Thanks for logging in!

Let's get deep this week. We'll get back to CES next week.

I want to talk about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his thoughts on technology.

In 1964 Dr. King delivered a lecture the day after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in which he told his audience at the University of Oslo that "material advancement was meaningless without an accompanying moral structure." In other words, the growing abundance of technology is undermining the human spirit. My favorite quote from the article is: "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually," he said. "We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers."

Here's the link to his speech:
http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2008/12/dayintech_1211

This week I'm asking you to think, REALLY THINK about Dr. King's words. I want his words to work on you a little bit.
He is telling us that technology advancement needs to go hand in hand with spiritual advancement, or it's all for nothing. THINK. Do you agree or disagree with Dr. King? WHY? You will answer both of those questions to receive credit this week.

Do NOT post until Thursday. Doing so will earn you a zero.

Talk to me . . .

I kindof do agree with Mr. King when he says "the richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually," because i understand that he's saying we're paying more attention to material things and not other things that we should be concerned about like "the simple art of living together as brothers,".

I do agree with his words.I agree with this, because it is not helping us improve when we think we can rely on improved technology, when we can not improve our human nature.I mean, What's the whole point in having improved technology when the people do not improve themselves

I agree with what Mr. King said because, everyday it feels like there is something new developing in technology but when it comes it growing as a community and a nation we simply cant for dumb reasons. "We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers."

I don't agree. I took this as it was meaning the progress in technology has made us less spiritual. I believe that the our progress in technology does not effect our spiritualality.

I do agree with Dr. King. His point to us is saying that we depend too much on technology that when we need to do stuff in the real world, we don't know how. "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually," has to be my favorite quote because it's so true.

I agree with Mr. King when he says "the richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually," beause people these days pay more attention to technology than other people. Me for instance, whenever our family is in the livingroom with eachother enjoying each others company and having fun, im on my phone in the corner checking out the drama on twitter today... haha sad but true. :p

I some what agree with Dr. King. We don't know how to live with our brothers. I understand that because most people would rather pick up the phone or text someone other than sitting down face to face to talk. With more technology we think less which is why i also understand when he says, "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually." With that being said, I just wonder how would us people be as a whole today with out all the material things.

I agree with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because when we have technology we depend on it more than we should. We shouldnt waste our time on material things. We should go out and discover more. Make a change with your technology!

I agree with dr.king beacause hes trying to say that as technology advances, people change for the sake of technolody. for example most people now-a-days dont send lettes any more they put less feeling in to the message, because when its wrote you had to take time to write it out and tell your feelings, but with the internet you dont know if someone sent you an email that they didnt even write. we need to live together like brothers, and help out instead of stay home at a computer allday or be on your phone all the time.

I agree with Dr. King in the fact that as we advance further technology we do lose some of he moral standing as a society. However from the another side of the spectrum adavance in any form of knowledge attributes to the grow of man kind both morally and as a educated society. Science helped abundantly in achieving civil right due to the back of scientific support that we are all equal.

I do agree with Dr. King in some ways, because we do have technology now that gives us technological advances, which we end up depending on most of the time. But then again i dont really agree, because all of the technology can end up making us less spiritual the more we use it, because we are on it all the time, and it distracts us from what we actually need to do.

I agree with Dr. Luther King Jr because I also believe that as technology advances we depend more on it. It's very helpful, has saved a lot of lifes, and which has been used to make new discoveries, but one simple thing that technology hasn't been helpful in, is living in peace with each other.

I understand where Dr.King was going with his speech but I don't neccessarily think that because I love my cell phone and computer that I am lacking moral value or sprituality. I think it has more to do with the time period that he was in and I know his opinion wouldt be the same now.But there were several key points that he made in his speech that I did agree with though, I do believe that we have become more dependent on advances in technology and I can see why he would feel the need to say these things but I don't agree with the reasons that he is saying them. Im almost pretty sure that if Dr.King were here now he would be proud of how far we have come with technology and his opinion on this specific topic might not be as one sided.-Mikaela Period 2

I agree that Mr. King's statment is true, but I rather think its the further development of science then technology that is the cause. (But technology is created from the further advancment of science.)
and as a result human spiritality and fath is declining.

"We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers."..... This quote is true and we can accomplish all this stuff but we can't have love for one another. People always say treat people like you want to be treated, but they treat other people bad and expect for that person to treat them with respect. You cant dog someone out and expect for them to smile in your face.

I agree with him. Like today it seems like people are always so concerned about the next big thing and when it comes to people we dont really care. I know this is a bad example but I think of robots. People are like "Man I cant wait till we have robots to talk to and hang out with." which is kinda jank cause people cant even get along with each other. What makes them think that we are going to be able to get along with robots any better?! If we cant get along with each other we arent going to get along with robots and then robots will rebel cause we treat them the way that we treat people (which is not good) and before you know it we are all enslaved by robots!... What? It could happen...

I agree with Mr. King when he says that technology advancement needs to go hand in hand with spiritual advancement. And the reasoning behind my agreement with him is that anyone can make new or improved technology, but it all has to for the right reason. Take the claymation film Frankenweenie (the Tim Burton one)for example, a boy lost the thing he LOVED most and created a device that would bring it back to life. Then his peers tried to reproduce the device and bring back their pets that were meaningless to them. When they used the device the animals did in fact come back to life, but they brought back their pets for all the WRONG REASONS so their pets ended becoming chaotic monsters. So when one creates technology, it should be done for the right reasons or it will just lead to disaster.

I disagree with what Dr. King said. He said "the richer we have become materially, the pooer we become morally and spiritually." This is not true. Your spiritual well being is not defined by how rich you are or by the things you posses. It is defined by your belief and connection with God. The richest person in the world could also be one of the most religious people in the world. Your actions depict whether or not you grow in spirituality not the money you make or the things you own.

I think I agree to Dr. King when he said "...we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers." He makes it seem like if we can't conquer getting along; which is simple, how can we make this new technology which is harder. But it only makes sense in his time because of the racism. We've definitely grown since then.

I do agree with what Dr. King is enforcing in his speech. Technology has caused us to focus more on the materialistic side of things. The spiritual side of us is disappearing, and it is being replaced by science and technology. We should learn how to concentrate on human spirit while also accepting the growth of material advancement. How to balance the two without one dominating the other will be challenge for us in today's world.

Pokala, 8th

I think he has a point with all that he said, just like we see the cost more than the value of our belongings the technology is causing us to be more unaware of what we already have. Albert Einstein also once said "I fear the day that technology will
