Blog 9 - 11/2/09

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in!

Man . . . I cannot believe it's November already! Can you?

I want to thank yall for the discussion on cell phone technology in the classroom. Many of you found some sites I haven't seen before. I will be compiling a list and sending it on to Dr. Hutto, along with a link to the blog, later in the week.

Many of you also asked some great questions that I wish I knew the answer to. Why IS it that private schools have a tendency to integrate cell phone technology use before public schools? What IF we allow the use of the cell phone in classrooms and some people can't afford them? What do we do then? Provide them for those people? As school teachers and administrators we are having these discussions all the time. We will get it figured out, that much I can guarantee. I can also pretty well bet most of you will be gone from here when we do. Decisions here have to be made on data, and that data is just now beginning to become available.

In preparation of switching topics, this week let's look at sparkly new technology again. Yall already know my favorite sites for this:

http://www.yankodesign.com/

AND

http://www.productdose.com

Please don't stop on Page 1. Dig back a few pages and pick something cool. Preferably something that has something to do with technology.

Talk to me . . .

I think technology has come a long way and will continue to grow especially green wise(ewwwwwwwwwww!) Jk!! :) The disposable laptops are awesome because more people may buy them now and it saves materials. I absolutely love the harley davidson circa 2020 because of the design but it could be dangerous. Lastly the floating wireless speaker is pretty cool because its water proof, so pools would be more fun and running in the rain. HaHa!!!

I can't believe that it is November already either. This year is going by so fast and I can't believe. It's close to my wedding day.

Well I don't suppose I was here for the cell phone technology discussion, but I understand the questions that were asked..

All of those questions were great and I have been asking them for the longest time ever. Because the staff can walk around with their cell phones out and the students can't do the same thing. Well if the students aren't fortunate enough to have a cell phone then they probably can't afford one, but just because of that doesn't mean that the other students should get punished for having one. That is just my view on the whole cell phone thing.

Ok Mrs. L, have you ever thought of some idea that you wish you could design and manufacture? Well I did and someone has beaten me to the punch. I wanted to make a bath/shower that gives a real rain feel. It would be like you were outside and the rain wash jus falling on top of you. Well the Roca Active & Relax Bathroom does that. It still does have the control feature that my design was going to have and it is a tad bit different.

A big new trend in technology is focused on all things "Green." People are trying to rid the world of our old consumerist mindset, in doing so, they're attempting to reduces emissions and increasing the number of homes and businesses that recycle, thereby reducing the impact of carbon footprints on the environment. One of these modern designs that I found particularly interesting and potentially effective was the "NNew Can." Its basically a can that twists to both reduce size and encourage people to recycle. I think this is a very effective design.

I cant believe it is november either but unlike most people, november is one of my least favorite holidays... It is either too cold to go swimming, or too hot to wear shorts.... Weather can be soo bi-polar... Any way, about technology........ I was lookin through yanko yesterday in my free time and I happened to see a really cool device... I could not find in again but I happen to remember what it was... It was a paper shreddder that was a pearl white color with a light green recycle logo on it. Now besides the cool looks, it also had a special add on... It took the shreds from the paper that you just shredded and mixes it with this certain chemical that forms a type of paper machee. Oncce the shredder fills up compleetly, you open it up and out comes a little paper machee trash can that can also double as a stool. Neat huh? Whell that is what I wanted to write about..

i would talk alot more about how much i like this thing, but im not in a great mood, wont be for a while,i've lost someone very dear to me.(R.I.P Trace) :'(

I liked the Flip stacking personal fridge because it's useful whenever you get a lot of work, you dont really have time to go get up and grab a snack to eat. It also uses thermoelectric technology allowing it to work in any atmosphere and even upside down!!! So, whenever you are working hard and you get hungry or thirsty all you have to do reach in the minifridge and there you go

i thinks it's real cool how they tryna comr out with a disposable labtop... if it eve rcome out i'll be the first to buy it jus because its new and not that many people will have it... i bet its gone cost you an arm and a leg for it and i might just have to give it up...lol so if i walk well hop in your class with one leg and one arm you know why...lmmfao

Some of these ideas are just mindblowing. The NNew Can is so creative but the idea is so simply; who doesn't want pull tabs to be easier to open? Will post more later...

What I could really go for right now would be something along the lines of stress-relief. For the - if you'll excuse my language- crappiest of crappy days, one of those eye-poppy squeeze toys and bobbing punching bags with the stupid cartoon character faces just won't cut it, I don't think. Can I get an 'Amen' Cris-bon and Katy?

As for the designs on Yanko and Productdose, I found that the idea of the 'Tippy Clock' really interested me. Just tilt the clock to set it back or forward for DLST. The lack of numbers is probably the only thing that would make this thing work, though.

