Blog 6 10/4/11

Hey Yall! Thanks for logging in!

Thanks for all the great suggestions last week. Lots of you suggested video game technology and I think that's a great idea. We'll be here for a couple weeks or so, then we'll move on to some of the other suggestions.

Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to be a video game tester? Sitting around all day, drinking Dr. Pepper and eating Cheetos and testing out the latest releases of all the coolest games on the market? (Maybe the Dr. Pepper and Cheetos is just MY fantasy)

Well, turns out you're not the first to think of it. In fact, a reporter (a chick!) for the Seattle Weekly News did just that a couple years back. I think what she found will actually surprise you.

So take a bit of time to read this article. It's long, but it's a good read. Wait to comment until Thursday. Answer these questions for credit: 1) What surprised you about this article? 2) Now that you've read this article, would you want this job? 3) Why or why not?

Talk to me . . .

I always believed testers were hired full time and in a specific field. You could become a hardware tester, a gameplay tester, etc. The industry is much more cruel than I pictured it. I'd like this job if I were lucky enough to gain full time employment but the money you are paid is not enough to make it through the times of low activity.

I was not really surprised about the artical because I always got a feeling that a job that tests out video games sounds to good to be true.
I wouldn't really want to have this job, because you are never sure if you will keep your job and its only 8.25.
All in all this article interested me a lot and I hope I won't become a video game tester.

It surprised me that it can be so random whether or not you work that day; I always assumed it was a more stable job, even if there was time with no work. I didn't want this job before I read the article, and I still don't. It sounds extremely stressfull with pay that wouldn't be enough considering all the time you don't work, and I don't really like video games anyway.

One of the things that surprised me about this job was the fact that some deaths are caused by addiction to the video games. I didn't know video games could cause something that serious. I would not want this job.
I don't like video games to start with. And I feel like it would hurt my eyes really bad...I can't sit at the the computer for more than an hour without my eyes hurting, much less video games. I wouldn't like to become addicted and die either...

I thought testing video games would be a little more interesting, but there is such much more than what I expected. The number of steps that they have to go through before they can even play the game is just unbearable. After I read this article, I don't want this job because they switch out the people and plus, you don't get paid enough. There's no stability in that profession.

I love games!! I always wanted to be a game designer and a game tester I got like good ideas for new games!!! I know I want this job but I want to know what I am going to start off doing before I can just sit around and play with games. Has anyone seen the movie "17 again"? Because in that movie there is a person who sits at his house and play games.
I think that is what a game designer does and thats what I want to do I am sure they get a lot of money!! Because of what they do.

The article suprised me, of how hard the job is. To order to work you have to get there super early just to write your name on a spot so you will work that day. Its sad if someone else takes your spot for that day. Now that i read this article, i wouldnt want it. I will rather work at ciciz pizza. I dont want it because the job or game tester job seems too eeehhh not for me, and too boring, just seating there all day. What suprises me about the article is that, its kinda sad... After eigh hours of playing or testing the games, you have a major headache, and when you get up you feel all dizzy.

Honestly i thought the contracting of the testes would be more easy, and orginised than it was tat was what suprised me abou tthis job. Well aother thing was how you have to take the same steps every day to even start palying a game. Before i thought this would be a greatt way to get easy money but the stress and and the time for the console to load is too much, i cant stand slow thing i can't. I couln't work like that, i couldn't, this job would be perfect to gain calories if i was skiny, but unfortunatly i am fat so this job would not be for me.

The things that surpised me most about the article is that the testers and gamers actually work twenty four hour shifts of testing and testing. They each sit for hours and hours on end looking at and for the most tedious little things.
I wouldnt not want a job like this, i am inexperienced in video games and i have no real patience to sit for hours while continuosly fidgeting with virtaul people, weapons, animals and other objects.

What surprised me about this article is how the article described the job as if he did not like it. Most people would enjoy that kind of job. I guess it just depends on how you view it, because one of the guys did not even have to be there. He just chose to. I would like to work there but not permanently since keeping a job like that would be impossible. And making a living with that kind of pay is not really good. It seems game testers have been condemned to repeat the same part in the game over and over again just to make sure most of the glitches out of the game is a good thing. All work is hard, they don't call it work for nothing. Otherwise, for PS3, Betas can be downloaded either on the free internet service (which is really bad...They need to update it for reals), or the Playstation Shop. Beta testers are the gamers themselves in some of the new multiplayer games that are coming out. Such as the Battlefield 3 Beta, which I happen to have. ^_^.

This was a pretty shocking article.
All this time being a vid tester was lame. Who woulda thunk. I know plenty of people who would kill to get a job like that. It was very suprising at what actually went on during the process of testing video games. Having to re-boot pause for glittches, call for assistence, etc. leaves about 1 percent of the job to actual game playing. Because of this, I would never get near this job and I think after reading this article, neither would anyone else.

What surprised me the most was the bluntness of the company's to replace ones job. If I were to be interviewed by an associate and accepted into the job, I wouldn't want to show up early in the morning to figure out my job was taken by some random guys that "showed" he wanted to be there by arriving earlier than me. Honestly, I wouldn't want this job. It takes too much toll on the body and mind. Sitting there doing to same thing for extended hours (8 or 24)is not my cup of tea. I'd rather find a real job and get real money. The jobs seems boring too, depending on the tasks that they have set for you. I was surprised by how easy it is to become a video game tester. I always assumed that it was a difficult process because if it weren't, there would be millions and millions of video game testers in the United States and around the world. But there aren't. Now I realize that the reason there aren't so many people sitting around playing video games for a living is that not everyone who signs on to test games actually gets a job. There are only a certain amount of spots; that's what makes it a competitive field. Only those dedicated enough can actually make it far.
I would not want this job. I'm not a big fan of video games, and I would be very bored if that was all I did all day, even if I did get paid. I wouldn't want to have to wake up so early and compete for slots in a job that I didn't even care that much about. And I wouldn't have to deal with the stress of half-baked games that kept breaking down, leading to days that were focused on technical issues instead of playing games.

Honestly, I've never really thought about doing this particular job, but now that I know more about it I most definitely am not interested in getting it because of just how easy it it to be out of work and because of the ridiculous hours that they have to pull whenever the employer says, no warning, no negotiation, just do it or no work at all that day.

What suprised me about this article was how boring the job is and how hard it is too keep a job as a videogame tester, and i would not want to be a videogamne tester because it seems boring to me and i dont like videogames.

im not surprised this is too good to be true! there had to be a catcxh to it. sitting in front of a screen seems soooooo boring and i would hate to do that. no matter what the circumstance!!
