOLUTION will be needed to make phones available but i do agree that the people in charge need to at least rethink their phone policy so we can use them productively at school.

Miller, J - 2 said...

garza i agree with your blog they definitely need to relax on their rules and think of a way to incorperate cell phones into learning but i allso hink that students would think it is ok to text and stuff like that, that would be a real distraction

they might keep the consequences if the rules are broken and the phones are used as a distraction

i think cell phone should be allowed in school because for expample if we have a project to today and we caint use the computer we could pull out our cell phone so the person could get on the internet to finish their school project, that way we wont have to worry on turning in something on time. but cell phones could also be a distraction sometimes. but i still think we should be allowed to bring them to school. it would be cool

I went to the site that Rudy blogged about...and i found it pretty interesting; but the top 10 list that they provided seems like a lot of problems could accompany some of the scenarios. It said that cell phones in the classroom could be used to access unlimited information, but how do the teachers restrict the access when its test time? People always misuse technology and abuse privileges. What i want to know is how do you keep the kids on track when they have the internet and sms text at their disposal (which would, of course, be permitted). How do you make sure that the kids use the gift in the correct way?

*It talks about that it is good to have students to use their cell phones and pagers at school just for if something bad happen they can use their cell phones and pagers to get help or anything else.*

I think using a cell phone in class is a dumb idea. for everyone who says you can copy your notes, seriously?? its kinda pointless, the teacher might as well just make you a copy, and besides notes are mainly you copying what your teacher says. Also using a your phone as a calculator is kinda pointless since the school already has em, and the phone calculator don't have half the stuff those calculators do. and besides who we kiddin? we'd just use em to text and what not...

Miller, J - 2 said...

allso on the site i found it stated that we should embrace cell phone tech and use it for school related things. but allso that brings me back to the distraction isue but some schools are taking everybodys cell phones up who will give them willingly to be picked up after school

Cole, S - 4 said...

I think that using cell phones in school is a good idea! You could use them in math class to help you solve math problems which would help alot of students in the long run.
The students could also use it for stuff such as research. They could get on it and find what they need and get off,but the bad thing about this would be that most students would try to sneak and check their texts!!
Another thing that makes this a bad idea is that some people cannot afford cell phones! If they cant afford cell phones it sets them away from the crowd and probably makes them look bad and people might make them feel bad.Or the problem could just be that your parents will not allow you to get a cell phone, then you have no way at all to get one!!!

here's a website that has both some reasons to have phones in schools and some reasons not

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BUE/is_14_135/ai_n18615745/

it talks about phones being useful in emergencies. forbidding phones doesn't stop people from doing illegal things, just changes how they do them.

i have an absolute agreement with Small,K (i wonder who that could be). some of us are poor you know! not all of us have money coming out of our butts like Donald Trump(of course, if we were like him and we could not understand how to use the phone, we would end up firing our phones and the people who sold us the phones!)! ^^

On the other hand though... Id have to dissagree to using cell phones in school. All they would do is cause to many distractions.

CELL PHONES SHOULD BE ALLOWED :)
I agree with cristian on tests take them away, but when your doing nothing then whats the harm. Not every teacher fills up every single minute of every single period of every single day. So if they let you use ipods whats the harm in cell phones most kids dont even make calls anymore mostly all about texting. :)

I like the site that my Bro Rudy posted, The top 10 list was ok but some of the things on there wouldnt have a strong enough arguement for the school board to prohibit cell phone use but they were pretty good so yuhhh good one Rudy!

Small,K-6 said...

For the people who talk about taking pictures of notes: My Brick has no camera. I know lots of newer phones have them, but mine isn't a newer phone. Would the school be willing to invest in getting me a camera so I'm on the same footing as everyone else?

What about 'texting notes' to the teacher? My texting plan is pretty expensive- one of those '15 cents to receive a text, and this many cents per character' Would the school be willing to pay for my texting plan?

Of course, I could always do things the old-fashioned way (copying notes from other people if I don't get them all, e-/snail mailing the notes/assignments to the teachers), but I wouldn't have the benefits everyone else does.

Besides, cell phones, I think, would be too distracting.

On the other hand, I'm all for allowing cells in school- just not as part of the curriculum. I think if students were allowed to have phones in school, and if they weren't taken up everytime it fell out of a bag/backpack/pocket, and were allowed to make emergency calls home out in the hall ways, there would be a lot less complaints against the rule. I probably wouldn't allow texting in class, though. That opens up all sorts of doors to cheating and unfairness.

lyles,m-6 said...

i agree with many of you.
i think cellphones should be allowed, with a few problems, but many good sides to it.

Rodriguez,A-2 said...

i think that cell phones can be very useful in the classroom..because not only can a student txt another student a question but one could also use our cell phones to research from the internet..i also agree with cristian that the only time a student should have their phone is when were taking a test..which some of my teachers already take up our phones for tests.

Allison Castellanos-6th Period

This website gives examples of schools that allows students to use cell phones during a school enviroment except for in class.
But it also gives expamples of schools that still abide by the "out of sight, out of mind," rule.

http://www.journalstar.com/news/opinion/mailbag/article_7dd5b4ec-963f-11de-a9b3-001cc4c03286.html

I read what Jacory had said about everyone not being able to afford a phone so if we were allowed to use phones in school, then it would be unfair to those who cannot have one. I was not even allowed to have a cell phone till i was 16. So eventhough i was already at a disadvantage with not having one, if we were to have them at school, i would definately feel like a loser.
Just saying.

Cell phones could be used in emergency situations, like if a stuudent were unresponsive, there could be a program with all medical information immediate contacts on hand with the students cell phone. Therefore they wouldnt have to go find it.

I cant really think of how using your cell phone could be beneficial in a school curriculum, but it is a neccesity in case of an emergency.