I also saw these absolutely adorable 'Panda Ear Buds', available at Fredflare.com for $15.

Ryano, I didn't see the HD2020, but I'll go seek it out.

Dominique, many times over the course of my life I've thought about something that needed to be designed to make our lives easier only to find it in the clear aisle of Bed, Bath and Beyond years later. Maybe when I have those ideas I should just act on them and get them into production so *I* can be the one making that moolah.

Charnae . . . wedding?!?

Travis, I'm with ya on the bipolar weather.

Miranda, sorry about your loss. I'm here if you need an ear. Or a shoulder. I have two of each. LOL

Katie S. . . . amen on the mind-bogglingly (sp?) stressful days.

Disposable Paper Laptops sound like an interesting product. It might be very affordable, but how exactly does it work? I see its layout and it sounds really simple, the multi-layers make it fairly easy to replace damaged parts. So it sounds neat, but it may be too good to be true to me.

ScribbleBot sounds like a great art tool for the drawing impaired, kinda like me, but the only thing is that it said to download images from the internet; I have trouble with figuring connections out so it may not work out for some people and leave them frustrated.

Other than that, I like it. The Killer Engagement Ring is awesome looking, I would not mind being proposed to with one of those babies, although whoever gives it to me better be careful, haha ^_^;

And to KT S. Amen sister >w<

Wow, amazing new stuff!

I really like the floating globe, and apperently, even if you tip it on it's side, IT STAYS INSIDE THE FIELD! Crazy stuff!

Also the new Digital Manhole is simply amazing, when you step on it, it gives you directions....Oh....and the disposable lap tops should be really neat, just really interested to see how they are going to get more than 10 apps on a paper thin computer, that also has to project it's interior....

robinson,s-1 said...

One of the cool designs i found that is also "green" and good for the environment, is the recycle origami...what it does is it basically serves as a trash can, but instead of just letting that paper sit there and eventually be wasted, it uses the scrap paper to make something, like another trash bin. I think its a cool that the paper we throw away can immediately be used for something else

On a side note, the new Aston Martin Volare is awesome.

Oh, I just gotta love that Solar Powered Window Air Conditioner!!! It's like amazing in every way. And the bet part, it's solar powered!!!
The d°light Huggable Pillow Looks so cute!! A pillow that glows, how cool is that? No more need for lamps.
I really don't see the point of the disposable paper laptop, it's strange on my opinion.I'm afraid that it'll break! It's looks fragile.
Lastly, The Waste Paper Recycle Trash Bin!! Yay, for recycling!! Greatest idea yet. Converting useless paper into cup!! ^^

Baker,M-1 said...

First. Lets start with my future mode of transportation:

Harley Davidson Circa 2020

I will get that at any cost. And I do mean ANY. This is one sleek is awesome. To bad that in the post, they spelled helmet wrong.

Second we have the some from the most popular theme of 2009- Recycling.

First we have a cardboard laptop. Does anybody but me see the MAJOR firehazard in that?

Then we have the Recycle Origami. At first, when i just looked at the pic, it looked like you took old paper and made a cup out of it. Eww. But when i read it i realized it turns all that trash into a trash bin. Neat.

And last, the CUTEST thing in the entire world (drum roll please):

TWEENBOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
The were so cute, Im gonna post a link to the original site (which isnt blocked, yay XD

http://www.tweenbots.com/

These are little robot that move in a straight line. They got placed in NYC with little flags that said, "I'm a Tweenbot. I'm trying to find my way to (insert place here). Can you help me?

Not surpriseingly, (because they are so cute XD) they all made it to their destinaton without any problems. I dont care if it doesnt do anything, i want one, I Want One, I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!! XD

Trikosko, M-1 said...

The disposable laptop seems pretty cool, but I don't think I understand it completely. Do you rip off the covering when you want to replace it or just throw the whole thing away entierly? Either way it seems pretty neat and strange to have something so complex made out of cardboard.

The Step Onto The Manhole is a great design but also not a very smart design. If they have digital manhole like that in Manhattan, there will be thousands of tourist standing in line to step on the mnahole for direction info.

wow its amazing how we can create all this new technology and have problems with the economy seriously but, thats just my opinion. i really like all this new stuff but, we should first take care of the stuff that is hurtin all of us. ( cough cough economy cough)lol. its almost the end of the year to gosh im feeling old already nest thing you know ill be using a cane.

Goff,R-2 said...

