Blog 4 - 9/27/10

Hola Peeps! Thanks for logging in.

So sticking with the subject of medical technology, I thought I would get a little personal this week. This past year was a tough one in the Lanham household, as we were visited by the big C word. Cancer. Scary just to look at isn't it? Kinda makes my skin crawl just seeing it sitting there.

Anyway, Mr. L (who I lovingly refer to as Better Half) was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. On the very first day of summer vacation he had a radical robotic prostatectomy. That's right, ROBOTIC. Oh the technology implications . . . His surgeon actually sat ACROSS THE ROOM as he operated on Mr. L! Just like a video game. He has these goggles he looks into and he moves his thumbs and across the room the robotic arms that were INSIDE MY HUSBAND proceeded to do all the things that surgeons used to do the old way. Except when he was done, Mr. L only had 5 small incisions instead of one great big huge one. MUCH faster recovery time.

So go take a look at the pictures of the robot. Also, take a look at the article about Catherine Mohr (girl power!), who is one of the designers of the Da Vinci system.

Please read Tuesday. Please blog Thursday. You may give an opinion about the use of the robot. You may reference another article about the robot (please leave me a link). You may give me an opinion about Catherine Mohr.

Please remember: you must advance the discussion in some manner to get credit. "That's cool" or "I like that" is not advancing the discussion. Not now, not in May at the end of the year. You must TELL ME WHY!

You may also reply to someone else's post.

Thats insane stuff that is pretty awesome!!! If anyone is skillful enough to move a little robot hand in a body, then i will be glad to have a surgeon poke around in my body to fix what is needed.

The leaps in technology that have been occurring in the 21st century are amazing. If scientists can keep up the pace, who knows what sort of devices will be concieved.

Technology is going WILD! It is SOOO awesome that whenever I get surgery I'm putting my life in the hands of controlled robots! Haha. But it's VERY neat that there are fewer incisions and in the future you will heal faster. Because a less painful surgery sounds amazing to me. I hate surgery. And I really feel inspired that a woman created robotic surgery. That's incredib;e in my book.

fuentes, m - 1 said...

i think that the robot thing is kinda cool. i mean its better for someone on a robot machine to go inside you than for some nasty hands. i think that the robot is really precise (seeing from the videos). i think a suegery with one of the robots and a well skilled doctor can fix a life threatning problem (like mr. L).

baeza, n - 1 said...

i think its pretty cool how they be doing the surgery wit the robots.... yeah TECHNOLOGY would be the bestest....
would it work for every type of surgery?? yeah right?

juarez, a - 1 said...

Technology is officially COOL! I like how the doctor is in the other room basically playing a video game on your body, altough it's kinda scary, but the advancement of all this technology is going to help society in so many ways. I wonder what new inventions are going to be ready to use when im like 50 years old

patton, e - 1 said...

Having fewer incisions is aswesome and the leap that medical technology has made is impressive. but i dont think i would feel comfortable having a doctor controled robot operating on me.

yancey-z-1 said...

it is amazing what we can do so much, and the things your body can take thank about it some one cuting your heart open and it still working after that is unbelieve able i thank the robot is great and cant wait to see what is next

stegall, j - 1 said...

Technoloy is taken over it is so great how they can make a little robot that can go inside of you and do everything you would do by hand its just a faster way to cure people and it keeps you in one piece.

fuentes, e - 1 said...

Wow if all of this is being made when i'm barely 17 imagine what new technology will be in the future!! It seems like a movie...I mean saying that a robot is actually going to perform surgery on me???...Kind of creepy.

wallace, o-1 said...

I think this machine is a BIG leap for medical technology. This machine will help surgery go more smoothly with precision.

tedder, d - 4 said...

i dont know if i would feel safe if robotic arms operated on me

bryan, j - 4 said...

what if to computer messes up and just stars cutting everything! or somebody takes control of it and does bad stuff

Reyes, A-4 said...

The idea of using robots to perform surgery is strange and slightly frightening. What if something goes wrong and you lose an eye, or a finger? What if it begins to build lasers and kills everyone?.....eh, let the people of the future deal with it.

vargas, k - 4 said...

I think that technology is getting ridiculously very advanced. Its weird that a machine can map out your insides and stuff and then do the surgery. But to be perfectly honest, i wouldn't trust a machine to cut me up and mess with my guts. The machine could somehow mess up and do something wrong and i could die. Altough i'm impressed with the machine, I rather stick to regular surgery

emborgo, t - 4 said...

