Hola Peeps!
Any talk about concept cars would not be complete without touching on personal transportation.
I believe in the future we will be moving towards more personal methods of transportation, much like in Japan. So here are some personal transportation concepts. Just like last week, choose one and tell me why it would be your pick.
All stories / picks originally published in GizMag, which (even though it's blocked here at school) is one of the best places to look at new tech.
1. YikeBike The Yikebike is a miniature, electric penny farthing made of carbon fiber and now it's on sale, it is quickly gathering a cult early-adopter following thanks to its weight of 10.8 kilograms, that it folds so small it can fit in a backpack, and that it will run at 25km/h (15 mph). Until now, it has ticked all the boxes except one – its limited range of just 10 kilometers. Now it has released an extender battery pack so you can add additional 10 kilometer increments to the range of your YikeBike. Each battery costs US$195 and weighs 1.95kg and there's a special backpack to carry multiple batteries so it becomes a very practical solution that offers the Yikebike unsurpassed bang-per-kilogram and versatility as a commuting appliance. Though it's hard to equate the US$3600 price tag with primary transport, the addition of a Yikebike to any automobile storage compartment significantly extends the capabilities of both vehicles. The facility to carry secondary transportation inside cars has been explored many times in recent years by Honda and General Motors in particular … and it makes a lot of sense. Gizmag's editor Noel McKeegan and myself both rode the YikeBike in Koln last September and were both very impressed. Normally, it takes 10 minutes or so to get acquainted with the handlebars which sit behind your hips. Noel is a keen mountain bike rider and dirt bike enthusiast and he simply got on the Yikebike and rode away, even though most folks have a few false starts. I fared slightly less well, but had it all happening within a few minutes - if you can ride a bicycle, you need to rewire the brain slightly, but it's going to be a simple job accomplished within ten minutes. Once mastered, the Yikebike offers remarkably quick transport for something that is so small – only Honda's still-unreleased U-3X (right) and Toyota's also-experimental Winglet (left) offer comparable weight-performance figures and it will be interesting to see how long these devices take to reach market and at what price point they greet the public. The Yikebike is in many ways a revolutionary device, as it is the first of a new class of vehicle which we're almost certain to see proliferate as congestion and travel times force us all to consider transportation options. It has won or been a finalist in just about every major design award on the planet for which it is eligible, including making it onto the cover of Time's Invention of the Year issue in 2009 and now a Guinness Book of World records citation as the most compact electric bike in the world. Now it's on sale, it will be interesting to watch marketplace acceptance. The electric bicycle is closer on the consumer devices family tree to a computer than it is to a motorcycle, and just as laptops have a limit to their battery capacity, small transportation devices will also have a form factor that limits battery size. While it is by no means an elegant solution, it is one to which we are accustomed thanks to laptops and cameras, and once exploited, enables much greater runtime. The Yikebike sells for US $3,595, GBP2,422, EUR2,872 and AUD $3,909. If your commuting regime involves train or road and a spot of walking, the Yikebike could be the answer.
2. The Voltitude: Like a Swiss Army Knife You Can Ride Last January, we said that the Robrady-designed db0 was one of the best folding electric bikes we'd seen. The Swiss entry into the market has turned its back on this traditional bicycle-with-motor design in favor of a folding pedal-electric assist scooter. Users are said to be able to fold or unfold the Voltitude bike in about one second, and with one hand, thanks to its unique EasyFold system. Swiss and EU legislation limits the electric assist to 15.5 mph (25 kph), although some frantic footwork could see it achieve faster speeds if required, and the onboard battery is good for between 12 and 25 miles (20 to 40 km) between charges.
