Blog 3 9/12/11

Oh I've seen you my friends! Scrolling on down the blog page and checking out these sparkly new cell phones. So let's go ahead and start with them. I think we'll stay on cell phone tech for a couple weeks.

People tend to keep cell phones for only two years, and Je-Hyun Kim’s Natural Year Phone concept takes that into consideration. The phone is designed to naturally biodegrade after the two years are up.

A pop-up phone! Ilshat Garipov's "Kambala" is a fascinating concept that features a center piece that can pop out to fit into your ear, making it an earphone. In theory, it will also have the ability to match your skin tone, rendering it almost invisible.

At first glance, this entrant into Fujitsu's cell phone design contest looks like an ordinary paperweight. Actually, it's a cleverly disguised phone. As the picture shows, the small black dot can be transformed into a keypad, media panel or web browser depending on what corner of the plastic handset you drag it to.

Emir Rifat's "Packet" phone won first place at the Istanbul Design Week 2007. The tiny phone starts off at 5 cm square, then folds out as needed for different functions.

Designed by Seunghan Song, this "window phone" concept will reflect current weather conditions on the screen. To input text, you just blow on the screen to switch modes, then write with your finger as a stylus.

Pick a phone, tell me why you dig it. OR pick a phone and tell my why you think it's stupid.

Talk to me . . .

I really like the window phone, it just looks like a prettier iPhone, but I think blowing on it to change modes would be inconvenient and icky if you were sick. The window phone or the packet is my favorite, but the packet phone would be really easy to lose since it's so small when it's folded.

And the biodegradable phone is just ugly. It looks like a pile of grass clippings on your ear, and what if it started biodegrading too early? Then you just wouldn't have a phone because yours literally fell apart.

The biodegradable phone is an idea because what do people do with old ones --everyone has some or we would not be recycling them for soldiers --although that is a good cause. The clear phone looks like a soap dish but I think I would prefer it over the one you blow on and the packet thing is just too wierd!

I don't like the biodegradable phone because what if you need to get important phone numbers off the phone.

I like the fujitsu phone because it looks awsome and it would be a good phone to impress your friends with.

I think the biodegradable phone is ugly and has no point. if you drop it does it fall appart? is it in any way water proof? will it dissolve?

the pop-up phone is really stupid. "its almost invisible"??? so then how are we going to be able to see it when we needed. For example: Its midnight and someone brakes in into your house, and your like panicking trying to find the "INVISIBLE PHONE" which you cant find it, and you end up getting kidnap or etc.... so yes i think that phone plain stupid.

lol i like the pop up phone it will be non detectable just wat nhs needs ;)
the paperweight seems like if we were in a windy storm it would fly away
the biodegrade phone seems like it would just fall apart but cheers to being green
idk about the packet phone so clear i wud be a good idea

The biogegradable phone does not interest me at all. I don't understand why someone would want a phone that's going to literally break down in two yearss. I would want to have a phone that I know is going to last and, if needed, have it as a back up phone.

I love the idea of the windows phone. I mean come on who wouldnt want a clear phone that u can just blow on to change modes into texting!!!!? But on the other hand it might not be such an bright idea, because what if your texting another person that u dont want another person to know about well u cant hide it, THEY CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT!!!! I agree with maria the pop-up phone will be nice for school just like what she said "it would be non detectable"

I think the grass phone isnt a dumb idea because some people can keep a phone longer then 2 years and who wants a GRASS phone anyways (-__-) It looks like..... :o

The phone that looks like a paperweight is cool because if you get caught texting in class the teacher wouldnt believe thats really your phone.

And the window phone is cool because you can blow it for different menu's and its CLEAR! Who doesnt want a clear phone? Imagine taking pictures on a CLEAR phone! ;)

I think the biodegradable phone is stupid because if it started falling apart in two years, and you still needed it, you wouldn't be able to use it! I think the Packet phone is cool because you can basically take it anywhere because it can fit in pretty much anything.
I also think the Window phone has a really cool appearance, but I don't think I would like the way it works.

Congrats to the innovative thinking going on with all the phones...
Imagine the technology put into creating phones that can practically disappear and become paper weights.
While excellent ideas, I feel like the idea would be a lost one if someone seriously made a phone out of lawn trimmings... Or a paperweight. Senseless.

I like the "Kambala".
The "Kambala" phones concept looks like a giant leap forward, with what were doing with cellphones, but it again will most likely not succed, with students being one of the largest buyers. The schools would have a very hard time, trying to stop them from using this cellphone since it is nearly invisible. Unless they saw you talking to yourself.