This is really helpful. Getting surgery will now be safer and people will be able to recover faster. Only negative thing from this would be if technology on this advances, then robots will start doing the surgery itself without the help of real humans. Then surgeons would lose their jobs.

diverdi, d - 4 said...

how much does one cost i want one as a pet to have and play games with imagine playing thumbwar with that thing for 17 hours straight it would be awesome haha or how fast you could go through your daily activities with this thing on ur side

madkins, b - 4 said...

Thats pretty cool to be able to invent something like that, It seems as though people will be in a lot less pain because the don't make so many precisions on the body
People may actually want to go into surgery and watch how it is done. I know I would. This is so awsome how far techonology has come!

Yea i thinnk is pretty sweet to i wish i had one so much i could do i could watch tv and play computer games from a distance lol awsome

wilson, k - 4 said...

I think it is pretty neat that they can use a robot to do the surgery, but I also think it is a little strange, and I do not know if I want to trust a machine. My aide thinks: What if there is a power surge or some sort of electrical occurence, or some sort of malfunction? Of course, if you can trust a human, you might as well trust a machine.......

I think thats pretty cool. technology has come a longgg way. My auntie ( Britney Hightower ) died of cancer ;( at the paste its going who knows what will be invented in the future.. &nd girl power to Catherine Mohr!!! :)

Omg! i cant believe that this technology is going far. Its is very awesome how todays technology is going. In one day not so far we will not need people to help us, it will be robots or someone else.

That is amazing! I would love to watch a doctor oppereate on someone with a robot! I think it speeds up they surgery and makes things go smoother. It shows that technology has deffenitly advanced!!

Thats a pretty tight hunk of mettal. Maybe in the future it can get even more advanced and make less incisions and maybe even un-manned surgery robot.

this is reallyy cool, this technology stuff is so tight! i dont know if i woudd feel comfortable with a robot thingy working on me but of i had to do it i would most likely do it.

hernandez, a - 5 said...

omg look at all the technology, a robot that does surgery while the surgeon sits at the back looking like he is playing some sort of video game is wicked. having a robot do the surgery instead of a human takes away the danger of the doctor poking or cutting something that he is not suppose to. like i said pretty soon, if technology keeps advancing like it is now, we will find ourselve in a world similar to that of "I Robot"

ewing, r - 5 said...

I think that thiis technology is very impressive, and I would like to see just HOW FAR all of this goes!

curry, b - 5 said...

It is interesting how much technology has advanced. Like everyone else, I think it is cool that robotic surgeries are becoming more common. Years from now they will make a robot that can think for itself and do the surgery itself. One main point to remember though is that even though the "machine" is doing all manual surgery there is still a skilled physician controlling all aspects of the operation. I see technology like this going so far beyond what anyone expects. Soon all we will have to do is put the person on the operation table and just let the robot do the rest. Recovery time will be so quick and easy then people will be able to get back to their daily routine sooner.

mejia, c - 5 said...

This is some pretty awesome stuff! Technology is going crazy! Having surgery by a robot seems pretty awesome. But what IF something goes wrong with the machine? D: Yeah..pretty terrifying.

vineyard, w - 5 said...

The da Vinci system is just incredible. Besides providing state-of-the-art cancer treatment to patients, there could very well be a rise in video gamers-turned-robotic surgeons in the future due to the video game-like setup of the machine. That could benefit the nation largely, provided they were well-trained and certified and all.

albro, d - 7 said...

That is so koolie o tha way u can set across tha room from someone and operate on them. I bet u some of the doctors sit there and play HALO while they're operating on you. You might call it wrong but I call it multi. tasking.

delagarza, g - 7 said...

Thats cool. but i personaly would be kinds freaked about a machine doing surgery inside me.

ponce, j - 7 said...

This sound cool, a doctor. Using a machine to do the surgery while the dotor looks at a moniter and controls the machine like if it was a video game. I thinkmaybe in a few years we might have robots do all the critical surgery stuff like heart surgery, but i think that will lead to computers taking over the world and making us slaves!!!!....but thats just my opinion

reyna, j - 7 said...

I think it would be awesome to have the robot arms performing surgery i would feel a lot more safer to have a steady robot than a shaky human arm.

