Blog 3 - 9/20/10

Howdy Folks! Thanks for logging in!

Continuing our discussion of advancing medical technology, I want to take a look at this inventor named Dean Kamen. He was approached by the Department of Defense and asked to make a prosthetic arm that would more closely mimic the movements of a real arm with real fingers on the end of it.

To that end, he invented this arm which he named the Luke Arm (as in Skywalker). I want to watch a short video about Kamen from the TED conference, and then I want you to go read about the arm.

http://spectrum.ieee.org/biomedical/bionics/dean-kamens-luke-arm-prosthesis-readies-for-clinical-trials

Please spend Tuesday reading so that we can be prepared to blog on Thursday.

In order to receive credit for this weeks blog you may do one of two things:

1) Talk about where you can see this technology going. How can we benefit from this type of technology in the future?

2) Find other articles on either Dean Kamen or the Luke arm and tell us what those articles said. When you use resources that I don't send you to, you have to give me the link to YOUR article. Also? Once an article has been quoted 5 times it can't be used again.

Talk to me . . .

Hey that prosthetic arm looks awesome, its like an extra arm or an even longer arm to reach "other" places you cant reach. I dont know exactly how it works but this technology is way too advanced for us so lets just hope that nothing happens that will unbalance us for awhile...

wallace, o-1 said...

I think the prosthetic arm is one of the biggest advancements we've had in medical technology in a long time because i think it can really give the people who have missing arms the real feel of an arm again.

baeza, n - 1 said...

I think that the hand would help alot of people.
But wat if some people can't afford it and they really need it? Would it b too heavy to carry it?
Because it's too expensive for people to buy it so yeah it would be helpful but for the rich people not for people who don't have more than 30 million dollars!!!!

santoyo, l - 1 said...

I think this technology might be the next biggest thing in prostehic limbs, but I also think is really expensive so i don't see it going any where in our messed up economy. The luke arm would help soldiers that lose their arms, but since obama is bringing them back I think we won't need the luke arm.

Does anyone know how the arm is controlled? cuz on the article it said something about using your toes, but in the video it look like he just used his mind like a normal arm.

stegall, j - 1 said...

I think it was very nice of Dean Kamen to create such helpful and useful arm for the disable people..just thinking if you didn't have an arm you would really love what he has created its just like using your real arm

vazquez, j - 1 said...

Nora, the thing weighs 3 pounds. Its designed specificly to make sure people keep wearing it and still be confortable while performing daily activities so it doesnt get sweaty.

yancey-z-1 said...

I thank it is cool just look at it. Dont you wont one? Plus it is much better than the old hock for a hand.So I hope the price is low so ever one that needs one can get on.

ok thank vsquez kid:)

I think the prosthetic arm is awesome, and i think its funny that its named after star wars. its pretty cool that its so advanced and robotic. Its even cooler that peole with missing arms can have a prosthetic one that works like a normal arm.

baeza, n - 1 said...

i think its gonna be expencive cuz just to make it they need umm 3.4 million dollars!

baeza, n - 1 said...

ok ok jose calm down ill member that!! hahaha or ill probly for get Jose Vazques!!

juarez, a - 1 said...

I actually think this prostetic arm is going to be a success but like nora said it might be a little to expensive. Would the insurance pay for some of the cost? if it does then i think its good i mean it can do a lot more than other prostetic arms cant do. It would give the person who doesnt have an arm the pleasure of trying to be normal agian or living a normal lifestyle.

fuentes, m - 1 said...

i think this arm is cool, cause i know if i lost an arm, i'd want a fake one. well it's cool and stuff, but it's really noisy. like if i saw someone at the store with some loud robotic noise moving their arm, that would be creepy you know? oh well, i'm pretty sure that aint stopping an amputee from getting an arm. although, this arm is way advanced for our technology and i can see amputees buying this.

the prostetic arm itself seems AMAZING im just conserned about how much $$$ its gunna cost to have one ya know? i have absolutely no idea where technology is going because its always changing! and it will most deffinately benefit us in the future because every time something new comes out a newer better version of it comes out!

weaver, c - 1 said...

i think the prosthetic arm is a great invention becuase the people who has lost a arm or both can fell like they have arms again and it will help them alot, they will be able to pick up jus about anything, move it jus like a real arm.

fuentes, e - 1 said...

I bet amputees would love this idea of this prosthetic arm because its the closest thing you canget to a real arm. I know if i didn't have an arm I would want to get one!!!!!

