Blog 30 - 4/19/10

Hey Homies!

You know how last week we talked about 3D coming to our living rooms? I would like to explore the ways in which 3D has changed over the years. There have been many technological advances from the 3D movies of old (with the horrible paper glasses with one red eye and one green eye) to the new 3D (where we get to wear cool looking shades that just appear to be gray).

Where did the red and green plastic lenses go? Why don't we need those anymore?

Back in the day when 3D first began to get popular, it made people nauseated. I don't know about you, but I can think of no worse Friday night date than being stuck in a movie theater with a bunch of barfing people! In fact, one of the first reviews I read of Avatar was from someone who had gone to see it in IMAX 3D and got lightheaded and felt they were going to pass out in the theater. Thankfully, that's not the *normal* feeling you get from 3D anymore and was probably a product of that particular viewing being 3D AND IMAX.

So read up chickadees. See what you think about it. Answer one of these two questions for credit this week: 1) where do you think this 3D technology will end up? OR 2) how do you think this will change moviemaking in general?

Talk to me . . .

CrystalEyes shutter glasses may in fact be a great in enhancement for today's society maybe even if somehow they can make improvements to the crystal eyes shutter glasses that you can also have a spike of correction of vision then it would probably target more buyers because it would not only show 3D objects but also allows you to visual see better if that becomes real i will surely be in line to buy a pair

The coolest thing about this to me is the technology involved in the stereoscopy that produces a 3D image to the human perception. The complementary color anaglyphs (most common form of 3D) employ the use of complementary colors naturally filtered by the human eye. There's an idea called the tristimulus theory that involves the photoreceptors of the human eye (which are called cone cells)that basically pick up three different wavelengths, producing red, green and blue colors; this theory employs the simultaneous projection of dual-images, one which is inlayed with cyan and one is inlayed with red, causing the image to appear to have depth to the human eye. One eye (left) receives the cross-spectrum color information, while the other (right)sees the monochromatic image (this is where the "depth" comes from).

Ok, so that was my nerdy explanation to my answer to the question...haha (yes it was necessary).

Anyways, I think that in the next few years we're going to see a surge in technology like this (which will all, undoubtedly, make me wanna hurl). In older sci-fi movies, there was a huge thing about "holograms" and cool technology that we would surely have by the year 2000 (haha, right). I see this turning into a huge corporate competition to see which company can produce the most efficient, puke-inducing 3D-at-home images, and who can take this technology the farthest. And let me just say, I am not excited.

Question 1:

Though Im sad to admit, I believe this technology is going to effect most or all our entertainment in a while. I belive eventually since they have the technology to have 3D TVs without glasses that they will eventually have 3D movies without glasses. This will make the experience more enjoyable for movie goers! The glasses cause an inconvenince for people that already wear glasses, has this not effected anyone else? The good thing is this technology can only get better, and (hopefully) cheaper. I can see 3D televison shows being a hit, but that is probably not going to happen for awhile because the cost would be outrageously (is that how you spell it?) high.

you know,i really like the fact that we've come far enough to have 3D glasses that you can reuse,
there for,making them enviromentally friendly.
i mean, with the amount 3D movies that've been coming out,we need reusable 3D glasses.but,it'd be nice if we could buy some of those crystaleye 3D glasses here,so everytime we went to the movies,we didnt have to pay an extra 3 dollars everytime we went,we could just use our own glassses! but to answer the question of how far i think 3D glasses will come,i think they'll come very far, like maybe, not having to wear the 3D glasses at all, that'd be an amazing advancement in the three-D technology right there.i mean, why dont they try it? it'd save us some money.but what if they're money hungry :O that'd be rather bad.oh well(: maybe someday!

I think the 3D technology will change the way movies are made, for one reason the 3D making of the movie will cost a lot more than a regular movie would. I also think that the 3D T.v. will become very popular, because usually you have to go to the movies but now people can watch them at the comfort of there own home.

Morrison,K-1 said...

3D videocameras, really? It's just that, some people can't even afford the cameras that are normal right now. It could be interesting, but I think it would cause some annoyances. Giving people headaches and such. Though home movies would be much more interesting, or more painful to watch. By the look of things the 3D movies will be coming into our homes to stay before too long, well at least until the companies manage to make 4D happen easily. Either way, I don't really care.

I have read about the glasses and have also kept up with it in the media and all,but to answer the first question, I really think that we will be able too keep on going and apply the 3d realm to several other areas. For example, we have 3D movies and we are working on 3D games, but what about completely interactive 3D games, Were you can pick up the object. Not just as in picking up something like you do in the Natal project, but as in be able to see the object by your side and pick it up.

