Blog 30 4/25/11

Hi Folks!

When I started looking into new phone technology, I found some up and coming stuff that will make our phones more useful. Stuff such as this:

http://www.telegram.com/article/20110222/NEWS/102220337

I dig the Tap-To-Pay idea. Already at some airports you can board by downloading your boarding pass to your cell phone and showing it at the gate. I think we'll be moving more and more in that direction. As our cell phones become more a part of our daily lives their functionality will also increase.

So this week I want to show a video from my favorite technology guy, David Pogue. He's the tech writer for the New York Times, and he's pretty dang funny as well.

So put your headphones on and watch the video and tell me which one of his ideas you would use on your phone. Alternatively, you can google new cell phone technology and post a link and tell me how that technology would change the way you use your cell phone.

THIS IS THE ONLY VIDEO I'M ALLOWING YOU TO PUSH PLAY ON BECAUSE I'VE ALREADY EMBEDDED IT! Please don't ruin this for the rest of us by playing other videos / soaking up the bandwidth!

Talk to me . . .

I think the Skype is cool unless you have Wifi everywhere you go. The Chacha sounds interesting but i would never work somewhere where they pay me about 30 cents per text!

fuentes, m - 1 said...

i really liked the skype on your phone. i like it becaue we use it and i think that not having to pay a whole lot for calling a friend or family member in a different country is really cool because you can talk all you want and dont have to worry about how much it will cost. another thimg i like was the not having to pay a cent when you are on wifi thing, that could really come in handy.

weaver, c - 1 said...

yea i like the whole idea. because now its gone be like a whole computer in your hand..i like the free call thing too

stegall, j - 1 said...

I really don't know if the skype would come in handy to me rite now..because my phone is prepaid and I don't know if I would be able to use it...but it would be nice to have skype

I like the idea of making a voicemail into a text message or into an e-mail. That saves a lot of time but the downside of it is that it might not completely transcribe your message exactly what you said on the voicemail.

patton, e - 1 said...

It would be cool to have skype on my phone but mostly because its free worldwide. And the thing that will make your phone ring is really hillarious because there is actually a voice.

wallace, o-1 said...

Well i actually have skype on my phone and i think its AMAZING. It gives me the power to make free voice and video calling and it comes in handy alot.

I want to try the "google cellular" although I never called 411. I think it's really interesting because I can easily know the coffeshop or library nearby by just sending message.

I really thought that the skype idea on a cell phone would be really cool and would save me some money when i go to college and stuff like that or when im out of the country

Reyes, A-4 said...

The most interesting was the ChaCha program. Being able to know anything at anytime seems pretty useful. I was also interested in the Skype for Phones idea. The perfect solution for cheapskates.

tedder, d - 4 said...

i like the skype on the phone idea, it would be cool if you could call worldwide for free. My phone is Jailbroken so most of my stuff is free.

Toth, d - 4 said...

i like it all but the skype is my favorite, free is blissfull especially in the face of useing it as a call to contact others. =D

wilson, k - 4 said...

I like the Cha Cha so that I can ask any question and get an answer. This video was really funny. It was great.

rivera, m - 4 said...

I liked the idea of making a voicemail into a massage which is neat cuz you can even have a solution when your too lazy to txt. Bad thing about this is that it wont probably get the entire message that you said.

wilson, k - 4 said...

I liked the Cha Cha. It would be great to ask any question and get an answer back in a text. This guy was really funny. I liked this video.

diverdi, d - 4 said...

i like the skype thing i just recently downloaded it to my phone and havent had time to sign in to it yet but its going to be cool to get

madkins, b - 4 said...

Ok Skype on my cell would be really neat I think. I usually get on Skype to talk to my dad when he is in Iraq but I can only use it when I'm at the house. I know
I'm not the only person in the world that wants to be able to talk to family whn they are away from the house. I would love to use it anytime and ANYWHERE for FREE!

I like the Skype on phone Idea.. I think it would be pretty cool.. I also like the one where you can type a question and send it to google and get answers for free that could come pretty handy.

emborgo, t - 4 said...