Lanham said...

Has anybody besides me wondered how much Dean Kamen made personally for this invention?

blank, d - 2 said...

Well it pretty amazing but just hope its not really loud

chitopina-2 said...

I think the arm is so "fresh" If it turns out to be the way i want it to be then I might just accidently cut my arm off. It would be even cooler if the robot arm could make you super strong! think about teh possibilities! A bunch of terminators walking around!

vega, u - 2 said...

Now that we have robotic limbs, maybe we can have robotic organs or something. Having these cyborg people around is also pretty cool to see. Ever seen "Surrogates?" Yeah, kind of like that, but whith actual people instead of puppets.

Rodriguez,A-2 said...

i think this prosthetic arm is a really good idea..yea it might be a little loud but it does almost everything a real arm can do..and it would look just like a real arm if they covered it in like somethiing that looked like skin like the dr said they would do in the future

Pina, R-2 said...

I think the prosthetic arm is a great idea, but you have to think about the cost of it. Will your insurance cover it? If so, how much of the cost will be covered? I also saw in the video that the arm was quite loud, but I think they'll be able to work out the noise level once the finished product comes out. Ya feel me?

anderson a-2 said...

There is no such think as a lifelike prosthetic arm(s) once those expensive things are attached to your arm (do they require surgery or something) you are no longer normal b/c yu will be able to do things that normal humans cannot such as (possibly) lifting very heavy things. and could you imagine getting into a fight with a person that had mechanical arms.... that would be suicide depending on the person yu fighting.

Miller, J - 2 said...

I really like the Luke arm, i think it is a big break through in our arm prosthetics. if they can down size it to a regular arm and reduce the noice, they can have something major. especialy for people who have both arms missing. they can still control it with there muscles. AWESOME. now only if they can get it exactly like the ones off of StarWars.

brooks-2 said...

Ok the luke arm is realy cool, and it will help meany people but its still has a little way to go.

For those who missed our first story on Deka’s Luke Arm, I should explain that it is controlled by pads under the feet and attached to shoulders muscles.

The Luke Arm might help people, but the possibility of it being successful anytime soon is slim.

duguay, n-4 said...

I think this arm is a great advance in medical technology because it will allow people with prosthetic arms to function just as people with normal arms would.

diverdi, d - 4 said...

ha thats awesome it would be so messed up if it malfunctioned and started beating the crap out of people haha i need one now just for that ha

young, j - 4 said...

Looking at this, and all the other robotic technology that's out there, I honestly don't think it will be long before we start creating fully-functioning (by themselves) robots.

On the other hand (no pun intended),I can see how this could be useful to people that have lost an arm or two, or to people that just want to see how much they can get done with four arms :D.

hill, s - 4 said...

i think that prosthetic arm is awesome.its like a third arm but its made from technology and you can do alot wit it. it will also be helpful to tha one that dosen't have an arm.

Haskins,T-4 said...

I see this arm being able to be used in alot of ways and alot of jobs will be covered if someone loses an limb there can be an replaceable arm or if there is an person with a birth defect this will give them the abilty to expirence and real simulation of have arms that will be a great thing to see

and i also see a defect if it does work with your toes how would a person with no feet use it

tedder, d - 4 said...

i think its awsome that you can have a robotic arm and later on in the future you can replace any limb with that tech.

Well... they cant feel the arm... but it'd sure be nifty to have this arm, instead of no arms just think, if you do have arms and your rich, then you can have like, freakin 10 dang arms... all over your body, doin stuff... fast...
-(talk about multi tasking)-
:D
only a couple moar years till the end of the human race, from the deadly robo dogg thats ganna catch a glitch and destroy us all...

The prosthetic arm thingy looks all high tech and everything but thats going make th price tag go thru the roof... Not all ambutees will be able to purhcase one becuase of financial problems or low-income

I hope that every vetern or current active soldier gets this prosthtic arm because they give up their arm for us, so at least we can do is give them a working arm not the plastic ones we give them now a days

This arm would be perfect if th noise level wasnt so high like it is. I know its still a prototype and i hope when the real 1 does come out its not as loud as this 1

I think the new prosthetic arm is great. It can help so many people. Most people that have lost their arms, should have something this great. It greats that they would be able to move and pick up objects. I remember seeing one lady at this party with this prosthetic arm that look like it came straight from a mannequin and it looked weird. This new arm looks much more advanced and if I was in a situation where I didn't have an arm, I would definitely buy one.

madkins, b - 4 said...

