Discussion 1 - 9/8/08

Hi Folks! Thanks for logging in. This will be the first of many technology discussions. Please remember that as always, discussions are either a 0 or a 100 in my class. Make sure you are advancing the discussion.

Please check out this link:

http://www.japaninc.com/cpj/features/features10.html

It's an article from Japan Computing about how teenagers in Toyko are using technology, when the technology adds to their lives (making things simpler), and when it takes away (wasting time).

In the event that the link won't work from school, I will have copies of the article posted around the classroom.

After reading the article take a moment to reflect on YOUR use of technology. What technology are you using that ADDS to your life? What technology is taking AWAY?

Talk to me . . .

POSTSCRIPT: DUE TO HURRICANE IKE THE DUE DATE FOR THIS BLOG HAS BEEN MOVED TO SUNDAY, SEPT. 21. THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS: DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE . . . YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN A HURRICANE MIGHT HEAD YOUR WAY!!!

Maya Hall's day is alot like my own save for the free period. But like her I ususaly have my earphones blasting in my ears and do homework and (if I can) Classwork On a School or Home Computer.

This article pretty much sums everything up. I am pretty dependent upon my iPod when I drive...it rarely takes my concentration away from driving, thankfully. I don't watch tv much, but when I do it feels almost like a waste of time, so I guess it takes away time. I tend to "hear about" most of the news from the internet so that's a positive thing...but I'm not saying that I sit on the computer and look up current events. When I'm on the computer I mostly check email and get on facebook. Again, a waste of time. I enjoy it, though.

Brice, R-4 said...

It seems to me that technology at her school is what drives their learning process. They seem to do almost all of there work on computers and that dosent seem to be a waste of time. As to listening to music that makes me focused and wakes me up to get ready for the day at school so to me it seems like technology is a good aid to the learning person

besides my cellular device and my music...technology isnt much of an importance to me. compared to maya hall im far behind in the technical world. were as my cell phone is my life, maya hall considers it a waste of money, but as far as the music situation we are on the same page.

Lanham said...

Wow Mr. Brice I think that was a very astute observation on your part. Technology does seem to drive their learning, as opposed to being just a side note as it is here sometimes. In my opinion, tech has been integrated into every part of their learning.

Lopez, M-1~☺ said...

Well most of our tecnology here, is not that up-to-date as like in Japan. Pretty much I only use the T.V, computer and my music player. Other than that I don't use many other items. As well as that we live in Texas, we don't have very much of the advance tecnology here.

some technology that i use to add to my life is cell phone to reach my family who are in different places. some that take away i think is the computer because when it is used entertainment purposes. you lose out cause you might not no how to use it to help with things like education

Owens,M-7 said...

I am exactly like Maya Hall because im usually listening to music also. But for me you cant take away technology because i wouldnt be anything,.

Calderon,A-1 said...

the technology that adds me is computer because it can help me to do my homework or get more onformation that i need, but at the same time it can take away my "free time" when i'm chatting with my friends or just looking around on the internet, or i listen to my music

Morgan,R-7 said...

well, that the technology at her school and it seem alot use of that and it fell alike save my time to have free periods to us the technology and but that good i am deaf so i can focus on my homework or classwork without the mp3 or music technology.... but i didnt watch the tv so much but i feel it really waste my time and i use although the myspace or emails almost everyday it really waste my time again... oh,well... but the cell phone seem important to me unless it is emengercy but i loves to texts almost everyday alike whole times it really waste my times because i didnt playing with my family or friends time!!! i really feel bad i need to know that they are not importance in my life!!!!!!!!!

Trikosko, M-1 said...

Most of my technology use is on my home computer, I dont have an Ipod or phone (yeah I know I'm a caveman). I type papers, surf the net, and instant messeging, which benefits me while the other stuff wastes my time, like videogames.

lee, s - 7 said...

I want learn to technology in my life. Because I am learn something in techology in class.

brittain,w-2 said...