Jiwoon Park & Kwenyoung Choi have created an idea that could really help the world in future trash problems. they invented the Twsit Can, a soda can that twists into a crushed form to take up less room in the trash can. they said that the Twist Can can fit 3 times more cans in a trash can than if they are not crushed.
I beleive that the technological world could really benefit from this, because if they could make the can without useing as many fossil fuels, then we could be be more focused on the achievements ahead of us rather than trying to find ways to unblock the sun from the mountains of garbage.
brnaching off from this idea-- if every soda maker in the world would use a can like this, there would be no need(or less of a need) for us to go into space and live while robots clean of the earth so it is livable again(AKA Wall-e).
Because the enviornment is faced with so many harmful effects of the human race today, we need to think of everything we can to be ale to help preserve it as long as we possibly "Can". im tired of New York dumping its garbage into the ocean and polluting the oceans as well as killing all of the wildlife that lives there.
But anyway...Jiwoon Park & Kwenyoung Choi have created a revolutionary invention that will not only benefit mankind but more importantly, the wildlife and enviornment around us.

I love november!! The weather is amazing!! About the technology i found this interesting globe design. Its called the Levitating Globe and it has a built in computer chip and ajusts to atmospheric changes and it comes with a power supply and spins while levitating. How cool is that?! I've always found an interest in globes for some odd reason so that caught my eye real quick! That one would be way better than my small one that does not levitate might i add.

The 90 degree charger has a great idea to save energy and is a great way to charge your devices. The charger is able to go anywhere and is battery powered. Simply plug your device in, turn the dial like a timer and wait for it to complete its circuit. You have saved energy and charged your device in those simple steps. Our technology gets more advanced every day, who knows what will come next.

I'm a sucker for tea sets; I have two at home that I don't even use, but I can't help but be compelled by the simplistic beauty and elegance that they hold. A tea set in itself just pushes forth images of girls and women on couches and stools dressed in fluffy frills and dresses with laced gloves and curly hair with ribbons...either way.

That being said, I love all of the tea stuff I see everytime I go to yanko. I am not alone in my love for tea sets! The cha.t Tea Set looks really neat. I like how it's very sleek and simple, but I love the genius behind it: the tray heats it. That's just...I can't comprehend the convience behind that. On another note of my odd love for all things dealing tea sets, the only product from productdose.com that caught my eye was the unbelievably cute upside tea cup lamp.

Moving along to more practical designs, I very much so liked the "Eco Sign" manhole thingie. That seemed very useful, and I love how it is powered. It's good to know that there are people out there recognizing our need to push away our current resources that will (eventually) run out and/or pollute our air.

Another that caught my eye was the eat with your glasses thing. I absolutely love Japanese and Chinese food, so I'm pretty skilled with chopsticks, but this idea is kind of odd. Practical, yes; odd, yes. I don't think I would use it. I believe the chopsticks could get lost from the glasses, or the glasses would break and you wouldn't be able to eat with your chopsticks.

Well the stuff on these sites just keeps getting cooler...or I keep getting nerdier. Probably both. Anyway, being a Superman fan, I really liked the crystal keys. I don't really see the point of it (unless you think of every crystal as having a unique facet/prism pattern) but it would be super cool to say "One sec. Let me find my crystal." lol But I also like the water-saving bricks. They would involve a an intricate little tunnel system for the water to trickle down into whatever you need the water for. It could be saved for irrigation or sewage or anything. I'd be a little concerned about what they're made of and whether they would acutally end up rotting away, but other than that, they're a really cool, convenient way to help out the environment. Oh. and the little MP3 player speaker thing that follows you around is really cute. I want one of those to follow me around in my water-saving brick, crystal-locked house.

This is a baby bottle made to attract ultraviolet sunrays. The top of the bottle screws into the bottom also and the sun hits it. The sun's hot rays kill any bacteria or viruses that may be on the top of the bottle. I think thats really cool because you dont have to spray anything on it at all! The sun itself kills all the bacteria!

Besides wondering what would happen if I stepped onto a manhole and fell in, I don't really think much about the random hole in the ground, but the new manhole on Yankodesign actually seems like it could be more useful than what it was used for before. Not only does this new manhole give directions to the nearest bus or train station, but it also gains its power from rain water, which would definitely help the environment. I hope this new invention works out, but I see why people may still have some doubts, such as putting this new manhole technology on manholes in the middle of a busy street. This would obviously not be a good idea. I guess they will have to be strategically placed around a city in order to actually benefit others. Either way, I pretty excited to see this invention actually happen.

Sampietro, M-3 said...

