Hey -

Go watch this video:

http://www.ted.com/talks/malcolm_gladwell#t-488741

Then take a look at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norden_bombsight

For credit this week, please answer ONE of the following questions. PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONE YOU'RE ANSWERING:

  1. Which modern weapons do you think were inspired by Norden’s inventions?
  2. What do you think drove Norden to push himself to inventing this weapon?
  3. What modern warfare technologies do you think were inspired by Nordens invention?
  4. Do you think that we would still be such a prosperous country without Nordens invention? Why or why not?
  5. Norden immigrated to America and invented this. Why do you think he did that instead of staying in Switzerland?
  6. If Norden was alive today, do you think he would be proud of how we have put his invention to use?
Huge thanks for Kyle H. for the pickup on the questions this week!!!

If Norden was alive today, he would not be proud of how they put his invention to use. He was a Christian so he wanted less people to die and that's why he invented the bombsight. But they used it for mass destruction and that would have killed him.

I really, really, REALLY hope that he tried to drop a bomb in a pickle barrel. That would be awesome!! When can I try it? (I really think that he did because...well, why not?)

I think that Norden's technology helped to inspire modern targeting systems, like missile lock-on and machine gun sights. It would've been a lot harder to hit targets if we didn't have them.

I don't think Norden dropped a bomb in a pickle barrel. It sounds like a lot of fun. I wish he was alive today to actually see him drop a bomb in a pickle barrel

#2 Norden made this invention for it to be easier to drop bombs at the right time and right target.

6. Norden most likely moved to America because of the greater likelihood of making his dream possible. In America he had access to more resources, better scientists, and a better chance of finding a client interested in his product. Switzerland wasn't exactly a world power in terms of military. (Nor will they ever be.)

2) He said that he wanted to do it to minimize deaths in war and what not. I think what pushed him to do it was that he really wanted to save innocent lives and make war better (even though war is not good to begin with).

Norden immigrated to America because he firmly believed that America would recognize his weapon invention and make use of it since America was the land of opportunity.

Question 6. If Norden were alive today, I personally don't think that he would like it. Considering he was a full on Christian man I honestly think that the very thought of him finding out, will honestly kill him. (Might be exaggerating a little bit.)

I think Norden invention helped inspire modern targeting systems like laser guided missiles for example

#2 - I think that Norden wanted to make wars cause less killings of civilians and be able to pin-point a certain area to bomb so people can just kill the people fighting, and not people who aren't involved.

I think that all "spyware" like the predator drone or satellite images were thought of because Norden showed that accuracy is valuable and without accuracy comes uncertainty.(Kadence 2nd)

No I don't think that he would be proud at all because we have done so much bad stuff using it he wanted less people to die not a whole lot. Even the guy in the video said that he wouldn't be proud if he was still alive.

If Norden was alive I think he would be very proud that his invention was put to use. The Norden missile was only the start of more and better inventions to come. The nation would not stand where it is today without him.

What do you think drove Norden to push himself to inventing this weapon? I think Norden invented this weapon to keep peace between all countries! Like for instance if one country is getting out of hand then they can go drop a bomb on that country and be done with it also to prevent a war.

#2...I think what drove him to inventing this bomb is saving the lives of innocent people. A lot of times when bombs are dropped, they're not dropped in the right place. This bomb was invented to make the process of dropping it easier & for it to land in the right place at the right time.

2. What do you think drove Norden to push himself to inventing this weapon? I believe the reason he invented the bomb is because instead of bombing random people for no reason he thought to bomb the people who needed to die.

After seeing the problems with the Norden Bombsight, which was it's accuracy, the military's top priority would be to find a solution to those problems and create the weapon they were looking for. I think the Norden Bombsight lead to laser guided missles, which are deadly accurate and precise weapons that have everything the Norden Bombsight lacked. Unfortunately for Norden,I don't think he would have been happy with his invention had he known how it was used in World War II.

#6, I think that Norden would not be proud of how we use his invention to this day. His cause for his invention was to minimize death, right? But yet look at what the U.S did; instead of improving his invention, they just said screw it and dropped a big ol' bomb. For example, Hiroshima.

Today if Norden was alive he more than likely wouldn't be pleased with how his invention is being used. Therefore he never wanted anyone to die which was the invention (problem), while it was used for detructive ideas and he would not have been involved with it.