Unlike Maya i rarely use my laptop for school work and stuff cuz most the time i rarely have homework cuz i finish it in school, but yea i do see her point, i couldn't go anywhere without my music (whether it be on my computer, my ipod, or my XBOX 360) and i do think that in the future technology will be very important because as we grow older the higher up people will start to use technology more and more than they use it for now

Cole,R-1 said...

Maya's life is fully integrated with Technology, Mine on the other hand isn't, but Technology is a major part of my life.
My Playstation Portable is used as my alarm, so i wake up to one of my favorite Bands, after getting dressed for school and getting a cup of coffee I turn on my Ipod Touch, listen to music, check my email, and check for program updates. I'm on the computer while i'm doing all of that and drinking my coffee, waiting for my siblings to get ready for school, so I guess in a way that is the time wasting aspect of the Technology, I use. If I'm not doing anything else, I'm on the computer, Surfing the Web. The Internet is where I get most of my Information on News and everything. I don't have a cell phone, but i would use one mainly for txting if i had one. I use my computer to type stuff for school, and keep into with distant relatives.

Baker,M-1 said...

Though I don't have much tech in my possession, I;m always on the computer, watching TV, or listening to the radio. Sometimes I do all three at the same time. I Also if I'm studying I can't concentrate with out music blasting in my room making the neighbors angry.

Rigsby,D-1 said...

In many ways it help my life lke for news and stuff like that it keep me update. But in other ways it take away most of my life. Because i spend way to much with technology that i forget the most simple thing to do. To talk to my friends i can just turn on my xbox and i can talk to most of them. R i could pick up a phone. Forget going to thier house to talk i can just video chat them right there and it like i was at the person house. So it make people really lazy like me.

Tri-Edge said...

I'm too dependent on technology. I need to be on my computer all the time or my PS3 playing my games to entertain me. Even while I play my PS3 I sometimes listen to my ipod. My grandma see it as a waste of time but I don't care. It adds a sense of fun to life but at the same time takes away a lot of my time. I think I'm only on the computer for just 30 minutes but in reality I've been on it for 2 hours. I've wasted a lot of time on the computer.

Thompson,O-1 said...

I use Technology to do both at the same time. whene i get home i usualy dont have homework so i get on my computer and waste time, while listining to music.

Gilbreath,J-1 said...

Sadly, I'm on of those people who tends to do more electronic work than hand-written. I'm the kind of person who prefers the speed, efficiency, and more legible words of a keyboard to a pen or pencil.

Yet, technology has also ruined my life in some ways. When the hurricane hit back in my 8th grade (I'm 11th grade this year, you do the math), I wound up being bored out of my mind. However, it also helped, since I got to go outside and cut up fallen trees, which was great exercise.

mcgown,a-1 said...

Honestly, I will admit that I spead the majority of my free time on the internet. Usually on myspace and facebook. I do watch TV but not as often as I used to. As far as keeping up with what is happening in the world I use to computer more than any other source.Yes, technolygy can be a distraction but everything is becoming technolically based. Rather people realize it or not technology is a huge factor in their lives. Not taking advantage of it is their choice.

murillo, j - 1 said...

How technology affects my life is when I do not listen to my cd player and it wastes time when I watch tv. And technology affects life when you do not have free time like talk to your friends play with your friends.

reed, k - 2 said...

The technology that is added to my life is my cell phone, computer t.v and my music players. Technology take away a bunch of time for me it makes boring days seem much faster. So the artical was pretty much like what I do in everyday life.

allensworth, z-2 said...

though i do believe that technology can benefit the learning process, when it comes to reasearch and what not, i also think that most people waste more of their time texting or myspaceing instead of getting done what needs to be done.......i am not at all saying that i don't enjoy texting and chating with friends, i am saying that i believe most people would be more productive with a lower tech life style

i am both for technology and agianst it. i'm for it on one hand because typed papers look more neat when turning in papers because i write very messy, and finding information is alot easier using a computer instead of having to look up stuff in a million different books. i love music and i am a musican so listening to music helps me advance my skills. but on the other hand, i hate technology because when teachers give out a million assignments that require internet or a computer and printer!!! i dont have the privlage to own one so this makes me stay in town to work on my mom's work computer, in the dark because we are not supposed to be there!!! then i live 35 minutes away and this is very inconvenient when i have to stat there until 10:00 at night and then not get home until 10:40 then have to take a shower and eat supper and do all of my other homework and practice my insturment and i have no down time before i have to go to sleep!!!!! i's annoying!! and i loose sleep!! so, mostly technology takes away from my life alot!! I DESPRATELY NEED A COMPUTER!!!!!!!!