I think it is pretty awesome im a weird chick so when i get married i would like to use that on my husband to get him to do things i want him to do lol i know im weird lol hahaha so what???? I love how the people in this world are taking technology to like the fullest i wish i was that creative and freaking smart!!!!!

brummett, a - 7 said...

About the machine that does surgery on you, what if it electrocutes you for some malfunction it has, or dies and gets part of it stuck inside you, i think that's a little too wierd, and plus i wouldn't go that far with this technology, it'll hurt us in the end, because with every new invention, there are people who want to use for harm and to kill people.

lanham2010-eramirez said...

I think is pretty cool that technology is advancing. is cool how they can operate if as it was like a video game.

First of all im not so thrilled about the thought of a machine cutting me, because as we know almost all technological machines malfunction at some point. I do believe that this is a huge step in technology. But personally i rather not have it operated on me.

johnson, dasmine - 7 said...

this stuff is very interesting. technology is going very far i see.it's good that they are coming up with stuff to help people out. i love the way technology is going now a days because this little robot thing is very cool. i would like to see how it works and play with it a bit. WELL I POSTED AND IM GONE MRS.L !

brasher, k - 7 said...

i think it is something good becuz if the surgen had to sneeze then he could just pull his arms out and sneeze, and go right back to working. but if he is right there in u and he sneezed then he would have to clean his arms and change his cloths a such.

ramirez, j - 7 said...

it is amazing what they can do with technology. poeple have got more advanced in so many years from using a saw to cut someone open to using a robot, who knows what else thier going to make in the future.

redfield, c - 7 said...

Technology has come so far! i mean 10 years ago who would have thought we could be doing surgery, that is just as easy as playing a video game! and it uses less incisions and heals faster than regular surgey.

morgan, d - 7 said...

I think the biggest problem with machines operating on humans is that machines don't always work properly, and that's a pretty major problem when your life could be at stake. Also, this might affect the medical careers pretty badly, seeing as there would be less need for surgeons. Overall, I think that while it is more effective, the risk and consequences would be too much.

Medical technology is becoming so advanced these days especially with the past inventions we have talked aobut in the last few weeks. This machine is very impressive but couldn't anything go wrong at any time? I think it is wonderful that it is helping many people but if something wrong were to happen now that's the real problem.

wiggins, m - 7 said...

I think it is very neat how they have made robots to perform surgeries but i would not want one to work on me. I would rather have a skilled surgeon. Robots could malfunction and hurt or even kill you.

woah!!!!how awesome is that. technolgy just got more amazing and it will keep going.i just hope it doesnt get to the point where we dont do anywork and get all big like in the movie wall-e (lol)

nickson, n - 7 said...

i think the technology advances in the medical field are flat out wicked.the da vinci is awesome because it makes the recovery time faster. i like the way it looks too. pretty soon we will have doctors that can perform surgery with their minds or something.

That is WAY cool! That's neat that they got to do that to your husband and you see it and everything. The only thing I would worry about is if the robot malfunctions or what if someone's hands are on it and they happen to sneeze and hit the remote control or something and then it will poke the person in the wrong organ and then internal bleeding occurs, now how scary is that? It's not TOO big of a deal. OR what if the place where the opperation is occuring has a power outage with no generator?

stinson, m - 8 said...

I would be kinda scareded of havin a robot work on me.... I mean like it would be cool that its faster and more ifecient but the thought of it scares the mess out of me.

hernandez, b - 8 said...

The fact that we are perfecting surgery even in the post-surgery recovery aspect is phenomenal! Robots, in my opinon, are the most epic things in existence. Using them to operate on humans is just brilliant. I really hope that it does advance to a point where surgery can be done all the way around the world, from a hospital here in Nacogdoches. As long as the connection is strong. I don't want Dr. Malahaliawawa losing connection to the robot when my heart juices are free flowing.

williams, j - 8 said...

i think its cool just dont let me get near it or i might play with it too much and brake it

linyard, t - 8 said...

Pretty soon the doctor isnt even going to have to come to the hospital to operate on his patients. people could operate across the world with less recovery time and no big nasty scars. this technology benefits people that cannot handle a big open surgery but can handle a small surgery. BEAST MODE!

matthews, j - 8 said...