3. Solowheel The fat wheeled eniCycle, the stylish and graceful U3 from Honda or the slightly scary prospect of the UnoMoto have all shared more in common than being one-wheeled, self-balancing personal transport solutions. They've all had somewhere for the user to sit. Inventist's Solowheel is a little different – you ride this electric unicycle standing upright, like a Segway or skateboard. It has a useful carry handle and fold-away foot platforms, is gyro-stabilized and the Li-ion batteries offer a range of about 12 miles between charges. For those who work in the city but don't actually live there, leaving the car at home and getting to the office by train, tram or bus is becoming a more attractive prospect. For those who don't relish the sometimes long walk from the station or terminus to the workplace, there are now numerous electric personal, short haul transport solutions – from the Segway to the YikeBike or even the FlyRad – to take some of the strain away. Weighing 25 pounds (11 kg), sporting folding leg platforms on each side and a carry handle on top, the 17 x 19 x 5-inch (43 x 48 x 13 cm) Solowheel from Inventist is sure to turn some heads as you trundle along at up to 12mph. The durable external housing hides a Li-ion battery that's said to be good for two hours of use between charges and a 1000-Watt electric motor, and a self-balancing gyro system. Its battery is reported to take 45 minutes to charge but a regenerative system returns energy to the battery when the rider slows down or the unit goes downhill, which could help extend the range. The electric unicycle's creators say that it's easy to use and quick to learn, the feet are quite close to the ground and the legs rest against each side of the housing which help with balance and steering. With both feet on the vehicle, you just lean forward to start going. When you want to slow down or stop, you lean back. You use the legs to steer, much as you would on the Magic Wheel.
4. Shadow Ebike Got a problem with the various gear and brake cables winding their way around your bike frame? If you're riding a standard pedal-powered bike, the answer is probably 'no.' But if you're one of the increasing numbers of people getting around town on an electric bike than your answer may be different, with faulty wiring one of the most common sources of failures found in such vehicles. While some hide their electrical wiring away inside the frame, many e-bikes have wires running down the outside. Like so many of today's electrical devices, the new Shadow Ebike does away with this unsightly mess and potential point of weakness using wireless technology. Toronto-based Daymak Inc. has dubbed its Shadow Ebike "the world's first wireless power-assist electric bicycle." Through the integration of ISM 2.4 GHz wireless using frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology to prevent interference, the Shadow has no brake or gear cables, and no visible electric wires running from the motor to the batteries, the controller or throttle. Turning the electric motor on or off, the magnetic regenerative brakes, the throttle and the pedal assist are all controlled wirelessly via the Daymak Drive controller. What wiring and electronics there is, including the motor, lithium polymer battery and wireless Daymak Drive controller, is all packed inside the bike's front wheel, which is accommodated in a custom designed fork and frame. The wheel also includes a USB port, charging port and an LED battery power display. When the brakes are applied from the wireless throttle, the regenerative braking system kicks in to send current back to the batteries and the wheel can also be used as a generator to recharge devices via the USB port. Daymak offers the Shadow Ebike with a 250W or 350W electric motor, and a 36V 10AH lithium-ion battery, which provides an average range of around 20 to 25 km (12 to 15 miles) running on just motor power, or around 35 to 40 km (22 to 25 miles) with pedal-assist. The included battery takes around 4-5 hours to completely recharge and is good for 750 to 800 cycles. While the concept of a wireless bike throws up the possibility of interference from other wireless devices or even someone hacking into the bike's controls and slamming on the brakes to send you flying over the handlebars, Daymak says that each Shadow Ebike wireless component is paired and the odds of being affected by other means is less than one in a billion. Daymak says the use of wireless technology also means the Shadow is setup for future upgrades to interact with smartphones and even PCs – possibly to give it similar remote monitoring capabilities to the PiCycle, an electric bike that could also lay claim to the title of "world's first wireless electric bicycle" with its use of Wi-Fi-based technology. Daymak is currently taking orders of the Shadow Ebike ahead of an April 30, 2011 delivery date. It is priced at US$1,999.

second...
Wouldnt it be easier just to ride a regular bike. But out of them all the YikeBike would probably be the most reasonable. I mean how are you supose to keep your balance when your on the solowheel.
I would not choose the solowheel because I do not have the balance for it.
I'd get the swiss army bike because now i can easily take my bike to school and wherever i want in my backpack. I don't ever need to worry about it being stolen because the bike will be secured inside my bag always on my back. How much is it!?
I think this bikes are for lazy people but since i have to choose one it would be the Shadow Ebike.