For one thing I love my iPod and I think that it takes away but at the same times adds to my lifestyle.(a) It adds my lifestyle because it's just plain fun! I love music and I believe that music can bring people together. And I get more done when I'm listening to music.
(b) I think it takes away from people lifestyles because your not talking to people; like when your on the bus and you put your headphones on so you don't have to talk to anybody?? We all do it. And it's a bad habit. But it's a choice we make that doesn't kill anyone. So it can't be that bad. So really I can't think of any technology that takes away from our lifestyle.Only when we use technology for evil is when it takes away from our lifesytles. I feel like I got off subject and I don't even remember the question now.

i use technology every single day is a good thing in my life but it also takes my time...if u used technolgy alot then your going to get addicted and thats not good because what will happen when you don't have it...it takes ur mind of sports and exercise so we need to divide our time into both..

payne, j - 3 said...

I believe that most modern forms of technololgy are probably taking away the important stuff from my life. My Xbox 360 definetly isnt good for me, as which my TV. But I have grown on this and they have become a central aspect of my daily routine. My computer and my cell phone are good for recreational purposes and for real work. I beleive though if I spend a little less time on my Xbox 360 and more time on working towards my goals, I think I could get there faster. But Ill need some other tech. to get there.

I agree with brice. Their learning process is focused around technology, (unlike NHS) :(
Technology is a big part of my learning process too. I HAVE to have music or something going in the background to be able to focus on homework. Cell phone wakes me up, and lets me call classmates to figure out how to do the work (along with a few minutes of gossip). Along with what S. Och said, ipod while driving is a must. If it's not playing, I dont react as fast to what's around me. (I figured that out last night going to Walmart, but thats a different story). Technology is not used just for learning for me, it's a way to unwind after a LOOONNNGGG day at school. I sit back in my recliner and watch some movies, look stuff up on the internet, and txt my buddy *Marcus Allen* in Houston. I dont want to know what my life would be like without the technology that is wired into it. "PUN INTENDED" ;)

robles,l-3 said...

To tell you the true i dont realy use technology every minute in my live. I only use it when i need it. The technology that adds to my live is my cellphone. It is the only thing that is closes to my every day use.Technology is taking away most of humans live. alot of people are turning lazy because of technology.

Dietrich,R-3 said...

i think a some technologys like an ipod are mulitasking and if you can do that then its not really wasting time. it actually kinda helps, but from time to time it distracts. But most technologys insted of wasting time they just make things more fun. But I do agree that some waste more time than save (they are addicting)

allensworth, d4 said...

i agree with ross ^
while participating in other activites, technologies such as an ipod, are not wasting time.... they are just adding to the enviroment of which you are in.... but some aspects of technologies are a wast, such as myspace on the computer, games on your ipod or phone and pointless shows on tv

borerw-4 said...

I usually don't noice the technology I use during the course of the morning, but now that I think about it theres things that I do that are similer to maya's day.I only use the T.V. in the morning to get the news(adds) and cath up and then I listen to music on my way to school.

Auxier, Emily - 4 said...

I use different types of technology every day starting in the morning and ending right before I go to school. I dont veiw the radio as a waste of time becuase I am very interested in Music and the radio shows me whats new. It also tells you current events. The computer is also not a waste becuase it gives me info for projects.. I can also keep up with my friends from different places and keep up with their lifes. I feel that some games are a waste of time but i dont play many of thoes. My cell phone is most important.. it could be a waste of time but I have it to get ahold of people. Thats not a waste at all =D

Lanham said...