First of all, I hope the scare of cancer could just poof away for your family. I know it must be so stressful... D:

Anyway... To me it'd be really creepy having a robot operate on me. Suure... it's all high-tech and smart and stuff, but it'd freak me out. One, it takes too long, and two what if it messed up even if it takes an hour just to get it right!? Pfft, too much for me.

Hilarious how Mr. L thought of it as a videogame though. XD

deckard, j - 8 said...

The Da Vinci system looks and sounds okay but i get a little shaky just thinking about it.

scoggins, l - 8 said...

I don't know how I would feel having a machine operate on me, but I'm sure it's better than having a person do it. A machine can at least be trusted to make precise movements that may be more difficult for a person.

pearson, m-8 said...

This is pretty awsome. I think it has alot more possible benifits then just a shorter recovery time tho. These things could bring specialists from around the world to patients who need them. Like a Japanese specialist who speeks NO english but is the best option for a surgery for someone in america could conect with a surgery robot in america and preform the surgery from MILLIONS of miles away.

vasquez, j - 8 said...

Well since I'm the type of person that'll work till id rop dead I consider the pros and cons of this robot. For me I think its lazynees to make a robot do the work you spent years of colledge education to train for. But on the other hand there haf been instances where doctors couldnt perform the sergery because gettin gthat close to the patient can kill them. So like I said in the last article since people are like monkeys and like shiney new stuff then we will shurly and almost confidently will become insolete and servents of the robot in the future....and since america isnt willing enough to look past outward apperances (ex. obama and bush they elected him twice?!yes twice.)they will allow it to happen without protest.

cox, t - 8 said...

I have mixed feelings about this ... i think its really cool how the recovery time is faster and the machine maybe "more acurate" but its a machine ... machines break ... im assuming its got some sort of computer inside it and computers get virus's ... and whats the doctor gonna do if the power goes out? a generator can only run for so long ...

shankle, m - 8 said...

I think it's pretty cool stuff. but honestly i would be scared to use it because i might end up cuting the person into pieces.overall its a big advancment in technology and by a woman thats nice.

santoyo, l - 1 said...

I think The da Vinci is a pretty neat robot because i like how it can do thinks a sergeon can't do. An example would be the that the da Vinci can spot those glowing things (I think it was the cancer)to make really accurate cuts. Even though the da Vinci can do all those awesome things i saw in the video, i still wouldn't trust it inside my body because machines usually crash and fail.

Tristan i don't think surgeons would trust a robot to do things by itself because as i said before machines usually crash and fail.

I'd actually want to try it but i'm not into te videogame stuff. So i don't know though i like the fact that you can just laid back and act like your playing a game although u have to think of the consequences that come with it.It's great what new inventions the 21st century has come up with.

Okay, if my surgeon was sitting across the room and operating on me with a robot, I would definetely make sure they had me knocked out! That's just crazy... and amazing at the same time. If we're able to operate robotically in this day in age, I can only imagine what they'll develop in the next ten years.

wallis, z - 8 said...

The spider pill has to be the most awesomest invention ever. The only problem is you might feel it crawling inside you, or what if it malfunctions? Things to consider when eating a robot.

murillo, j - 8 said...

Surgeries involving robots is extremely expensive but its really worth it and its interesting how doctors can now have time operating on people and still have time to do other mindless stuff. Technology can really make your life easier

smith, n - 8 said...

As long as the robot is proven to make no mistakes its great ,but if it does mess up i want a human doctor less than one second away to keep me alive.

niu, y - 1 said...

I'm just thinking about one thing...they try hard to make the cut smaller, but what if the stupid doctor left something in my stomach and he just couldn't get it out with his tiny metal tool? It means I will be cut again to get it out!!!

I read an article before. it says that the most difficult part for a robot is the central processor--the "brain",then the hands. People's hands are amazing, I'm sure they make less mistake, but it's also attractive to have a operation with less and smaller scars.....I'm just going to keep healthy, hope I don't need to have a operation!

Although the idea is really cool, and could probably be a lot more accurate than than a human, it's kinda scary when you think about it.
What if the robot malfunctioned? What if it made one small little mistake and screwed the entire surgery up? Well i guess it wouldnt be any different than the doctor himself messing up, right? Though they could probably sue the company who made the robots...

This is my make-up blog thingy Mrs. L

I feel that this is a huge leap into technology helping surgeons on perfecting their skills and its so much better for the patient cause their will be less incisions and less recovery time probably. Its amazing that technology is able to pretty much take over surgery now a days.