First of all I think the prosthetic arm is a great idea.

Nobody really realizes how many people have actually lost limbs due to accidents caused by war, diseases, and everyday tragedies( if i spelled that rong it's Karen and Yuris' fault) it would be great for these people to regain the skill to move an arm or pick up everyday items.

I understand that it's expensive but think about how happy these people would be. My only worry is the malfunctions with these things. What if it turns out that it could seriously hurt or electrocute somebody?

wilson, k - 4 said...

I think the prosthetic arm is a great invention, but I worry that people will not be able to afford it, especially in poor countries.

gutierrez, n - 4 said...

i think that prosthetic arm is awesome because this is one of the biggest advancement in medical technology.its going to be alot of help to the people that needs it, and the people that wants some extra arms..

emborgo, t - 4 said...

Having a robotic arm seems to be pretty helpful for those who miss their arms, but its still kind of creepy at the same time. What if everyone in the world becomes part robot later on!? Then again, these prosthetic arms are expensive. A whooping $100,000 for one arm! Thats about the same price as average houses in USA. I think it's not worth, considering how hard it's been for most people these days. I would rather learn how to use my legs like those guys that can play a guitar with their toes!

rivera, m - 4 said...

I think that hand would be really useful. But how is it attached to you?? The only thing is does it make a loud noise when moving it?? But it still looks awesome

page, c - 4 said...

The prosthetic arm is really creative one of the best advancements in medical technology. I think that if you didn't have an arm this is considerate . Dean Kamen is very intellegent if you ask me. But I wander how much it cost to own one of them bad boys probably a fortune.. Lol

carrillo, c - 4 said...

The Luke arm is helpful to a lot of people who dont have an arm because with that it allows them to do amazing stuff that they couldn't do before.

bryan, j - 4 said...

its all nice and helpful until the machines take over. where is John Connor?!

ewing, r - 5 said...

i "feel" rudy's comment about noise and insurance coverage. another thing that would have to be thought of is how would it react if it rained? would it malfunction, leaving you with either a "broken" fake arm, or would you have to buy a new one? it seems like a good idea, however, some other things need to be taken into account as well.

adams, i - 5 said...

i think the prothetic arm is a very nice invention. it can help millions of people who suffer from the lost of a arm.... and maby he can make a prosthatic leg too!!! before we know it we are gonna be half human and half machine!!

This arm prosthetic is a good idea. i'm really impresed who the technology from today is going. I'm really cant believe that we're getting better with todays tech. the arm prosthetic is a good tool for those people who needs one! they can be like they have both hands. People wont feel like unnormal besides other people. People should be doing this every month try to find other prosthetic for any kind of the body.

Myers, K-5 said...

First off, the prosthetic arm is an amazing idea.

It's hard to beleive that prosthetic arms are still in the prehostoric age while other technologies advance. I mean, heelllooo, 21st Century here!

And just think, if they can perfect this new arm, then I'm sure they can start making prosthetic everything! Fingers, toes, hands, feet, and other useful limbs you might lose. Lol.

The only concerns I have with this arm are, how does the whole swimming thing work? Are they going to make it waterproof, or what? What happens if you spill a drink on it? Are thousands of bolts going to shoot through you? That would be a serious drag. And what about if it overheats and breaks down or something? It is mechanical after all.

Other then these, I think the new prosthetic limb is a good idea and could really help and improve the lives of so many people without there arms. (:

johnson, d - 5 said...

i think what Dean Kamen is doing is very nice, and its probably been a long time coming for some people who really need this. i can see this prosthetic arm going really far in the future depending on the cost of it which is probably really high!

I can see this technology advancing to where soldiers with missing limbs can be mechanically augmented with super strength prosthetics. And legless soldiers with prosthetic legs increasing their agility and speed. Also, linking the arm to tendons, bone and etc. so you can think about moving your arm and it moves, making the prosthesis more like an actual limb, and allowing quicker responses.

vineyard, w - 5 said...

If these advancements in prosthetic technology continues, there could be extremely capable and lifelike prostheses for arms, legs, and even other body parts (like eyes and organs, but that would definitely take more time) available to the public in a relatively short span of time. When all those robotic parts are developed, some genius could take some limbs, connect them together, set them to a complex AI program, and have a fairly convincing humanoid robot at their disposal.

curry, b - 5 said...