I would choose this one because it look like a normal bike but on steroids cuz it has a lot of neat stuff.
I would choose the Shadow EBike because it seems like the most practical way of personal transportation .
i think it would be easier to ride a regular bike, but thats just me! since i have to choose one its the last one ya know that yellow one, because it looks like a normal bike? the only difference is that it costs A LOT of money :(
I'm going to pick the volitude:Like a swiss army knife you can ride. i pick this cause this looks cool and modern, it looks like you can actually ride it. i like it because it folds up in one second and you can do it with one arm. i like that it can go from 12-25 mph also.
Why cant we just walk? or Ride a cheap bike? but if anything i would choose the YikeBike. It seems like if i were in a hurry i could get there while saving the world from polution.
I think the volitude is pretty neat. I think it's safe and it's easy to fold and unfold. At least this is one of the normal looking bikes unlike the solowheel or yike bike.
Shadow Ebike because well wen u are mountain biking some times the bikes wiring gets on your way and u could have an accident...and since on this one you dont really have showable wires well it could be a good idea to choose it, since when you ride it you wnt get stuck or something and u dnt have to worry much about the wires and wont have an accident...
I like the first one, though the seat may be to high that i will easily fall.
It's just cool that i can put it into my backpack.
but, it's too expensive anyway. I guess i'd rather buy a normal bicycle.
I wouldnt want to have any of these fancy bikes.. I think it is still better to use a regular bike and it is not that expensive. And that one with one wheel is not really good choice, because you can fall of really easy. They are really weird bikes.. Im dont like them.
out of all of them i would get that shadow Ebike..its probably easy to ride because its a electric bike u can go up to 15 miles on jus motor power withoput pedaling
I would like to choose YikeBike, compare to Solowheel it seems easier to learn, besides, it's very convenient because of the size and weight (lighter than solowheel but has handles and seats).
by Guo, 1st period
I so completely dig the idea of the solowheel, but here's a little secret you might not know about me . . .
I'm clumsy. REAL clumsy.
I think I would spend more time laying on the ground than I would getting somewhere.
I'd probably go with the YikeBike. I'd die if i tried the solo wheel. Besides, the YikeBike looks pretty cool and you can carry it on your back instead of having to carry it like a suitcase.
i choose "The Voltitude" it sounds shocking for one and plus its the only real motorized bike out of the 4 choosen ones it has 2 tires.... KEWL....
Im gonna go with the YikeBike, its probably the coolest one on there, but the guy riding it looks like a lame. Idk if its because the weird hand placement that's just different from a bike that everyone is used to. However, the YikeBike is very cool and extremely portable and I really like it!
I like the solo wheel because it is solo fairly fast and rather portable.
The Voltitude: Like a Swiss Army Knife You Can Ride. i like this because its foldable for easier transportation. besides, its made by the swiss army thing lol its cool! Im lazy also, and the voltitude is electronic, so it works out. it has a reasonable distance between 12 and 25 miles for each charge. i would buy it.
I like the YikeBike because with the way these gas prices are going, I think that Americans will start to resort more towards biking... Well some of them. Plus, I like how it's portable, and somewhat cool looking!
so im goiong to blog about the yike bike it was my favorite one because it looks fun to ride and you can take it everywhere i think i would definitelely enjoy having one
i choose the solo wheel because its very portable and u can cary or ride and it looks perfectly normal
I chose the YikeBike, because it looks the most realistic and reasonable. It's definitely safer to ride than most of the others.
I would really like the YikeBike. It seems way more stable than the rest of them. You don't need excellent balance for this bike
I would like the Voltitude, Swiss Army Knife Bike. It probably has everything you need like the Swiss Army Knife. It looks like it is the safest thing to ride too.
I would choose the Voltitude Swiss Army Knife Bike thing. It probably is all you need just like the Swiss Army knife, and it looks like it is the safest to ride.
Eh. These are okay. I dont really like bikes that much. I'd rather just walk, but if I had to choose, I would choose the Voltitude, only because it's based off of a swiss army knife.
