Blog 2 - 9/5/11

Howdy Folks! Lets get going!

For this first blog, I want to explore your opinions about technology in school. Tell me how you think we should be using technology in the classroom.

Take cell phones for instance. Everybody wants to gripe about having to have them out of sight, but nobody has any real effective ways to integrate them into the class. Do you have any ideas about how we can REALLY use them in the classroom?

How 'bout Facebook? I was SO EXCITED when I thought it was gonna be opened up for our use in the classroom, and so bummed when I learned it had been reblocked. Do you have any ideas about how we can REALLY use it in a classroom atmosphere?

What other tech items can you think of that could help us out?

As always, you must advance the discussion to get credit for this blog. A yes or no answer won't ever get you credit. You need to THINK about the questions I'm asking. You need to TALK to each other on the blog. You need to feel free to agree and disagree with each other. You need to READ MY WORDS and the WORDS OF YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS. Always give an informed opinion. You need to ALWAYS sign and leave your class number. Ready?

Talk to me . . .

I think that using face book in class was a bad idea. you cant always stop people from doing what you dont want them to. unless you make the websight and you make the rules, people will do what they want with what they know.

Cell phones.....
In reality, cell phones are changing the world.
With all the different types of phones we have today, how could they not be effective for classroom use?
So many apps, world of web at your fingertips, easy communication to fellow students and teachers, and plenty of tools for daily use.
Although, not every student has the ability to do all of those things on their cellular device, and not every student would be responsible enough to have that privilege.
Even if electing to have cellular devices for classroom use, i feel like students are not yet ready or responsible enough to handle that type of privilege.

Using facebook in the classroom for blogging purposes is a good idea but the principal/superintendent thinks that everybody will be taking their own advantage of the site. well how about they take the time and block the main login page and just set up the blog page for it and quit whining about what the students might do and think about what might get them more excited about the blogging theme. I agree with Michi, Facebook doesn't really lend itself to education at all. There aren't educational resources on the site and most teachers wouldn't use a class page. With phones, I don't like having it put away, no one does, but they're really not effective classroom tools

I don't think cell phones should be intergrated into everyday school life. Without every person having a particular phone or app for the ENTIRE school it would be unrealistic to even try because requiring a student to have that certain phone or app might not be feasable to every person in the school.

Cellphones should be allowed in classrooms incase of emergencies.
And teachers should hold on to them during class and return them to the sudents at the end of class. Cellphones could be helpfull on choosing class officers by letting the students txt their votes. That way it would be a much more faster and efficient way for the students.

Bonifilio Soto-4th

Technology is a world in it's own. As far as facebook goes I think that it was one of the worst ideas that the school was going to allow. Has anybody seen the movie Cyperbully?? well its basically about a girl having a "Cliqusters" (form of facebook) and it was all cool at first and then one day people started to harrass her and telling lies about her. It drew her into this oblivious state as to who she really was. She became depressed and was hospitilized for O.D. Facebook should not be used in a classroom environment because it shouldnt be used as a grade to be able to talk and get up on the latest info.
As far as cell phones I dont agree with you D'jarius Williams because the ability to use cell phones in class could cause cheating and yeahh maybey it would cause "better" students in the world of passing and ignoring teachers but in the long run it is a terrible idea because it dosent allow them to succed in college.

As far as cell phones go, I think their potential is limited. Yes, if EVERYONE had a smartphone (and the same model would be convenient too) there might be something. But the fact is, not everybody even has a cell phone of any kind. They would probably end up being a distraction anyway.
Facebook. I don't really like it, and don't use it. I agree with Michi and Tobin- people would be checking up on their friends instead of class.
I do think that tablets like the iPad could work. They're portable, and a classroom set could have only certain useful apps for class use.

Thing like laptops and kindles for textbooks should be incouraged and utalized.Facebook would be nice to have, but is not vital to learning. Phones, i dont think are completly nessicary but i belive the cell phone policy here should be relaxed. I think we sho;uld be able to use them at school just not in the class room i think this would redouce texting in class if we could text in the halls between classes or at lunch.

I think that having technology in schools is extremely helpful. For example having laptops would help students be more organized, because they will have less papers to keep up with. It also is a plus if you are eco-friendly having less paper. But using things such as Facebook, or twitter is a bad idea because we preseve it as like a social network and not school.