Olivia I agree with that comment about not talking to anybody anymore because we always have our headphones in. How on earth do people get to know each other nowadays?

edwards, a - 4 said...

That girl is using A LOT of technology in her everyday life. As for me, I don't really use that much techy stuff (like a cellphone) unless it's an emergency and/or something serious. Basically, the only technology I have is the television and I just watch the weather channel. However, I do believe technology is very important to us...

Meredith,B-6 said...

I think that technology is a big help and makes life fun like the calculator games when class is boring, Xbox 360's when we get home, and stuff alot of people do like that which is fun. However it does take our focus off of our school work and choices and all that but thats not always a bad thing if u ask me...

Abdul-786 said...

Computers adds a a lot to my life because i can't live without technology sometimes. Living without a computer, a tv and other technological devices is impossible these days. These videos games are just waste of time. They waste our precious homework time. You don't get any thing by playing them so why play?

wallace,c-6 said...

well... i would say that my cell phone adds to my life because it can come in handy in a time of need, but my girlfriend likes to talk A LOT on the phone at night, so i lose about 2 hours of sleep a night.

Maness, J-6 said...

she uses a lot of technology of her life, without it she would probably have nothing to do. same for me. as opposed to what old people may think, none of the technology i use takes away from me. every piece of technology i use helps me in some way. computers for homework, cell phones for communicating, and so on. i even consider watching tv helpful because it relaxes stress and taking a break is really helpful.

Sauceda, Maria=]- 6 said...

Well technology does make my life simple. Like calculators it would take me years to finish my math work. Also thanks to the cell phone its easier to call people in an emergency. I enjoy myspace and just surfing the internet but I have to admit sometimes it is a waste of time when i could be doing something else.

Bixler,T-6 said...

Technolgy helps me to day learn easyer and faster about certain subjects. It helps me do research projects, presentation etc., but it has taken away the ability to move around, look research by reading books or articles. It has stoped us from communication from our parents so they dont know what is going on in our lives. They dont know what trouble we are in.

Byrd,N-6 said...

Technology helps get alot of work down in fractions of time and keeps people entertain, however i feel that many people have become too dependent on it. If for some reason we lost our power or if someones car breaks down they have no idea what to do.

taylor, Q - 6 said...

i would have to admit that i waste a lot of time with technology. i never do homework or any of the things that need to be done without getting on the computer first. besides always being on the computer,& txtn every 2 min. or so, i always end up using it for educational reasons. since i have a math teacher who believes in giving homework everynight im always using technolgy by using the calculator.

Cuarenta,A-6 said...

lets see.... i LOVE listening to my music... however i dont have an ipod (yet) and am too lazy to carry around a discman with me but anyways: at my house music can always be heard blasting from my room. I even play music while i sleep. I think that technology is essential but to a certain point. Some younger generations are becoming to dependent on it. I think my generation is fine though. we have the advantage of being able to do our work without much struggle. But when you think about it... how many hours do some people waste starring at the computer?? chatting or on myspace...

cano,ruben-7 said...

Something that technology adds to my life is the internet because i can use it any where. With the internet I can watch the news and see the weather forecast of the day and since I play soccer I can check the lates news of the sport.
-Something that takes me away is when technology is so much fun and you get addicted and you might just become a isoleted person and not spent time with no body else-

I would prefer to go to school in Japan. I love technology and if we could have laptops at school, I would probably bring mine. Our days are pretty much the same. I get up and listen to the news and do my hair. Then I change it to music.
We should have a free period here!!

maya is alot like myself i am usally on the computer or ps3 all day and it takes up alot of my time, but i get more done on my computer than i would with a pencil. but i dont go outside as much as i need to so it has its positives and its negatives.

martines,j-1 said...

technology can be helpfull but it can also be a bad thing. i use technology to help me do my homework and to keep me informed on news. and it can be a bad thing because i like to play games and that distracts me from doing my homework some times.

Anonymous said...

I can still remember getting in trouble for playing games on my calculator in math class... and in history... and in English. I guess you can't really fool an English or history teacher into believing that you are doing their work (I couldn't tell you I was doing work without lying).