I have talked about this topic with my other nerdy friends, and we always end up in the same area... A 3D virtual world.... But that itself is a very long topic and I have no time to explain. All I can say for now, is that I myself expect 3D interactive games to come out by 2017... Atleast that is the time my nerds and I agreed on. ><

I think that 3D will go everywhere. Heres a future clip: Grandparents going to be I remeber back in the day we had 2D and when we went to see a movie in the cinema which is what we called it back then. We had to where them glasses, but we didnt have it as bad as our parents because they had to wear paper glasses with one blue eye and one red eye. Nope we just had to wear glasses that were like sunglasses. But now yall dont need none of that yall just go home and watch it on your tv no glasses no nothing yall dont know how easy you get it to us. Hey you bad kids quit playing with my hoover wheelchair. So yeah I think that its going to replace 2D all together like they have with the VCR, but just wait after they converted the world with 3D there gonna be like what about 4D OMGOSHHH.

Padilla, E - 6 said...

ok so 3D movies are already kind of a big hit but 3D tvs would be a huge hit. i think this 3D thecnology will get far but it might not be as big as a hit because of its price but it will get somewhere eventually.

ques. 1
i think pretty soon movie producers will make all movies come out in 3d only because people seem more interested in watching 3d movies..then i think video games will be next cuz every one would love to play a 3d video game..then i think everything will be on 3d..then someone will invent something that is even better than 3d

Jim Taylor said...

Question 2:
Ok so 3d is already a big deal in theaters. Almost every Disney movie is in 3d now, and once someone films a live action movie in 3d, the entire industry will be flooded with 3d movies, and it will quickly become the norm.

Tutt, S - 7 said...

I really don't like 3-D technology much at all. It doesn't really work for me. and everytime I look at my tv I'd really not like to put a pair of glasses on. On a good note I think it's pretty cool that producing a 3-D image to the human perception like in the stereoscopy is amazingly awesome.

Long, W - 7 said...

well i think that 3d is going to take over majority of movie theatures because now that the avatar showing was a success some may not like it but alot of people like it and the person who made avatar said hes going to start making all his movies in 3d which means one thing its going to grow and before we know it it will have taken over our world its starting already with the tv that shows in 3d but it is a exspensive process so maybe it wont get to far we can only hope lol

Fedun, M-7 said...

I think that this 3D technology will lead to more and more interations with the audiences. Kinda like the 4D movie at Disney World or where ever. I think more and more things will be added to get audiences activly involved with enterainment rather than simply watch it. With multiple sences emersed in feelings, these movies will become more and more realistic.

Clark,A-7 said...

i think that moviemaking is going to end up catering to 3D in some aspects. i think that movie makers will go out of their way to add stuff specifically for the 3Dness of the movie, adding nothing whatsoever to the story of the movie. it may very well end up destroying the plot of movies in the future. movies nowadays are becoming more concerned with special effcts than with plot and the overall movie. it is sad really

Hughes, T - 7 said...

Question 1.) I think that over time, if 3d can be developed into something thats not as expensive, it will definately have a bigger audience. The same will happen if the no-glasses technology is developed into something more available and less expensive.

I'm guessing that this wjole 3D technology is going to be pretty big in the future. First movies, then television, after that video games. I wonder what's next? I wouldn't say that there's anything else to turn to 3D, since that's where we're leading to.

Szu-yung said...

I think this 3D technology will end up on every screens & monitors by the end of 2050. The media will be shown in all 3-dimensional

Trikosko, M-1 said...

2) I think this will change movimaking by causing all movies to be 3D, so that they can charge higher ticket prices. Just look at Avatar, it wouldn't have earned as much if the tickets cost less. I don't feel like 3D is necessary for everything, but thats probably the way things will be eventually.

robinson,s-1 said...

Where do i think this technology is going??
Well we have fully conquered 2D and cannot do much more with it. 3D is becoming more and more popular and its technology is only increasing, but eventually this technology too will be beat to the ground. I mean come on, having images pop out at you can only make your head feel like its gonna explode so many times before it gets old. And it will get old, it always does. It may take a while, and there may be many advances until then, (3D games, etx.) but it will die out eventually and something cooler will take its place. So what is the next step to take? 4D!! YAY!! now we can have images pop out, have the seats move around, AND have air blow and water drop or squirt on us all while enjoying some popcorn and drinks with friends.(thats sarcasim by the way, in case you didnt catch it) i miss the days with just regular movies in 2D, i have no desire to see movies in 3D, and especially in 4D. But im afraid that is the direction we are heading...cant wait. ugh

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

This is way too early for tech like this to be out right now. I mean we still have numerous bugs in the tech, and we are pushing for the tv's to be released in the consumer market. I'm pretty sure that we are going to have numerous complaints and recalls. I could wait a year or 2 before this tech comes out. I'm pretty sure the makers think the end of the world is coming. Thats probably why they are pusing it. 3-D seems more appropriate for theaters and home ones as well, but not something that I'd want in every room of my house that has a television. Seems like I'd get a sensory overload. I prefer HD if anything.