I believe that technology is very important to use in schools. I believe that more and more students are getting bored with school because there is not enough interesting things going on. For instance I found a school online that is using the iPad in their classrooms (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/education/05tablets.html?pagewanted=all). They use it for textbooks and to play educational games. They also use them to do assignments and turn them in. I believe that if more and more schools began to use technology to help the students learn visually they will have better success in school. In my opinion cell phones should not be used because a phone is used to talk to people and that is not what school is for. I do believe that things like the iPad could be useful only if it is for educational purposes

I think cell phones should be allowed in class to prepare us for college. Teachers are always saying how they are trying to prepare us for the future but really no other place out there in the real world stops you from using your phone. It can be used effectively in class also. Giving us more privileges will help us mature. Facebook in class also has its ups and downs like any other thing. It can help students stay connected in class it’s easier and can be effective. By restricting all these things it only makes students want to find ways around them.
Ivette-5th

I agree with Jeron. The school should allow us to at least try to use technology [ Facebook, cell phones, etc. ] for a period of time to see how the students and teachers respond to it. If students are given the privilege to use cell phones and Facebook for school purposes only, they will participate in class more, and actually become interested in school work. The school also says we can't have music players at school. Personally, music helps me focus, and in middle school I had a teacher who allowed us to bring our mp3 players and iPods to school to listen to while we worked. It cut down the noise in class and kept us focused while we did our class work. We were born in the era of technology, so we relate more to things that involve technology.

Well it all depends upon which cell phone is used. If you use a regular phone it might not be great due to the fact that you might only be able to call people. If you had something like an I-phone, or I-pad on the other hand, It could be used to teach classes various things on websites that need a computer to be used. We could have an off campus Facebook Group. But then again everyone would need a computer in which case, I don't have one...Maybe I can ask the Hobo down the street if hes got one, But it might turn otherwise.

Honestly guys, if we had the option, we would be so distracted by cell phones that we would never be able to focus to get anything done in class.

Facebook, on the other hand, would most likely be useful as long as it is not on a phone or on free time.

the reason behind my thinking this is because Facebook is a social network that alows us to get into contact with other students that we barely see.
also, more teachers could use blogs on Facebook, im not saying to add them as a friend, but atleast put it on their wall so that students can see it.

in all, i think cell phones= No
and Facebook= Yes

At my old school in McKinney we were allowed to use our cellphones during certain classes because our teachers would have a free system set up that allowed us to send in questions anonymously. My opinion on cell phones is that we should be able to have them out in class but only to be used for reasons pretaining to the class asignment.

Facebook in the classroom opens up just as many problems as it does advantages. I think that it should be alowed but it have a filter on it so as to filter out graphic or distracting photos.

In response to Kyn'Teryn Mack from 1st period's comment

"Using cell phones in class eliminates all the talking in class if people are texting and it will probably keep a lot of people from getting bored"

While students probably wouldn't talk as much to one another and interupt the lesson verbally, the constant checking of text messages would interfere with being able to hear all of the lesson and students would be paying more attention to an incoming text rather than the teacher. In addition to that, on the boredom aspect, yes, school tends to not be the most interesting at many a time, but we are here to get an education. Sometimes we just have to grow up and deal.

Beides this, I find it hard to see any real progression in learning that a cell phone could possibly bring. I don't know, if I'm wrong some one please tell me...

Cell phones are unecessary in the education world. Cell phones might be useful, but they don't prove to be beneficial. They are a distraction for the students because they'll focus more on their phone instead of the actual lesssons that teachers have provided for them.

As it comes to Facebook, it might not be useful becuase students will be distracted be the social lives of their friends instead of focusing on the essentials. Honestly, I would chat with someone rather than comment on something dealing with school, it is just the way of the high school student. Boredom and privelages are not a factor in the education world because in reality, jobs are the same way.

I think that we should try to find a way to use cellphones in classes and if not then I feel that after the lesson is done and if there is spare time, we should be able to use our phones. We should be able to use them during lunch since that is our free time and other points of the day where it would not interupt learning. If it is not disrupting class or interrupting a lesson or the teaching, then why not? Is that not the reason for most rules at school. No distractions from learning. Facebook in the classroom is a horrible idea. Not because students can't handle the freedom to use it but because it opens the door for teachers and administrators to pry into a student's personal life and information.

I think that cellphones are better than some teachers. for instance Mrs.Lanham is the best teacher ever. Such in such is the worst teacher ever and you dont learn anything in that person's class. You can get on your phone and learn the information better off of google or something.

I agree with Tobin that if you need your phone in class to answer questions then you are not listening in the first place.

i think that using facebook in class is a bad idea as well. i think it would be distracting and not work well. i believe that cell phones should be incorporated in class. i think if we began to use them it wouldnt be such a distraction in the class and it could help the environment instead of hurt.

I don't like the day of Facebook in class. But I think the whole NO cell phone thing is too much, and we need to learn to have a cell phone and learn, like college does.