But most of my time used with technology is adding to my life. Even the videogames add to my life (call me a nerd). There's nothing more stress-relieving than shooting a bunch of people online and hearing them yell at you for being so good. My cell phone brings everything closer to me from any point at which I am at. How could that take away? Music is not my main life, but it brings me back to earth. Listening to 3 Doors Down in my truck will settle me down quicker than anything. Everyone has their idea of what exactly “wasting time” is. What exactly is it wasting time? Would you say it is not getting something done in a period of time? Or would you say it is using time up when you could be doing something MORE productive? That’s confusing so ask me if you want a better, in-depth explanation.

edlin said...

Well i don't really use technology as much as i use to . If i do use it is only when i need to ,like for school work.I think its just a waste of time when you can do other better things.

Gonzalez, C-1 said...

To be honest. I agree with Tucker. I mean how exactly is it a waste of time when the reason that we are constantly developing newer tech to make better use of our time. It is made to make life more efficient. In other words, faster. The tech that we use is not a waste of time and no we can't do anything more productive with it because we are making the best of it by using our computers, no matter how slow they maybe. The tech that we use will always be designed to be faster than humans and theirs no point in denying it. The purpose of computers and so forth is just that. It just happens to make our lives easier as a repercussion. Even though we aren't as supposedly as advanced as the tech that Japan uses we are making the best of it, its just alot of people don't really see it. Also, no we don't take it for granted because its been integrated into our lives and its a common sight. We constantly see it and theirs no need for spazzing out when a new cell phone comes out or a newer laptop.

Lanham said...

Mr. Tucker . . . I get EXACTLY what you mean. Your version of wasting time will be vastly different from my (old person) version.

Once I went to a business seminar where they presenter's main focus was to teach us how to be productive pretty much every waking minute of every day. I left that seminar all jazzed up and ready to follow his plan, which I did for about 3 weeks. At the end of three solid weeks of constant productivity you know what I was? That's right . . . exhausted.

The moral of the story is that some of us NEED that "wasted" time to keep our heads from exploding.

arnold,t/7th said...

most of my technology is my home computer cause i do alot on the home comupter and it help me with my homework alot so that is my technology and i like to send people messages on there.

Becuase you [meaning Mrs. L, and scattered friends] already know about my level of technologly dependency [not very much] I would much rather comment on the topic of Ms. Maya's use of technology in the classroom.
There has been a recent debate about the level at which it is acceptable to have technology 'invading in teachers space'. I for one think that yes, we do need to limit the extent in which technology rules us, but also that we need to allow some forms of technology into what we are being taught, becuase curriclium based on outdated methods is usless to us [the students] in the "real world".
p.s. O MY GOD! ITS MAGULY!!![however you spell your name]
p.p.s. ceaser is cursed!

chanelectronic said...

For whatever reason I cannot log in.. but here's my rant: Technology opens up and adds to my day completely - otherwise I would be bored and looking for a creative outlet (Photoshop). Drawing, and writing can only do so much. Like my ipod is literally my sanity because I cannot go a day without having some kinda music.. My ipod just has things that I tend to acutally listen to, so it keeps me a bit more calmer and makes me less prone to go off on random freshmen in the halway - despite the fact that we can't have any technology is school. (Which may I add is lame) However, technology -the internet, my cell phone, everything-does take away time from family bonding and such, but thankfully I have girl scouts to pull me away from my cpu for a weekend or some significant amount of time. Uusually however, by the end of the trip I am spazzing out on someone..

chanelectronic said...

But I mean.. liek everyone says, technology allows us to stay in conact with our friends - and family.
LIke i never ever get to talk to my older sister as much as I would like to because she lives so far away, but thanks to my cell i can atleast text her.. Or like even iwth last moment things I can text my mom and find out what i can and cannot do - and leave the irritation in my voice to avoid major conflicts later :D

I don't really use as much new technology as Maya Hall. I listen to the radio more than my music player. I read the newspaper as much as i check the news on the web, and surfing the net seems like a waste of time like watching tv does. But I do love to use my cell phone,we have that much in common.