Brookshire, B-1 said...

I belive that 3D will completely change movie making in the future. When this technology is mastered I belive almost every movie will be in 3D. The only correction that needs 2 b made 2 3D technology is the damage the glasses can cause.

jeffress,r-1 said...

1) I believe that 3-D technology will be intertwined into every form of audio tech or regular tech. They are talking about 3-D being in many video games to come, which could grow the gaming industry even more. I feel that new computers will have 3-D technology, making text easier to read and enhancing the design. Also reading glasses could become 3-D in the near future and those who are far sighted could see bigger text.

villanueva,f-2 said...

3d will change movie makig so much now it would take more money to make the movies

well me i rather not wear glasses i want a tv that doesnt need those things see if it were a real 3d screen u wounldnt need to wear those glassses and i mean 3d glasses have moved up in this world they made them better and cooler than before but i dnt know ther is something about them that i dnt like em

Abernathy, J-2 said...

All this 3D technology and advancements is kinda confusing. I remember Spy Kids coming out in 3D and I thought it was cool...but I did get a headache. But since then they have made the glasses better and alot more stuff is 3D. So in the future I think they are going to somehow make it to the point that we won't even need glasses to see 3D.

1. I think 3D will eventually become a standard when watching tv. I think back to the "BIG SWITCH" where the cable company said that all the televisions will go digital. they made it seem as if everyone needed it otherwise you could never watch tv again, that what i think will happen with this 3D technological jibberish.

2. As far as 3D and movies i think it will cause movie makers to take the extra mile and go 3Demensional with there movies too. And the same think i think will apply to this situation where every movie you buy will no longer be 2D, i pretty sure some movie "freaks" will like that because of all the action (if there is any).

Avatar definitely sparked a 3D pattern when so many saw the success with it. Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon...both brand new 3D movies after Avatar. And I can't blame them, Avatar was simply beautiful in 3D - mind you, I didn't see it in 2D, but my friend said that 3D was better.

A few years ago they did a "totally cool and awesome remake" of Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D!! Ohmygoshhhh!!! No. No, it wasn't cool or totally awesome. The only "cool" 3D effect really was this jack in the box pumpkin pops out, and that was about it. I felt like I paid extra for the 3D ticket and glasses for nothing.

Avatar, on the other hand, really sucessfully managed it well. There wasn't really that "huge" effect that made the crowd gasp and move back because there's a knife jabbing out of the screen, but in the exotic world they were in, just little details of the environment would kind of pop out. It was really pretty. My friend who saw both versions said that the colors were also more vibrant, but I'm not sure if that was the 3D technology.

My overall point is that I can see that 3D is becoming more popular with movies, but with 3D, it's crucial to not only master it but also make it its money's worth. Avatar was worth the extra money, Nightmare Before Christmas wasn't.

3D has never been something i was jus into but i see it going in a positive direction for awhile. i think that eventually 3D LCD's will be a bust and peope will get tired of them or just get tired of the glasses and losing them etc. I see alot of more movies being 3D which is already starting to happen. Me personally i will never get onto the 3D fan bus, i'll just stick with HD television instead.

I think 3D technology will keep advancing and eventually it will be as common as HD or iPhones. You will be a LOSER if you don't have
3D TV at home! I believe they will keep advancing it to where it won't make people sick to watch it or something of that sort. When the iPhone first came out everyone thought it was stupid, but now EVERYONE and their dog has one. In my opinion, the same thing will happen with 3D technology.

3D technology is going to change movie making in many diffrent ways...nobody is going to be paying attention to what the movies are about anymore they're just going to want to see the tech. that was put into creating it...

Sampietro, M-3 said...

030493Even though it's rather expensive to make 3D movies, they also bring in a lot of money to the movie industry. I mean, come on. We all saw how popular Avatar was and how much money it made. Now, would it have been near as popular if it had not been 3D? I don't think so. More and more movies are being made 3D, and I think that there are many more to come. The movie industry has seen how popular 3D is, and they will most likely be willing to spend the extra money to bring in all the money that 3D movies make. Americans like 3D, and they want more. They are willing to pay the extra charge to see 3D movies. So, I think in the near future, most movies will be made 3D. As more are made, they will find cheaper ways to make movies 3D, audiences will have to pay less, and everyone gets what they want...except me...I hate 3D.