Well i think that it was incredible enough for people to be able of have a protetic leg with all of the medical advances that it is supplied with but now we have both an arm and a leg that both have outstanding medical/technilogical capabilities.
As it was hinted in the passage, the protetic arm is kind of late in arrival but i believe it was for the best because now-a-days we have such a broad range to choose from and I think that that aided in the creation of this technology.
I believe that things like this are shaping the future of tomorrow. People say that we are technilogically behind what they thought that we were going to be at by now and I think that if we keep making these kind of advancements in the medical and technilogical fields then we will easily reach or even exceed the potential (expectation) that was previously placed on us.

ewing, r - 5 said...

another question that i am left with, is although people think of "super human strength", is technology good enough to allow you to even do sports?

mejia, c - 5 said...

A prosthetic arm? really? Well, it looks pretty awesome. But it sounds pretty noisy. And it looks like its pretty darn heavy. It would actually help people that have lost there arms. This looks like great technology but it's pretty darn expensive just for one arm.

hernandez, a - 5 said...

The idea of a prosthetic arm is fansinating imaging all those people who have lost an arm and now thanks to Dean Kamen can have a new arm the only problem with this is that it will turn out to be a little too expensive for an average armless person to buy besides that minor detail prosthetic arms can be the start of 'human robots' if there can be such things like that dude will smith plays in "I ROBOT"

Silva-A-5th said...

The prosthetic arm is looks cool,I think it is a big advancement in medical technology. The price is high so I don't see it going any place for awhile.

Okay me i think the prosthetic arm is freaking AWESOME if i didnt have arm i would pay the big bucks to get it. I can see this technology going some where hopefully far enough lol but anywho i believe it will be a great change and i think it would really good for the soldiers that lose their arms in the war i think this would be something they would love to have i know i would.........
but hey mrs. l theres my BLOG lol
PEACE OUT HOME SKILLET

i think the arm i a great idea becuz for ppl that lost there arm in war or car acc. or other stuff that could have lost there arm.

murphey, l - 7 said...

The prosthetic arm is a major step in medical technology. In the future i see it becoming more advanced and more available to the people. This is only one step so the benefits are endless. ONe is the benefit for the disabled to actually have an arm. Lets just hope it doesnt malfunction.

brummett, a - 7 said...

i agree it would probably be hard to use the fake arm, not just becuase it's not your original arm, but also it might have malfunctions and your nerves that connect to your brain will not be connected to the arm, so you probably won't be able to tell it what to do.

johnson, dasmine - 7 said...

Well i think it's going to go far. i like the prosthetic arm. It is good for disabled people. I would like to see it on people. It kind of makes me think of the lady i seen in Wal-Mart this moring that was missing a arm and she was struggling. Its not fun to see people struggle. I just hope the prosethetic arm help a lot of people.

ponce, j - 7 said...

The prosthetic arm seems like an awesome idea. It would be big help for the war veterans and for people that have lost limbs in accidents, but i think it would probobly be very very VERY expensive, so in the end the rich people always get the good things.

I think the prosthetic arm is AWESOME!!!! especially for the people who lost arms during a war or an accident.

ramirez, j - 7 said...

what i think about the prosthetic arm is that its a great invention becuase the people who have lost a arm and they could get a arm back.....and the way we wel benefit from it in the future they could make legs and other body parts

the prosthetic arm looks cool.I think that it will help a lot of people who are missing an arm(s)out, but at the same time it looks pretty heavy.. and i think they need to make like a kid size one. i mean there are little kids out there that dont have an arm(s). so hopefully they make it cause like imaging if your a 9 year kid with out an arm? you would want one wouldnt you? im just saying

redfield, c - 7 said...

I can't imagine what it would be like not having an arm or not being able to just grab something. Its a great advancement in technology, and could lead us so many more places, but hopefully they cover up the sound this machine makes because it is way to loud, but it is still awesome, and will be so helpful to all the people who dont have arms. So thanks Dean Kamen for everything you have done and the lives you will change because of this arm

nickson, n - 7 said...

i think the robotic arm will be a big help to all those who use it. its good to see someone backing such a good cause and making life easier for those who lost their arms.i wanna know how it actually works with the body or whatever.this was a very creative piece of work

morgan, d - 7 said...

Seeing as so many people are losing limbs in warfare, the Luke Arm seems like a great idea. It's just lame that it costs like a hundred thousand dollars...