Having skype on phones would be extremely helpful and cheap. Once everyone has skype on their phones, then everyone would use it and never have to pay to call anymore. I like that popularity dailer too. It would come in handy in awkward times.

gutierrez, n - 4 said...

i like the skype unless you have wifi everywhere you go plus its free. i also like the chacha because it could help me alot! not only in school work but also outside of school

vargas, k - 4 said...

I like the skype idea. I have a lot of family out of the country and sometimes we like to use it but having it on phones would make everything very convenient.

young, j - 4 said...

I think Chacha would be pretty neat. I mean, doesnt everyone have those moments when they need to remember those random facts that have nothing to do with anything? I know I do. But of course it could also be used to remember (or learn) important facts. Very handy.

carrillo, c - 4 said...

I think the skype would really help the college students like he said. Because this being free, would save a lot of money in calls world wide! I also liked the thing were you can text any question, and get an answer back in 5 seconds.

pedroza, y - 4 said...

the voicemail into texts souds like a good deal to me because i never what to call voicemail it always takes forever..! i also like the Google info much easier than GPS on the phone...

adams, i - 5 said...

i found this very cool phone on http://sclick.net its called the leaf phone
it runs on solar energy.. and it can be pluged in the wall just like a regular cellphone.
its easily portable.. its flexible too so you can bend it . you can also wear it as a band on your wrist!
you can do everything on it just like you can do with a regular cellphone. this could be very heplful in situations like if your cellphone died and you had an emergency... you could use the solar phone for backup and call up help. this phone could change the lives of many pepole in times like that.

Myers, K-5 said...

I like the google idea of where you can call or text them to find the number of a place or where it is. I hate calling 411 because they really do charge you two dollars for a small piece of information! It's ridiculous!

mejia, c - 5 said...

I think Skype is cool it would really come in handy on your phone. And especially at home.

johnson, d - 5 said...

i like the skype, thats really smart but if people could get it on their phone then phone companies would lose ALOT of money!

curry, b - 5 said...

I think it would be really cool to get free phone calls using Skype. It whole T-Mobile wi-fi stuff would be really good because it would save so much money! Now we basically already have a whole computer in our hands when we use our phones. I also like the app thing that calls you when you tell it do and it pretends to have a phone conversation with you. That was perfect!

velazquez, n - 5 said...

well i like the skype because it can be a life saver and can be very useful it can help save money to even for the collage students i also liked the one where you send a texts asking a question and it answers it in 5 sec

i like the popularity dialer .com, because if you don't want to beon the date or just woth the person you are eith you can set up the time where the thingy can call you when you want to be called. i also like the voip callig and skype cause they are both free, but skype shows the person you talking to.

brasher, k - 7 said...

i like the idea of wifi free calling stuff, it would be cool if that came with the phones like bluetooth and the camra on em.

redfield, c - 7 said...

I really liked cha cha because it would be very convenient to have sometimes during homework or when you just want to know an answer to a question.

nickson, n - 7 said...

i think the google thing was pretty throwed. 411 makes a nice little grip off of some people, but now we can text google and get what we need.

ramirez, j - 7 said...

i like the popularitydailer.com becuase i would want some one calling my phone when im in a place i dont want to be just to get out of it...

delagarza, g - 7 said...

I like ChaCha because you can ask it anything and it'll give you an answer. I would totally use it.

arnold, t - 7 said...

I think the idea I liked the most was the voicemail program that sends you an email of your voicemail and it pretty much saves the hassle of going through the annoying "fifteen minute instructions from a third grade teacher". I would most likely use the email since the text message isnt very reliable. However I did like the google and cha cha idea. I have used cha cha before and sometimes it is helpful but at other times it is not. I have skype on my phone and I enjoy being able to use it to talk but I guess that is the advantage of having the iphone 4 right?

ponce, j - 7 said...