The glasses(no one wants to have to wear these every time they watch tv) 3rd. There aren't very many 3D movies to WATCH! ...who wants to buy a tv that is compatable with only a few movie choices...Unless its Avatar. I like Avatar....Maybe they will start to make more 3D video games

3D movies are a big hit, but as far as "3Dness" changing the film-making industry; i'm sure that directors will try to make future films more interactive as far as having an actor doing something towards the camera, but doesnt that kind of take away from the film? -3D movies can kiss my butt

Garza, G-4 said...

i think that although there are many different kinds of glasses for 3d viewing none of them are exactly perfect. i mean, the shutter glasses might not work if action on screen is faster than the shutter blinks and all of them cause majority of people to get headaches. i cant wait till they perfect tvs so you can watch 3d without those pesky glasses.

i see 3d technology going far. Although i don't support it, nor care for it, it's still definately going places. Most movie companies like disney and dreamworks for example are producing mainly 3d and they probably will alaways produce in 3d for now on. there are now 3d tv's out and a couple of games in 3d. soon there will be 3d cameras and laptops..Basically 3D is what's new and in and it's gonna go big or go home!

Cole, S - 4 said...

I think this technology will end up everywhere that it can.I think that pretty soon you will be able to do anything in 3D!This will suck for me though because I really dont like this little 3D all over the place idea!!!

The shutter glasses are a really cool, i find my eyes trying to reajust everytime a new scene comes up, if these can get rid of that, and help me keep up, then great!
One question though, what would these glasses run to produce? I know many people keep their glasses, because they feel like they should get something for spending $15 a ticket, but if these things take a small fortune to produce, there's gonna be a problem.

I hope that someday they'll have the technology to actually make it feel like we're /in/ the movie, instead of us watching it. I know that 3D already does that to an extent, with things flying at our face and whatnot, but I think it can get a little more realistic than that (without the 4D water/air/scent effects) I also think it's a possibility that /every/ new movie will be in 3D, and things like 2D movies will be a rarity... Wait... that sounds like the present...

chitopina-2 said...

I dont think there will be a limit to 3-D technology, they're gonna milk this cow for all its worth. Its finally catching on to where people are getting it in there TV's, so whats next?? Maybe cell phones! Any thing that has a screen will get a taste of the 3-D technolgy. I also think that now, every movie will be in 3-D and I hope that never happens because it wont be exciting anymore if every movie that comes out has someone popping out at you. Unfortunately i think thats the way things are going.

Eventually we will be all 3d our tvs our games our bilboards. Well, I believe that Pixar said something about making all of their films from now on in 3D, so many more movies will be in 3D very soon. I've seen about 10 movies at the movies in 2010 and only 1 of them (The Bounty Hunter) was in 2D The rest were 3D. So what i'm saying is that soon all the movies will be in 3D hopefully soon they'll be able to do it without the RealD glasses.

3D honestly does not interest me that much...I would just rather watch the movie, than actually "be apart of it". Which is where I think this 3D movie making is going. I think they will slowly progress to a program that reacts with the viewer more, and overall, will scare me to death.

Goff,R-2 said...

For future moviemaking i feel like 3D will happen more often, but i dont feel like it will be in every single movie. because the process takes so much time and MONEY movie companies wont be as inclinded to make expensive movies as non expensive movies that take less time which means more money quicker.
Because 3D movies cost so much to see, people will want to go to the movies less and wait to rent them. $10.75 to see a movie is too freaking expensive, especially in our jacked up economy. Movie makers will soon find that people will go to fewer movies when they are only offered expensive 3D movies. therefore they will find it necessary to make more movies in 2D...

Anyway, I do see this changing moviemaking in general. Pretty soon I think most to all movies are going to be filmed in 3D. I guess this is good news for camera/lens companies? Unfortunately, I'm not too excited about watching a thousand movies like Avatar or that Monsters vs. Aliens thing...

cortes, j - 3 said...

The idea of improving 3D technology is awsome, but i cant help but think that it will be very expensive. Going to the movies to see a 3D movie is more expensive than seeing a regular 2D movie. i just dont see the point in seeing the same movie for extra money

Padilla, J - 3 said...

I hate that all the movies I want to see are in 3D! Unless the movie is something I REALLY REALLY want to see, there is no way I'm paying an extra $2 for 3d glasses I already have. I don't understand why people need to watch movies in 3D. There are some movies that just wouldn't make sense in 3d like dramas. I hate when movie companies convert movies that were originally made for 2d to 3d in order to jack up prices and make more money! By doing that, the story of the movie gets lost in the pointless 3d effects. 3D will make a movie's purpose less effective to the audience.