Twitter would make more sense to have than facebook cause you can easily put your dicussion questions as your status, and the teacher won't have to worry about you doing other things on twitter, like they would with you being on facebook..

I think Facebook can be useful but distracting. I agree that Twitter would be a way better canidate. Cell phones they are to strict about. They could prevent kids from talking and they are sometimes needed for certain people such as teen moms who need to check on their babies. This school aggrevates me when the last bell rings, the school is out and the rules are out. They have no right to take a persons cell phone if we are in the building...

I think that cellphones could be permitted at a certain point, not during lessons or when a teacher is talking.
& to facebook, some people aren't mature enough to use it, but it would be ok if the district would let us use it and see how mature people are..

I really can't think of any ideas to use our cellphones since we have computers in front of us. Of course in other classes the cellphones would be useful to quick-search a answer. I think we always remember the things we do in our cellphones & that means we could even remember the answers. I don't know about facebook (;

If people could be mature with cell phones it would be okay as long as it doesn't interrupt class. I think that cell phones being allowed out would be tooken advantage of, same with Facebook. There's some kids who would be able to still do their work with cell phones and there are others who would get too easily distracted.

My opinion about Facebook blogging is that we should be allowed to use it mainly because it will let us let out our opinions to new people.Cellphones would really keep certain people from talking and getting bored which I think would be a good idea to be used in classes.

As far as cell phones go, I don't think that there's any reason for us to use them in class. I do think, however, that cell phones shouldn't be banned in school. School should be like the professional world: we should be able to check messages, etc. between classes and at lunch, but we should be expected to put them away during class simply out of courtesy. Teachers have the right to give lunch detentions for seeing phones out in class because it's disrespectful, but I think that charging $15.00 to get a phone back is overkill. Just treat us like adults; we're almost there, anyway, and we might as well learn the proper etiquette instead of finding ways to fight the system.
Facebook for me is a trickier issue. I think that it could be a great tool for the classroom for discussion and research purposes. But using Facebook in school is tricky because it can (and, inevitably, will) lead to an extreme waste of time. When students should be working, they'll be chatting, browsing photos, and updating their statuses. I DO think it's a good idea to set up class Facebook pages for after-school use. That way, students can discuss assignments in an open forum or ask the teacher questions. Teachers can also create projects that involve social-networking components. My 9th-grade English teacher did this. We were learning about Greek mythology, and she assigned us to create a Facebook page for a Greek hero of our choice, customizing the profile, statuses, photos, etc. to fit their personality and story. I'm sure that there are TONS of other ways to use Facebook in school projects. But it's probably a better tool OUTSIDE of school.
Note: I'm a big fan of class discussions online, like this blog. So teachers that don't feel comfortable creating a Facebook page for their class should create blogs or use turnitin.com like my English class did this summer. It was a great discussion tool that was more academic than Facebook because it was separate from all of our other info and notifications. But any type of Internet is great for extending the classroom outside of the school day, which is REALLY important for learning.

I think it should be a persons choice. If they want to use technology in school it should be allowed and if they don't they don't have to use it.

I like the idea of being able to use cell phones in school but haveing the coutesy to put it in class, but then, sadly, I think that people would abuse the privalege eventualy because as Miranda said we're only almost adults.

Thank yall SO MUCH for your reflection and thought this week! I think this was a FANTASTIC discussion. I think for next week we'll look at some sparkly new cell phone technology.

Technology is very important in school, but cell phones for instance might not be. Students would be too focused about texting and their social life. Facebook is a bad idea for school because of profanity and other inapropriate comments.

Anonymous said...

I personally think that cell phones and allowing Facebook is just a big waste of time as Gage stated earlier "if the students can't be trusted to stay on task then there's just no use in trying"

Using your phone as part of class is too much for the common high School students to resist to abuse. This same principle applies to facebook. Even if you say you won’t do it what about the person next to you or the next person can you promise for them? The fact is someone will always abuse the system it is only a matter of time.

On the topic of other tech that we can use; I have read that some people wanted laptops inside of class for various reasons. Personally I think it is a good idea, but it should be school provided, because if a student brings their own laptop it may have some unsavory content. Though there is a high chance of the laptops being abused or stolen I would suggest that they would be only used by the better students, ones that are more trust worthy and have a very "clean" record. If the student doesn't have a "clean" then they should be able to apply for probation and see they will qualify in a few months

This is my thoughts on this subject and nobody can convince me otherwise.

I really liked the laser keyboard on the phone. These days the keypads on phones are so small and hard to type with. If you have the laser keyboard its like having a keyboard built into your phone, but you don't have to carry the keyboard along with you. I like how you can also just slide your finger up or down on the screen of your phone and it comes down or goes back in.