Personally the window phone I think would be the best phone out of all of them. It looks more convenient than the other phones. The way it was shown caught my eye when I first say it. The clearness of how its deatails are discribed is vey engaging to buy, especialy the see through detail. AS i looked it up it seemes to change with the weather; if its rainy the phones seems it has rain in it, or if its snowy there is real life like snow in teh phone.
The other pohnes either look llegal, too fragial or loseable. Yea i dont want a phone that is easier to loose.

I like the "pop-up" phone because it is different. the only thing I dislike about it is that it is so thin so there's a possibility that it could break easily. The "paperweight" phone is neat but someone could mistake it for a pebble, pick it up and start tossing it around. The "packet" and "natural" phone are just pointless because the packet is too small and the natural phone looks like an illegal substance which could cause problems for people if it were seen. The Windows phone is cool but the blowing on the phone is gross because we carry germs and they could easily be spread that way.

The packet phone looks very inconvenient because the keyboard is arranged alphabetically and is spread out weird which makes it hard to hold. It's annoying when designers try to change the norm just for the sake of being unique when in the process they sacrifice functionality. There's a reason that QWERTY keyboards were invented.

Seunghan Song's window phone, while an interesting concept, doesn't seem to really be practical.
Firstly, writing with your finger can be difficult. Fingers aren't nearly as small as a stylus, so even if the phone is designed to be able to pick up minute touches, which it would have to be if blowing could change the screen one is on, the words would most likely end up looking odd and annoy whoever is trying to write with needing multiple attempts to get the writing to look neat or at least be legible. Plus it's nearly impossible to write small with such a large tool so you couldn't get much in one screen.
Secondly, the blowing is impractical. If yo can change screens that easily it would be a pain in the butt if you just happened to outside and the wind was blowing, one second you'd be trying to scribble a message to Grandma, the next you're typing that text on facebook. Could get awkward.
Thirdly, it's impossible to have a completely clear phone with our current technology. Metal cannot be clear, folks. It's an intriguing idea, but impossible now.
Fourth, is it weather proof? Because that is the only way that the phone could change to reflect the weather and not die. I mean, how's it supposed to know it's raining without being rained on? And what kind of technology would allow it to change a certain way to the sun or snow or what have you? Also, you could fake it into changing or it'd just randomly change on its own with what stimuli you presented it with. Give it a bunch of florescent light, splash some water, etc. to cause its change.

Ashley, I looked at the other pictures for the window phone (http://www.yankodesign.com/2009/08/18/phone-that-shames-the-weather-bureau/) and you don't have to try to write small enough to make it readable, you write a letter at a time and it converts it to a normal text. I know someone who used to have a phone that worked like that and it was fine, not difficult at all to use. Everything else I agree with though, which is sad. I wish it could exist! (and be practical)

Tobin, thank you for correcting my misunderstanding. Was it slower for your friend to be able to send text messages? I would think it would be since you have to write it out and hope that your writing is clear enough for the phone to correctly translate the character. I think that as far as typing and whatnot goes, we'd probably be better off sticking to keyboards just because that's not really open to interpretation since all the letters will always look the same no matter when you use it. Another thing I noticed looking at the other pictures from your link is that the display is hard to see with the weather backgrounds. It seems like the background is actually overlaid onto the words, not behind them. Even if everything else works, they'd most definitely need to rectify that otherwise there would most likely be complaints.

I believe that these phones look pretty fancy. Technology is making its way up, but I don't believe its all about the appearance of the phone we should focus on. The appearance is something that is considered in buying a phone. I need to have a phone that looks really nice, but I'm also all about its functionality. Some these phones have new, interesting functions like the phone that turns into an earpiece or the "pop-out" phone that can be easily stored anywhere. Some of the phones such as the "paper wiehgt phone" and the biodegradable phone seem pointless to me. What if i don't want my biodegradable phone anymore? Am i supposed to just throw it away somewhere? I don't get the point of its availability. Also, the paper weight phone seems like a lame phone. Its made of pure glass so one drop can mess up your entire phone.

I personally think that the bio-degradable phone is a good concept, but it won’t catch on because of how it looks and it mostly likely break.
On the subject of the Fujitsu’s cell it looks like a paperweight with numbers on it and I personally would not buy it.
The pop up phone looks ok but again I would not buy it mostly I would lose it often and I would break it easily.
The Packet phone is just too much for me I don’t want to continuously keep folding and unfolding my phone for certain things, but it is still a good concept
Finally the Window phone it looks nice but the concept of blowing on it is kind of gross, but besides that it is a nice phone (still won’t buy it).
All in all they are good concepts, but I would not buy any of them.