I have to say once again that I feel like half of the things shown on yankodesign aren't even considered technology, at least by me...anyway, upon viewing this weeks designs, I discovered a rather humorous comment about the "Super Sexy Bathroom," a bathroom which functions as both an exercise room and opens up to reveal a bath. No toilet was included in the picture, and one person commented, "I guess super sexy people want to pretend that they don't use the toilet." Also, once again, Mia has something cynical to say...HOW LAME IS THE CARVING OUT A USB RELATIONSHIP?!?! This is a device where couples can carve eachother a USB device so both people in the realtionship can have a tangible piece of the other. Well, I think that it's TERRIBLY lame, but I am probably ranked as the 1st most cynical person in the world. On a positve note, I do always like the designs for modern furniture. I think it's very beautiful and interesting. If I had money, I'd probably buy it...

One more product i found really interesting was called Repeat...its basically a squishy, colorful wristband that prevents children with autism from developing negative recurrent habits. As you may know, children with autism tend to have problems with self-destructive repetitive habits, like rocking or bobbing the head, biting or scratching themselves, or in some more severe cases, banging their heads or other body parts on furnature. Repeat is an experimental device that encourages the child to incorporate the squishy, pain-proof wristband into these habits, helping to prevent injury or damage to the child. Designs like these are what we need, things that are shiny AND helpful, rather than just another asinine piece of technology. I found this very innovative and revolutionary in the field of helping children with autism cope with their disorder.

1) I think the idea of the bathroom that can also be used as an excerise room (or anything else really) is wonderful and saves space. Whenever you want to take a shower you just push a button and the floor sinks in. The things is that this will take awhile to get used to.

2) floating globe = cool.
3) the bricks that funnel the water toward the plants. I definetly need those for my house. (because the plants near the house keep dieing, I wonder if it is because I usually forget to water them??)

Hey, does anyone read the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld? What do you guys think about the technology in those books- Hoverboards, Hovercars, eyescreens (like the contacts discussed in an earlier blog), smart matter that basically replicates any material around it...? I think it sounds cool, personally.

Mrs. L: The Uglies series (Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras) is pretty low-level writing (in my humble opinion) but it features a lot of this 'shiny new technology' that you like us blogging about, if you'd ever feel like checking it out. The design I was looking at was a twistable can called the 'NNew Can.' Basically, after you're done drinking the drink, the twistable design makes it to where you can twist your can which makes it a whole lot smaller. This idea would most likely encourage people not to litter and actually throw away their cans. Not only that but now there would be much more space in trash cans and so on...

This can also features a new type of lid called the universal can lid. I'm surprised something like this hasn't come out yet for almost all the canned drinks. The only difference with this new lid is a bump on the end to help you open it much easier. Great idea

The disposable laptop really caught my attention, pretty, pretty cool hahaha. though the "sexy shower" idea... not so much into it, just seems pointless

These inventions are pretty useful. The manhole seems to be a great asset that we could have for tourists in the bustly city of Nacogdoches. But it would be very helpful in a larget city such as Houston or Dallas. One of the problems with it though might be that so many people might want to use it so therefore it could cause crowding on the streets.
The bathroom is my favorite though.itd be nice to watch a movie while taking a relaxing shower, and i agree with Rudy. Finding Nemo is awesome :) unless he was being sarcastic, and therefore, Ill just say nevermind. but isnt that what a living room is for, so maybe people wouldnt turn into prunes?

That little tank robot/music player thing looked really stupid. Why would you need and music player on treads that talks to other music players on treads. But that super-sexy shower thing looked realy cool.

The Blowfly – Flying Alarm Clock by Ena Macana is kinda cool, its on one of the very last pages. Its cool because its a better way of waking you up, i've experienced the turning off the alarm and falling back asleep then getting screamed at by your mom feeling before because i'd be late for school, well this would get rid of this, it is a better way of waking you up.

Disposable laptop? DISPOSABLE laptop? That is so... pointless. Who wants a laptop which dissolves if it is humid? I don't want to be worried about losing my computer if my bathroom door is open during a shower. Besides that, the wiring would be a nightmare. Paper doesn't conduct well, therefore when your computer went poof, you would be left with a soggy mass of paper surrounding wiring. Why on earth did someone think this was a good idea??

I think the real lifesaver ring is pretty cool. the gps impbedded in it would save a bunch of lives and also the fact that it can produce heat to keep the victim warm is a great idea. The little pockets for iteams would be just like a survival kit. I bet if this was manufactured it would save lots of lives.

i have to say, the disposable laptop thing, is stupid and has no purpose, however the all in one credit thing would be very useful, and prolly wouldnt be too hard to use.

Sadly none of these itmes seem particularly interesting or useful (well, except for the water powered calculator, which is interesting but overall pretty pointless).

i think without technology life will be boring. technology will continue to grow all around the world. if the school decides to let us use our cell phone and other people dont have one i think that should be there parents problem. the school shouldnt have to provide them with an cell phone.