6: no I don't think he would be proud especially knowing that we used it to launch 2 nuclear bombs on 2 different cities although I think he would be proud of the improvements we have made to it to make it more accurate and easy to use in the hopes that it would reduce civilian casualties

Norden really wanted to make this because he wanted us to save more lives to better the further of targeting with his Norden bombsight.

#6- no I believe he wouldn't really be impressed on how we have used his inventions because he was a very religious man or a very good Christian. I also think he wouldn't want anybody dead, which is the main obstacle, and if he was alive he wouldn't want to be part of what we are doing.

Because I think Norden was afraid the Nazi's and Japanese would invade and get ahold of it, and He favored America and wanted to help stop them. -Zach 7th

I think Norden immigrated to America and invented this instead of staying in Switzerland because a communist government would come looking for him and torture him to revealing is whole plan and endanger innocent people which is what he didn't want.

I am answering question 3. I think that the Javelin missile launcher was inspired by the Norden bombsight. The Javelin missile launcher is a sort of shoulder mounted missile launcher usually used against tanks and heavy machine gun placements. What it does is that the missile sight or scope pinpoints and locks onto a target and then when the missile is fired, the missile gets shot several thousand feet into the air and then drops back down on the target with precise accuracy. So in reality, it uses a sort of adaptation to the original Norden bombsight used in World War II.

If Norden were alive today, I do not think that he would be proud of the way that the U.S. is using his invention. He did not invent the bombsight for mass destruction, it was only for certain people who were individually targeted.

#2; I believe that Norden made this invention so it could be better with saving more lives/less deaths and having the ability to accomplish something that he really wanted to do. When he talks about dropping something out of a plane from 1000 feet like it would not land in the target, well he made this object to aim right straight to the target. That's whats interesting to me. :)

yes, because honestly the bombings would have gotten the same results even without his invention and America is the best

I'm gonna be fancy and answer 2 AND 6. Norden started work on the bombsight with the idea that its success would lower the suffering and casualties of war(2), however, if Norden was still alive, he would more than likely be devastated by the amount of agony caused by the inaccuracy of his invention.

2. What do you think drove Norden to push himself to inventing this weapon?

In the video, the man said that Norden was 'very Christian, and that he wanted to minimize the fighting.' I guess he thought that some dying would be better than all dying. Targeted death or whatever. (Even though the Buddhist in me is wondering why he thought, being Christian, that anyone dying was okay, but whatever.):]

personaly I think we would still be the same "prosperous" country even without it in actual warfare it was inaccurate, in fact we might have done better just carpet bombing than trying to be accurate. If it did give an advantage it was given to everyone because everyone had one because his buddies who built it with him were on the other side.

If Norden were alive today, I think he would be embarrassed and ashamed for what his technology was used for: the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He was a man of peace! He only built it so bombs could be dropped more precisely and reduce collateral damage. And then his technology is used to deliver the most powerful weapon of mass destruction that the world has seen.

well I think that Norden wouldn't be proud of how people are using his invention because he thought he invented something that would reduce suffering and all war and if he knew what they have used his invention for it would of broken his heart.

#6 I think he would be proud of us by the way we used his inventions because he didn't just made the inventions for him he made it for everyone so that it would be able to help us in the future and it would help us get more ideas of more inventions to make for the future also and it would suck if you went through all the trouble to make something and no one would use it in the future

4. Do you think that we would still be such a prosperous country without Norden's invention? Why or why not?

It's fairly obvious that the status of the United States as a global superpower would not have been effected in the slightest whether or not we had the Norden Bombsight.

Why? The answer lies in the World Wars. Prior to these conflicts, Europe had been the center of the world, through extensive imperialism and superior technology. You have perhaps heard the saying that "the sun never sets on the British Empire"? That stems from the pre-WWs era, when indeed, Britain--and many others-- had incredibly extensive empires. In this era, the U.S. had been largely isolationist, preferring not to get into world affairs (this was what led to the late entries into both WWI and WWII).

However, after WWII, Europe was in ruins from war and their empires were broken up through a sudden bout of independence movements in the global south, while the United States was relatively untouched. While Europe had to commit a massive amount of resources into rebuilding, and borrow a huge amount of money from the United States, the U.S. was almost completely untouched by the war. In fact, it was WWII that provided the necessary economic growth to pull us out of the Great Depression. This set the perfect stage for the U.S. to fill the position of the global superpower, and the Cold War only helped to ensure that this status became permanent (so far).
A dinky instrument that allowed us to kinda sorta put bombs in the right spot has absolutely nothing to do with the United States' prominence in the modern world.

TL;DR: No.