If its that expensive, then veterans should at least have the cost covered by the military. I'd rather them be spending thier money on prosthetics for veterans than weapons.

wiggins, m - 7 said...

I think that the Luke arm is very interesting but very loud. If they were not so expensive then alot of people might get one. People that dont have arms can benefit from this by having an arm again.

williams, j - 8 said...

i think the robotic arm is cool but i hope when it comess out it isnt that loud because i can see it get real annoying fast if its that loud

carter, j - 8 said...

I can see this technology going very far. I also think that humans will greatly benefit from this technological advancement as limbless humans are becoming more of a commonality.

linyard, t - 8 said...

Okay so im kinda thinking about like losing my arm just so i can have one of those cool looking arms. i hope that video was just a prototype and the actual ones arent as loud. it gives the people who lost their arm another chance. or however many chances they can afford.

scoggins, l - 8 said...

the prices for those arms will probably be huge, so they won't be available for many. It's a great idea, however, and in a few years, it could be more reasonable to get one

hernandez, b - 8 said...

I'm not going to lie. I'm so pumped about the opportunity to become like the legendary jedi revivalist. If I had to sever my own arm to become as great as the mighty Skywalker, I would do it instantly. "And he came from the blackness of space bearing a blade to cut the darkness. The dark lord rose against him, but Skywalker bested his father, bringing him back to the path of light in his dying moments. So is the history of the Great One. Skywalker walk by you, and may the Force be with you." All jokingness aside, this is a monumental research path that could give so many people a chance to return to a normal life.

carter, j - 8 said...

The only thing that they really need to fix is all of the noise that it makes. It is very distracting.

rodriguez, s - 8 said...

deckard, j - 8 said...

murillo, j - 8 said...

it's interesting how a robotic arm can replace a human arm. The only thing i want to know is if it will be heavy? Will it be avaible all around the world? Will there be robotic legs for people that are in wheelchairs? Time will tell us.

linyard, t - 8 said...

if i had the money i would totally buy one just to have one and i have both my arms.

stinson, m - 8 said...

i htink i see this technology moving forward to not just limbs but artificial organs (like the repo men) like lungs ans stuff because once you break a boundary like this it opens up more doors to newer technology and that will benefit the countrry in the long run.

matthews, j - 8 said...

Super, Super, Super awesome!! Really, prostetics look really creepy looking, but maybe when the skin is one it this one will look life like, and it even works like a normal hand. It's noisy, but hey! It gets the job done! I'm glad that they will be sending them to the veterans because of course they need them most since most of them had the arms or legs blown off during the war. Hopefully, it will also be affordable to all others that will need this.

shankle, m - 8 said...

i think the arm can go a very long way as far as helping people with one or no arms.i say there is no other technology like this in the country.and if i had no arms i could less abount the noise

cox, t - 8 said...

i think this arm is just the start of this technology ... think about cell phones. 20 years ago they were huge and only the rich had them. Now they are much smaller and almost everyone has one ... within the next 20 years these arms will be much more effective and they will be able to create other parts like legs ... also, if the technology increases as fast as most tech. does, it wont be long before the government can make robots that look like humans. I know this sounds like something off a scifi movie but its true. Human soldiers may be a thing in the past

Unknown said...

Many people can benefit from the technology of a prosthetic arm, especially people who need it. The cool thing about that and the technology today is that it's gradually advancing, so before you know it, instead of it making lots of noise and doing strange things, then sooner or later, it will look like a new arm. Now one thing I wonder is, what if there is a child who is born without an arm, would they begin using one as a young child? Or would they just kinda chill without the arm and then eventually just get the arm? I hope it could possibly be covered in some type of insurance if someone can't afford it and it ends up being super expensive.

pearson, m-8 said...

I think the arm is absolutly AMAZING!!! The down side is the noise, but if today's scientists can make a prosthetic arm they can DEFINATLY fix some robot sound effects. I mean it's WD40 yall, how hard can it be?

wallis, z - 8 said...

The arm is great for those who lack one, but at the same time, it is quite noisy, and looks like it would be somewhat heavy and unbalanced for the person's body. In my opinion, we could have made something far better, but this guy thinks he is a beast for making it, so I guess he can have a little bit of credit.

vasquez, j - 8 said...

Personally where i see this technology going is well... you know when you watch those corny movies where everyones a robot or part robot but you know that its fake because you see the director pass by in the background. if were makeing people who cant feel feel thing then we will all become obsolete one day as humans. Put bluntly.