I liked the free fone thing with the wifi, skype? yea thats it, its preety cool how u wont be charged or anything and that nothing happenes when u get out of range, the bad part is if im takin on the fone and on m way back home id still get billed. i also like the chacha stuff, i use it everyday pretty much to either get a funny joke or maybe use it for wen i have history hmwk and need to know who did what.

murphey, l - 7 said...

I like the idea of having all your phones respond to one number so you never miss a call.

But I also liked the idea of a message being turned into an email because the voice on the voicemail irritates me. And with that I would never have to listen to that voice again.

Overall I would pick the message being turned into a email or text message. but i liked all of the ideas.

lanham2010-eramirez said...

i like some of the apps he showed us especially the one were you humm or sing a song and it will give the song your lookin for.i also like the one were you tell the operator to call you at a certain time so it can interrupt you on purpose. thats genius.

morgan, d - 7 said...

Out of all of those, cha cha is the one I would use first. People answering all of your trivial questions would be a great thing.

albro, d - 7 said...

i liked the chacha thing because its like having a all the answers to all your questions, just a txt away!

wiggins, m - 7 said...

I use skype on a daily basis and i like it. It would be very useful on a phone.

skype is totally awesome. free and unlimited calls to anywhere. too bad cell phones dont have skype, or do they?

vasquez, j - 8 said...

I like the idea he talked about the one were when you hit a hotspot you can talk to anywhere in the world for however long and not have to pay the phone company anything. This is convinient for me since i travel quite a bit with schools and such.

pearson, m-8 said...

i love that thing were you txt google for info! That is really awsome, i would so use that :)

hernandez, b - 8 said...

Okay. The google and chacha is absolutely legit! These things truly are legit! I would absolutely use both of these! (This dude was pretty lively, I appreciated his stage presence.)

A few things, first of all...I thought they already had skype on the phone? My cousin was able to talk on his iPhone to his wife on skype during Christmas because she was at home and he was with our family...anyway

My favorite thing beyond anything is the Wifi thing where you get a box in your house that's super cheap, and if you call while in the wifi area, and you leave, wherever you go, the call is free. That's PRETTY legit! Although the part where if you call someone not in a wifi spot, and you go home, just call the person back whenever you get home so it can be free! Now here's the thing, would they charge more for the box monthly? Would they increase the price of minutes oh phones?

PS, I would totally work for ChaCha, I need money lol. I do text them all the time though whenever I have a question :)

scoggins, l - 8 said...

I think the voice over internet technology is really cool, if only internet was less expensive over phones..

matthews, j - 8 said...

I would love using Skype on my phone since I'm already using it for my computer. It'd be nice since if I'm away from home and those friends on Skype I don't have numbers for can just call them through there! Plus it's free! I also heard of the Pandora and I would love to use that, so I could just listen to new music everyday. The voicemail thing where they could send it as a text or an email seems kind of silly, but still at the same time useful if you don't have time to listen to the voice mails.

shankle, m - 8 said...

i think the skype is cool because i now have it on my phone and you dont have to have a web cam to facetime.

cejnar c-1 said...

I love the skype, I have it on my phone and it works great.. I never had any problem with it and you can call free.. I use it very often when I need to call my friend in Czech!!

wallis, z - 8 said...

I really enjoy skype, i've been using it for a while and i have it on my phone as well..but i usually still call like a regular person off my phone. Either way the technological advances are incredible and i must say i love them.

bryan, j - 4 said...

i want a cell phone where you can surgically put a speaker in your ear and like a mic in the back of your tooth or something. i forgot what movie i saw that on

norsworthy, i -5 said...

I like the skype. I LOVE to skype on my laptop. It is so much fun. If it was on my phone i would never stop using skype!!!!

Thompson, C - 5 said...

skype is nice but it take up so much RAM on a desktop. Even if the phone had enugh Ram to sustain the program it would drain the battery quicker than Ice outside on a hot 95 degree day.

vineyard, w - 5 said...

I would definitely use the VOIP/Skype-ish program on my cell phone, especially as a college student; it's effective, it's reliable, and it's free.
