Blog 22 2/20/12

Hola Peeps!

Sorry about last week's Yanko disaster. Suffice it to say we won't be using that site again. You'll notice Blog 21 won't show up in your grades.

Moving on . . .

Let's talk about sports / fitness technology. Some of you know I've lost quite a bit of weight in the last few years (around 85# in fact). I did that by moving more, and then I started running half-marathons. And then I started doing triathlons. And then olympic-distance TRIs. And you know what I figured out about me? I train harder when there's data to look at. Go ahead and say it . . . NERD! Yeah. I know.

So when I run I wear a heart rate monitor that tells me how hard my heart is working and if I'm in the fat burning zone. In fact, I got a new one of those for Christmas and I'm still waiting on it to come in (helllloooooooo Garmin 910 XT).

When I ride I have a bike computer that tells me my cadence (how many times my foot goes around in a minute).

When I swim I . . . well I just try not to drown.

My point is this: There is a LOT of technology out there that has to do with fitness and exercise. A LOT. Many millions of dollars are spent in the fitness industry every year that have to do with technology.

So for this week's blog I want YOU to go out on the internets and find some cool technology that's related to fitness / exercise.

To receive credit this week you will come back and post a link for us AND give an opinion about your product. As always when we do this sort of thing, you may NOT use a link that's already been posted.

Talk to me . . .

This game for kinect called Your Shape: Fitness Evolved is a game designed for you to lose wieght. The article saids that its like having a personal trainer in the room with you.

Nicholas -

I've wondered / debated about these fitness games for a while now. I think you've finally boiled down what I don't like about them with this one quote from your article:

"Boom! There's a personal trainer in my living room ready to walk me though a routine," says Thompson.

No, there's NOT a personal trainer in your living room. There's a video game. You are no more undergoing a personal training session than people who play Guitar Hero are actually learning the guitar.

I dunno. What do yall think? Are these fitness video games really leading us towards fitness? Opinions?

The miCoach is really cool because it is a pedometer, heart monitor, and calorie counter. It also talks to you to make sure you're staying in your targeted heart rate zone and level you prefer to go. It'd be easy to keep up with everything at once with this gadget.

I think it said that it is coming out soon they said it can unlock your car for you "WITH YOUR CELL PHONE!!!" The final score isn’t the only result that counts. Only miCoach SPEED_CELL™ can give you the definitive score on how you measured up. With up to 8 hours worth of speed, acceleration, distance and pace data, the SPEED_CELL™ answers the question of who’s fastest, once and for all. It fits invisibly in miCoach compatible boots or shoes (and comes supplied with a lace clip for everything else). the Fitbit Wireless Personal Trainer- The Fitbit is basically a pedometer with calorie function, but it is very well done and makes an excellent tool for anyone who is exercising to lose weight. Keep it on you at all times, even during the night, and it will tell you exactly how many calories you have burned. You can then go online to their website and put in exactly what you have eaten, and find out whether your are burning more calories that you are taking in and if so how many.

Prosthetic technology has grown so much over the past several decades; the site says they even make prosthetic arms that allow patients to shoot a bow and arrow! This is such an important area for innovation because amputees need plenty of physical therapy and exercise to gain back their health. It also allows more people to enjoy sports and fitness in spite of handicaps.

During the summer, we don't have our coaches to give us results and we are to just go either to camps(freakin expensive) or join clubs, which dont offer that great of workouts sometimes. This tech will be able to help us with results and being able to do it on our own. It would be very useful to have to go along with the clubs or camps or whatever it is that you do during the summer. it also says "Next generation research is putting sensors on the hands and monitoring the propulsive forces as well to help improve technique more directly." which would be super awesome and helpful for any swimmer.