I personally like the Yikebike because its easy to put it away and take out because if folds up, and when you unfold it, it has a seat and looks way more safer than any of the other bikes/w/e they are.
i would not choose yikeBike because i dont have any balance i would rather choose the Shadow Ebike..
I would ride the voltitude because its like one of those normal scooters but you can sit on it and it has a motor. its cool that you can fold it up and stuff. but it looks like it has a crappy battery.
i dislike the solowheel because i wouldnt be able to keep my balance and there is no point to it. The only people i see riding this are clowns at a circus.
I would choose the Shadow Ebike because, it looks real good. I also like the way the yellow covers the whole rim, this makes it look real nice.
i chose the Shadow Ebike because theres no wrong with the old fashion bike with pedals to get some exersise to
I choose the Solowheel just because if fits anywhere. The bad thing about it is that I dont have balance at all so that would be interesting for others to watch.(:
You know i would have prefered to buy a cheap walmart bike instead of an expensive bike that does the same thing...But since i have to choose i would prefer the Yikebike because it is a real atenttion gether and it looks like fun
i DO NOT like the solowheel one it would be a terrible idea for me considering i trip over my own feet...
:P
I think the YikeBike is cool because its like a miniature motorcycle/mopad to ride around without using cars that are a burden to park. Only problem I see is the safety. What if you bump into something? There won't be a handle or bar to catch you in the front like a motorcycle does. If you hit something, then you'll have to have a pretty strong grip to stay seated on the YikeBike.
I like the solo wheel because it is simple and small
i wouldnt choose the solo wheel because it requires a good balance.. and some people do not have that.
Personally, I wouldn't want any of these. BUT, if I had to choose one, I would pick the Shadow Ebike because it looks the LEAST awkward of all of the choices, and I wouldn't have to learn about riding any other new, inefficiant, expensive method of transportation.
im going to go with the yikebike. it seems the most realistic thats no just a bike. the swiss bike looks like it was made just for "lol"s. the solowheel is like a unicycle. how many people you see ruiding unicycles... like 1/100 people, know why? because the other 99 people would fall flat on their face. and that lastt thing...its just a bike. its hardly portable. its just as useful as a normal bike.
it seems kind of hard to balance on the solowheel but that's what i would choose...its simple and doesnt weigh much
I would get the swiss army bike because is the most reasonable one. because is like the regular, but with the exemption the this bike have a motor and will give security to your stuffs.
I would pick the Voltitude because its easy to carry around and it looks cool also. It seems like it would be fun to ride.
I chose the YikeBike because it isn't that heavy to carry around. I just think it's better than a solowheel.
Shadow Ebike-because it looks more like a bike.
i would choose the YikeBike because its looks kinda cool. And you can also fold it up when your finish using it, so you can take it anywhere.
the solowheel is a awsome thing but its hard to people that dont have good balanced so i wouldnt try it if i knew i didnt have good balance
I'd rather just walk or use a bike, but the Volitude seems like the most reasonable electric personal transportation unit. It could travel longer on average compared to most of the other ones, but an electric motor would be too high-maintenance for personal transportation in the first place.
I like the Shadow Ebike. I think it would be really cool to have an electric bike. It has no "various gears and brake cables winding their way around your bike frame" like on regular bikes. It kinda scared me at first when it said that there werent any brakes but as I read on I saw that the bike has magnetive regenerative brakes. One of the wheels has a USB port. Random? Yes. Cool? Of course. But who in their right mind would pay $1,999 for a bike?! Not Byron!
I chose d swiss army bike because is not a big bike i can come to school n just fold it up n put in my bakpak n dont worry bout getting it stolen.
Okay i love the Voltitude it looks like a minni ambulances!!!! It looks like it is good on gas SAY WHAT!! Just what i like to hear.
i would pick soloweel because it is small and easy to carry around and it looks awesome! :D
i would choose the yikebike cuz u can put in ur backpack. but i would get it mostly cuz its different from wat u would c around the citys
the yellow bike is super ugly and wayyy to over priced. i could could build my own and paint is a better color and make wifi stuff and put an altenator connected to the wheel that charges a battery that can charge my phone. this is a simple idea that is over priced!
i choose the shadow ebike, i hate the whole concept of this bike if i had a eletric bike i wouldnt want to have to petal and i dont like the design it just looks like a reg. bike.
i like the little swiss bike. i like it because it can go at least 12 miles off a single charge. i like it because its not too small or too big.
I decided to choose Shadow Ebike.
Although I'm not to crazy about the bright yellow stop traffic yellow, I do feel the idea of a mottorized, wireless bicycle is an terrific idea and I would definitely go and a buy one of those bikes. A motorized wireless bike would be efficent for people who enjoy riding bikes in their everyday life. A check plus for the Shadow Ebike
Obviously i would choose the Shadow Ebike because it looks like a normal bike but it isn't. The only downside is the price, but other than that the power assistance would be alright
i wouldn't choose the solowheel, because i don't have good balance. the one i would choose is the yikebike because it look like the one i would have, to have the least balance.
The Shadow Ebike is the ugliest bike i have ever seen. they put too much unneeded stuff on the bike, and it looks like an ordinary bike with yellow wheels. It is also overpriced
I guess id choose the shadoe Ebike because its stilol looks like a bike but has alot of neat new things, for example its wireless...which is pretty cool to have on a bike, no longer hav to see wchich breake to push or anything
I would never use the Solowheel. It looks dangerous and uncomfortable. I would want something more like the Shadow Ebike, because it has a seat and it has a USB port and charging port.
i pick The Voltitude: Like a Swiss Army Knife becuase it looks the best out of them all and that youu just have to ride becuase it has a motor...
I would probably go with the Ebike, mainly because it's the only one I wouldn't look awkward on.
The solowheel for sure. Nothing is quite as hoss-like as rolling around on a unicycle and it's easy to lug around. Keeping the pattern, I have to mention how I'd use this for criminal activities. Every seen someone do a drive by on a unicycle? Get readyt.
Dontcha hate that? Ready*
definetely the solowheel. i can just put it in my backpack and just leave school without even worrying about bicicles.
i like the yellow bike thingy because its like a bike but the wires are hidden in teh frame so that you dont get your leg caught in the wire and crass or pull out the wiring
i pick the yike biki, because it's cooler and more nomal looking than all the other ones :)
i personally like regular old bikes or my skateboard. But since i have to choose ima go with the solo wheel cuz i think it would be awesome to ride on a lil notoized wheel... If I had one id run my dads cat over just sayin ;P
i'm not a big fan of personal transportation aside from a bike, but the solowheel would be pretty cool to have on a lazy afternoon.
I would choose the solo wheel just so i could say i had one...soon to be followed by weeks in the hospital after having the driver of an 18-wheeler explain why some psycho on some retarded wheel thing ended up smeared on the grill of his truck...but hey it'd be stylish
The ebike looks pretty legit, since it seems like it'd be a bike but safer, and Americans still actually have to exercise to use it instead of being lazy and fat and just sitting down.
I really would like the Yikebike, but I wouldn't want to pay all that extra money just to add 10 more mph too it.
i chose the voltitude scooter thing because its portible, small and electric so i wouldn't have to pedal and be lazy.
the voltitude. I like this personally mostly because of how small it is. plus you can scare the crap out of people with it.
The only one I really like is The Voltitude. I like it for the following reasons:
1.Its name (Very creative)
2.Its design is like a combination of a scooter and a Swiss army knife.
3.I like the blurb used to advertise for it. 8-)
Shadow Ebike is really cool it can charge your stuff as you go and has up to a 15 mile range. thow it still has a load of room for improvement, like not worring about rether someone can see the battery pack and give it a longer rang.
I would chose the Shadow Ebike because it looks like the simplier type of transportation and i'm to clumsy for the YikeBike or the Solo Wheel.
i like the yellow electric bike. it would be could to ride around on a bike and still not have to do all the work. id like it more in a different color though. maybe purple
I would probably pick the shadow ebike. it seems the most high tech. usb port i think so
I Like The E-Bike...iLove the Color...it still looks normal.I like hows its electric but other than that everything else looks Crazyy
